Today, we have a conversation with KATHERINE FABRIZIO, psychotherapist and author of ‘ THE GOOD DAUGHTER SYNDROME: Help for Empathic Daughters of Narcissistic, Borderline, or Difficult Mothers Trapped in the Role of the Good Daughter,' a book about generational trauma that lies at the intersection of good girl conditioning and difficult mothers. Drawing from over 30 years of clinical practice and her own deeply personal journey, Katherine is dedicated to helping daughters reclaim their identity and live their lives free from the invisible chains of their mother's expectations. For many women, the mother-daughter bond is complicated by feelings of guilt, shame, and an intrinsic sense of duty. Katherine's expertise reveals how these dynamics often force daughters into the “Good Daughter” role, in which they're always focused on pleasing and never prioritize their own needs. This role, while seemingly noble, can lead to anxiety, depression, and a profound loss of self-regard. By blending clinical knowledge with her own story of breaking free from the expectations of a difficult mother, Katherine offers a unique blend of empathy, expertise, and empowerment that emboldens good daughters to reclaim their lost sense of self and become their own woman. Today, we sit down with Eamon Dolan, author of the new book: THE POWER OF PARTING released in April, to demonstrate why adults choosing to break up with toxic relatives may be the only moral solution for those enmeshed in unhealthy or abusive family dynamics. It's a deeply personal, poignant piece that debunks cultural messages and social taboos informing our collective bias towards reconciliation; speaks to the phenomenon's growing prevalence in society (estimated to affect up to 50% of the population) and destigmatizes estrangement for abuse survivors seeking to break the cycle of abuse. The Power of Parting has already racked up impressive acclaim as a well-researched, practical guidebook that positions estrangement as an empowering solution for abuse survivors seeking to escape cycles of trauma. On this episode, we discuss the four types of abuse, the spectrum of estrangement, the myth of the false idol of family, Eamon's powerful own personal journey to parting with his own mother, his beautiful life now with his wife and child, and leave listeners with feelings of hope for anyone who may be in a similar cycle. In 2017, Award-winning Washington Post columnist, Steven Petrow experienced one of the worst years of his life. He lost both his parents, separated from his husband, and learned that his sister had meta-static cancer. He began to question: how can one find joy during incredibly difficult times? He discovered that joy is not only around us, but within us. He examines this and so much more in his book THE JOY YOU MAKE: Find the Silver Linings--Even on Your Darkest Days, released this September. He explores the many expressions of joy and shows readers how to find, cultivate, and share it. Combining his personal experiences with research and expert interviews, Petrow asks (and answers) the question: “What if there was a way to find the joy in everything?” In today's episode, we discuss how the connection between joy and grief are inseparable, and Steven offers practical, prescriptive advice to find the joy around us.
