Today on the podcast we sit down with Angela Mavridis founder of TRIBALÍ Foods! As a kid in her grandmother’s kitchen in Greece, Angela discovered the nurturing power of real foods. Angela saw her grandmother happily cooking, a naturally paleo diet, from scratch — using only real organic, local, and heirloom foods. Ironically, back in the states, Angela’s dad owned a fast-food hamburger drive-thru serving up burgers, fries, and shakes. With a busy schedule, the family ordered dinner from their restaurant more often than not. On her quest for healthier eating, Angela became a vegetarian at the age of 13.  As an adult, She was constantly bloated and tired -- and was suffering from a variety of unidentifiable health issues that were masked by modern medicine.  She decided to go back to school and become a holistic nutritionist -- and after years of fueling her body with endless combinations of protein powders, shakes, supplements, and bars, she decided to return to her original way of eating when growing up in Greece.  After 35-years as a vegetarian, she came to realize that clean animal meats paired with real, ancestral ingredients made her feel better physically and emotionally. Within days, her gut and digestive issues subsided and her body started to heal. Making it her mission to capture the magic of her grandmother’s kitchen in a way that fits into today’s busy lifestyles, Angela got cooking -- and her business was born. Today, TRIBALÍ Foods seeks and sources 100% organic high-quality animal meats — from grass fed and grass finished pastured beef to free-range chicken, humanely raised pork, and wild-caught seafood — to create a flavorful, versatile, and nutrient-dense centerpieces for wholesome, satisfying meals. Cold brew won’t save the world. Just ask Chris Campbell. The co-founder and CEO of Chameleon Cold-Brew, Campbell is well aware of cold brew’s vaunted status as one of the hottest trends in food and beverage. He’s also extremely proud of Chameleon’s commitment to quality, its devoted consumer base and its leadership position within the space, all of which were key elements to its recent acquisition by Nestlé. Yet, in a conversation included in this episode of Taste Radio, Campbell stressed that a healthy sense of humility has helped steer the ship and been critical to the company’s success. “There’s nothing being sold or developed here that is necessary for life,” Campbell said. “We’re all going to be fine without it. These are all things that are additive to our lives. [We keep] that in perspective: what we do is we sell coffee, deliver a little smile for the moment in the day. And that kind of humility has been incredibly helpful for us, and it’s pervasive in our company.” But, Chris, what about beer? Isn’t beer necessary for human existence? Meg Gill might be up for that debate. She’s the co-founder and president of Golden Road Brewing, who, like Campbell, sold her fast-growing beverage startup to a global conglomerate. Gill, a young and ambitious entrepreneur who in 2014 was recognized as part of Forbes' annual "30 Under 30" list, joined us for a conversation about the launch, development and eventual sale of her Los Angeles-based craft beer company to Anheuser-Busch InBev in 2015. Also included in this episode: the latest edition of Elevator Talk, which features Tribali Foods founder Angela Mavridis, who joined us for a chat about her upstart brand of organic and grass-fed meat patties. Show notes: 1:16: A Dirty, Zesty, Spirited Holiday -- The hosts riff on a sparkling partnership between Dirty Lemon Beverages and Vogue, how Zest Tea is taking on energy drinks with its new line of canned, “high-octane” teas, and Townshend’s Tea Company’s innovative take on distilled spirits. 6:24 Interview: Chris Campbell, Co-Founder/President/CEO, Chameleon Cold-Brew -- Just about a month after Nestle USA announced its acquisition of Chameleon Cold-Brew, we sat down with the co-founder and CEO of the insurgent coffee company, Chris Campbell. In an interview recorded at BevNET Live Winter 2017, Chris spoke with BevNET’s Ray Latif and John Craven about Chameleon’s launch in 2010 and how it established itself as a leader in the fast-growing cold-brew coffee segment. He also explained the role of innovation in the brand’s development, why Austin has been hotbed for entrepreneurship in food and beverage in recent years and offers up his thoughts on new cold brew brands entering the fray. 34:50: Interview: Meg Gill, Co-Founder, Golden Road Brewing -- Like Chris Campbell, Meg Gill is familiar with selling an upstart beverage company to a global conglomerate. She’s the co-founder of Golden Road Brewing, a Los Angeles-based craft beer company that launched in 2011 and was acquired by Anheuser-Busch InBev just four years later. In an interview with Brewbound editor Chris Furnari and BevNET CMO Mike Schneider, Gill spoke about the brand’s rapid growth and path to acquisition. She also explained how Golden Road, which has become Anheuser-Busch’s fastest growing craft brand, is competitive among other brands within A-B's portfolio, and plans to press on the gas in 2018. 1:00:50: Elevator Talk: Angela Mavridis, Founder/CEO, Tribali -- Tribali Foods, a maker of organic and grass-fed meat patties, was the winner of the Pitch Slam competition at NOSH Live Winter 2017. During the event, we caught up with the company’s founder Angela Mavidris, who spoke about the origins of Tribali and how it differentiates itself from competing brands, in this edition of Elevator Talk. Brands in this episode: Dirty Lemon, Zest Tea, Townshend’s Tea, Brew Dr. Kombucha, Chameleon Cold-Brew, GT’s Kombucha, Golden Road Brewing, Oskar Blues Brewing, Tribali Foods

We are talking with Angela Mavridis of Tribali foods. She is just such a bright, bubbly, inspiring person who has created a tremendous product. And when I first heard about this product, I was so excited. I could not wait to try it. My friend Diane Sanfilippo originally told me about it. She leads this movement, Tribali foods, their first food products that they’ve come out with are these frozen burger patties. I’m going to tell you all about them. Cassy Joy: Thank you for coming on! I gave a very brief introduction. You know yourself better {laughs} so would you mind telling us a little bit more about yourself. And then we’ll jump into maybe some of the story of what initially inspired you to create Tribali. Angela Mavridis: Yeah, sure. So, my journey into health and nutrition was one that I call from paleo to confusion and then back again. And that’s because; I was born in Greece and lived there until I was about 6. And then subsequently spent every single summer until I was well into my teens with grandma just eating wholesome real food off the land and the sea. We lived at this beach house right by the water. Right by a fishing village. And every summer; I would spend literally three summers out of the year. Every summer I just felt like the food I was eating just made my body thrive in such a nice way. It could have been also the great vitamin D from the sun exposure. Or the 6 hours of swimming in the ocean. But I have to believe it had to do with food, too. And ironically, back in the States here, dad owned and operated a hamburger fast food restaurant. So even though we cooked healthfully at home,

Angela is the founder of Tribali Foods, makers of organic frozen burger patties of assorted creative flavors. The story of her entrepreneurial journey will inspire you to persevere through adversity and stay focused and resilient in pursuit of your dreams. Several years ago, Angela found herself a divorced mother of three young children , compelled to immediately switch from stay a t home mom to breadwinner. She also was coming off a 35-year stint as a vegetarian and endurance athlete and exp eriencing what she described as a “hard drive crash.” In search of improved health and vitality, she cooked up a steak, took her first bite of meat in decades and loved it (condolences to those vegetarians who say the return to meat and are grossed out). This meal was the catalyst for Angela to transform her diet and dive deep into the primal/paleo scene, and also set the stage for her eventual entrepreneurial adventure. She started buying quality meats at Whole Foods, getting a meat grinder off A mazon, and experimenting at home with assorted exotic burger patties. After all, her family is in the restaurant business and she spent decades working at her father’s hamburger stands in Southern California. Soon, her friends were begging for more and the butchers at Whole Foods were wondering what she was doing with all of her purchases! This led to a meeting with national Whole Foods buyers, who loved her samples and concept , and told her that if she could go start a business and get a product to market, they would place a big order. How’s that for marching orders?! Angela immersed herself into this project, has enjoyed great initial success, and is eager to continue growing. However, we all know how difficult it is to maintain balance in modern life, and Angela has had some awakenings and recalibrations along the way that are valuable to reflect upon. She conveys that with the company’s destiny riding on her shoulders, she has to be in top physical and mental form, well rested and refreshed at all times. Witness her participation in pitch contests, where she endures a Shark Tank-like interrogation to attract potential investors. For this reason, she has established winning patterns and routines, such as making time for a daily walk, along with regular outings with her kids away from the frenzy of the office. She is committed to taking care of herself from the inside-out, and hearing about how she is making it work will inspire you to do the same. Angela’s journey will remind you that while the road to success isn’t easy, there is no doubt that it is always worth t a king a leap of faith to pursue your passions...and hey, while you’re hard at work, super busy chasing your dreams , why not order a couple of Tribali burgers to keep in your freezer, so you can ensure that you are keeping yourself nourished, energized, and healthy ! *TIMESTAMPS:* Angela Mavridis was a vegetarian until she started her successful business. [05:25] Where did the name Tribali come from? [09:39] She did not have any digestive issues when she switched after 35 of vegetarianism.
