Rusty Young, co-founder and only consistent member of the band Poco during their career (1968-2021), passed away on April 14, 2021.  His career was launched when he was tapped to play steel guitar for Buffalo Springfield.  Shortly thereafter, he formed Poco with several of Buffalo Springfield's band members.  Rusty was a talented multi-instrumentalist and an excellent vocalist.  Poco had eighteen albums land on the charts with their Legend and Legacy albums going "Gold."  Their last studio album was All Fired Up and in 2017, Rusty released his only solo album, during his illustrious career, titled Waiting For The Sun.  He was inducted into the Steel Guitar Hall of Fame in in 2013.  Multi-award winning program director Ray White had numerous opportunities during the past 12 years to catch up with Rusty.  We feature highlights of our favorite time spent with him, in December of 2009, when Rusty shares his insights into the formation of Poco, the reunion album "Legacy," a future goal, and thoughts on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  Rusty was a special friend of ours at Classic Artists Today who will be missed dearly  We hope you will enjoy our tribute and listen to our last interview with Rusty on Episode 031, too.

In my particular sector upon Mother Earth, the days are getting shorter and colder, and seeing the sun in the morning is a ceremony that seems lost. Even with sleep being a hobby of mine, I nonetheless cherish that small bit of time that I get to spend watching the sun birth from the edge of the world. It takes longer and longer, and I often wonder if I will indeed spend the entire season in the shadows while anticipating a daily thaw from that voyaging star of illumination.----more---- Winter in my sector of our spinning globe is getting shorter, and my good friend the Sun has been taking this opportunity to hibernate and prepare us for an awakening. My moments within this solar tide are limited. What time that I do have basking in the golden rays become a ceremonious event. While I love my sleep (oh, how I do!), these sacred bites of time with the Sun illuminate the dismal fog that can from time to time pollute the mind with lethargic motion, breaking away the layer of smog that dampen creative flow and an ocean of solace and joy.  This tapestry was amalgamated using the freshest ingredients with only organic means of production and distribution. I share a short personal vignette about my own story and discuss the importance of reaching out for help when you are struggling. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I want to normalize struggling with your mental health during this pandemic, and I want to highlight the importance of not struggling alone. This episode is almost like a meditation on that.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I'll be honest, I don't like shiny optimism and positivity very much. Because it is often invalidating to what we are feeling. Poco formed in 1968, are a pioneer in country rock music being at the forefront of that genre of music every since.  Throughout the years original members of the band have gone on to play with other iconic bands:  the Eagles, Loggins & Messina and Souther-Hillman-Furay.  Throughout their 50 year history co-founder Rusty Young still remains the patriarch of the band today.  In this episode, he talks with award-winning program director Ray White, about Poco's last studio album, All Fired Up and much more!  Since our interview, Rusty has released his first solo album ever, titled Waiting For The Sun.  In our Showcase Segment, we feature Michael McDonald, who has just released his first new album of original tunes in 17 years - Wide Open.  Michael was in The Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan, earlier in his career.  For more information about our show visit http://www.classicartiststoday.com

Doug Lubahn, bassist for the band Clear Light, also played bass for the Doors on three of their albums, Strange Days, Waiting For The Sun, and Soft Parade. On stage, the Doors didn't use a bassist. Keyboard wizard Ray Manzarek would provide the bass line using the lower register of his Vox Continental organ. In the studio however, the Doors relied on several session bassists. Doug was one of them. In fact, Doug was once offered a permanent position as the Doors' bassist.In this interview, we talk with Doug about his early days in the music business, his first major-league band, Clear Light, that band's glimpse of fame as they played a cameo role in the motion picture, The President's Analyst, and his day-to-day experiences working with the Doors, including his relationship with Jim Morrisson.

On the one hand, it's a positive sign for renewable fans... a small family business making a go of it in solar and wind power. This Long Island family has been installing small-scale solar and wind energy packages in back yards, reducing homeowner’s electricity bills to almost zero. But, on the other hand, it illustrates how renewables' long-term promise are actually a big risk for the small fry. It can take more than a decade for homeowners to recoup their initial costs, red tape can trip companies up before they even start and taxes take a bite out of the annual bottom line. With all these hurdles, can they afford to wait for the sun to pay off?
