What keeps pulling us back to the grid when the box office never quite follows? We dive into the whole Tron continuum—from the 1982 cult seed and the overlooked Tron 2.0, through Joseph Kosinski's neon‑sleek Tron Legacy and the bridge‑building of Tron: Uprising, to the new red‑glow reality of Tron Ares. Along the way, we tackle the question fans argue and studios dodge: is Tron actually sci‑fi, or is it fantasy that borrows the language of computers to tell a myth about creators and creation? We revisit the ‘82 release headwinds against E.T., the home video era that gave Tron a second life, and the game that quietly solved problems the films wouldn't touch—interconnected systems, corporate corruption, and viruses as character. Then we contrast Legacy's towering strengths—world‑class design and that Daft Punk score—with its habit of hinting at great themes and jumping to the next set piece. We talk de‑aging that breaks immersion, the ISO genocide that begs for deeper stakes, and why treating the grid as a pocket universe makes the story read cleanly as fantasy. From there, we unpack Ares: fabrication lasers that print bodies, light cycles roaring down city avenues, and a Pinocchio arc that raises huge ethical questions without living in the answers. We debate why bringing grid logic into the real world collapses internal rules, how soundtracks keep rescuing the vibe (hello, Nine Inch Nails), and why executives remain convinced Tron can still become the thing we remember it to be. Our take: the concept is timeless, the execution needs courage—consistent rules, character‑driven choices, and ideas that don't blink when the action starts. If you love the glow but crave the follow‑through, this one's for you. Listen, share with a fellow program, and leave us a review with your verdict: should Tron lean full fantasy or build a harder sci‑fi spine? Subscribe so you don't miss what derezzes next.

The Cinematography Podcast Episode 333: Jeff Cronenweth Two-time Oscar-nominated cinematographer Jeff Cronenweth, ASC is known for visually defining modern classics like Fight Club and The Social Network. With TRON: ARES, he melded three distinct realities: the digital Grid, the gritty real world, and the retro feel of the grid in the original TRON. Jeff's involvement with TRON: ARES began through his long-standing relationship with Jared Leto. After working together on Fight Club, Leto, who stars as Ares and is a producer on the film, personally asked Jeff to meet with director Joachim Rønning. Jeff found that Rønning had established a remarkably clear vision for TRON: ARES from the start by storyboarding every scene. Having a clear plan was crucial, given the complexity of the environments and the technical demands of the shoot, which included a challenging seven weeks of night shooting in downtown Vancouver. Jeff chose ARRI DNA LF lenses for their character, flare, and artifacting, even for the digital setting, and the film was framed for IMAX. The core challenge for Jeff was using visual language to differentiate the film's three central environments, drawing inspiration from the franchise's past while exploring something new. 1. The Main Grid: Predictable Perfection Referencing the "pristine" aesthetic of TRON: Legacy, the new film's main Grid environment is defined by machine code—a world that is predictable and perfect. Look: Sharp, clean lines, saturated colors, and a highly geometric, mechanical feel. Color Coding: The classic blue/gray/white color palette is reserved for the good guys, while the presence of the bad guys is immediately signaled by the use of red. 2. The Real World: Embracing the Grit In TRON: ARES, for the first time, the computer programs emerge into the real world. Reality required a darker, grittier visual separation from the digital realm. Look: Shooting in Vancouver's downtown allowed reflections in large glass buildings to enhance the environment's texture. Practical locations, like a chase that concluded with lightcycles crashing into bales of recycled paper on a pier, further grounded the action. 3. ENCOM/Mainframe Grid: A Nod to the Original To connect back to the franchise's roots, the scenes where the character Ares ventures into the original ENCOM grid to find Flynn needed to match the look of the 1982 film. Reference: The 1982 TRON's grid scenes were shot in black and white and then hand-painted to achieve the glowing effect. To mimic this analog feel, Jeff intentionally doubled the amount of grain and desaturated the color, creating a look that closely matches the original.  Light is both a symbol and a weapon in Tron: Ares. To get the look, visual effects, costumes, props and cinematography had to work closely together. LED lights were installed in costumes, props and sets, and practically controlled through a dimmer board. This gave the VFX team a base to build upon. The lightcycles, some of which were built as practical, towable props, had LEDs built in and connected to dimmer boards as well. The lights provided real, interactive reflections on the actors and surrounding environment. Jeff also used light beams on set to simulate a recognizer scanning a high-rise office. The VFX crew could then track and enhance these practical effects in post-production. Jeff's choices were crucial for the post-production team. “We all knew what the goals were and what the scenes were going to be about,” he says. “It was a wonderful experience because it took all of us to be in harmony all the time.” See TRON: ARES in theaters Jeff is currently shooting The Social Reckoning, with director Aaron Sorkin. Ever fall in love with a movie's world while side-eyeing its logic? That's the neon paradox of Tron. We dive straight into how Steven Lisberger's Pong epiphany became a Disney gamble that pushed live action, backlit animation, and early CGI into a single, striking language—and why that language still speaks to us. From Moebius-inspired suits to hand-processed frames and vendor tag-teams like MAGI and Triple-I, we unpack the painstaking craft that birthed a timeless visual grammar of grids, glow, and velocity. We also confront the chewy stuff: a digitization beam that turns users into avatars, identity discs that are both passports and plot holes, and an MCP that behaves like a walled-garden overlord long before big tech made the term feel familiar. The story inverts expectations—Flynn as creator without control, Tron as titular champion without the spotlight—and lands somewhere between rebellion myth and systems metaphor. It's messy, yes, but the ideas are weirdly prescient: corporate capture of technology, AI consolidation of power, and the uneasy line between play, surveillance, and ownership.Along the way, we trace Disney's state of flux after The Black Hole, the greenlight born of a killer sizzle reel, and the great irony that the Tron arcade cabinet out-earned the film. The Academy may have snubbed the VFX, but the look rewired pop culture's sense of the digital future. We close by asking the big question: why do we keep wanting more Tron? Maybe it's the unspent potential, maybe it's the vibes, maybe it's both. Hit play to join a candid, curious tour through the franchise's origin story, its technical miracles, and the blueprint for a version that finally matches the glow.Enjoyed the ride? INTRO:I'm Hank, a nineteen year podcasting veteran, filmmaker, and YouTuber, and this is my review of Disney's Tron: Ares. This is a spoiler-filled review of the movie so if that's not your cup of tea this review won't be for you. Note: I saw this movie in 3D and I have never seen Tron: Legacy. I'm neither a Tron fan nor do I know much about the lore.BUDGET:$180-$220 million for production and another $100-ish million for marketing. We're looking at around $300 million dollars when it's all said and done. Three weeks in and we're at about roughly $125 million. OUCH! Profitability is way out of reach.SETTINGS:The world of Tron: Ares is pristine! The saturated colors jump off the screen even in the often dark settings. I found the visuals of this movie to actually match the inflated budget. Moreover, even the regular settings were shot with depth and attention to detail that is simply missing in most modern movies.CHARACTERS:I'm not going to reflect on all the characters, but I'll talk about the main cast.Jared Leto plays the one note Ares computer program that comes to life via the permanence code. I've heard a lot about how bland the Ares character is and I thought to myself how would I direct an actor to convey lines as a computer program made real? Probably just as stilted as his delivery. Could you have made the character be the one “special” character who delivers lines in a human way to set him apart from the others? I'm sure you could, but the way he delivered the lines, while bland, is probably the most logical course. I did like how he questioned what was happening, but those nuanced lines seem lost on many moviegoers. Greta Lee plays Eve Kim the CEO of ENCOM who is trying to find Kevin Flynn's "permanence code" to use for humanitarian purposes. While the character type has been done to death I did find myself having a soft spot for her based on her arc being tied to the death of her sister Tess. Her purpose driven story made sense but has been done ad nauseum. Jodie Turner-Smith as Athena seemed to finally be a role that worked for her. She's basically a 3D printed Terminator and I liked that they didn't stray from her mission and try to make her likeable.Evan Peters as Julian Dillinger was where the wheels started to come off of this movie. This tech billionaire trope is even worse than the Eve Kim checkbox character.Gillian Anderson's Elisabeth Dillinger was a waste in my opinion. She should have played the antagonist and been desperate to cement her legacy and then let things go off the rails from there. I'd of yeeted Evan Peters from the film faster than my ex can make a box of Girl Scout cookies disappear.Jeff Bridges (Kevin Flynn) is the white Samuel L. Jackson. He has devolved to a caricature. Arturo Castro as Seth Flores is simply miscast. That character has to be much younger in my opinion. Instead of a 40-year old, I'm casting someone in their early to mid 20's. HITS:The overall visuals are astounding! There's simply too much eye candy to ignore. From the suits, to the literal hacking where programs fight each other, I was blown away by the look and style of the film.I found the 3D printing insertion into the story to be both timely and cool. The effects for laser printing things in the real world were especially awesome. The 29 minute time limit for Ares and the others coming through to the real world was an idea I really liked. It reminded me of the recording limits back in the early 2010's where cameras that could record for 30 minutes or more were taxed at a higher rate than cameras that recorded for less than 30 minutes. It could be a nerdy deep cut

Michael Sheen is an award-winning actor. After finding his love for the stage with the West Glamorgan Youth theatre as a teenager, he studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. He spent the 1990s making a name for himself as a stage actor, shining in the classics from Romeo and Juliet to Peer Gynt as well as in 20th century masterpieces such as Look Back in Anger and Amadeus, receiving several Olivier Award nominations along the way.A relocation to the US in the early 2000s with his then partner, the actress Kate Beckinsale, and their young daughter Lily prompted a move into films. His breakthrough came in 2003 when he portrayed Tony Blair in a Stephen Frears film called The Deal. It was the beginning of what became an unlikely specialism: morphing into real people from recent history: Kenneth Williams, David Frost, Brian Clough, Chris Tarrant, and Prince Andrew – with two more outings as Tony Blair thrown in for good measure.Michael was born in Newport, South Wales, in February 1969, the eldest of two children to Meyrick and Irene. He grew up in Port Talbot from the age of eight and considers it his hometown. His first love was football, and he was spotted as youngster by an Arsenal talent scout to play for their youth team. His parents decided against moving the family to London and he turned to acting instead and graduated from RADA in 1991.Alongside the classic dramas, his range extends to appearing in fantasy and science fiction films such as The Twilight Saga and Tron: Legacy. Michael has said that the most meaningful project to him was a modern restaging of the passion play in Port Talbot in 2011, which involved the participation of a thousand local people, because it opened his eyes to the difficulties many of them were experiencing. He has since used his own money to fund the 2019 Homeless World Cup in Cardiff and set up an organisation which supports community groups. On Episode #139 of Fear and Loathing in Cinema, four brave digital explorers, Bryan, Dan, Preston, and Chelsea, once again jack into the pixelated abyss to revisit Tron: Legacy, Disney's 2010 attempt to convince us that glowing spandex and motorcycles could carry emotional weight. It's an apt time for such a quest, what with Tron: Ares now zipping into theaters, promising that Jared Leto, of all people, can lead us through the next neon apocalypse. Because if there's one thing this franchise teaches us, it's that humanity's greatest error is trusting any man in a long leather coat. They discuss their initial impressions, ratings, and the film's plot, which diverges significantly from its predecessors. The conversation covers character analyses, particularly focusing on Ares, Eve, and Dillinger, highlighting the film's themes, visual effects, and storytelling flaws. The hosts express their disappointment with the film's lack of depth and connection to the original Tron narrative, ultimately questioning the necessity of its existence within the franchise. The duo critiques the film's structure, likening it to a cash grab by Disney, and reflects on the future of the Tron franchise, emphasizing the need for meaningful storytelling.----------Highlights:0:00 ‘Tron Ares' Introduction7:05 Violating the Original Films20:52 Opening Scene26:26 The Protagonist: Ares35:59 Side Characters: Eve44:11 The Villain: Dillinger51:35 The Villains: Athena54:49 The Jeff Bridges Cameo58:19 The Climax1:01:59 Themes and Messages1:08:47 Lasting Impact & Missed Opportunities#tron #tronares #jaredleto #characterarc #characterdevelopment #disney #dillinger #athena #ares #storytelling #alostplot #film #movie #moviereview #themes #scifi #thegrid

This week on Forgotten Cinema: Now Showing, Mike Butler and Mike Field take their seats inside the Grid for the long-awaited "Tron: Ares". As the follow-up to "Tron: Legacy", the film brings dazzling visuals, IMAX-ready spectacle, and a pulsating score by Nine Inch Nails—all things that both hosts enjoyed. But while the aesthetics and sound are electric, the story struggles to keep that spark alive. Field and Butler agree Jared Leto is fine as Ares; the film's issues aren't his fault. Instead, they point to weak writing, underdeveloped supporting characters, and the frustrating decision to mostly ignore elements from Legacy that made that film stand out."Tron: Ares" is a feast for the eyes and ears—but not quite the follow-up the franchise deserved. After this, it might be at least another decade before we see the Grid again.

For the first time in fifteen years (Tron Legacy, 2010), we are finally returning to The Grid.  Though this time around, we are doing so with some new characters including the titular Ares (Oscar-winner Jared Leto) who is a digital soldier created by Dillinger Systems to be the ultimate "expendable" soldier to serve our military in the real world.  Unfortunately to the consternation of his creator Julian Dillinger (Evan Peters), Ares is still in need of ONE code in particular to ensure that he can actually last for more than 29 minutes in the real world before deresolution.  And that's where Eve Kim (Greta Lee) comes in as she's the CEO of the rival corporation ENCOM...yes the same ENCOM featured in the first two Tron films where the legendary Kevin Flynn (Oscar-winner Jeff Bridges) used to work.  Guess WHO might have actual posession of this "permanence code?"  As directed by Joachim Ronning (Kon-Tiki, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man Tell No Tales) and featuring music by Nine Inch Nailes, the race for the future is ON....and this time, it spills into the real world!Host: Geoff GershonEdited By Ella GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a textSupport the showhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

This week the Regular Joes go all in on Tron. Maybe you, like the most of rest of the movie going public did not see Tron: Aries last weekend, but Barry, Dave and Tod did. And, lest you doubt their commitment, they all re-watched Tron (1982) and Tron Legacy (2010). At this point, they pretty much bleed neon. The results are three different perspectives on the three films, and a sometimes surprising rundown of who liked what. There's also a tribute to the late, great artist Drew Struzan, whose iconic imagery, including posters for Back to the Future and Blade Runner, span generations. There's also a round of Random Topics, you don't want to miss Barry's contribution, and the inevitable What's in the Box. House of the Dragon S3 needs payoff right away; A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms works best if it stays grounded and character-driven. Wolverine aims for weighty, tactile combat; villains like Omega Red can raise stakes by limiting healing. Peaky Blinders is set up for a strong WWII film handoff to a 1953 sequel series that explores post-war power shifts. The Simpsons Movie 2 needs a big, timely hook to justify the leap back to theaters. October TV is stacked, and It: Welcome to Derry has room to dig into the town-wide effects of Pennywise. Memorable Quotes “There's something about a Star Wars movie where the budget is just whatever they wanted to do.” “Make the season climb, then drop a theater-only battle movie the very next weekend.” “Star Wars tech feels bolted together in the best way. You can almost hear the click of every panel.” “He operates perfectly in the gray area where politics can't see.” “The best horror makes you think about it long after the scare.” Call to Action If you enjoyed this episode, follow and subscribe, rate us 5 stars, and share the show with a friend. This week we're going back into the computer. No it's not The Matrix, it's the other franchise with a digital god creator myth, it's Tron Legacy! We talk about movie length music videos, the Disney de-aging machine, who Tron is for, and MOST IMPORTANTLY do you our listener think the human characters get uploaded into the computer or do you think they shrunk down so small they're in the computer? Host Andrew Ivimey will be performing in Halifax Nov 7, 2025 with special guests Luba Magnus (CBC, Grindstone Comedy Fest) and Jordan Foisy (This Hour Has 22 Minutes, Vice), and Clare Belford (New York Comedy Festival, Halifax Comedy Festival).
