WARNING: EXTREMELY SENSITIVE CONTENT Ken Stringfellow was a founding member of the Posies, who enjoyed a long career as one of the best power pop bands of the 90s and beyond. He also held down recurring gigs with REM, Big Star, Giant Sand and many others as well as a solo career. In 2021 this was all upended when three women accused him of sexual assault. Since then almost all of his musical partners have distanced themselves from him and he's had to (almost) start over from scratch. This year he released his first album since his world imploded called Circuit Breaker which is about as primal a creative response to this as you'll ever hear. Ken joins us this week to tell his side of the story. It's a tricky subject that we chose to approach journalistically and neutrally. We apologize in advance if anyone is triggered by this conversation as that was not our intention. www.patreon.com/c/thehustlepod www.rainn.org/resources www.kenstringfellow.com

Candlebox had a seemingly immediate success with their self-titled debut album in July 1993. The group had formed in November of 1990, with lead singer Kevin Martin, guitarist Peter Klett, bassist Bardi Martin, and drummer Scott Mercado as the founding members. They performed in clubs around Seattle, a musical mecca at the time that benefitted from the grunge movement, and released an EP that got the attention of the new Maverick Records. Maverick would sign Candlebox, and the group would be the studio's successful act. While grunge was still king in Seattle and on the air waves at the time, Candlebox does not neatly fit into that category. Some of the band's work has a grunge feel, but it tends towards a more mainstream hard rock sound in general. The debut album Candlebox would peak at number 7 on the Billboard album charts, and would see a number of singles hit both the radio and video charts. The strength of their songs would land them as openers for Rush and Metallica, and they would be headlining their own tours by the end of 1994.Despite the rapid success, the popularity of Candlebox was a slower burn at the time. The album did not enter the top 10 of the Billboard 200 chart until August of 1994, and initial reviews were mixed. However, the album would remain on the chart for 104 weeks, and would be certified 4x platinum in the United States.Candlebox would release three albums with Maverick Records before running into disputes, and they disbanded in 2000. A revised lineup would reappear in 2006, and a new album would be released in 2007. As of this podcast Candlebox has released seven albums and is still performing today.Rob brings us this debut album for this week's podcast. YouThe second single was inspired by the time that lead singer Kevin Martin gave up drug dependency. He had seen Midnight Oil in concert and dedicated himself to becoming a rock singer. The single peaked at number 78 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 6 on the Billboard Album Rock Tracks charts. The song in 6/8 time alternates between a heavy rock feel on the chorus and a softer portion in the verses.Don't YouThis song leads off the album, and is a deeper cut that was not released as a single. It really rocks from the start. “And I could break your heart down as I tell you that you've burned out. Don't you? You want to let it go, yeah - you want to let it go, yeah.”RainAnother deeper cut with a very bluesy feel at the start that continues for several minutes before picking up the pace. The lyrics are about a woman leaving the singer, and the regret the singer feels at the loss. About three minutes in, it changes to a more rocking jazz section with a staccato scat meter in the lyrics.Far BehindThe third single would be the big hit from the album. Their most commercially successful song went to number 18 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 4 on the Album Rock chart. It was written as a tribute to Andrew Wood, a singer from the Seattle group Mother Love Bone, who died of a heroin overdose in 1990. The lyrics are written from the perspective of the drug that killed him. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Saturday Night by Ned's Atomic Dustbin (from the motion picture “So I Married an Axe Murderer”) The Mike Myers dark comedy featured this cover of the Bay City Rollers' song on its soundtrack. STAFF PICKS:Long Day In the Universe by Darling Buds Wayne opens up the staff picks with a deeper cut, and one that also appeared on the soundtrack to “So I Married an Axe Murderer.” The Darling Buds are from South Wales, forming in 1986 and disbanding in 1993. Andrew Lewis, the lead singer, tells about a woman that misses her man so much she can't wait for him to come home. Dream All Day by The Posies Bruce's staff pick is another Seattle band. This song hit number 4 on the Modern Rocks Chart and number 17 on the Mainstream Rocks chart. Band members and songwriters Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow wrote this about dreaming of accomplishing things that the singer either can't or won't achieve. Have I Told You Lately by Rod Stewart Rock legend Rod Stewart begins his crooner phase with this cover of the Van Morrison classic from 1989. Lynch brings this staff pick which hit number 5 on the US and UK charts. Morrison originally wrote these lyrics inspired by spirituality and religious conviction. Zooropa by U2Rob reminds us just how big U2 was at the time with his staff pick. The “Zoo TV Tour” was a huge production, highlighting the commercialism of the time. “Be a winner, eat to get slimmer.” This song takes the form of a suite of three movements. The album of the same name was produced by Brian Eno. COMEDY TRACK:Achy Breaky Song by “Weird” Al Yankovic We close out today's podcast with Weird Al's parody of the Billy Ray Cyrus country hit which was constantly played at the time.

On this episode, host Rich Tupica chats with Ken Stringfellow, co-founder of one of the most critically acclaimed power-pop bands of the '90s-2000s, the Posies. Alongside his bandmate Jon Auer, the pair have released a stack of brilliant albums together, some of which were recently re-issued by Omnivore Recordings. Beyond that, he's also spent time playing with R.E.M., Big Star, and dozens of other outfits. Here, (from his home in France) Stringfellow talks about his life as a touring musician, the upcoming Posies record, and what it was like gigging with the likes of Peter Buck and Alex Chilton. Listen on to hear some amazing memories that span the globe, including that one time he jammed with Neil Young. (Photo by White Light Photography)

What do you do when you get the opportunity to meet one of your idols? Ken Stringfellow has been recording music for over 35 years and he isn’t slowing down any time soon. As the co-founder and half of songwriting duo for the influential rock band The Posies, Ken Stringfellow IS a rock n roll legend. In addition, Ken has released several highly acclaimed solo albums, has appeared on 2 studio and 2 live albums as a recording and touring member of R.E.M., and along with band-mate Jon Auer, was an integral part of the resurrection of Big Star, recording a studio and live album. So as one would imagine, the idea of meeting Ken seemed a bit surreal, but when that day actually arrived we realized we were all kindred spirits.

We're back with a new series and a (very slightly) different episode format. Our main guest here is the musician Ken Stringfellow. A few hours before the kickoff of the Posies’ 30th anniversary show at the Bowery Ballroom, Jon Auer is feeling reflective. It’s the perfect moment for the musician to examine a long and fruitful career that’s found him performing as the member of a half-dozen bands, producing countless records and spending 17 years playing guitar for the final iteration of the legendary group, Big Star. But The Posies have always been the nearest and dearest to Auer’s heart. Formed in high school with childhood friend Ken Stringfellow, the band helped define power pop for the 90s. A trio of iconic records released on DGC set the group apart from the grunge sound of their hometown. But they never achieved the popular success of other Seattle groups of the era, The Posies have long remained one of the decade’s most beloved bands. In our conversation, Auer happily reflects on the ups and downs of his long career and explains why The Posies are sticking around for good this time out.
Dropping in for episode 275 is Musician, singer, songwriter, and producer the legendary Ken Stringfellow! Things talked about in this episode were having downtime, pursuing music, Bands that rocked our world, the inside perspective, writing music, unreleased material and up and coming projects.
On this episode, Ken and I discuss songwriting, hero worship, hypnotism, and, well....rigor mortis. MUSIC on this episode: David Bowie, Squeeze, Husker Du, and more!

Bill and Brian are joined by musician Tom Losito () to discuss the Posies' Frosting on the Beater (1993, DGC). Tom tells the gents about discovering the band via a LastFM deep dive. Then Bill, Brian, and Tom discuss what "power pop" means to Tom, the Posies' lack of a signature sound and evolution through the years, Jon Auer's cool guitar tones, Ken Stringfellow's pop sensibility, the band's signature harmonies, Mike Musburger's killer drums, and more as we make our way through the album track by track! This week's sponsor is the very lovely . Check'em out!

Every Sing Episode #5, a conversation with Ken Stringfellow Ken Stringfellow is a singer, songwriter, instrumentalist, arranger, and producer. He his famous for the band he started with his good friend, Jon Auer, The Posies. He has also toured with R.E.M., and the re-formed Big Star. Ken has been involved with more than 200 albums. I got to catch up with Ken in Washington state. He spent many of his growing up years in Bellingham, WA and returns to the Seattle area frequently to give concerts on his old home turf. But, Ken spends most of his time performing and being with his family in Europe. He is truly a musician of the world, as you’ll hear in this conversation. Ken says that his path through the music enterprise is building relationships with his audience, other musicians, and people in the music business. He thinks of himself as making music and making connections. This humanizes it and gives it scale for him. He considers this his path to sanity, and avoids thinking of it as a business or the music industry. Despite the size of the venues or projects, it still comes down to personal relationships. The thing Ken likes the most are performances that are the simplest and the most pure. He likes shows that are small and special. He loves the intense energy that can happen when he is walking around with his guitar but no mic among the audience. Ken says music production is great because it brings new people to his life. Growth and vulnerability are constants throughout Ken's career. He enjoys putting himself into situations where he doesn't now exactly what he's getting into. Ken considers himself a singer first and foremost. In the music he looks for places to put out intense blasts from a deep place to have an impact on the audience. He says, "You get in to people's emotions by catching them off-guard." Ken's upcoming project is a tour with Mercury Rev, called Tears of Silver. Andrew Curry returned to The Time Machine this week to debut two more songs from the upcoming album project "Here Comes The Reign Again: The Second British Invasion". Andrew shared Ken Stringfellow's arrangement of The Blow Monkey's "Digging Your Scene" and the Madness classic "Our House" performed by The Corner Laughers. Both songs made their world broadcast debut this past week and it was a perfect opportunity to have singer-songwriter and producer Ken Stringfellow (The Posies, Big Star and R.E.M.) on the broadcast to discuss his participation with the forthcoming release along with singer-songwriter Karla Kane talking about her bands The Corner Laughers and Agony Aunts. This week also saw the release of Fernando Perdomo's latest song "Girl With A Record Collection" off of his upcoming album "Warm" along with a music video of the single to coincide with National Record Store Day. Fernando returned to The Time Machine for a conversation about record stores and the women who love their record collections. De allí son Lloyd Cole, The Delgados, Camera Obscura, Franz Ferdinand, Orange Juice, The Rezillos, Belle & Sebastian, Snow Patrol, Travis o Bobby Gillespie. Nice Man & The Bad Boys – “Forever Is A Long Time Without”: Francis McDonald es Nice Man. Nirvana – “Come as you are”: Poco queda que decir de este grupo. 14.
