Back again after a brief hiatus due to Jim Benning induced hockey hatred. We discuss Canucks (who are good now, did you hear?), Philadelphia bromances, and literature. The third one isn't a lie we got off track.
Matt and Blake digest another Canucks win, and continued excellence from the Lotto Line. We hear from Thatcher Demko, Elias Pettersson and Rick Tocchet from Pittsburgh, and discuss whether the Canucks should go "all-in" on this season. The guys talk about Jim Rutherford saying the Canucks want another top-6 forward, whether that should be a centre or a winger and the candidates at each position. We put the club's historic PDO into context with some of the best teams in modern NHL history, as well as Tocchet heading to the All-Star Game. Frank Seravalli stops by and says the Canucks should target a defenceman not a forward, that they shouldn't go all-in, and offers some names on the trade market including their expected cost. Frank says Sean Monahan, and an under-the-radar Flyers defenceman would be wise targets given their expected cost. Rink Wide: Vancouver host Jeff Paterson joins to talk about the Lotto Line, scoring first and holding two-period leads - the Canucks winning formula. Jeff wants to see this defence corps get a run before adding to it, and thinks "all-in" is too bold and that the Canucks shouldn't be seduced by names like Elias Lindholm and Jake Guentzel, rather should target cheaper rentals. The guys also talk about J.T. Miller and Brock Boeser, and the value they're bringing (despite rich contracts). Plus, we go To The People and hear from listeners/followers on topics such as Guentzel, Jim Benning's acquisitions and line nicknames. Presented by Applewood Auto Group. Yeah, it's 2023 and we're still talking about Jim Benning and how can we not? Tanner Pearson just got traded which means it's one more bad contract that this team has gotten rid of. Even though if were still trading draft picks.... Speaking of which...how different are Rutherford's version of the Canucks with the way they manage assets? We also talk about Casey DeSmith and not being guaranteed anything. And how does the leadership transition work? Other topics include the franchise carnage of the Jim Benning era, Émilie Castonguay sitting on a Hockey Canada panel, and ex-Canuck Zack Kassian getting a new opportunity in the Pacific Division. Rob Williams stops by to discuss his belief in the core, the piecemeal approach to power play coaching this season, Andrei Kuzmenko's Bali adventure, scoreboard problems at Rogers Arena, and B.C.'s favourite MLB team. And we go To The People to hear listeners' comments on segments and interviews from the past week, including a Tell Me I'm Wrong about the Lions fattening up on weak sisters, and a Hot Take about changing the Ryder Cup format.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Who let Jim Benning back into the Canucks front office? In typical Canucks fashion, they try to accelerate back towards mediocrity by trading their 2023 1st round pick (NYI) and 2023 2nd round pick to the Detroit Red Wings for defenceman Filip Hronek and a 2023 4th round pick. Jeff and Greg kick things off talking about the latter's Stanley Cup pick, why the price for second pairing defencemen continues to climb, and which teams might be interested in Patrick Kane (02:47). Next, the guys look at the state of the Florida Panthers after losing Aaron Ekblad, if the Norris Trophy is Cale Makar's to lose for the next decade and his biggest competition for the award this season (11:20). To wrap up, Jeff and Greg discuss the up-and-coming teams in the Atlantic, the ghosts of Jim Benning still surrounding this Vancouver Canucks group, and how they view the Toronto Maple Leafs' current situation (18:08). It's the premiere episode of Roxy Fever Season 5! Can you believe it? Five whole seasons! Definitely whole and never truncated, and of course we've always marked the beginning and end of each one. You think this is a new bit? I think it's you in fact who is new... new here! Anyway, the regular season has started and the boys record live during the Canucks season opener. We're looking around the Western Conference trying to size up if Vancouver has a shot at the playoffs this year, breaking down the Jason Dickinson trade, and wondering if Jim Benning and Jim Rutherford are so different after all... PLUS: Wayne Simmonds clowns on Steve Simmons, and Jackson thinks he sees Vyas out in public.
Travel writers Jim Benning and Elizabeth Harryman discuss Colombia's emergence as a tourist destination. The South American country is known today more for its hospitality and scenic beauty than drug wars and gangsters, they say. Among the attractions discussed are world-class coffee, a gold museum, and a major bicycle event.
Ryan and Arash are joined by Brendan Batchelor (radio voice of the Vancouver Canucks), Jeff Paterson (Host, Rinkwide Podcast) and Matt Sekeres (Co-host of Sekeres & Price) as they break down everything that lead up to that 4-1 December 4th loss to Pittsburgh and the subsequent firing of Travis Green and Jim Benning the morning after. The 2021/22 Vancouver Canucks season was turbulent, chaotic and confusing. From the announcement of the AHL Abbotsford Canucks to the OEL trade and all the uninspired losses in between, this was a difficult season to be a Canucks fan. The show started off with Matt and Blake talking about the firing of Travis Green and Jim Benning. Sekeres talking about the hiring of Bruce Boudreau and if it makes any sense. We ran the Francesco Aquilini, Stan Smyl and Bruce Boudreau press conference. Matt and Blake offered their thoughts on what they heard following that. Following that John Shannon joined the guys. What happened in Vancouver is something that happened in Montreal. Stan is in a tough spot but someone has to be there to answer the phone calls. Doesn’t see Smyl becoming the permanent GM. Even though he views Stan as a friend. His job in management is the same as when he was a player. He has done absolutely anything and everything that is asked of him. Talked about FA becoming more transparent. Says it’s Monday. Lets just wait and see how transparent they are with finding the right person to come in and run the organization and let them to the job. The M.O. of this family is that they are the most difficult to deal with in the league. Talked about Mike Forde but says that Bettman will be involved in finding someone. Says the players haven’t pull their weight in all of this. That bulletproof vest is gone now and it’s all on the players. Talked about when we may see a POHO or new GM. Seems like Chicago is waiting to the end of the season. Thinks the faster they put it together, the better. Again, says it’s Monday. Need to wait and see. Following John, Jeff Paterson joined in his regular spot, after he hustled back from the rink. Jeff talked about what he heard and saw from the rink after Francesco Aquilini addressed the media for the first time in a long time. As well as thoughts on Stan Smyl and Bruce Boudreau.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
On this episode of The Cross-Check NHL Show, Mary Clarke and Andrew Berkshire break down the plethora of coaching and management news across the league. The Vancouver Canucks finally made changes in firing Jim Benning and Travis Green, while bringing in Bruce Boudreau. Though these moves may be a little too late to save the Canucks' season as it stands now, a lot rides on the team's upcoming choice of general manager.Mere hours after the Canucks management news, the Philadelphia Flyers fired Alain Vigneault and Michel Therrien in the midst of a nine-game losing streak. As the Flyers attempt to get back on track to have a successful season, what should they do at the head coaching position with names such as Rick Tocchet and John Tortorella hanging around.Plus, Neal Pionk and Jason Spezza engaged in some dangerous tomfoolery in a recent game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Winnipeg Jets. With Pionk already serving a two-game suspension for kneeing Rasmus Sandin, will Spezza also sit for his retaliation run on the Jets' defenseman?Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!BetOnline AGThere is only 1 place that has you covered and 1 place we trust. Locked On Penguins - Daily Podcast On The Pittsburgh Penguins
Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan finally did it. He has changed up the second line after it badly struggled again on Wednesday night against the Oilers. Hunter goes into those changes in the first segment and if the players he switched make more sense on their new lines. He also reacts to Drew O'Connor likely getting another shot as he was playing well early in the season. After that, Hunter does a full preview for the Canucks matchup and focuses on how Pittsburgh can win the game, plus how badly Jim Benning has bungled the team. Finally, Hunter touches on the Monday matchup against Seattle and how the Penguins should still be kicking themselves over that decision on Jared McCann.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!BetOnline AGThere is only 1 place that has you covered and 1 place we trust. Jeff Paterson joined the show right off the top as we kicked off with pregame ahead of Canucks in Pittsburgh. We find out who JPat’s Do Something is. Darren Dreger of the Ray and Dregs Podcast joined Matt and Blake for the latest on what he is hearing with the Canucks. Dregs is hearing more of the same, it’s quiet. We can assume if Jim Benning remains as GM, he will continue to make and receive calls. Time will tell if he has the rope to do anything. Things have calmed a little bit from a media and fan perspective. Doesn’t mean the appetite has subsided. When there is weakness and trouble brewing you have other GM’s circling. Still at a point where it is dollar in and dollar out, which is problematic for most teams in the NHL. Talked about firing the coach and absorbing the bullet. Questions firing the GM when it won’t change much now. Says that it’s likely the roster doesn’t change between now and the trade deadline. Talked about a potential trade of J.T. Miller. Doesn’t believe there has been any dialect between VAN and MIN. Despite how attractive a player he is. Talked about Benning as a GM. Talked about how hot Travis Green’s seat is. Feels if Benning had the authority to fire him, he would have by now. We heard the Welcome Matt later in the show. It addressed the clash that may exist in the Canucks dressing room with their leaders. Another Hot Take Wednesday addition, with Blake’s turn to sizzle. Could he do it?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Matt and Blake run through clips of the Jim Benning press conference and talk about what stood out. It was a lot… Scott Rintoul joined Matt and Blake to take a look around the local sports landscape. Started talking about how much as changed since last week when we spoke. Talked about how last week he said EP40 had turned a corner. Turns out he hasn’t. Hoping the Sedin’s have sat down with him and talked to him about handling is lack of confidence. Talked about the terrible communication within this club. Talked about who could replace GMJB. Says that he would like to see Ryan Johnson over the Henrik and Daniel. Talked about PK. Comical is the wrong word for it. It is unbelievable how bad it is. Talked about Jim saying they are talking to agents about how their players are performing. It’s an indictment into how bad EP40 is playing that this became public. Talked about fan reaction in the stands. Talked about next steps for this team if it continues the way it is. Hopes that the meeting with GMJB isn’t the only meeting ownership they are having. Says they should be having that conversation with multiple people. Talked about the Whitecaps. Gives its a coin flip and that is a compliment for them know where they are going. Gives them a shot to go into KC and come out with a win. It would give them positive vibes going into the off-season. Really difficult to reconcile what it does to a fan stand point with all their off field troubles. Jeff Paterson joined in his regular slot to unpack the Benning presser from today. Says it’s pretty obvious he has no answers. Talked about why they should have made Jim available last week. As always, another entertaining version of Take 5 Thursday!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Andi Petrillo of One Soccer joined Matt and Blake to talk about the spectacle that was Edmonton last night. Talked about why she wasn’t as bundled up as her fellow panel members. Talked about this match being better than Costa Rica. As much about the field, the opponent played into that. Mexico was much more difficult, more tactical. That created the better game. Talked about the big takeaways from this game. The country coming together, the belief that something special is happening and people wanting to be a part of this. You are seeing the twinkle in peoples eyes that started with the first bronze medal for the women’s team. Talked about how good of a team this is now. What in the world is going on with this team when you have the top goal scorer in France to bring on as a substitute. The team is now bigger than some of the parts. A guy like David understands its bigger than him. Maybe deep down he has a problem but would never say. Talked about the weather. Would never give weather the credit for the win. They did that all on their own. Talked about where we might see the next match. Thinks we could know in the next 48 hours. Right now everything is on the table. Talked about how many more points Canada will need. Won’t even try to predict but KJ says 21/22 points. Panama is not going away, they are nipping at everyones heels. Nothing is safe right now, the team needs to get back to work. Four of the next six are tough road games. Talked about where Soccer falls into Canada’s sport hierarchies. This game is accessible to everyone. Darren Dreger, NHL on TSN Insider and host of Ray and Dregs Podcast joined Matt and Blake for the latest on the front office saga with the Canucks. Started off talking about the meeting between Aquilini and GMJB went. Doesn’t think that any promises were made. You have to take a look at the construction of the Canucks, and if that is the problem, there isn’t a whole lot that you can do with that.* Every game is going to be a must-watch. If they don’t respond favourably, then you will have to take a look at that. Changing a manager won’t often change the product on ice. An experienced GM would come in and want to observe the roster. We’ve been talking about the future of Jim Benning for awhile now. Not forecasting any sort of massive change here. There is a lot of accountability around to spread.* Ran down who needs to step up and do more. This is the reason Linden probably isn’t with the team anymore. He saw some of the flaws. The fix will take a long time. Dregs doesn’t get the sense that Travis has completely lost the room. Talked about Petey. Dregs sense is that he isn’t handling his situation as maturely as he should be. Darren doesn’t get the sense that anything would happen, even if it were a blowout. Talked about Francesco not speaking to the media. DD says it is normal. There are some owners that are more approachable than others. MTL media went hard after Habs owner. Talked about why Chipman talked recently. Sekeres and Price Canucks Reporter, Jeff Paterson joined Matt and Blake ahead of an early start due to Canucks vs Avs being a national broadcast. Jeff Paterson joined the show for his regular spot and started off by talking about the layoffs at 650 and his thoughts on the matter. Talked about how impossible it is to overlook PP practices with the absence of 40&43. Talked about how Travis Green is feeling with all this extra noise about players that aren’t here. JPat talked about Luke Schenn and how much hockey he hasn’t played and how much trouble the Canucks could be in if he is looking at top 4 minutes. Talked about Travis Hamonic and which way he is leaning. Talked about what they might find on the waiver wire, which is basically a flea market, in which they could replace Hamonic. Would rather overpay their stars than elsewhere in the lineup. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

NHL insider, Frank Seravalli joined the guys and started off by chatting about what the biggest news in the NHL would be right now. Dan Murphy of Sportsnet TV joined Matt and Blake and started off by talking about what it’ll be like to be back in the rink with actual fans in attendance. He reminisced about going into his 20th season on the beat and working with the recently retired Jim Hughson. He talked about the news of the day and how expensive those preseason tickets are going to be. Dan talked about the pressures the OEL will face when there aren’t many that compare to players his age or contract size. Thinks the Canucks can’t afford another anchor contract to go south. He thinks the OEL hook is at the forefront of the Sedin impact in their new role. They will be a very valuable piece as a conduit between management and players. Talked about how Travis Green feels going into the season and that he would have liked a lot of players GM JB brought in. Talked about what he wishes JB did that would have made it easier to sign Hughes and Pettersson. Murph has always felt that they would miss training camp, no matter how much cap space there is. Finished it off by talking about what made Jim Hughson. Saying he was always so consistent. Patrick Johnston of Postmedia and started off talking about our poll question and his favourite Canucks pxp commentator. Followed up by breaking down the Kaprizov deal for the Wild and how it compares to what Pettersson should sign for. This moves away from the Barzal discussion and the chatter in the public. PJ thinks Canucks fans have a legitimate reason to be upset with their two best players not being there. Finished off by talking about the Rugby Sevens tournament and how it went.
