Karm Sumal is the co-founder and CEO of Daily Hive, previously known as Vancity Buzz. What started out as a passion project in his basement in South Vancouver, has now evolved into the biggest online publication in Western Canada. Daily Hive is a Canadian-born online news source, established in 2008, that creates compelling, hyperlocal content. Daily Hive embraces the unique qualities that exist in a city, and reports it to produce genuine conversation among communities.

In this episode, we talk to videographer Jordan Wade who is the founder of Storyhero, a production company that focuses on telling the stories of businesses, non-profit and social causes. Jordan has also covered the last 5 Olympics as a journalist and brand ambassador, finding the stories that nobody else does.  With an extensive background in journalism, working with Vancity Buzz and Novus TV, Jordan has mastered the art of finding the story and telling it to a captivating audience.

Daily Hive is a national news media company that started out in Vancouver as Vancity Buzz and now has offices in Calgary, Montreal and Toronto. As a site that started in 2008 amid a competitive industry with many regional and national giants it garners as much as 17M page views a month. Not too shabby for supporting a country of 30M. Karm did not dream of owning a digital media company. Born to immigrants in the East side of Vancouver, he became a CPA and controller for Blenz Coffee for the stable job. But him and his cofounders felt the Vancouver news media didn’t cater to the Vancouver he saw. The Vancouver that was made up of middle class immigrants that make the city what it is today. This started the 12 year journey of Daily Hive. In our conversation we talk about his early years of starting Daily Hive, what learnings he carried over from large corporation to running his own company, the media landscape and the constant ups and downs of operating a national media company.

Starting a website might be easy, but finding success in today’s digital publishing world is extremely difficult. Both audiences and advertising dollars tend to be concentrated between a few popular platforms, with the rest of the internet duking it out for the leftovers. But that didn’t deter today’s guest, Manny Bahia, from jumping in. Manny is the co-founder and Chief Revenue Office of Daily Hive—a news, information, and entertainment site servicing millennial audiences through localized editions in select Canadian and US cities. Originally a computer science major, Manny shifted to business after taking a microeconomics elective in his first year. It was during his time in University that he co-founded the website Vancity Buzz. Vancity Buzz would later be renamed Daily Hive as part of national expansion strategy into Toronto and Montreal. Expansion into Calgary and Edmonton followed, and just recently Daily Hive has gone international, adding Portland and Seattle to the family. Manny Bahia talks to us about growing up in Vancouver, what he learned about business from delivering pizza, and shares with us the journey from growing Vancity Buzz into Daily Hive.

Mark Brand opened his first restaurant in 2007 and went on to restore Save On Meats, a butcher shop founded in 1957. Save On Meats is not like any other butcher shop or lunch counter, because Mark has created a sustainable business model that serves the community.
