The climatic events of 2021 (heat, fires, floods, storms) have brought home the reality of climate change like never before — and the urgency for media to address this crisis couldn't feel greater. But how do we talk about the climate emergency in ways that move us away from despair and disaster coverage? How can podcasts shift the conversation in ways the mainstream media cannot or refuses to do? How do we talk about climate justice, Indigenous sovereignty, and de-colonizing media? For this special release, tune into the live event recording from Podcasting Climate Change, a session at the 2021 Vancouver Podcast Festival. This recording features a panel discussion curated and moderated by Below the Radar host Am Johal. He is joined by Chief Patrick Michell, Julia Kidder, Eugene Kung and Grace Nosek. This Vancouver Podcast Festival event was presented in partnership with the Vancouver Public Library. On this very special live episode recorded for the Vancouver Podcast Festival, we talk about why people have trouble living in Vancouver with Mo Amir from This is Vancolour and comedian Katie-Ellen Humphries. We find out about the good and the bad of this city we call home.
We were incredibly honoured to be able to do a live taping of Warriors, Bards 'N Brews at this year's Vancouver Podcast Festival. We strayed from our usual format a little, and discussed Xena's influence on us personally and on LGBTQ media over the past 25 years. We get emotional over Xena, Supergirl and Gentleman Jack, crack jokes, and answer audience questions. And Chloe reveals her type! PS: the intro isn't very audible as the staff member introducing us wasn't mic'd, but the audio sorts itself out quickly! Episode 100 - This episode was recorded live at the Rio Theatre in Vancouver on November 9, 2019 as part of 2019 Vancouver Podcast Festival. In front of a packed house of energetic Dark Poutine listeners Mike and Scott went through a brief retrospective of some highlights from some of the most popular of the first 99 shows. The case covered in the second half of the show is the disappearance of Madison Scott, from Vanderhoof B.C. on the morning of May 28, 2011. Madison attended a party with friends and opted to stay alone in her tent at the Hogsback Lake Recreation Area after everyone else had gone. Madison was gone the next morning with her cellphone and keys, but her tent, truck and personal belongings were still there. She's not been seen or heard form since. Episode 095 - On a summer evening in 1995 sportscaster and former NHL hockey player Brian Smith, 54, was shot by a stranger as he exited the CJOH studios in Ottawa, Ontario after a day's work. The two me had never met, but the gunman, a man named Jeffrey Arenburg from Bridgewater, Nova Scotia was convinced that the murder of the beloved sportscaster would bring attention to his plight, and perhaps, put a stop to his thoughts being stolen and broadcast by Smith's TV station. Arenburg, who'd suffered from paranoid delusions for years, and had been in and out of court and hospitals, was found NCR, not criminally responsible, for the murder. Chapter 1 Hot question of the day CoverGirl cosmetics is now certified completely cruelty-free - making it the biggest beauty brand to earn the Leaping Bunny logo. When it comes to products that you purchase, do you care if whether or not they test on animals? Yes No Chapter 2 The winners and losers of the United States midterms Guest: Reggie Cecchini Washington DC producer for Global National Chapter 3 Conservative Leader says Tony Clement had ‘terrible lapse of judgement' after Clement resigns amidst sextortion scandal The leader of the Conservative Party, Andrew Scheer, was asked by journalists today about the security concerns presented by this, seeing as Tony Clement was one of the parliamentarians on the top-secret National Security and Intelligence Committee. Guest: Tim Powers Vice-Chairman of Summa Strategies Chapter 4 Madeleine Baran discusses the acclaimed podcast In The Dark The award-winning podcast In the Dark, Season 2, looks at the case of Curtis Flowers, a man in Mississippi who has been tried for the same murders six times. Despite pointing out the faulty evidence and witness testimony in the podcast, Flowers still remains behind bars and on death row. However, some good news came recently when it was announced that the Supreme Court will hear Flowers' case by June! The justices will examine if District Attorney Doug Evans had a history of racial discrimination in jury selection. In season one, In The Dark examined the rare crime of child abduction. The reporters examined the case of Jacob Wetterling, the 11 year old boy from St. Joseph, Minnesota who went missing on October 22, 1989. His abduction remained a mystery for nearly 27 years… until the team from In The Dark started examining the faulty police investigation of his disappearance. Lead In the Dark reporter Madeleine Baran is in Vancouver to speak at the Vancouver Podcast Festival, running Nov. 8-10. Guest: Madeleine Baran Investigative reporter for APM Reports and the host and lead reporter of the podcast In the Dark. Chapter 5 Does warning kids of ‘stranger danger' give them the right tools for interacting with people? Earlier in the show we spoke with Madeleine Baran of APM's In The Dark, and she discussed the first season of the podcast that dealt with the abduction of 11 year old Jacob Wetterling. In that series, the parents of Jacob Wetterling discussed how that case was a classic case of ‘stranger danger', but how, despite what happened to their son, parents should not parent their children based on what happened to their son. Instead, the Wetterling family encouraged parents to remember that children are often harmed by someone they know. Geoff Newiss is the Director of Action Against Abduction in the UK , and his organization feels that the idea of stranger danger has fostered an unhealthy amount of fear of strangers among children. It inspired him to devise a new safety message for children, which he thinks is more fit for purpose - not least because the majority of abductions are committed by an adult already known to the child. Guest: Geoff Newiss Director, Action Against Abduction Chapter 6 A young man ate a garden slug on a dare, became paralyzed and died 8 years later Guest: Dr Heather Stockdale Walden Asst. Professor of Parasitology at the University of Florida Chapter 7 Jeff Sessions is fired US Attorney General Jeff Sessions has resigned as the country's chief law enforcement officer at the request of the President. Guest: Reggie Cecchini Washington DC producer for Global National Chapter 8 SIMI'S LOSER AND WINNER OF THE DAY Loser NO LOSER Winner CoverGirl cosmetics is now certified completely cruelty-free - making it the biggest beauty brand to earn the Leaping Bunny logo - To be awarded the globally-recognised Leaping Bunny certification, presented by Cruelty Free International, a brand must eliminate animal testing from every level of product production - including in all ingredients and suppliers. “No other certification program has the rigour that seeks to completely eliminate animal testing from a brand's supply chain - it certifies that no CoverGirl products or ingredients are tested on animals, either by CoverGirl or its suppliers,” the press release states. In addition to passing the “rigorous process,” the drugstore beauty brand will also have to undergo ongoing checks to ensure it is maintaining cruelty-free production.
