Interview with Jonathan Rundman - Ep. 57

Our episode features Jonathan Rundman, singer/songwriter from Minneapolis, who has a new Americana rock and roll album called "Waves". It is a fascinating and fun talk about 80's rock music, The Silos and the circle of friends that includes Cracker, The Vulgar Boatmen, and all they that have influenced.  If you dig 80s rock, his tales are what you might want. We talk about Bob Seger, the Rainmakers, The Hooters, and lots more. Born and raised in the isolated Finnish-American communities of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, and now based in Minneapolis, Rundman twists smart, cinematic, rock and roll lyrics, pop hooks, and garage attitude into his songs.   In addition to his solo career, Rundman tours and records as keyboardist for legendary New York City-based Americana/rock band The Silos. Rundman released his first new album in ten years in April, 2025 and is on a Midwest tour opening for the Silos. For the past decade he's been touring and recording with Walter Salas-Humara and The Silos.   The pre-release single from the album, “Elizabeth, Don't Waste Your Breath” was co-written with Salas-Humara and the second single from the record, “Let's Put On An Opera”, champions the artistic process, backed by vintage analog keyboards from the 1960s, including a Wurlitzer electric piano, a Vox Continental organ, and a real tape-powered Chamberlin. His producer, Ron Gomez, told Jonathan that he should record some interstitial music, instrumental pieces that weave in between the songs. "We talked about albums we liked, featuring these kinds of moments, like the acoustic transition after the song 'Nights of Mystery' by the Georgia Satellites. Referencing "Nights of Mystery"?  I'm all in. That's what I needed to hear. You like the Vulgar Boatmen? Del Fuegos? Replacements? Gear Daddies? Cracker? A little Elvis Costello and Rockpile? You need to be in too. www.rockpoandroll.com email the show: rockpoprollpodcast@gmail.com Instagram: @rockpopandroll

S4-Ep.1 The Doors-Self-Titled Release (Elektra) Released January 4, 1967, Recorded August of 1966 Elektra Records  The Doors is a groundbreaking debut album that blends rock, blues, jazz, and psychedelia with a unique poetic sensibility, largely driven by Jim Morrison's dark, introspective lyrics. Recorded in just six days, the album features a distinctive sound, notably Ray Manzarek's Vox Continental organ, Robby Krieger's flamenco-inspired guitar work, and John Densmore's jazzy drum style. Key tracks like "Light My Fire," with its iconic organ riff and extended solos, and "Break On Through (To the Other Side)," with its rebellious energy, set the stage for the band's rise to fame. The album's fusion of musical styles, alongside Morrison's mysticism and philosophical themes, made it an instant classic, peaking at #2 on the U.S. charts. While not all tracks are equally memorable, The Doors established the band as one of rock music's most innovative and influential forces during the 1960s. Signature Tracks Discussed "Light My Fire," "Break On Through (To The Other Side)"   "The End"  Playlists: YouTube Playlist, Spotify Playlist

What if your Amazon packages could talk? What if they had palpitating, expectant hearts as they sped to your house? And, what a let down, after you'd ripped them open, shredded them, and left them for the recycler. What ingratitude, after their selfless commitment to your happiness.Tool-maker, turned bassist Gary Unwin brings this anthropomorphic idea to life, abetted by lead singer and Vox Continental organist Brian Bennett. Here, courtesy of the Hi Fi's, a busy, up and coming band of wannabe British invaders plying their rock n roll trade in Germany (as the Silver Beetles had done before them) - you get all the cringy, crooning drama (along with thumping timpani) you could want - and it's TNT.I discovered this diamond on an obscure Star-Club singles vinyl collection that Rich sent me after I bought my new turntable, and it captivated me from the first play. Of all the possible lyrical manifestations, a monologue delivered by a cardboard box, once lovingly wrapped and sent by one ardent lover to another via “the parcel farm,” and then abandoned, was beyond unexpected… and, just what I needed.

She weaves this laid back magic over old school soul.Renowned producer Jason Miles adds his retro sounds on the Fender Rhodes, Vox Continental and Wurlitzer. “I really appreciate the opportunity to work with Jason and so many incredible musicians in making the dream of recording my first full-fledged project. Their incredible musicianship and craftsmanship inspired me every time I was in the studio.”After opening the EP with a dreamy and sensual twist on Hoagy Carmichael’s rarely covered gem “Winter Moon,” Rebecca keeps the sense of traveling nostalgia going with “What We Had.” This lush and graceful look back at a joyful romance was penned by Rebecca, her father Dennis and guitarist Jonah Prendergast. Rebecca and Dennis also co-wrote the set’s other original “Feel Alive,” a charming declaration of love and how it changes the heart. Also included on the EP is Rebecca’s 2016 single of "Jet Samba,” marking the first time legendary Brazilian composer Marcos Valle’s 2005 instrumental hit was recorded as a vocal. The track received a 4 star review in the January issue of the United Kingdom's premier jazz publication, Jazz Journal. Robert Berry has managed to survive in the treacherous minefield that is the music business and flourished as a performer, songwriter and producer. It seems he's done it all. While he may be best known as the vocalist/bass player in the ELP spinoff, 3, with Keith Emerson and Carl Palmer, Berry impressive list of credits include a stint fronting Ambrosia, and long running affiliations with Alliance, December People, and the Greg Kihn Band. Berry has released 5 solo albums, contributed to a number of high-profile tribute albums and has an impressive track record in the studio. He grew up in a musical family in what would become Northern California’s Silicon Valley. It didn’t take long before he appropriated a Vox Continental organ from his father’s music store. By the time he was a freshman in high school, his group had released a single that went on to become a regional favorite. Although he denies it, according to his school mates, Berry was known as his school’s first full-fledged rock star. His bands became solid fixtures on the Bay Area college and club circuit, where they worked constantly. It was during this period that his interest in multi-track recording blossomed. Legend has it, Berry somehow finagled the very first Teac four-track recorder to arrive in the valley. It wasn’t long before he had written and recorded an experimental twenty-two song ‘rock opera’. As his quest for knowledge grew he managed to snag a part-time position as ‘assistant everything’ person at a busy San Jose recording studio. By the time he was a senior in high school he had acquired a reputation as a solid performer and in-demand studio musician. 2016 was a big year for Robert Berry as he met with pal Keith Emerson in Los Angeles to discuss a 30th anniversary release of the long awaited follow up to the debut 3 album. If that wasn’t enough, he co-wrote 11 all new songs, produced and played Rekihndled, the Greg Kihn Band's first studio album in over 20 years. The year 2017 was noteworthy for some major efforts. Early in the years, Berry, on bass and lead vocals joined with Terry Brock (GIANT, STRANGEWAYS) on lead vocals, Gary Pihl (BOSTON, SAMMY HAGAR, ALLIANCE) on guitar, and Matt Starr (ACE FREHLEY, MR. BIG) on drums, to form ALL 41. They release the band's debut album, "World's Best Hope". Simultaneously, he mounted a dedicated effort to complete his collaboration with Keith Emerson on the long awaited 3 follow up. That album, which took shape in 2016, was nearly shattered with the news of Keith Emerson tragic death. Ultimately and as a tribute to the friendship of Emerson and Berry, it somewhat painfully got back on track and is set for a summer of 2018 release date as 3.2 – The Rules Have Changed on Frontiers Music SRL. Doug Lubahn, bassist for the band Clear Light, also played bass for the Doors on three of their albums, Strange Days, Waiting For The Sun, and Soft Parade. On stage, the Doors didn't use a bassist. Keyboard wizard Ray Manzarek would provide the bass line using the lower register of his Vox Continental organ. In the studio however, the Doors relied on several session bassists. Doug was one of them. In fact, Doug was once offered a permanent position as the Doors' bassist. In this interview, we talk with Doug about his early days in the music business, his first major-league band, Clear Light, that band's glimpse of fame as they played a cameo role in the motion picture, The President's Analyst, and his day-to-day experiences working with the Doors, including his relationship with Jim Morrisson.
