Established in 2018, Suffragette City is a not-for-profit Manchester-based club night held annually to mark International Women's Day. They raise funds for local grassroots charities supporting women and gender expansive people while creating events for all genders that are full of positivity, solidarity and mischief. This May 10th, they're bringing their friendly Manchester vibes to London for an afternoon of excellent music and community at our friends The Social, 5 Little Portland Street where Suffragette City residents Kath McDermott (Flesh at The Haçienda/Homo Electric), Ghost Assembly (Abigail Ward), and Ladybeige (The Social Service) are joined by Sounds of the Universe's Vandorta. Lancashire-born. Acid-damaged. 909-obsessed. Abigail Ward aka Ghost Assembly, runs a one-woman op from the dark end of the dancefloor. Raw machine funk, dipped in dub, NY garage, post-punk and the snare fills of Stock, Aitken & Waterman. Hey fabulous rock-n-roll lovers! In this sizzling episode we dive into the exhilarating world of Zebra with the iconic Randy Jackson. Randy shares a hilarious and somewhat frustrating band practice mishap where one bandmate insisted on playing "Aqualung" during "Suffragette City," even flaunting a Jack-o'-lantern grin with his loose tooth cap. Through trials and tribulations, including an impromptu sorority gig that defined their band name as "Zebra," Randy's narratives gleam with humor and resilience. The band experienced growing pains and successes, from hopping the New Orleans scene to making waves in New York, eventually charming Atlantic Records with their distinct sound and rocking hit "Who's Behind the Door?" Join us as Randy delves into the magic of songwriting, the influence of greats like The Beatles and Bob Dylan, and the rock-n-roll hustle that's kept Zebra touring for decades. With anecdotes about almost touring with Jefferson Airplane and the comical confusion with the other famous Randy Jackson, this episode is a treasure trove for music aficionados. Plus, there's exciting news about Zebra's upcoming album, the first since 2001. So, grab your PJs and gather 'round as we celebrate the legacy of rock with tales that will make your heart sing and your feet tap. Metalheads should always remember that heavy metal was (partly) derived from rock'n'roll music. Heavy rock'n'roll provides the same visceral joys as our fave musical form, so, here, The Mighty Decibel shines the light on some of the best in heavy rock'n'roll from the 70s and 80s. Rip it up!!! Héctor Gerónimo nos presta ‘The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars' de David Bowie. Journalist Nancy Richards chats with author Katherine J. Chen about her latest book, Joan: A Novel of Joan of Arc. About The Book: Girl. Warrior. Heretic. Saint? France is mired in a losing war against England. Its people are starving. Its king is in hiding. Yet out of the chaos, an unlikely heroine emerges. Reckless, steel-willed and brilliant, Joan has survived a childhood steeped in both joy and violence to claim an extraordinary - and fragile - position at the head of the French army. The battlefield and the royal court are full of dangers and Joan finds herself under suspicion from all sides - as well as under threat from her own ambition. With unforgettably vivid characters and propulsive storytelling, Joan is a thrilling epic, a triumph of historical fiction, and a feminist celebration of one remarkable - and remarkably real - woman who left an indelible mark on history. About Katherine: Katherine J. Chen is the author of the novel Mary B. Her work has been published in The New York Times, the Los Angeles Review of Books, Literary Hub, and the historical fiction anthology Stories from Suffragette City. She received her MFA from Boston University, where she was a senior teaching fellow and awarded the Florence Engel Randall Fiction Prize. About Nancy: Nancy Richards is an independent journalist with a good few years experience on radio and in print. As a radio presenter, areas of specialisation included shows on literature, the environment and ‘women's issues'. In print she's covered environment matters, books and literature, lifestyle, travel and décor amongst other things. She has a podcast called Books Stories People and is founder of an NPO: Woman Zone and The Women's Library at the Artscape Theatre Centre in Cape Town. She also oversees Woman Zone's podcast series covering books by women writers and other stories. She's authored/co-authored Beautiful Homes: as featured in Fairlady magazine; Woman Today – 50 years of South African women on radio and Being a Woman in Cape Town: Telling your story. She is a speaker, media trainer and board member of NPO Soil for Life. Born in London, she is based in Cape Town

Alice Cooper - a story of intrigue, drugs and great stage shows. While influencing The Sex Pistols, Kiss, Bowie, the movie, “A Clockwork Orange” and Australia's Jimmy and the Boys, Alice Cooper changed from a band to an individual, and left an enormous legacy in today's rock world. This week's “Before You Die” album is Marc Bolan's “Electric Warrior”, which didn't impress the boys at all, despite Bolan's reputation, some great singles and production by Tony Visconti. David Bowie, according to U2's Bono, was “like a creature falling from the sky.” America may have put a man on the moon, but “we had our own British guy from space.” Bono is referring to when, in 1972, Bowie performed “Starman” on “Top of the Pops,” a seminal moment for young, inspired musicians everywhere. “Starman” was a single on Bowie's sci-fi/apocalyptic/androgynous concept album, “The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars” and the album propelled Bowie into the stratosphere as one of the clear giants of music. (Even if the album didn't set the record sales world by storm.) “Ziggy Stardust” was groundbreaking, gender-bending, genre-shaking, and simply unworldly for its time. The guitar riff from the title track is as well-known a riff as you will ever hear, “Suffragette City” is a rocker worthy of Bowie best-of collections, and the other tracks help inch along a captivating narrative of kaleidoscopic proportions. But it was “Starman” that changed everything. As Bowie sings, “There's a starman waiting in the sky / He'd like to come and meet us / But he thinks he'd blow our minds.” Bowie was the Starman, and he did, indeed, blow our minds.
We hear an awesome master recording of David Bowie in Cleveland on Nov. 25, 1972 supporting Ziggy Stardust. Mick Ronson and band are in great form and the sound is amazing. A great one. I play Ziggy, Life on Mars & Suffragette City. Not to be missed.

I’m Danny Lane, the curator of The Music Museum. This exhibit is called Vietnam War: The Music. Our mission here at the Music Museum is to support all Vietnam Veterans and those who serve the United States, then and now. We thank you for your service. Early-on, in Vietnam, soldiers turned to music as a lifeline to the home front they promised to defend. Rock & roll (R&R) really became rest & relaxation (R&R) for the troops. It was this music that got you through another day, another day closer to going home. During the late 60s and early 70s, “Psychedelic Music” was a big part of a soldier’s down time that centered within the hooches of Vietnam. There are events you don’t want to remember, and then there are songs you REALLY remember. Many of these songs will have a special meaning for you. A place, a brother, a time gone by. This program is for you, the Vietnam Vets, who will never forget. Our goal with Vietnam War: The Music is to honor the fallen and the survivors with the music that got them through “just one more day”. Our shows are broadcast around the world. Cora was born in 1928 to Sherm and Ma. She worked in a mill until she married Harry Edwards Sr. of Cherry Croft Dairy Farm and the birth of their first son, Harry Jr. in 1949. Cora was one of the most compassionate people you could ever meet, treating everyone she met like family. She loved to sew and crochet and none of her family were without warm handmade mittens, hats, and scarves for those cold New England winters. During her younger years, she loved traveling outside of tiny Rhode Island to places like Alaska or Bermuda on a cruise ship with her girlfriends. Cora is survived by her best friend Beverly Almeida, her son, her grandchildren, her great-grandchildren and many cousins, nieces, and nephews, and of course all the children that were hers in all but name. Funeral service will be held for family only. There will be a celebration of life later this summer when all lives touched by Cora will be able to gather together and reminisce about the great woman that she was. Thank you for taking a moment today to remember and celebrate Cora's life. That's it for today, we'll be back next time with more! Also, remember to check out our sponsor Perennial, Daily Gut & Brain, available at the CVS on Main St. in Wakefield! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week we talk our adventures in the first of the 2021 sun, the beauty of historical photography and writing re the queer community and we look forward to a couple of great queer virtual events. We've been through a bunch of great books and recommend the following: The chaotic and nostalgic 'Boy Parts' by Eliza Clarke; the undeniably powerful 'Hunger' by Roxane Gay; being complicit during the height of the AIDS crisis in 'People in Trouble' by Sarah Schulman and queer cowboys in 'Outlawed' by Anna North. Olivia gives a glowing review of 'I Care A Lot', starring the stunning Rosamund Pike, and reads from a great article about Celine Dion's influence in Nigeria, read it here: https://www.vice.com/en/article/epd8v4/celine-dion-cross-generation-nigeria. Oh and there's a sneaky special segment sliced in for your aural pleasure all about how we deal with bad drivers when we're out on the road. Don't want to swear in the car anymore? Tracks incluidos:“Ziggy Stardust”, David Bowie“Cygnus X-1 - Book Two: Hemispheres”, Rush“Seven seas of Rhye”, Queen“Walk on the wild side”, Lou Reed“Something in the way she moves”, James Taylor“Your Song”, Elton John“The Musical Box”, Genesis“My sweet Lord”, George Harrison“Space Oddity”, David Bowie“Dear Prudence”, The Beatles“Suffragette City”, David Bowie See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

It's time for the Animanicast! Discussing the first episode of the reboot! Joey, Nathan and Kelly continue their discussion and review of the Animaniacs reboot. This time they talk about the segments: "Warners Unbound," "How to Brain Your Dragon" and "Suffragette City." The segments featured in this episode lean more towards timeless themes, but will the hosts of the Animanicast cast their votes of approval or will this episode be cast down to Hades? Listen to find out! Animaniacs News It was a bad news week for the Animaniacs reboot. First there was a controversy involving Johnny Depp and then the Brain gave a number to an adult chat line. The hosts run down the embarrassing news headlines and offer some explanation as to what the writers would be thinking about when it comes to Johnny Depp. Warners Unbound The Warners are playing the part of Greek gods as they try to get back at Odysseus for splashing them with water. The trio can't seem to stop him until an orange cyclops (that looks and sounds like Trump) grabs Odysseus and treats him like a loofah. It's an amusing segment, but Joey thinks that it could have been a lot better if some roles were reversed. How to Brain Your Dragon Pinky and the Brain decide to train a dragon to do their bidding. Unfortunately the dragon is an aspiring actor. Will the Brain be able to successfully take over a kingdom, or will its bad acting get in the way? Suffragette City Dot sings a song about the women's suffrage movement but then quickly starts singing about cartoon suffrage. It's a song that starts off promising and then quickly becomes a cartoon cameo fest. Find out what the hosts of the Animanicast think about this promising song that quickly ended up a disappointment. In our second episode celebrating and discussing Women's Suffrage and the 100th-anniversary of the 19th Amendments, we interview best-selling authors Fiona Davis and MJ Rose, who edited the short story collection Stories from Suffragette City. Their book focuses on one day in the history of women's suffrage in the United States - October 23, 1915 - the day of the suffrage parade in New York City (about 25,000 women marched). Many of the stories include historical figures, such as Ida B. Wells, Alice Paul, and Mabel Ping-Hau Lee, who were also on our recent episode. This book, which is available as of last month, includes short stories by Fiona and MJ, as well as 10 other authors. Fiona and MJ were also gracious enough to share with us their writing processes, and advice for writing students. Welcome to Episode 46 of The Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show. It went on air at midnight Friday morning 29 November 2019. Time flew as it always does when fun was being had. The big news of the week was my interview with Tommy Thayer, lead guitarist for KISS. I was lucky enough to get the chance to interview him on Wednesday night and it was an absolute pleasure to talk to him. I had planned to play the interview on this episode but given that there are only 2 hours I didn't want to lose 15 min of high grade music time with an interview so the interview is now a stand-alone podcast, check it out amongst the other podcasts. Nothing like doing shows at two in the morning, I see I said that Lyzyrd Kyngs spelt their name the same way as Thin Lizzy do, when it was supposed to be the way Lynyrd Skynyrd do. Obviously something to do with the zzzzzzzz's The highlight of the show was definitely Billy Bragg, he doesn't get a lot of air play but man, that aggressive guitar just sets the studio alight, it sounds so raw and pissed-off. Steve Jones, doing a cover of Bowie's Suffragette City, also got the Whatsapp lines buzzing as did the comment about Michael Jackson. HIM made their first appearance on TSORR and UK blues hero Aaron Keylock was also a first timer. Machine Head's Davidian sounded as powerful as ever and certainly reaffirmed my belief that Burn My Eyes is one of the finest Metal albums ever released. All in all a very mixed bag with no obvious weak links in my opinion, see what you think. Artists featured included: Van Halen, Judas Priest, The Donna's, Joe Bonamassa, Lyzyrd Kyngs, Billy Idol, My Chemical Romance, Wolf Mother, Marilyn Manson, Tesla, Steve Jones, Y&T, Volbeat, Whiskey Myers, In Flames, HIM, Chickenfoot, Aaron Keylock, The Gaslight Anthem, Billy Bragg, Machine Head, Me & That Man, The Damned Things, The Wildhearts, Cold Chisel & Burn The Priest

Eee-hee-hee! Scryptkeeper Hobert sits down with Paula Skaggs to talk about a road trip film about feminist icons Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Stanton (or Carry Nation, depending on how exciting you want it to be) traveling the East coast in a horse in buggy. It’s a film that was born as a film, became a sketch, and died in an improv scene. Can Paula and Hobert resurrect the corpse of this love letter to two American icons? And can we make it a rap musical? BRING OUT YER DEAD! Oh btw we are now on Spotify if that floats your boat! Head over there and follow and listen to this ep with your hearts content!
Tracks incluidos:“Ziggy Stardust”, David Bowie“Cygnus X-1 - Book Two: Hemispheres”, Rush“Seven seas of Rhye”, Queen“Walk on the wild side”, Lou Reed“Something in the way she moves”, James Taylor“Your Song”, Elton John“The Musical Box”, Genesis“My sweet Lord”, George Harrison“Space Oddity”, David Bowie“Dear Prudence”, The Beatles“Suffragette City”, David Bowie

One year ago today, rock icon David Bowie died at the age of 69. Bowie was born David Jones in Brixton, South London on January 8, 1947. His mother worked as a waitress and his father worked for a charity. At the age of nine, Bowie's father brought home a collection of American records, including some by artists like Elvis Presley, Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers, the Platters, Fats Domino and Little Richard. It was Little Richard’s “Tutti Frutti” that had a particular impact on the young Bowie’s life. He would later say, “I had heard God.” Elvis Presley’s “Hound Dog” was also influential. “It really impressed me, the power of the music. I started getting records immediately after that.” He also began performing, including dancing to songs by Elvis and Chuck Berry. He began playing a plastic alto saxophone in 1961. A year later he would be seriously injured in a fight with a schoolmate over a girl. Doctors feared Bowie would be left blind in his left eye. He recovered slightly, although he was left with poor depth perception and a permanently dilated pupil. He and the classmate, George Underwood, remained friends. Underwood created artwork for some of Bowie’s early albums. Bowie started playing in a band called the Konrads in 1962 at the age of 15. He moved from band to band and manager to manager over the next several years. His habit of firing managers would prove quite expensive in later years. In 1967, he changed his stage name to David Bowie, in order to avoid confusion with Davy Jones of The Monkees. He took his new last name from American frontiersman Jim Bowie, despite the difference in pronunciation. He also released his self titled debut solo album that year. In 1969, days ahead of the launch of Apollo 11, “Space Oddity” was released, which was his first hit, reaching the Top 5 in the UK. It reached No. 124 in the United States on its first release. It would be rereleased in 1973 and hit No. 15 in America. It was followed by another self-titled album. Also that year he met Angela Barnett, whom he would marry, less than a year later. The marriage would produce a son, film director Duncan Jones. 1970 saw Bowie release the album, “The Man Who Sold the World.” In 1971, he released his landmark album, “Hunky Dory,” which featured the single “Changes” and the song “Life on Mars.” Despite it’s moderate success at the time, “Hunky Dory” has consistently been rated among the greatest albums of all time. In 1972, Bowie created the character of Ziggy Stardust, the definitive rock star, who also acts as a messenger for extra terrestrial beings. This might be his most influential phase, at the peak of the Glam Rock period. The album “The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars,” spawned the hits, “Starman,” “Suffragette City,” “Moonage Daydream,” and the closest thing to a title track the album has, “Ziggy Stardust.” He took the role of Ziggy Stardust so seriously that it began affecting his life off stage, leading him to doubt his sanity. In 1973, Ziggy Stardust “retired” during a show at London’s Hammersmith Odeon. The next year, Bowie moved to the United States where he worked on his next album “Diamond Dogs,” which veered more into soul and funk. Also at this time he fell into a deep cocaine addiction, leading to physical issues, paranoia and other emotional problems. Despite these issues, “Diamond Dogs,” and a live album were successful. In 1975, he released “Young Americans” the sound of which Bowie described as “plastic soul.” The album produced Bowie’s first No. 1 single in the U.S., “Fame,” which was co-written with John Lennon. He was also one of the first white acts to appear on “Soul Train,” where he performed “Fame” and “Golden Years.” His next alter ego, the “Thin White Duke” was introduced on his next album “Station to Station.” The character featured immaculate taste in clothing, but was obviously troubled by the massive amounts of cocaine he was taking. The cocaine use eventually got so bad, Bowie decided to move back to Europe, where he recorded what is known as his Berlin Trilogy: “Low,” “Heroes,” and “Lodger.” In 1981, he worked with Queen to write and record “Under Pressure.” The song was Bowie’s third No. 1 single and Queen’s second, after “Bohemian Rhapsody.” In 1983, Bowie released his best-selling album “Let’s Dance,” which featured the title track, which went to No. 1 in the U.S., along with “China Girl,” and “Modern Love.” In 1986, he appeared as Jareth the Goblin King in Jim Henson’s film, “Labyrinth.” He also wrote five songs for the soundtrack. In 1992, he married Iman, and the couple had a daughter in 2000. Bowie continued releasing music for the rest of his life. His last album, “Blackstar” was released just before his death. Our question, what blues guitarist played the solos on the single “Let’s Dance”? It’s unofficially Houseplant Appreciation Day, National Bittersweet Chocolate Day; and Peculiar People Day. It’s the birthday of singer-songwriter Jim Croce, who was born in 1943; singer Rod Stewart, who is 72; and former heavyweight boxing champion George Foreman, who is 68. This week last year, the top song in the U.S. was “Hello” by Adele. The No. 1 movie was “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” while the novel “Rogue Lawyer” by John Grisham topped the New York Times Bestsellers list. The film Suffragette looks at the campaign 100 years ago to gain women the right to vote. It was made with an all-star largely-female cast and crew. How broad is the appeal of this historical retelling? City On Fire by Garth Risk Hallberg has been hyped by the publishers and lauded by many critics. It's a 944-page novel about New York City in the mid 1970s; does it justify the hoopla? Wolf in Snakeskin Shoes is a modern reworking of Moliere's Tartuffe at London's Tricycle Theatre. Set in a black southern baptist church with a dissembling pastor, do the themes still resonate in the twenty-first century? 'Periodic Tales, The Art of the Elements" is an exhibition at Compton Verney in Warwickshire. It explores the way the elements of the periodic table have inspired and influenced artists over the centuries. Tom Sutcliffe's guests are Rowan Pelling, Geoffrey Durham and Linda Grant. The producer is Oliver Jones.
