Leveraging social media and your email list to make your content work smarter with Ben Jabbawy from Grocers List. ----- Welcome to episode 523 of The Food Blogger Pro Podcast! This week on the podcast, Bjork interviews Ben Jabbawy from Grocers List. Turning Followers into Revenue with Ben Jabbawy from Grocers List In this week's episode, we're continuing with our Grocers List mini-series with Ben Jabbawy, the founder of Grocers List! He'll dive deep into how creators can truly leverage social media — not just for likes, but for real, tangible growth. The key is to shift your mindset from surface-level content to strategic storytelling that drives your business forward. You'll also hear about why email lists are a creator's secret weapon. While algorithms change, your direct connection with your audience shouldn't. Building a list gives you control over your communication and creates consistent revenue opportunities. Plus, he'll unpack how to make your content work smarter by using automation, repurposing assets, and minimizing the busywork that slows creators down. You won't want to miss this episode! Three episode takeaways: Social media can be used to build a business: The episode emphasized how important it is for creators to use social media platforms to capture real value and drive their entrepreneurial goals, not just for surface-level engagement. Email lists are a creator's best friend: You'll hear about how crucial email lists are for maintaining a strong connection with your audience and building reliable revenue streams. It's all about owning your audience and having direct communication, rather than relying solely on ever-changing social media algorithms. Make your content work smarter, not harder. Creators, especially food creators, can benefit from tools and strategies that reduce friction in sharing content, automate workflows, and repurpose what they've already created. This frees up time and expands reach without sacrificing user experience — it's a win-win situation! Pennsylvania is making its election data available to the public in new ways, with more updates to come. The Department of State’s new data dashboard makes information about elections easier to access and understand. State Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding was in Perry County this week, as the Shapiro Administration continues to highlight how SNAP funding cuts will affect Pennsylvania farmers and families. Pennsylvania lawmakers are considering a bill meant to streamline the approval process for energy generation projects in the state, but it faces opposition from many sides. A 15-year-old boy faces 20 to 40 years in prison after a jury in York County found him guilty of third-degree murder in the shooting death of his 12-year-old friend. A Lancaster County teen and her mother are charged with concealing the death of a child and other offenses. Susquehanna Regional Police say the teen aborted her fetus last spring by obtaining abortion drugs online and burying the fetus in her backyard. The James Beard Awards - the culinary world’s equivalent of the Oscars - are announcing winners later this month. In Pennsylvania, five Philadelphia chefs and restaurants are being considered. If you’re having a bit of deja vu over a plastic bag ban, you’re not alone. When Oregon lawmakers passed the first ban in 2019, which prohibited using so-called single-use plastic bags, more than a dozen Oregon cities had already passed such bans. But the ban's environmental aim of reducing the use of plastic - and its impacts on the environment and human health - did not end up achieving that goal. Grocers replaced the thinner, single-use bags with a thicker, sturdier version that in theory could be reused but only rarely were. The new plastic bag ban lawmakers have now sent to the governor for signature would eliminate all plastic bags from grocers and restaurants in favor of paper bags. Celeste Meiffren-Swango is the state director of Environment Oregon. She joins us to share more about how this new bill is expected to actually reduce plastic waste and what she hopes people do between now and Jan. 2027, when the law goes into effect.

A CMO Confidential Interview with Dr. Joel Shapiro, Managerial Economics & Decision Sciences Professor at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern, formerly Varicent Chief Analytics Officer. Joel discusses the difference between Data Science and Data Leadership, how many "little, better decisions" aggregate into something meaningful, and why everyone should remember that "data doesn't make decisions." Key topics include: understanding asymmetric risk, how intangibles scuttled a profitable data driven opportunity; why you should never say "because the model says so;" and the need to set error expectations to build trust. Tune in to hear about his research on planning for adversity in the NFL.

President Donald Trump's promised tariffs have become a reality: This week, he announced a 10% tariff on all imported goods as well as “reciprocal tariffs” on specific countries. Economists and business owners across the globe are stunned at how high these taxes will be, and that reaction is also playing out in the St. Louis region. Shayn Prapaisilp, COO of Global Foods Group, told St. Louis on the Air that he expected high levies on products from some countries, but was “shocked” by other reciprocal tariffs. Prapaisilp shares his perspective on navigating Trump's tariffs, the lack of local options for specialty food items, and the challenge of keeping his customers happy as prices rise.

Missy Vraney and Kristin Westphal didn't go to Marquette University. Neither did any of their relatives. Yet their family tradition of attending Marquette Golden Eagles basketball games spans generations. They're still supporting the school regularly—just in beer money rather than tuition fees. It happens every time they buy a Marquette Golden Ale before heading to the Fiserv Forum stands. This marks the first season since Marquette entered a partnership with Milwaukee-based Third Space Brewing to sell Marquette Golden Ale—the school's officially licensed and co-branded craft beer—at Golden Eagles sporting events, as well as in Third Space outlets and area groceries. As part of the deal, 15% of the revenues go back to Marquette. "People are extremely excited about it," said Andy Gehl, the co-founder and president of Third Space Brewing. "People love drinking beer with their favorite school, their favorite sports team's logo on it. That's No. 1. Also, they want to support businesses that support their university, and vice versa." This has become the latest fund-raising trend for college athletics. Learfield, which manages sports sponsorships for over 160 universities and licensing agreements for nearly 800 colleges, says that 93 of its schools had licensing deals for alcoholic beverages for the first six months of the current fiscal year. That's a 57.6% rise from fiscal year 2023, when 59 schools had deals for their own signature alcoholic beverage. The number of Learfield schools with licensing deals specifically with craft beers has more than doubled in that time—from 16 in 2023 to 36 this year. Cory Moss, Learfield's president of brand management and marketing, acknowledges he would have been surprised by this kind of growth four or five years ago. Then, he started noticing more interest from the schools themselves and from various local craft breweries wanting to establish partnerships. "When schools got really behind it and the craft industry really started to take it seriously, that's when it really started to grow," Moss said. It represents a major change in the college sports landscape, considering how many schools weren't even selling alcoholic beverages at their athletic events not so long ago. Food insecurity and food apartheid are a common challenge in many low-income and minority neighborhoods across the United States. Big supermarket companies avoid those areas because stores are unprofitable and small stores find that they make the most money on junk foods, sodas and liquor. Join host Ronnie Lipschutz for a conversation with Lina Ghanem, director and co-founder of the Saba Grocers Initiative in Oakland.

Emily Schildt wants food shopping to be a more fun and mind-expanding experience, and with her company, Pop Up Grocer, she's getting customers closer to that destination. Emily is back in our studio to talk about some of her favorite products that she's selling at her amazing New York City store, and how she sorts through the thousands of new brands to land on her always-rotating shelves. Also on the show is the founder of one of Emily's favorite brands. PJ Monte is behind Monte's Fine Foods, a historically rich (and legitimately incredible) New York City pasta sauce company. PJ has an amazing story to tell, and we get into how he took his family's sauce recipe, made famous at their restaurant on Long Island, and hustled it onto the shelves of major retailers. And finally, we hear from Tuệ Nguyễn, a.k.a. TwayDaBae, about her terrific new book: Đi Ăn: The Salty, Sour, Sweet and Spicy Flavors of Vietnamese Cooking With TwayDaBae.Do you enjoy This Is TASTE?
