Most pet brands sell function. Denzel's Dog Treats built its challenger brand around something very different: Happiness!! In this conversation, I speak with founders James and Nathan about how they spotted an emotional gap in the pet category and used brand strategy, packaging, product format and occasion-based innovation to turn dog treats into something much bigger than a functional purchase. And the commercial results are what make this such an interesting story for founders scaling consumer brands. A Valentine's activation delivered around 15–17x the rate of sale of a normal promotion, with more than 60% of shoppers buying it having not previously bought from pet. Their advent calendar has become their bestselling SKU despite only being available for part of the year. We get into how seasonal innovation moved from “marketing stunt” to revenue channel, why they designed for grocery, hospitality and online from day one, and how becoming obsessive about the brand experience helped Denzel's create genuinely incremental growth.Use code BGH25 for 25% off Denzel's NEW Advent Calendars from https://www.denzels.co.uk/products/advent-calendarDetails below **Redeemable from https://www.denzels.co.uk/products/advent-calendar only25% off Advent CalendarApplies to one-time purchasesNo minimum purchase requirementOne use per customerCan't combine with other discountsEarly bird discount, active from 15 Sept to 22 Sept (23:59)What You'll LearnHow James and Nathan identified an emotional white space in a category dominated by functional positioning. Why Denzel's spent roughly 30–50% of its initial £25,000 startup loan on brand, design and packaging. How Valentine's treats generated around 15–17x normal promotional rate of sale and attracted shoppers who had never previously bought from pet.Why seasonal NPD has evolved into an acquisition funnel that can ultimately drive shoppers into the core Denzel's range. How to design products and formats around new channels and occasions rather than simply competing for space within your existing category.Key Topics DiscussedBuilding a pet brand around the “happiness exchange” between dogs and their ownersBorrowing inspiration from consumer brands such as BEAR rather than the existing pet categoryUsing Denzel himself as the central brand characterStarting the business with a £25,000 loanInvesting disproportionately in packaging and brand from day oneDesigning dog treats to work in grocery, cafés, pubs and onlineCreating selection boxes, Valentine's treats, Easter products, birthday products and advent calendarsBringing a Tesco Valentine's idea from conversation to delivery in only a few monthsDriving incremental category shoppers rather than simply stealing shareSelling more than 30,000 advent calendars through Denzel's own website during an early launchBecoming a bestseller on Amazon at ChristmasBuilding specific hospitality products including peanut butter brownie, banana bread and pistachio cheesecake treatsOutselling a chocolate Florentine in Caffè NeroThe operational pain behind seasonal forecasting and manufacturingTurning seasonal innovation into a repeatable retail growth modelBuilding the UK blueprint before selectively expanding into EuropeWhy packaging has to do more of the selling in crowded grocery categoriesTargeting what Denzel's calls “Gen Zennial pet parents”Useful links https://www.instagram.com/thedenzelstory/?hl=enhttps://www.denzels.co.uk/collections/shop-our-treats?srsltid=AfmBOorqeOYT4jb5u60GQa-AtYmjaba8MHZRynjaGkfn1vmkOy_DcN5ACommunity and review requestDid you get a nugget of value from this chat? This episode is a wild ride, folks! Ross starts off by apologizing for a mistake in the show sheet, but things quickly take a turn for the absurd as they dive into a discussion about the best and worst things to bring to a potluck. Along the way, they touch on everything from jellied meatloaf to the importance of food safety, and even manage to squeeze in some news about the latest developments in the world of politics and business. This episode is a great example of the our signature blend of humor and insight, as we tackle some serious topics with their usual irreverence. We discuss the recent merger between RE/MAX and Real, and the impact it will have on the real estate industry. We also delve into the world of politics, discussing the latest news about the Trump administration's tariffs and the potential consequences for the US economy. But don't worry, it's not all serious business - we also take time to chat with the mayor of Denver about some of the city's latest initiatives, including the new RTD app and the upcoming DNC bid. So if you're looking for a podcast that's a little bit silly, a little bit serious, and a whole lot of fun, then this episode is a must-listen. Tune in to hear our thoughts on everything from jellied meatloaf to the future of the US economy, and don't forget to join in on the conversation by sharing your own thoughts on the best and worst things to bring to a potluck.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Um, but then recruiting the right people along the way.Farm to Pet is proving that a simple, single-ingredient dog treat can challenge the highly processed pet snack aisle while building a fast-growing business.Jackson Jones, founder and CEO of Farm to Pet, started with a problem close to home: he wanted something healthier for his dog, Rooney. During the pandemic, he began experimenting in his basement with a KitchenAid mixer, a dehydrator and a simple idea.He told me, “I wanted to create something that was what I considered the healthiest treat for my dog and had an idea that we could take a chicken breast, we could take a turkey breast, and we could dehydrate that and just literally use it and nothing else.”That “nothing else” became the heart of the Farm to Pet brand. The company makes single ingredient treats in a crunchy chip format that dogs love. Jackson explained the common reaction perfectly: “That's one of the first things people ask is, are you sure it only has one ingredient? What else do you put in there?”What began as a homemade snack for Rooney has grown into a vertically integrated pet treat company with national reach. Jackson moved from the basement into one facility after another, ultimately landing in a larger production space that allows the company to meet demand. Along the way, Farm to Pet built sales through local retailers, Amazon and other channels.I was struck by Jackson's candor about the challenge. “It wasn't an overnight success by any means,” he said. “It's been steps and steps along this journey.”For me, the human interest in this story is the combination of love for a pet, entrepreneurial persistence and a clean-label product that is easy for customers to understand. Pet parents increasingly want transparency. Jackson built the company around exactly that.Farm to Pet is also raising capital through a regulated investment crowdfunding campaign on StartEngine. Jackson said the campaign grew out of the need to fund more capacity while keeping the company in family control and inviting aligned investors into the journey. You can review the campaign at startengine.com/offering/farm-to-pet.I love seeing a purpose-driven consumer brand use community capital to grow. Jackson is not just selling treats. He is helping pet owners rethink what belongs in a dog's diet, one simple chip at a time.tl;dr:Jackson turned homemade chicken chips into the fast-growing Farm to Pet brand.Single ingredient treats provide a simple, healthy alternative to processed pet snacks.Farm to Pet is scaling operations with a focus on transparency and vertical integration.Jackson's leadership blends mission-driven passion, humility, team building, and trust.Practical insights for founders show how purpose and community can fuel business growth. How to Develop Mission-Driven Leadership As a SuperpowerJackson's superpower is mission-driven leadership. As he described it, the work starts with “having a mission…that you are very passionate about” and the ability “to kind of see through the next few steps.” Just as important, he said, is “recruiting the right people along the way.” Jackson was quick to emphasize that leadership also means humility. “It starts out, I think, by knowing what you're not naturally great at,” he said. For him, leadership is not about pretending to know everything. It is about building a team, listening, observing, changing his mind and giving talented people “the space and the time and the authority” to run with important work.Jackson illustrated this superpower through his early work with Miranda, who helped shape the company's social media and marketing. He admitted he did not know Instagram and was trying to DM people without much confidence. Rather than struggle alone, he invited Miranda to join the company and lead that work. She became a key part of the team, helping bring the crowdfunding campaign and brand story to life. Jackson's role was not to control every detail. It was to recognize talent, create space for ownership and let her strengths complement his own.Know what you are not naturally great at before trying to lead every function yourself.Build around a mission you care about deeply enough to sustain you through hard days.Look a few steps ahead so your team can prepare for growth before it arrives.Recruit people whose strengths fill your gaps and trust them with real responsibility.Listen carefully, observe what people enjoy and notice where they naturally excel.Give team members the space, time and authority to make decisions and own outcomes.Stay willing to change your mind when new information or better ideas emerge.Let go of work others can do better so you can focus on scaling the mission.By following Jackson's example and advice, you can make mission-driven leadership a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileJackson Jones:Founder and CEO, Farm to PetAbout Farm to Pet: Farm to Pet is a premium pet treat company committed to producing healthy, single ingredient treats for dogs. In 1989, a groundbreaking film burst onto the scene, revolutionizing the cinematic landscape in unimaginable ways. With an incredible cast and cutting-edge special effects, this film captivated audiences with its deeply relatable yet hilariously flawed characters. Would you believe that it was led by none other than “Weird Al” Yankovic?Directed by Jay Levey and co-written with "Weird Al" himself, this '80s flick tells the story of George Newman, a quirky character whose career seems to crumble at every turn. But when his uncle gifts him a struggling local TV station, George unleashes a torrent of outlandish television shows filled with social satire and zany humor. With the help of his loyal friend, Bob, their whimsical creations attract the ire of a ruthless rival station's CEO, setting the stage for an epic showdown. So grab yourself a Twinkie Weiner Sandwich, a box of Yappy's Dog Treats, and spin the Wheel of Fish as Tim Williams and guest co-host Nicholas Pepin from "Pop Culture Roulette" discuss “UHF” from 1989 on this episode of the 80s Flick Flashback Podcast! There are no additional behind-the-scenes trivia we did not cover in this episode.Sources:Wikipedia, IMDB, Box Office Mojohttps://www.mentalfloss.com/posts/weird-al-yankovic-uhf-movie-factshttps://www.joblo.com/wtf-happened-to-uhf/Some sections were composed or edited by ChatGPTWe'd love to hear your thoughts on our podcast!
