Courtney and Emily continue their Legendary Summer Series with “From Disneyland's Tom Sawyer to Disney Legend: The Adventures of Tom Nabbe” by Tom Nabbe. A Disney 55er, Tom Nabbe was a newspaper boy hired as a young teenager by Walt Disney himself to personify the youthful adventurer, Tom Sawyer, at Disneyland's Tom Sawyer's Island. However, his Disney career wasn't limited to the shores of Rivers of America. In his 48 year career, he also spent time operating attractions, supervising food and beverage locations, and managing warehouses. He helped open Walt Disney World, Epcot, and Disneyland Paris but is most known for the Nabbe Grabber to help guests retrieve lost items in the parks. His recognition on Main Street and as a Disney Legend is well deserved reminding us that anyone can become a living legend. Welcome to the Enchanted Ears Podcast, where we discuss anything and everything Disney. This week we’re honored and excited for you to hear the second part of our interview with Disney Legend, Tom Nabbe. But before we get to that, let’s talk about that all-important Disney News. Since getting rid of annual passes when COVID hit, Disneyland hasn’t reinstituted the system. Instead, they’re starting a new punch card system (much like a froyo place) where you’ll get a reward after so many visits. And over at Disney World, under the cover of darkness last Friday night, they removed the requirement to wear masks outside. However, you still must wear a mask entering the park, in lines, and on rides. In this second installment of our interview with Tom Nabbe, we discuss Nabbe’s move to Disney World and his role on the Monorail. There were a lot of early issues and interesting specs Imagineers had to consider. We also talk about EPCOT of today vs. what Walt had in mind, Green Mail and Mike Eisner, getting his own window on Main Street, becoming a Disney Legend, how much merchandise Disney sells through in a day, and much much more! Thank you so much for for listening. Please be sure to check out Tom Nabbe’s website and book From Disneyland's Tom Sawyer to Disney Legend: The Adventures of Tom Nabbe Have a magical week! Check us out on Facebook and Youtube or submit a question/topic for us to discuss on a future episode or support us on Patreon.
Welcome to the Enchanted Ears Podcast, where we discuss anything and everything Disney. This week we’re honored and excited for you to hear our interview with Disney Legend Tom Nabbe. But before we get to that, let’s talk about that all-important Disney News. The Galactic Star Cruiser is set to now open in 2022. The Disney College Program will return this summer! And instead of Mickey’s-Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, Disney World announced it’ll have Boo Bash, a scaled-down event with characters and cavalcades. Tom Nabbe proved to be such a fabulous source of information, we’re excited to bring to you part one of our two part interview this week! In this portion, we talk about Nabbe’s humble beginnings at the park going from selling papers, to convincing Walt to let him play Tom on Tom Sawyer’s Island. When he aged out of that awesome position, Nabbe moved to Skipper on the Jungle Cruise and we get some fabulous insight on what it’s like to do that crazy cool job. We finish up when Nabbe moved to WDW for the opening of the Monorail. Mr. Nabbe also provides really interesting insight into what it was like working for Walt Disney and how to advocate for yourself to get what you want. Thank you so much for for listening. Please be sure to check out Tom Nabbe’s book From Disneyland’s Tom Sawyer to Disney Legend: The Adventures of Tom Nabbe Have a magical week! Welcome to Episode 33.35 of the Retro Disney World Podcast: "Looking Back at Tomorrow" - We appreciate your support and hope you have been enjoying each and every episode. Be sure to check out some of our previous shows. This episode is unique in that we are recapping the entire Epcot35 weekend; from our event to the D23 events we attended. Join us as we take you back to the 35th anniversary of EPCOT Center, 2017. Main Topic Looking Back At Tomorrow So looking back, at Looking Back At Tomorrow, it almost seems like a blur. We had a major event planned that has taken months of planning, and it has come and gone. The time, energy and effort that went into making this entire night a success took many people and tons of phone calls. As you listen back to our previous episodes, you can see our various teasers and hints we would randomly drop. Well on Saturday, September 30th, it all came together. We had some last minute additions, some fancy character visits and a cake that now has more photos than the original from EPCOT Center 20 years ago. See our event opening film here. In the episode, we recap some of our impressions and how we thought the night went overall. We also discuss the super rare character greeting, our pretzel situation and also take you behind the scenes on the now infamous EPCOT Center Fountain gift. Looking Back At Tomorrow guests were lucky enough to not only meet Tom Nabbe, but as a day of surprise, Bob Gurr joined the party. We really enjoyed hosting everyone in the Living Seas Salon and hope you had a time to remember. As we close out this part of the show, we welcome you to upload your photos, videos and anything else from the event. Attendees will also be sent a survey soon, to help us plan our next big thing.... See our site for How's drink recipies! D23 Events In addition to our event, D23 hosted some pretty amazing fan events for EPCOT35. Brian, Todd & How were able to attend the daytime event in World Showcase. They discuss some highlights and answered questions during this recap episode. After the morning, we hosted our walking tour with some fans of the show. This was a very relaxed and fun trip down memory lane where we all seemed to learn something. How, Brian, Todd and JT all were there to guide you around Future World and show off some different things that are still hanging around or only exist and remnants. We all had the opportunity to attend the evening D23 event which featured three corporate lounges, food from all over EPCOT and an amazingly awesome surprise to end the night. We give you all the details on this amazingly special event which ended our EPCOT35 weekend. Support RetroWDW Since our event, we have had so many people asking how they can get their very own EPCOT Center Fountain model. This was a limited run, but we anticipated some people being interested in purchasing an extra after the event, or even somebody who could not attend wanting one. In this episode, we explain our latest initiative to support RetroWDW, which can include your very own fountain model. This support goes to our episodes, website and future events. We genuinely thank you for listening, supporting us and also attending our events over the years. This is a super fun side hobby that we all enjoy and wouldn't be able to accomplish anything without your continued listening and support. Thank you again to everybody who listens, visits the site and also attends our events. For information on supporting - CLICK HERE
We start off on the Seven Seas Lagoon & Bay Lake, taking you to each resort and discussing what has come and gone over the years. The offerings at time are very interesting and unique, while some are still the same to this day. Everybody brings out their old menus for this episode, refreshing your memories. The episode is really a must listen, mainly because it focuses on lots of great places and cuisine items you may have never heard of. We continue to the theme parks, which almost need their own episodes just to discuss the varying items. We hit on many random things and have a somewhat order, but like any discussion, we go off randomly reflecting on some memories. Hope you enjoy and let us know if you have any retro menus to share!"] Welcome to Episode 33 of the Retro Disney World Podcast: "Retro Food" - We appreciate your support and hope you have been enjoying each and every episode. Be sure to check out some of our previous shows. Todd kicks us off with the infamous Universe of Energy dog food pump for the lava. ProgressCity USA had some information on this, which we discuss. The Universe of Energy, which we found had always been planned for the actual spot it ended up. Well...We found and heard from some listeners that this isn't entirely true. Brian also discusses some initial problems with the big turntable for the ride vehicles. This story is so crazy and absolutely amazing it happened this way. We also go over the audio poll from last month, Graces vs. Braces - Well we have the results and here is the final tally. Faces - 1 vote Graces - 8 votes Braces - 14 votes Mike wrote in and asked about our Tom Nabbe episode, regarding the monorail power systems. We clear up what we think Tom meant and how this was slightly confusing. Reese also wrote in, asking about the voice of 'Buzzy' and how it seemed to be two different people in the attraction compared to the pre-show. We all chime in on this to give our opinion. Thank you for all the emails, tweets and comments you have sent our way. We try to respond to almost everything and do our best to pick unique questions for the show.
