Earlier this week, the feds announced the sovereign wealth fund. The conservatives, including Andrew Scheer, member of Parliament for Regina—Qu'Appelle, former Conservative Party leader and former Speaker of the House, are calling this the "debt fund." Scheer joins the show to share why he thinks Canadians would be better off without this fund.
After another conservative MP crossed the floor to the Liberals earlier this week, we wanted to get thoughts from someone inside the Conservative tent. Andrew Scheer, member of Parliament for Regina—Qu'Appelle, former Conservative Party leader and former Speaker of the House, joins the show to tell us how he reacted to the floor crossing as well as some recent policies the Conservatives have put forward.
In the midst of escalating global tensions, particularly with the disastrous Epstein War in Iran initiated by Trump and Netanyahu, Canadians cannot afford to ignore the troubling behaviours of our political leaders at home. Recently, Canada's Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has faced significant ridicule in Politico, raising serious concerns about his leadership. Furthermore, revelations regarding a secret meeting involving his team, including Andrew Scheer, in Washington, DC, have sparked alarm regarding our national sovereignty. When pressed for details, Scheer's inability to recall who he met with is not just dismissive; it's alarming. This situation demands transparency from our leaders. The Conservative ties to the Trump regime, especially regarding discussions on separation and funding, cannot be taken lightly. As discussed on Keith Leslie's and Mark Cripps' panel with host Laura Babcock, these are not merely political missteps but threats to our very identity as a nation. Moreover, we must hold Ontario Premier Doug Ford accountable for his Trump-style power grabs, and his failure to keep promises on key issues such as housing and healthcare, his controversial plans for Toronto Airport, and the OSAP program for students and one of his appointments in Niagara had to resign for having a signed copy of Hitler's manifesto! His actions are undermining the trust that Canadians place in their government, and calls for protests are happening.Meanwhile, Prime Minister Mark Carney is impressing Canadians and the world with his leadership and investments in protecting the North. There's so much at stake right now. We need to engage with these critical discussions and demand answers from our leaders. Let's not remain passive while our sovereignty is put at risk by hidden agendas. A MOment: Social media now rewards outrage, hypocrisy, and dehumanization — often at the expense of truth and real people. This is VANCOLOUR host Mo Amir examines how online culture blurs the line between opposing ideas and celebrating violence. With recent online controversies involving Rachel Gilmore, Bryan Passifiume, and Andrew Scheer, social media has clearly become a modern town square for public hangings and witch hunts, driven by vanity and tribalism, not truth or principle. The Conservatives are looking to magnify a potential rift in Liberal caucus on Tuesday, with a motion that would force MPs to show their support for a new oil pipeline to B.C. and changes to the North Coast tanker ban. Andrew Scheer tells Power & Politics his party is putting forward the motion because 'Canadians deserve clarity,' and accuses Prime Minister Mark Carney of delivering a different message to Alberta than other parts of the country. Plus, Catherine Abreu explains why she was one of two members who resigned from Canada's Net-Zero Advisory Body last week, saying the Carney government 'at no point' sought its advice on the oil and gas projects it's supporting.

In the latest episode of The Line Podcast, recorded on May 9, 2025, Matt and Jen round up the week in Canadian politics — and things are getting weird again. They start with Pierre Poilievre's decision to run in an extremely safe riding and tap Andrew Scheer as the party's interim House leader. Matt says both choices radiate loser energy. But he also mounts a reluctant defence of the Tories — agreeing, to his dismay, with the Twitter mob: the CPC can run better campaigns, but it can't beat the bogeyman version of itself that lives rent-free in the heads of many Canadians. He argues that if Poilievre had gone to the Oval Office and done exactly what Mark Carney just did, word for word, the reaction would have been scorched-earth. But when Carney does it, it's praised (and Matt agrees that Carney did well!). Jen pushes back — hard. She says the Conservatives need to stop whining about perception gaps and just fix what they can fix. Fatalism is not a strategy. This episode of The Line Podcast is brought to you by Unsmoke Canada. Canada can be a global leader in reducing the harm caused by smoking, but it requires actionable steps, including giving adult smokers the information they need to choose potentially less harmful alternatives. Learn more at Unsmoke.ca.In the second segment, they turn to the provinces. Matt delivers an update on Ontario, which is — by his account — a smouldering pile of nonsense. He brings a few choice examples. Then Jen takes a deeper dive into Alberta separatism and what's fuelling it. They might take a few detours along the way, but you knew that already. This episode of The Line Podcast is also brought to you by Innovative Medicines Canada. With a new government in place, one thing remains clear: Canada must continue to prioritize patients and healthcare innovation. Innovative Medicines Canada is focused on collaborating with all levels of government to improve access to life-saving medicines and develop a healthcare system that prioritizes patients, ignites innovation, and drives economic growth.Canada's innovative medicines sector plays a critical role—not just in health outcomes, but in keeping us competitive on the global stage. That's why, even during a moment of political change, Innovative Medicines Canada is staying focused on the issues that matter most to Canadians. And as Canada moves forward with national pharmacare, Innovative Medicines Canada believes it's possible to expand access without limiting choice—by strengthening what works and fixing what doesn't.Visit innovativemedicines.ca to learn more. Finally, Jen surprises Matt with a gut-check on a theory she's been turning over — something that crosses the wires between politics and religion. It's going to make someone mad. But after a pause, Matt decides it's probably not cancel-worthy. Probably. All that, and more, in the latest episode of The Line Podcast. In this episode, Elizabeth Dubois chats with Melanie Paradis, President of Texture Communications, to dissect the theory of planned behaviour and its application in political communication. With Melanie's extensive background in political strategy and public relations, and her roles on high-profile political campaigns, this discussion explores how psychological principles underpin effective political messaging and voter engagement strategies.Additional Resources: Elizabeth relies on The Theory of Planned Behaviour: Reactions and Reflections and Knowledge and the Prediction of Behavior: The Role of Information Accuracy in the Theory of Planned Behavior to explain the theory. Melanie underlines the role of third-party advertising as it relates to elections and advocacy in Canada. You can learn more about this through an article published by Policy Options titled Third parties strive to become a driving force in elections. Melanie describes the Conservative Party of British Columbia's "I'm trying something new" advertisement, released in October 2024, as an example of an advertisement targeting swing voters.Throughout the episode, both Elizabeth and Melanie refer to foreign interference and how misinformation and disinformation are impacting the Canadian political communications environment. Similar themes were discussed in the Wonks and War Rooms episode Propaganda, Government Comms, and Disinformation with Shuvaloy Majumdar. Melanie makes several references to the 2017 Conservative Party of Canada leadership race, where Andrew Scheer beat 13 other candidates by a narrow margin. You can learn more about this leadership race, and the lessons learned from it, in Eric Grenier's analysis titled What the 2017 Conservative leadership race told us about what it takes to win.
