Diane Sanfilippo Quits Diet Culture Part 2Last week in our interview with best-selling author of diet books and former-diet-entrepreneur-turned-anti-diet-activist Diane Sanfilippo: we got deep into how after 20 years of dieting and building a whole VERY SUCCESSFUL career steeped in diet culture, Diane found she couldn't make herself lose the same x pounds yet again. Last week we dug into what diet culture is and how that came to define Diane's existence. This week we go deep into the implications of that decision. We talk about changing our minds in public, being true to our integrity at the cost of the public's understanding or agreement; the dreaded liminal space and what happens when you've got ADHD and nothing to keep you structured, and committing to the truth over consistency.About Diane Sanfilippo: Diane is the owner and founder of Balanced Bites - a wholesome food company that creates frozen meals, organic spice blends and snacks - all shipped nationwide. She's a certified holistic Nutrition Consultant, and two-time New York Times bestselling diet book author turned anti-diet advocate. Diane co-hosts Full Plate, a weekly podcast about healing from diet culture, setting boundaries, exploring mental health, and finding body liberation. Diane Sanfilippo Quits Diet Culture: Part 1During the pandemic, Diane Sanfilippo got on the scale and saw a number that was more than when she started dieting twenty years before; and she realized she couldn't make herself diet again. This isn't entirely exceptional, it probably happened to a lot of us, except in Diane's case she was the author of six bestselling diet books, from Keto QuickStart to Practical Paleo to The 21-Day Sugar Detox. So it wasn't as if she was just done dieting; she was also done with her career, livelihood, an entire identity. What happens when the thing you believed in stops aligning? What if that thing is a decade's worth of best-selling books that don't represent your current value system? What if you've been the poster child of dieting and you've decided to not just stop dieting, but become a visible and active critic of diet culture itself? Or what about this: what if you're career kept your life together, kept you structured, and all that just goes away and you're left in the vacuum of what's next? In this first part of a two-part series, we get into a lot: What diet culture is, how it keeps us distracted and forever chasing acceptance within patriarchy instead of burning it down; what about using diets to actually not feel horrible or to improve our health and the spectrum of anti-diet to diet positive; whether sugar addiction is real!; how in 2021 Diane realized after getting on the scale and seeing she'd “undid” all her work and that she couldn't diet again or spend the rest of her life managing her food, and what came from realizing she was part of the problem. In next week's episode we get way down into what happened after Diane walked away and how she's managing a pretty extreme liminal space. About Diane Sanfilippo: Diane is the owner and founder of Balanced Bites - a wholesome food company that creates frozen meals, organic spice blends and snacks - all shipped nationwide. She's a certified holistic Nutrition Consultant, and two-time New York Times bestselling diet book author turned anti-diet advocate. Paprikapulver). The NTA trains and certifies nutritional therapy practitioners and consultants with a nutritional foundation that emphasizes the body’s innate intelligence and bioindividuality. Because they know that a one-size fits all approach to nutrition does not exist. The NTA curriculum focuses on the importance of properly prepared, nutrient-dense whole foods, paired with a well balanced lifestyle. Sound familiar? I love this program so much. Throughout their program, students learn a wide range of educational tools and techniques to identify and correct nutritional imbalances and deficiencies. And students graduate with the education and skills needed to launch a successful career in holistic nutrition. May enrollment for the NTA’s nutritional therapy practitioner program, or their fully online nutritional therapy consultant program, is currently open through April 26. You can head to www.NutritionalTherapy.com to get more info. The NTA’s annual conference, Roots, is also happening March 1st through the 3rd in Portland, Oregon. I’ve attended in the past, and can honestly say it was one of the most educational and inspirational nutrition conferences I have ever been to. No joke. You can go to the NutritionalTherapyConference.com to register. You do not have to be an NTP to go; all are welcome. Cassy Joy: Welcome back to another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast. Diane Sanfilippo and I, and Juli Bauer Roth, and Lexie Davidson, my friends and colleagues in the industry. Of course, Amber Golden and Jessica Gertner, who both work with me here at Fed and Fit. All of these people; we’re all birds of a feather because we all cannot stop talking shop. It doesn’t matter where we’re at. If it’s someone’s birthday; we just want to talk shop. And it’s my favorite thing ever. I love it so much. Because it’s just the landscape of business these days. It’s just changing so quickly, and it’s so fascinating. And what it means, really, if you want to boil it down, is there is just a heck of a lot of opportunity for everybody right now. And that is just really dang exciting. You get to essentially; it’s the world that I feel like is coming into reality is the world that my parents promised me growing up. And I’m sure everybody’s loving parents said the same thing. But it was; “You can do anything you want to do.” My parents told me that over and over again. And maybe not everybody hears that. But I did. I heard it a lot growing up. You may have heard of Diane Sanfilippo from one of her best selling books, Practical Paleo or The 21-Day Sugar Detox, but did you know she’s been using ketosis as a tool the entire time? Does that mean she’s switched from her paleo roots to full-time keto? As you’ll learn in this podcast episode, Diane’s approach is different. For one, it removes diet labels and encourages flexibility and finding the right diet to support your lifestyle at this stage in your life, even if this changes over time. She also uses a SAVVY way of eating and tracks her food in another more effective format instead of subtracting from an arbitrary budget of 1,200 calories per day. Diane shares her knowledge on these topics in an easy-to-digest format in this episode, where we also discuss why ketosis is not about fat loss and what else people get wrong about a keto diet. We understand that food is fuel but figuring out what fuel is best for us can be challenging. Should we follow a keto diet? Or would paleo be best? What’s the difference? And what are the benefits to being in ketosis? Diane Sanfilippo argues that there is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to nutrition, and she encourages a focus on real food rather than getting dogmatic about a single ‘right way’ to eat. Diane is a Certified Nutrition Consultant who specializes in paleo nutrition, blood sugar regulation, food allergies and intolerances and digestive health. She is also the founder of Balanced Bites, an online resource designed to help people live a better life through real food nutrition, and cohost of the Balanced Bites Podcast. Diane is best-known as the New York Times bestselling author of Practical Paleo, The 21-Day Sugar Detox, and coauthor of Mediterranean Paleo Cooking. Her new book, Keto Quick Start, will be released in January 2019. Today, Diane joins us to clarify the difference between the paleo and keto diets and explain what it means to be in ketosis. She shares the benefits of being in ketosis, discussing who might do well on a keto diet and how to adapt it for the long-term. Diane also addresses how fat-fueled athletes could modify a keto diet and why keto is beneficial to many—but not all—women. Listen in to understand why eating whole foods is more important than following a specific diet and learn Diane’s best advice on finding the nutrition plan that feels best for YOU! Topics Covered [1:03] The difference between paleo and keto Paleo involves food choices, quality Keto = eating for specific metabolic state Possible to do both at same time [3:08] The metabolic state of ketosis Rely on ketones as fuel source, not glucose Body naturally shifts to produce ketones [4:17] How many grams of carbs in the keto diet Different from person to person 30-50 grams total [6:27] How to know you’re in ketosis Last longer between meals Mental clarity, improved sleep [7:38] Who might benefit from the keto diet Struggle on high-carb, low-fat diet Feel deprived or don’t enjoy food Type 2 diabetes, neurological or hormonal issues [8:40] How long you should maintain a keto diet Try for 3 months, discontinue if don’t feel good Can adapt for long-term with occasional breaks [11:06] Keto for fat-fueled athletes Need more carbs to replenish glycogen levels May experience headaches, sluggishness in workout [13:44] Diane’s insight on keto for women Beneficial to many women Discontinue if low body temp, irregular menstruation Lifestyle and relationships impact way food works [17:16] Diane’s emphasis on whole foods Misguided to think keto good regardless of food quality Not healthier in long-term if consuming processed foods [20:30] Diane’s favorite go-to keto meals Salads (leafy greens with protein) Lettuce wraps, chicken [22:51] What’s unique about Keto Quick Start Extensive info on choosing healthy fats Presents facts without being dogmatic [30:41] Diane’s best advice on health and nutrition Focus on real food Eat some animal products Give self grace Don’t get dogmatic Learn More About Diane Sanfilippo Balanced Bites Balanced Bites Podcast Diane’s Book Tour Schedule Diane on Instagram Resources Keto Quick Start: A Beginner’s Guide to a Whole-Foods Ketogenic Diet with More Than 100 Recipes by Diane Sanfilippo Practical Paleo: A Customized Approach to Health and a Whole-Foods Lifestyle by Diane Sanfilippo Books by Diane Sanfilippo Books by Leanne Vogel

In this special episode of Meathead Hippie, Em highlights two (out of many) of her most favorite clips from The Body Awareness Project Part One: Skin which is all about addressing the root causes of skin issues by looking deeper into our bodies. Lauren Geertsen brings awareness to the body’s “sacred symptoms” and stresses the importance of becoming attuned to the messages that our bodies are trying to send us. Lauren provides several steps on how to listen to your own body’s intuition in order to understand its place in your healing journey. In addition to Lauren’s piece, Diane Sanfilippo talks about the importance of knowing what we are putting on our skin with beauty and skin care products. Diane provides a great amount of useful tips on how to get rid of the harmful ingredients that are problematic to our systems by replacing them with ones that will work best for YOU. “If we know that there is something that we can change with our personal care, it is just another step that can prevent ourselves from using harmful products.” www.thebodyawarenessproject.com 1:00 Update On All The Things! 5:00 Lauren Geertsen: Sacred Symptoms 5:10 “Acne is a sacred message to our body” We cannot be fixed with pills The body is doing the best it can with the environment and materials its given 6:10 Learning How to Not Self-Loathe Health challenges are an initiation to our own healing journey It’s not just about acne - acne is only leading us in finding ourselves 8:00 Understanding of the Healing Journey Based on Joseph Campbell’s research Steps on how to become intuitive with your body 16:00 Diane Sanfilippo: Beauty and Skin Care Products 16:30 What We are Putting on Our Skin Your body may have immune responses to environmental toxins How to get rid of the stuff that we know is problematic to our systems 20:55 Examples of Typical Beauty Products that are Harmful Things can be safe on your skin that are not safe to eat How the that we eat is digested and its relation to the skin 28:05 Feeling Better After Switching Products “If we know that there is something that we can change with our personal care, it is just another step that can prevent ourselves from using harmful products.” Even natural ingredients can still give people negative reactions 32:20 Products to Not Live Without Charcoal bar and charcoal mask Oil cleansing/cleansing balm - Good for hydration! We did something TOTALLY out of character in the name of experimenting and staying open-minded...We did the 21-Day Sugar Detox. If you've been with us for awhile, you know that we are NOT proponents of dieting, detoxes, cleanses, etc. That's because most people do these things in order to achieve weight loss, which is really just a disaster waiting to happen. (Go back and listen to our very first episode 001- Meet Em & Kate to learn how we feel about dieting in general.) That being said, we wanted to do this detox for a few reasons: To remind ourselves how our clients are feeling and what they're going through when they do these types of things Research! It has been a LONG time since either of us restricted particular foods, so we wanted to see if we learned anything new about our bodies by cutting things out Emily loves Diane Sanfilippo (the creator of the 21-Day Sugar Detox), and regularly follows her (and her pets!) on social media Curiosity... What would it look and feel like to rid our bodies of sugar for 3 weeks? Needless to say, we were both surprised in what we learned. In this episode, we talk about how we felt the days before starting the detox, and how it changed us both mentally and physically. We talk about changes in digestion, snacking, cravings, deprivation, energy rushes and crashes, emotions, awareness, and so much more.  Listen in to hear our final verdict on the 21-Day Detox, and whether or not it's a good next step for you!   Episode Resources Diane's Sanfilippo (creator of the 21-Day Sugar Detox) Website- Balanced Bites, Facebook, Instagram 21-Day Sugar Detox Book 21-Day Sugar Detox Cookbook   Find Em at www.emilygoughcoaching.com Find Kate at www.katehoerner.com Full Show Notes: www.fitandnourishedmind.com/033 Join the private Facebook Group, or check us out on Instagram @fitandnourishedmind
