Let's start with the masculinity that's in deprivation. This is from Anna. Let's listen to the question right now. "Do you think masculinity is in deprivation in our society of feminism?" Well, the short answer is yes. And I'll tell you why, but before I begin, Mar, you know, you and I were chatting about this before we jumped on, and there's a dark and a light to feminism. Now, you as a woman, right, The majority of our audience is women and also men who are interested in accessing the feminine inside of themselves. That's why we have the upside-down triangle in our company logo so that I can master that myself. From a feminine perspective, what do you think the light and the dark of feminism are in your, in your mental view? So I'm still in the process of figuring out what's the good part and what's the kind of negative feminism. I've never been involved in the feminist movement at all because my opinion is every moment that has gone is not serving its purpose anymore. And that has happened with every big movement, basically. So I do see it in a way that it has brought us some freedom in a sense we're not dependent only on men anymore, which in a sense is good, but in the same sense, we have become the masculine in the world as well, because we get to work every day and we get to earn our own money and take care of children and do everything on our own. And I don't think that's a good thing. We just do way too much. Right. It's beautiful. Look, so it's a great question, Anna, and I'll start by, We'll go into 3 different chunks here. I think any movement when it begins, it does come from a good place, right? And so women's suffrage has been happening for a long time. You know, Eckhart Tolle talked about the pain body of women. And just like a lake, if you were to throw a rock, which could essentially represent the dark side of the patriarchy, which is a real thing. Patriarchy and feminism both have a dark and a light. That rock of the dark side of patriarchy was thrown into the lake. And in some ways, in many ways, the ripple is still being felt by the feminine, by women in the world. So I'm not here to negate the suffrage of women or the pain that women feel. I am here to just bring a different perspective. So with that vantage point, when it started, feminism I believe was about getting women to a place where they feel empowered, where they feel free. Unfortunately, like most movements here in the matrix, that movement was captured early 1900s by the IRS and by top wealthy families in America. And it was a way to get women out of the house and into the workforce for this reason, to double the taxes that were actually collected. And also it sacrifices the family... [14:50] How to Build a Mental Grit What is our next question? We have one from Jackie. She's asking about your advice on building mental grit during these crazy times. "What is a way you can build resilience and grit in these crazy trying times with social media, 24-hour news cycle, etc? How can you build the skills needed to survive your mind during these crazy times? I appreciate your advice and your answer. Thank you." Isn't Jackie asking the quintessential question of our times? In this day and age where we're also quote, hyper-connected on social media, and we have the most perceived that we ever had, I think really what we're talking about here is a pseudo connection where our energy and really our focus is being harvested. I don't know about you, Mar, but I'm very aware of how much I'm on my phone. Do you have a great relationship with your phone or what is that like for you? I wouldn't call it a great relationship. I'm trying to get away from it as much as I can. And every time I'm in a real social situation interaction, I try to never use my phone. It's just, to me, it feels so rude when I'm face-to-face with somebody and they're just on their phone. I can't stand it and that's why I'm not doing that. But yeah, I'm definitely trying to bring the screen time down as much as I can. That's my goal. Yeah, it's well said. Y'all can go on your iPhone, I believe on your Android too. And you can look at your hours. It actually shows you on your phone how many times you pick it up and how much time you're spending on your phone. So if you think you don't have time, I challenge everyone who's here with us to pick up your phone and how much time you're spending on your phone. I remember we had a guest on the show. It was Dr. Kyra Bobinet and she was a neuroscientist. She told me something very, very powerful. She said, look, no matter if you have children or not, even as adults, we're all being trained. We're all being trained on a neurological level to seek comfort and to seek what's called reward circuitry in our limbic system from the phone itself. Another great resource for this is the episode we did with Nir Eyal, where he talked about the variable reward of cell phones. I think, Jackie, what your question really points to is the phone, because the phone and computers and social media, these are the devices and these are the things that are actually down our capacity to have mental grit. Look at our ancestors, right? They saw, and I'm talking like even our grandparents, Mar, they saw maybe 150 to 200 things that were high decision-making things that they needed to make decisions in life. We see 10,000 things or more. So it's like 20 to 100 X times of input that's coming at us all day long. We are human. We are half beast and half spirit. And so I think it's no surprise that all of us are struggling in some way with mental grit. Now, when you say crazy times, a lot of these crazy times are propagated by what we see on social. We've all heard the term doom scrolling, right? It's actually why Mar and myself and our entire team, we design content that can actually go out there and hook people where they are. And that is essentially maybe in the bathroom, going to the bathroom, doom scrolling, or on the trolley or whatever, like just going through your phone, trying to get some kind of a mental reward from just the normalcy of where you are. And I think what we've lost is the ability to just be present in a moment... [24:30] Find The Courage to Grow Let's get to the next question. It's from Joanna. So Joanna is calling out the new age bullshit and she wants to know the difference between forcing versus cultivating courage to accept life's purpose. It's so good. Oh my gosh, how many people can relate to this? Let's hear Joanna. "Hey Josh, my name is Joanna. And my question for you is, I've heard you in the past talk about how in the new age, people say things like, if it doesn't feel good, then don't do it. And I've heard you call BS on that. And I would love if you could elaborate more about that, specifically, like with differentiating between, like, if you're forcing something, and it's, you know, like, to just switch lanes versus like, something is meant for you. But it might just be hard, you know, like how do you differentiate clarity around the path? Because obviously it's going to be hard either way. So it might not feel good either way. I hope that makes sense." It makes perfect sense. So the analogy would be when to grit and when to quit and how to have the emotional mental faculty in order to know when you should be forcing something, which I believe now is never that I'll get into, versus cultivating the courage to accept your life purpose. And this is multi-layered. So let's spend some time on this one because this is a very contextual question. So in the new age, we have these phrases, Mar, like good vibes only. I've even seen T-shirts and sweatshirts. Have you seen these? Good vibes only, or like social memes? Love and light. What does that bring up for you when you see that? Well, I've been through a lot, I know it's not true. It's just one part of it. It's like we live in a dual world and so always the shadow part and we cannot ignore it. If we only focus on the light and the love and the good vibes only, we're missing out on a lot. No doubt. Yeah, and you know what we're missing out on is we're missing out on the human experience of just having a process in general. I'll never, ever, ever forget this. I was at Paleo FX back in the day when Paleo was happening here in Austin, and I was doing a live podcast with Christine Hassler. And she said, never allow yourself to rob someone else of their process. And why that's so important is because when we focus on hyper positivity, or when we focus on good vibes only, or just love and light, we're missing out on a fucking myriad of the human experience that is grief, pain, anger, resentment, betrayal, jealousy. Human emotions are not necessarily good or bad, right? They're just emotions. And so energy in motion is really just a clue as to where the energy is asking to be or where the energy is asking to be channeled. So when I'm feeling angry or upset, that's actually a good thing. It's a good thing because my boundary has been broken in some way, or I'm not being respected in some way, either by myself or my partner or a friend or a colleague. Thomas writes: Hi Robb and Nicki, second time questioner with an answer on the first question. First was about long term Imodium use. I am one of the six who truly appreciate what you do and listen all the time. I'm also an LMNT believer. This one is for my mother in law. She has controlled diabetes with diet and exercise for years. I would say they are Paleo on the lower end of protein. Now her A1C and fasting glucose are going up. Lots of walking and biking (weather permitting on the biking). Walking upwards of 7-10 miles a day. Could this be causing her body to produce more glucose for energy if protein is low or is her time up and leading towards insulin after all these years. Would weights be a benefit? Failed to mention she is in her low 70's and pretty small framed. Junk food calories - can the junk be burned? I've been to a handful of PaleoFX events and my last one was a few years back where we connected at the LMNT booth and I just want to extend my appreciation for you two staying true to real food and nuanced information without turning into sh*thead snake oil salesman selling Beauty Counter or other garbage products like the majority of the old "real food influencers". I recently started ultra training and found that if I use whole foods for all my fuel I end up with a giant rock in my stomach and occasionally have to sprint off trail to test my below 90 degree wall sits on a tree to relieve myself. I've since gone towards gu's and swedish fish for my training and race fuel and the rest of my calories come from lean red meat, fruits, japanese sweet potatoes, avo oil, ghee, and trace amount of calories from a little slice of heaven called LMNT (plug). My digestion is great, my stool is strong, my skin is clear(ish. I always have trouble with acne), and my energy is solid. I just want to make sure I'm not causing any long term issues by crushing swedish fish, gu's, and chilled peanut m&ms during training and wondering if the fact that I'm currently a furnace for calories, if that furnace burns the "bad" stuff in processed foods along with the calories themselves. Stay salty, C Weight Loss and Maintenance Jenn writes: Hi Robb & Nikki, I want to start by first saying thank you for the entertaining and informative podcast as well as the delicious electrolytes! My question today is related to weight loss and how to potentially move that needle. Sorry for the long winded story and question! I'm a 34 year old female 5'7" and 175 pounds. I have a desk job, but I am active every day. I box/kickbox twice a week, crossfit once a week, swim laps once a week, practice yoga/mobilty several times a week, strength train at least once a week (aim for 2-3x) and I walk between 7 & 10,000 steps every day. I have in the past lost weight doing chronic cardio and extreme calorie restriction, and I have reached 155 pounds, which is where I feel the best (confidence and energy wise), but of course, once I stop the extreme dieting and exercise, the weight comes back on. At my heaviest I was 215 pounds but I am able to maintain 175 very easily now, but getting that last 15-20 pounds off and keeping them off is a major struggle. Peter Attia has said that your waist should be half of your height or less, so at 5'7", my waist should 33.5" and I'm at 37" and it will not budge. I eat a very clean diet, following Paul Saladino' animal based framework - beef, eggs, chicken, apples, blueberries, hard cheeses (parmesan and old cheddar), potato, carrots, squash, sauerkraut, mangos, bananas etc. and I follow Dr. Mindy Pelz's intermittent fasting framework. Chronometer shows that I'm eating between 140-160g of protein, 50-150g of carbs and the remaining calories are fat, and on average I'm eating between 1800-2000 calories a day and feel satiated. Taking my activities into account, I have between a 250 and 500 daily calorie deficit which means that I should be losing weight at a slow, steady pace, but I'm not. I'm wondering if my hormones are possibly causing a problem? I have regular bloodwork done and my thyroid levels are in normal range and my fasting glucose is 4.6 mmol/L and all other markers are normal. A problem is that I live in the socialist country of Canada and my doctor won't test my hormones because of my age and the fact that I don't have any health issues and I'm not obese (preventative healthcare does not exist). I've tried to look at CGM's and private hormone testing, and each of those will put be out of pocket between $500 and $1000, which is more than I can afford at the moment. I try not to overdo the fasting and exercise so as not to increase cortisol levels too much, I do have a stressful job and I purposefully take a break in the middle of the day to go for a walk or exercise to help keep those stress levels under control. I try to get outside for at least 30 minutes a day (not always possible due to the weather) and I get between 7.5 and 8 hours of sleep a night - usually good quality sleep but I do have the occasional restless night. The supplements I take besides LMNT are magnesium, Vitamin D and CBD. My only vices are coffee and tea, which I drink black or with a small amount of honey or coconut milk. I feel like I'm doing everything right, I feel healthy and have a great partner and life but I just can't seem to get the weight under control. Do you have any thoughts or suggestions that may help me to move the needle and keep the weight off for good? Or am I worrying over something that is not a big deal? Robb Wolf is a legend in my book. We met at PaleoFX years ago, and we have stayed in touch. Your body is talking to you 24/7. It is the most intelligent aspect of ourselves. The body and the subconscious mind know everything about us. The subconscious mind is responsible for 95% of your day-to-day actions. The subconscious mind accepts everything as truth. To have an effective habit change, you have to go into the subconscious mind and rewrite the story. Actions steps: Choose whatever workout you will do daily. Pick a diet that is healthy for a human being. Rewrite the stories that are in your head. [27:00] The Mental Pillar: Embracing The Present Moment You are the captain of your mental capacity. The ego is a very important tool; it's the CEO of your mind. For the most part, people operate on the daily because of the actions of their ego. You shouldn't kill the ego; instead, you need to put your ego in check. Also, being adaptive and being resilient are very important aspects of the mind. If someone is suffering from depression or anxiety, then they need to find the present. The only thing we have control over is the present. [33:00] Affirmations Will Help You Be More Present Affirmations help bring us into the present. Keith's favorite affirmation is “I am.” Focusing on your breath will also be beneficial. Once you're in the present, there is no past, and there is no future. [36:40] The Emotional Pillar: Learn How To Have Hard Discussions With People You Disagree With People can't have hard discussions anymore. The littlest things will get people offended. We should live in a society where we can have discussions with people we disagree with. One way to improve your emotional pillar is by doing a deep dive into an argument that you believe. However, you should be researching the other side of that argument. [41:30] The Spiritual Pillar: Find Your Relationship With Other The spiritual pillar is your relationship with ‘other.' Many people choose science as their relationship with other. There needs to be an entity that is higher than you. You can access the other through prayer or meditation. Spirituality does not need to be religion. [44:50] The Financial Pillar: Money Is Freedom “Money is not the root of all evil; evil thought is the root of all evil.” -Keith Money won't bring you happiness. However, you might be happier if you had money to create freedom. Money will be a magnifying to who you actually are. If you are a good person, money will be a tool to let you help more people. [51:00] The Relational Pillar and The Tribal Pillar: The relational pillar is your personal relationship with somebody else. You want to surround yourself with people that you aspire to be like. If you're doing what you love, and you're providing a good service, the money is going to come. Those are the types of people that Keith likes to surround himself with. Mantra #4: Influence is different than control (and influence is superior to control as there is really no such thing as control). Mantra #5: Triggered moments are the best times to keep one's mouth shut. Mantra #6: When you are triggered by someone else, try the mirroring exercise from Primal Uprising. Mantra #7: Escaping the zoo is all about keeping an open mind, asking questions, and avoiding fear and polarization. Meet Todd White, of Dry Farm Wines. We had a fascinating conversation about the wine industry and how larger companies are buying out small companies in the USA and other countries. Wine is not what it used to be. The large companies are still masquerading as smaller companies but the quality of the wine has gone down, win are buying created in large factories and the percentage of alcohol has increased to created a stronger wine for the general public. This has taken away from not only the taste and quality but the health aspects of wine. We both discuss our bad side effects from drinking commercial wines and how if feels like drinking poison. Todd created his company because of this and he wanted to create a way for health minded people who were really watching their sugar and alcohol intake to still be able to enjoy drinking wine. By doing his due diligence and sourcing unique vineyards in Europe where they still care about the quality of the wine, he was able to start bottling some really unique and delicious healthy wines. He sources from small farms in places like Italy where farms are family owned and run. Daily practice of fasting all day and eating only one meal at night while also enjoying a bottle of wine. This practice of fasting for 22 hours a day has helped Todd to become lean and sharp-minded while running his company. He has been practicing his fasting methods for 4 ½ years and has been able to stay in ketosis this way. It took him about a month to adapt to eat this way. Now he doesn't need to eat during the day and is not hungry. Willpower doesn't work and how you need to have a routine that you can stick to. To create a lifestyle of eating well on a Ketogenic diet and pay attention to how food affects you. Only then can you create eating as part of a healthy lifestyle instead of a diet or eating to sedate your thinking mind. Meditation and how doing even just 20 minutes a day minimum can help you have a happier life and can also help you stick to what's important to you in life. It can help you to avoid using foods, drugs and alcohol and movies as escapism. Sometimes we check out because the trauma of thought is too stressful. That's why meditation is so popular now, it's because it works. Cold Therapy: One of Todds practices daily is a freezing cold shower to start his day. He feels this creates a huge amount of energy for his workouts and for his day and he feels euphoric when he does it. It's not for bathing, that comes later, it's just for jump starting his body. He practices the Wim Hof method of breathing which is a deep breathing and breath holding technique which can help boost the immune system and help to withstand the cold temperatures much better. Cold exposure scientific studies show that it increases brown fat in your body which burns more calories and the studies showed an 80% increase in the metabolic fat burning rate. Mice who were exposed to cold therapy ate more than their counterparts and weighed less. It is also great for reducing inflammation in the body. Whether it's an injured limb or just overall chronic inflammation, cold baths and showers can help! Try starting with just 1 minute in cold water a day and increase your time to get up to 5 minutes. Tony earned his degree in Exercise Science from the University of Florida and is an American College of Sports Medicine certified Health and Fitness Specialist. He is currently based out of Jacksonville Florida where he works full time as a Personal Trainer and Wellness Consultant, helping busy executives, retirees, athletes, and soccer moms achieve their fitness goals. His personal perspective on health changed when he decided to learn how to run barefoot in the hopes that it would help his chronic knee pain. Within three months, he was pain free. Since then has run numerous 1/2 marathons, Super Spartan and Tough Mudder adventure races, and tackled challenges he never thought possible, such as learning how do a backflip at the age of 30. Tony began to realize that our modern lifestyles and technology might be at the root of other diseases and disorders and to test this theory, he began following the a gluten free and grain free Paleo diet. He eliminated wheat, most types of dairy, processed sugar, and all junk foods from his diet, focusing solely on ethically raised meat, green plants, fruits, nuts and seeds. After an initial 30 day test run, he saw significant improvement in his thyroid symptoms (surgically acquired hypothyroidism), chronic restless legs, ADD, binge eating, and body dysmorphic disorder. Looking for a way to share recipes and inspiration with others, Tony started a personal blog, LiveCaveman.com, and subsequently became a regular contributor to Paleo Magazine (PaleoMagOnline.com) as well as the host of the Paleo Magazine Podcast (PaleoMagOnline.com/radio). He has also hosted panel discussions and been a presenter at PaleoFX and the Ancestral Health Symposium and wrote the book on Paleo grilling ("Paleo Grilling - A Modern Caveman's Guide to Cooking with Fire"). He understands it can cause some major GI issues. but what about using it with the magnesium oil as a trans-dermal supplement (dissolving some baking soda and rubbing on)? Would that work? Is it legal? Would it have any effect on longer distances (the studies I have seen are shorter/middle distance stuff)? (He understands the energy system for longer distance racing is different - there may be less lactic acid build up, but assumes that in a 3hr marathon there would be some benefit) ~ In my response I talk about Transdermal magnesium oil, Transdermal bath flakes and Oxaloacetate. Jack says @ 01:05:21 He is a 15 year old soccer player and he has a "calf burn" in his anterior and posterior calf muscles. It only happens during games - not practice or conditioning. When it flairs up, it hurts/burns like fire every time he steps. The pain is a 6 out of 9 (worse in the morning). He occasionally wears knee bands but not consistently.
