Sometimes solving a child's sleep struggle requires a full reset. And sometimes, it's just one small missing piece. Allison shares four real client sleep stories that highlight how one simple change completely shifted a child's sleep. From newborn naps to bedtime protests to nighttime wakings, each family had a different challenge, but in every case, one specific adjustment made a surprisingly big difference. Allison walks through: How restructuring daytime naps helped a newborn start getting longer stretches of sleep at night Why giving a toddler permission to cry actually stopped bedtime protests The power of "special time" and how one small language shift helped reduce evening meltdowns How using simple language helped a preschooler stop waking her parents overnight Allison explains why sleep puzzles are unique and how understanding your child's temperament, rhythms, and emotional needs can often reveal the missing piece. If your child's sleep feels stuck right now, this episode may help you think about the problem in a completely different way. And if you want more help, Allison and her team are always available for free 15 minute consultations. Click here to find out how to schedule your call.

Send us Fan MailThere's a huge difference between the spouse who simply doesn't care…and the one who may get things wrong—but genuinely means well and is trying their best. And if we treat those two like they're the same…we create pain where there only needed to be patience, perspective, and grace. Not every missed expectation is intentional. Not every mistake means they don't care.Sometimes your partner is:learning in real timeundoing what they were never taughttrying to love you well with tools they never saw modeled and giving you their sincere effort, even if it's imperfect.Because there's a big difference between someone unwilling…and someone growing. And relationships get healthier when couples stop demanding perfection…and start giving each other room to learn.Support the show

Disabled students make up the biggest minority group in US and UK higher education, accounting for about a fifth of undergraduates in both countries. While efforts to improve access to higher education for disabled students have contributed to increased enrolment, people with disabilities are still less likely than their counterparts to enter college, to feel at home in higher education settings and to secure a degree. And research suggests that many do not to disclose their disabilities once enrolled within an institution, which limits the support available to them. So this week, we speak to a US researcher who has dedicated the last decade to studying the experiences of disabled students in higher education and the barriers to full access and inclusion for all. Katherine Aquino is a social scientist and educational researcher who currently serves as the executive director for research training and development in the School of Graduate Studies at Rutgers University. Her research examines the complexity of disability in the postsecondary setting and her most recent book, The New Accessibility in Higher Education: Disrupting the System for an Inclusive Future, co-authored with Adam Lalor was published by Oxford University Press last year. Katherine explains why existing efforts to improve access and inclusion have so often fallen short of their ambitions, why a shift in mindset is needed for systemic change to take hold and how individuals have the power to drive big change For more advice and insight on improving accessibility for all in university teaching, head to our spotlight guide: Make learning accessible to all in higher education.

Send us Fan MailWhat if Alzheimer's didn't close a life, but opened a new way to see it? That's the question at the heart of our conversation with author and advocate Marilyn Raichle, whose book “Don't Walk Away: A Care Partner's Journey” chronicles how a reluctant daughter discovered joy, humor, and dignity alongside her mother living with dementia. We move from fear to curiosity as Marilyn shares the moment a simple painting class changed everything—the hum of focus, the pull of community, and the art that silenced stigma with beauty.Together we explore how language shapes care. Saying “living with dementia” invites partnership; saying “suffering from” reduces people to symptoms. Marilyn breaks down the practical shifts that follow: stop asking “Do you remember?” start asking open questions; measure success by connection, not recall; design small rituals—walks, music, Scrabble—that build attention and trust. Her mother's creativity becomes a north star, showing that purpose and pleasure can bloom even as memory fades. The result is a human, hopeful roadmap families can use right away.We also zoom out to the systems level. Marilyn's exhibits for The Art of Alzheimer's drew thousands and sparked the most powerful response of all: “I had no idea.” That spark fuels her work with Maud's Awards, which fund innovative Alzheimer's care and publish free handbooks so anyone can adopt ideas that work. From drumming circles to intergenerational programs, these solutions prove that when we see value, we invest—and when we invest, people thrive. If you're a caregiver, a health professional, or simply someone who wants to show up better for others, this episode offers tools you can use today: smile first, ask before telling, create low-barrier choices, and protect dignity at every turn. Subscribe, share this with someone who needs hope, and leave a quick review to help more listeners find stories that change the way we care. The consequences of climate change are everywhere. From record-breaking wildfires to catastrophic floods, climate disasters are killing hundreds of thousands and displacing millions. In the past decade alone, climate-related disasters have forced an estimated 250 million people from their homes. So why aren't we moving faster? What's holding back the systemic shifts needed to avoid disaster? Professor Tim Lenton is one of the world's leading climate scientists tackling exactly that question, but with a positive twist. Tim is a Professor of Climate Change and Earth System Science at the University of Exeter and founding Director of the Global Systems Institute. He is renowned for his pioneering work on climate “tipping points”; critical thresholds in the Earth system that, once crossed, can trigger dramatic and irreversible change.More recently, his research has focused on positive tipping points: how rapid, self-propelling shifts in technology, economics and social behaviour could accelerate climate action. His work shows that change does not always move slowly. Under the right conditions, it can cascade.Tim's research and latest book tell a more hopeful story, one in which shifting and adjusting our lifestyles can create a positive ripple of change and steer us away from the current trajectory of climate disaster. Send us Fan MailEver feel like you're sprinting through life in the wrong shoes? We sat down with inner glow coach and author Angie Hawkins to unpack how compassion, boundaries, and vulnerable honesty can move you from chasing approval to living with grounded confidence. Angie's memoir, Running in Slippers, becomes a vivid metaphor for growth: sometimes playful, sometimes painful, always real. She opens up about the childhood patterns that fuel people pleasing and perfectionism, then shares how an emotional rock bottom led her to rebuild from the inside out.We dig into the difference between forgiveness and self-compassion, especially when “forgive and forget” feels like erasing harm. Angie explains why starting with kindness toward yourself can reduce reactivity, reveal the grief under anger, and allow you to see others' behavior without excusing it. From there, we get practical: what compassionate boundaries sound like, how to check your tone without watering down your line, and why your emotional safety is non-negotiable. You'll hear a powerful workplace story where shifting to empathy uncovered hidden fear and transformed a tense relationship—proof that clarity plus care can change outcomes. This conversation also reframes leadership. Compassion isn't a soft skill; it's a stabilizing force in teams, relationships, and communities. We explore how to practice empathy without self-abandonment, how observation builds emotional regulation, and why calm presence can elevate a room more than outrage ever will. Whether you're healing after a breakup, shedding perfectionism, or trying to lead with heart at work, you'll walk away with tools to protect your light and still see the human in front of you.If the conversation moved you, share it with a friend, subscribe for more, and leave a quick review—what's one boundary you'll set this week? Send us Fan MailWhat if a warm cup and a square of chocolate could turn fear into trust? We sit down with speaker and community builder Andrea Putting, the heart behind Chocolate and Coffee Break, to explore how small, shared rituals help people feel safe, heard, and human again. Born from the aftermath of the Sydney siege and the #IllRideWithYou wave of solidarity, Andrea's simple practice has grown from a single day into a year-round movement that workplaces, neighborhoods, and friends can use to bridge differences. We unpack why familiar rituals matter: holding a cup signals safety, scent and taste soften defenses, and a slow tempo gives room for honesty. Andrea makes a clear distinction between listening to reply and listening to understand, showing how presence, gentle questions, and even shared silence help people tell the stories they rarely voice. From conversations across faiths to a moving account of a transgender guest finding space to heal, she shows how attention, not argument, changes outcomes. You'll hear practical steps for creating safe space—put away the phone, start with common ground, use noninvasive “heartwarming” prompts—and how to scale the ritual from one-on-one to group gatherings and even fundraisers. We talk about belonging as prevention: noticing the person at the edge before harmful groups offer their counterfeit version of community. The result is a quiet, durable form of kindness that anyone can practice today. If you're ready to replace division with presence and curiosity, this conversation offers a map you can use on your next break. Is your home helping your health… or quietly working against it? We talk a lot about workouts and nutrition, but there's another layer of health that many Christian women are just beginning to pay attention to: home health and environmental wellness. What we breathe. What we cook with. What we clean with. What we drink from. These everyday choices inside our homes can quietly affect inflammation, hormones, energy levels, and overall wellness. But here's the tension. When you first start learning about things like non-toxic living, environmental toxins, clean home swaps, and detoxing your home, it's incredibly easy to spiral. Suddenly it feels like everything is toxic.Every product feels like a problem. And instead of improving your health, you feel overwhelmed. In this episode of Simple Fitness Habits, we're talking about a balanced, faith-grounded approach to detoxing your home health without obsessing, panicking, or trying to overhaul your entire life overnight. Because health isn't built through fear. It's built through simple rhythms and wise stewardship over time. You'll learn how to think about environmental health, non-toxic swaps, and healthy home habits in a way that supports your body without creating stress or perfectionism. This conversation is especially important for Christian women who want to care for their bodies and homes well while still keeping their focus on Christ instead of control. In This Episode • Why home health and environmental wellness matter for your overall health• The hidden ways your home environment can affect energy, hormones, and inflammation• Why many women spiral when they start learning about toxins and non-toxic living• A simple approach to detoxing your home without overwhelm• The mindset shift that helps you focus on progress instead of perfection• Small healthy home swaps that can make a meaningful difference over time• How to pursue better health while staying rooted in faith and stewardship Resources Mentioned Christian Fitness Hub (Free Resource Library)Short workouts, a 5-day workout challenge, and simple tools to help you build consistency with your fitness.
Send us Fan MailCompassion gets called a “soft skill,” but what if it's the hardest form of strength? We sit down with Tammy Ward, a former RCMP leader who spent 24 years across federal, provincial, and municipal policing—from major crimes to remote northern posts—to unpack how empathy saves relationships, reduces conflict, and sustains teams in the toughest moments. Tammy shares clear, lived examples of de‑escalation through listening and presence, including why speaking with rather than at people can prevent force and build trust that lasts beyond a single call. The conversation goes deep on leadership after trauma. Tammy recounts the aftermath of a line‑of‑duty tragedy that killed three officers and injured two, and how she was asked to steady the team through grief. Her approach defied the old “suck it up” script: small human gestures, honest language about pain and suicide, and a culture where asking for help signals courage, not weakness. We also dive into domestic violence response—the danger, the complexity, and the power of survivor‑centered communication. Gender dynamics, team agreements, and matching the right responder to the moment come into focus as practical, repeatable tools. We challenge the burnout myth that compassion drains you. Tammy argues that silence—not softness—breaks people, and that self‑compassion plus peer support protects performance over time. You'll hear how to spot early disengagement, why naming suicide matters for real change, and what it takes to build workplaces where rank isn't confused with leadership. If you care about human‑centered leadership, psychological safety, and trauma‑aware teams, this conversation offers direct, usable steps you can apply today. In this week's Grow Guides, we're focusing on the small tools that make a big difference in the grow room. Not the big-ticket items like lights or tents, but the everyday tools growers rely on to keep plants healthy and problems under control. We talk about the essentials like EC and PPM meters, pH pens, and hygrometers, explaining why accurate measurements can save you a lot of headaches. We also cover practical tools such as pruning snips, LST clips, and other plant training aids that help shape plants and maximise growth. We discuss the usefulness of a jeweller's loupe for checking trichomes, along with simple but important gear like watering tools, moisture checks, spray bottles, and sticky traps for early pest detection. Finally, we touch on one of the most underrated tools of all: keeping a grow journal, and how tracking what happens in your grow can help you improve with every cycle. A simple but essential episode that highlights the tools every grower should have within arm's reach if they want smoother, more successful grows.
If you want to improve your marriage, the answer isn't usually one big change. It's a series of small shifts in how you think, communicate, and show up for each other. In this episode, I'm sharing six simple upgrades that can make a meaningful difference in your marriage — whether things feel good but could be deeper, or you've started to notice some distance between you.We talk about:• The internal shift you need to make before your marriage can truly change• A small adjustment in how you show up that can alter the entire emotional dynamic between you• The quiet way couples start seeing each other differently over time — and how to reverse it• One communication shift that instantly changes the tone of difficult conversations• Why the way most couples spend time together isn't actually building connection• The overlooked ingredient that brings energy, playfulness, and attraction back into a relationshipThese shifts may sound simple, but they can dramatically change the emotional climate of a relationship. If you're ready for your marriage to feel more connected, intentional, and alive, this episode will give you a powerful place to start. If you're ready for your marriage to feel more connected, more intentional, and more aligned with the kind of relationship you actually want, the next step is a conversation. I work with women and couples who want to strengthen their marriage and create lasting change. Send a textThe world feels sharper than it used to. Conversations cut faster. Systems feel colder. And many good people feel tempted to harden—not because they don't care, but because they're tired. In this final bonus episode of The Kindness Matters Podcast, Mike shares why staying soft in a harsh world is not weakness—it's courage. Drawing from his new book, Still Changing A World: Small Acts of Kindness That Make a Big Difference, he explores how we can protect our humanity without burning out, disappearing, or becoming bitter. This episode is about boundaries instead of walls, rest instead of retreat, and why small, everyday acts of kindness matter more—not less—when big systems feel broken. In this episode, you'll hear:Why the urge to harden your heart is often about exhaustion, not lack of compassionThe difference between boundaries and emotional wallsHow staying “soft and strong” helps you remain human without self-erasureWhy small acts create real change, even when they don't go viralHow to keep showing up with kindness without carrying the weight of fixing everythingFeatured readings from the book:“When You're Tempted to Harden Your Heart”“Small Acts Matter More When Big Systems Feel Broken”Key takeaway:You are not responsible for fixing the whole world. In this conversation, she and Ginny talk about what happens when “old ways” collide with the modern world and why so many families are searching for the kind of home life that builds capable kids. This conversation is about a return to skills, chores, and shared work that create something most families are missing: steady connection. And then Ruthann says it plainly: there's a difference between food and nutrition and in a world full of convenience, it's skills that put nutrition on the table. You'll hear practical, doable starting points (no, you don't need a milk cow), but also the deeper why: children need the natural reward cycle of effort, mastery, and a job well done because artificial highs from screens can flatten the rest of life. If you've felt the urge to simplify, to shrink your supply chain, to rebuild family culture from the inside out this episode will feel like a deep exhale and a clear next step.
