In this documentary, Neil travels back to his home town of Birmingham to learn more about what he considers to be the city's best kept cultural secret – Grosvenor Road Studios: the family-run sound facility that came to be known as ‘Birmingham's Abbey Road'. Still in operation today, the studios were founded 80 years ago by John Taylor, and his business partner Charles Hollick, to record music - which they did prolifically; as well as expanding into creating soundtracks and recording dialogue for iconic television series' and blockbuster movies. To help reveal the story, Neil talks with John Taylor's wife and creative partner Jean Taylor, their two successful musician sons Christopher and Richard Taylor, and Birmingham popular music academic, Jez Collins, from the Birmingham Music Archive. Dana and Tom with returning guest, Adam Vanderwerff, discuss M*A*S*H (1970): directed by Robert Altman, written by Ring Lardner, Jr., music by Johnny Mandel, starring Donald Sutherland, Elliott Gould, Tom Skerritt, and Robert Duvall.Plot Summary: M*A*S*H is a sharp, irreverent satire that reimagines the war film as a chaotic and darkly comedic theater of absurdity. Set in a mobile army surgical hospital during the Korean War, the film follows the misadventures of surgeons Hawkeye Pierce (Donald Sutherland) and Trapper John McIntyre (Elliott Gould), whose antics clash with the rigid military hierarchy. The film's freewheeling ensemble style captures the camaraderie and anarchy of a unit forced to find humor amidst the horrors of war. With its anti-authoritarian ethos and whip-smart dialogue, the film critiques the machinery of war and conformity without sermonizing. The overlapping conversations, naturalistic performances, and subversive tone make M*A*S*H both a product of its era and a timeless commentary on the absurdities of human conflict.Guest:Adam Vanderwerff (Duncan Disability Law)Previous Episodes: Office Space (1999), Ghostbusters (1984)Chapters:00:00 Introduction to MASH and Its Legacy03:56 Relationship(s) with M*A*S*H08:02 What is M*A*S*H About?12:42 Cultural Impact of M*A*S*H18:57 Impact of First F-Bomb in Cinema History?21:09 Plot Summary for M*A*S*H22:22 Did You Know?24:51 First Break26:22 Best Performance(s)32:50 Best/Favorite/Indelible Scene(s)38:43 Second Break39:53 In Memoriam42:08 Best/Funniest Lines43:47 The Stanley Rubric - Legacy48:19 The Stanley Rubric - Impact/Significance49:01 The Stanley Rubric - Novelty52:57 The Stanley Rubric - Classicness58:57 The Stanley Rubric - Rewatchability01:01:59 The Stanley Rubric - Audience Score and Final Total01:03:12 Remaining Questions for M*A*S*H01:10:45 Thank You to Our Guest and Final Thoughts01:15:42 CreditsYou can also find this episode in full video on YouTube. You can now follow us on Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, or TikTok (@gmoatpodcast).For more on the episode, go to: https://www.ronnyduncanstudios.com/post/m-a-s-h-1970-ft-adam-vanderwerffFor the entire rankings list so far, go to: https://www.ronnyduncanstudios.com/post/greatest-movie-of-all-time-listKeywords:MASH, film analysis, cultural impact, legacy, comedy, war film, character performances, podcast, movie review, Donald Sutherland, Robert Altman, Robert Duvall, Elliot Gould, Tom SkerittRonny Duncan Studios

Ben and Rob get what they deserve for ‘Joker', Todd Phillips' 2019 character study smuggled into box-office history under a supervillains cape. Starring Joaquin Phoenix, Robert DeNiro, Zazie Beetz and Frances Conroy, ‘Joker' tells the story of mentally unwell and financially destitute Arthur Fleck and his journey to become a stand-up comedian; a journey that takes a terrifying wrong turn when Gotham repeatedly turns it back on his suffering. The film lacking an appearance from Batman didn't stop ‘Joker' delighting DC Comics fans as deeply as the critics; becoming the first R rated movie to cross the billion dollar mark at the box office. But how did this seventies morality tale get green-lit in the first place? What inspired Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix as they concocted this beautifully affecting film? Is this film just ripping off Scorcese's ‘King Of Comedy'? Does this entire film we it's existence to an advert for Suicide Squad? Or maybe “Sunset Boulevard,” starring Gloria Swanson as the aging, deranged silent-film star Norma Desmond. But there are also noir westerns. None is more celebrated than the 1948 "Blood on the Moon," starring Robert Mitchum. It's a classic Western immersed in the film noir netherworld of double crosses, government corruption, shabby barrooms, gun-toting goons, and romantic betrayals. In the 1000th edition of In Our Time, Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss arguably the most celebrated film of the Swedish director Ingmar Bergman (1918-2007). It begins with an image that, once seen, stays with you for the rest of your life: the figure of Death playing chess with a Crusader on the rocky Swedish shore. The release of this film in 1957 brought Bergman fame around the world. We see Antonius Block, the Crusader, realising he can't beat Death but wanting to prolong this final game for one last act, without yet knowing what that act might be. As he goes on a journey through a plague ridden world, his meeting with a family of jesters and their baby offers him some kind of epiphany. 1971 was a great year for cinema. Woody Allen, Robert Altman, Dario Argento, Ingmar Bergman, Stanley Kubrick, Sergio Leone, George Lucas, Sam Peckinpah, Roman Polanski, Nicolas Roeg and Steven Spielberg, among many others, were behind the camera, while the stars were also out in force. Warren Beatty, Marlon Brando, Michael Caine, Julie Christie, Sean Connery, Faye Dunaway, Clint Eastwood, Jane Fonda, Dustin Hoffman, Steve McQueen, Jack Nicholson, Al Pacino and Vanessa Redgrave all featured in films released in 1971.The remarkable artistic flowering that came from the ‘New Hollywood' of the '70s was just beginning, while the old guard was fading away and the new guard was taking over. With a decline in box office attendances by the end of the '60s, along with a genuine inability to come up with a reliable barometer of box office success, studio heads gave unprecedented freedom to young filmmakers to lead the way.Featuring interviews with cast and crew members, bestselling author Robert Sellers explores this landmark year in Hollywood and in Britain, when this new age was at its freshest, and where the transfer of power was felt most exhilaratingly.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/writers-on-film.
