Hello friends! Austin based, alt-pop artist Sophia Warren is my guest for episode 1498! Sophia's latest EP, "Adesso", produced by Chris Coady (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, TV On The Radio) is available now on Universal Music Group Mexico wherever you get your jams. Here's the Linktree to connect with all things Sophia. We have a great conversation about Growing up isolated and in and out of hospitals since she was 5 years old due to a rare thyroid condition, how writing and playing music gave comfort and an outlet, writing songs instead of explaining herself, co-founding the Animal Defense Alliance, our shared love of the Omnichord, and much more. I had a great time getting to know Sophia. I'm sure you will too. Let's get down! Follow us on Instagram, TikTok, X, Facebook, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or anywhere you pod. Not having the security blanket, an incognito experience, and sleeping on pool tables. Will Sprott (Shannon & The Clams, Will Sprott) "In August 2022, Shannon Shaw's world was turned inside out. With mere weeks to go until their wedding, the singer's fiancé, Joe Haener, died in a horrific car accident in front of his family's vegetable farm in Oregon. It was a devastating loss that hit Shannon & The Clams with cataclysmic force. Shaw's bandmates, guitarist Cody Blanchard, keyboard player Will Sprott, and drummer Nate Mahan, had also grown close to Haener, a drummer and fixture of the Bay Area music scene. They canceled shows and rallied around Shaw as fans reached out to show their support. Shaw spent her nights with Blanchard and his family or with the Haeners, finding comfort in community. She adopted a fluffy dog named Spanky-Joe. She moved out of the Portland apartment where she and Haener had been living. She fearlessly chronicled the whole experience online. “Losing Joe made me unafraid of so many things,” Shaw says. “I have a lot less fear. It's given me new perspective. Baring my soul is so much less scary than it would've been before.” Amid this overwhelming sense of grief, melodies and lyrics began to flow out of Shaw. Instagram posts about her relationship with Haener became the building blocks of new compositions. Her Clams bandmates were also reeling and writing their own new songs. From the shock and trauma of that tragedy comes Shannon & The Clams' latest album, The Moon Is In The Wrong Place, a powerful exploration of loss, time, love, and resilience that stands as the beloved garage band's most ambitious, emotionally searing recording to date. In preparing to record, The Clams passed demos back and forth for months and, uncharacteristically for them, jammed on unfinished riffs to see what would happen. “Shannon and I usually write separately, and we usually bring pretty crafted, finished songs,” says Blanchard, who developed tennis elbow after their marathon rehearsal sessions. When Shaw struggled to find the right chords to go with her melodies, she obtained an Omnichord — an electronic instrument with a built-in set of chords and rhythms — and unlocked a new creative palette. In 2023, they returned to Nashville to record with longtime collaborator Dan Auerbach at Easy Eye Sound Studios — who oversaw 2018's Onion and 2021's Year Of The Spider — and captured what they'd been creating. The results show the group ascending to new creative highs, while still weaving in the classic garage-rock and girl-group sounds that have long been a hallmark of their work. This time around, they venture to deeper, farther out musical locations than before and bring a new sophistication and intricacy to their arrangements, plus they get an assist from pro wrestling great Mick Foley on handclaps. Meanwhile, Shaw's powerful voice veers between sweetness and snarl — sometimes within the space of a single lyric." Omnichord milestones seem to come once every couple decades. Just look at the space between Eurythmics’ “Love Is a Stranger”, Gorillaz’ “Clint Eastwood”, and Meshell Ndegeocello’s Grammy-winning The Omnichord Real Book from last year. From those big three alone, we think it’s fair to say this kooky little electronic contraption’s not just a novelty. (06:18) Edgar Froese, “PA 701” from Macula Transfer (1976 Brain). The material was composed during different flights during '75 and '76 while on tour with Tangerine Dream. Instruments, Composed By, Produced by, Edgar Froese. I'm not certain, but all of the tracks are named after airline flight numbers. I think this one was on Pan American. Recorded in June 1976 at Amber Studio, Berlin. (07:33) Beaver and Krause, “Gandharva” and “By Your Grace,” from Gandharva (1971 Warner Brothers). The Moog Modular is played by Bernie Krause, the pipe organ by Paul Beaver. Baritone Saxophone, Gerry Mulligan. Recorded at Grace Cathedral, San Francisco, February 10-11, 1971. This recording came at the height of the Moog craze (for which Beaver and Krause were largely responsible) and this music took a decidedly thoughtful turn with its jazz guests and spacious live sound recorded in a church. Having the Moog Modular in a live performance was a challenge and its presence is only apparent in the opening and several moments on this side of the album. But the organ and baritone saxophone alone provide a beautiful sonic experience. (06:29) イノヤマランド = Inoyama Land, “Mizue” from ダンジンダン・ポジドン = Danzindan-Pojidon (1983 Yen). Inoyama Land is Yasushi Yamashita and Makoto Inoue. Roland Jupiter 8, System-100M, MC-4, Makoto Inoue. Recorded at Private Studio, Kichijōgi & Yugawara from Jan '82 to '83. This track was made by Inoue which he described as him “playing with repetitive octave, machine-like signal sounds.” (02:31) Arp, “Nzuku” from Ensemble—Live! (2019 Mexican Summer). Arp is Alexis Georgopoulos, an American electronic musician, composer, and music producer based in New York. Includes music from his LP, Zebra, as well as four original tracks. Zebra saw the diverse, New York-based artist exploring Fourth World, Japanese avant-garde, minimalism, kosmische, dub, cosmic jazz and more. This album was recorded live in the studio. Limited edition of 500 copies. (06:36) Ariel Kalma, “Reternelle” from Ariel Kalma (1975 Astral Muse). A spacey work for dual saxophones and tape echo, played by Kalma. (12:08) Masuko Shinji, “Woven Music for Silver Ocean” from Woven Music (2011 Jagjaguwar). Japanese singer and guitarist. Some soothing guitar electronics bordering on noise. Let your thoughts wander. (13:50) イノヤマランド = Inoyama Land, “Apple Star” from ダンジンダン・ポジドン = Danzindan-Pojidon (1983 Yen). Inoyama Land is Yasushi Yamashita and Makoto Inoue. Roland Jupiter 8, System-100M, MC-4, Makoto Inoue. Recorded at Private Studio, Kichijōgi & Yugawara from Jan '82 to '83. This track by Inoue came about by his “synchronizing the Jupiter 8 auto arpeggio with the System100M analogue sequencer with the sequencer VC (voltage control), which generates a curious phrase automatically.” (05:57) White Gourd, “La Lune” from Hermit / La Lune (2013 Psychic Sounds). “White Gourd is the solo work of Suzanne Stone. In addition to being a visual artist, herbalist, teacher, master gardener, and beekeeper, she is well known for involvement as vocalist & saxophonist in the experimental ensemble Million Brazilians.” This recording illustrates the dreamy nature of Stone's sound material used in her live performances; found objects, gongs, 78 player, piano and audio cassette loops. (18:10) Somei Satoh, “Echoes” from Emerald Tablet / Echoes (2020 WRWTFWW). Echoes taken from Somei Satoh's Echoes, Edition Omega Point (2003). It was composed for the "Mist, Sound, and Light Festival", held on May 20-19, 1981 at Kawaji, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. Composed and performed by Somei Satoh. For this event, Satoh composed music for the 10-day event organized by the hot spring tourist association of Kawaji. The work was played at the Kawaji hot spring's Ojika river valley using 8 gigantic loudspeakers set-up on hills surrounding the stream, with music played through an 8-channel-tape system. The echoes created by the work were accentuated as they reverberated through the outdoor location. (30:27) Less Bells, “Bird in Hand” and “Forest Ghosts” from Solifuge (2018 Kranky). Less Bells is Julie Carpenter. All Songs by, Violin, Cello, Synthesizers, Fender Rhodes Electric Piano, Omnichord, Julie Carpenter; Optigan Electric Organ, Buchla Music Box, Moog Modular Synthesizer, Dain Luscombe; Synthesizer, mixed by, Kenneth James Gibson; Vocals, Leah Harmon. Violinist/composer Julie Carpenter “. . . weaves orchestral and electronic textures to inhabit that boundary between storm and sun.” Can you say happy astral tripping? (08:39) Opening background music: Ariel Kalma and Richard Tinti, “Forest Ballad” from Osmose(1978 SFP). Organ, Flute, Ariel Kalma; sound effects, Richard Tinti. Opening and closing sequences voiced by Anne Benkovitz. Additional opening, closing, and other incidental music by Thom Holmes. See my companion blog that I write for the Bob Moog Foundation. There's nothing like the feeling of an unexpected snow day! And for singer/songwriter Meaghan Smith, it was the inspiration for her song It Snowed. That will be one of the festive tunes you'll hear as part of The Holiday Show over three days at The Stage at St. Andrew's (6036 Coburg Road) in Halifax starting December 1st. Smith has written over 100 songs that have been used for film and television (those include: Jimmy Fallon, American Idol, So You Think You Can Dance, 60 Minutes, The Friends Reunion and more. This upcoming event is a festive fundraiser for Feed NS. This is a conversation about her unique approach to her craft and the career she's built for herself in a rather unconventional way. And if you've never heard of an omnichord, you're not the only one.
The Grammy-winning vocalist, bass player and composer Meshell Ndegeocello will perform at the Palladium in central Indiana on November 18. Meshell is known for her eclectic and expansive sonic palette. She's collaborated with artists ranging from Madonna to the Rolling Stones - and her music incorporates elements of hip-hop, jazz, rock, soul, afrobeat, and more. Meshell's latest album ”The Omnichord Real Book” reflects these diverse influences and brings together a remarkable set of guest collaborators - including the Indianapolis composer and vocalist Hanna Benn.

Declamation day, moving a week after graduating college, and Conveying feelings without words. Lael Neale "It is the simple thing that is so hard to do. This is the paradox that musician Lael Neale has lived within throughout her development as an artist. It is the reason she became enthralled with poetry. Poems are a distillation. Lael says, “this challenge to winnow away what is unessential is the most maddening and, ultimately, rewarding part of writing a song.” Lael's new album Acquainted with Night is a testament to this poetic devotion. Stripped of any extraneous word or sound, the songs are lit by Lael's crystalline voice which lays on a lush bed of Omnichord. The collection touches on themes that have been thread into her work for years: isolation, mortality, yearning, and reaching ever toward the transcendent experience." We had the pleasure of interviewing Matt Vinson of CAAMP and The Wonderfool over Zoom video! The Wonderfool—the recording project of singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Matt Vinson—has announced his fourth full-length studio album, Shiner, will be released Wednesday, August 11 via Gjenny Records. Notably one-third of the chart-topping folk group CAAMP, Vinson was stuck indoors by the pandemic after the band had to cancel their touring plans. Vinson found himself with ample time on his hands and turned that isolation into an opportunity to create something new: a combination of modern folk melodies, forward-thinking production, and lyrics about fighting off one's inner demons. The nine-track Shiner is a soundtrack for early mornings and late nights mixing the organic with the synthesized, the intimate with the collaborative, and folky with the pop-inspired. "The album has a blend of happy, poppy songs that are filled with themes of personal betterment," Vinson explains, "and moody songs with a sonic space that lets the emotion of the song ring true. It's something you can listen to in the morning, before you go to bed, or while sitting in a hammock. It's reflective music. With Shiner, I finally encapsulated that feeling." A 1980s Omnichord adds vintage, sun-baked shimmer to "Cool Shade." A MicroKORG arpeggiator weaves its way in and out of the album's kickoff track, "Much Better." Banjo, baritone guitar, saxophone, and keyboards fill the remaining tracks, lacing Vinson's writing with a mix of atmosphere and ambiance. Shiner Track Listing:“Much Better”“Time (Done Being Late)”“Shake the Dust”“Cool Shade”“Counterweight”“The Man You Knew”“Truth of the Matter”“Young & Able”“The Day Before Your Last” Vinson encapsulated The Wonderfool in 2015 while studying at Ohio University. From there he solely worked alone recording, producing, and writing. However, as Shiner took shape, the record proved to be something quite different, full of guest appearances from fellow road warriors (including CAAMP frontman Taylor Meier) and fueled by Vinson's sharpest songwriting to date. Amsterdam-based Altin Gün plays songs rooted in traditional Turkish folk tunes and Anatolian rock that have fallen down the rabbit hole of psychedelic funk, combining baglama/saz riffs, vocal melodies, fuzzy bass, wah-wah guitars and analogue organs. On their latest, Yol (Road), the band (whose name means “golden day”, sort of like a rent party involving gold pieces) has expanded its retro sound world to include dreamy 80’s synth-pop instruments like Omnichord, and vintage drum machines that ought to be wearing sequins. Altin Gün plays a set for us with their full sound and light set up. - Caryn Havlik Set list: "Ordunun Dereleri", "Yüce Dağ Başında", "Kolbastı", "Sevda Olmasaydı" "Ordunun Dereleri": "Yüce Dağ Başında": "Kolbastı": "Sevda Olmasaydı":

Ross Collier is an Omnichordist as well as an Omnichord aficionado, collector, and reseller. He has been a friend of mine for a while since he came over to buy a banjo off of my old roommate 2 years ago. We immediately resonated and I ended up giving him a synthesizer to go home with as well. Since then he has been an endless beacon of creativity and positivity and I have always been delighted by our run-ins

Peace Coast Podcast hosted x Mars Jupiter @ Out of the Blue Too Art Gallery & More
Nudie Suits, Allie & Ruby, are interviewed by Mars Jptr about their history in music, including going to school to study classical concert music, playing on the latest Future Islands record, singing in a church choir, and their take on Baltimore as a city & creative scene. They also bless us with an impromptu Omnichord and CasioTone improvisation jam. Their debut tape "Summer Fun" is out now on Ehse Records. http://ehserecords.bandcamp.com
Sassy sprite Christian Owens, singer/guitarist of the awesome all-girl band Bad Girlfriend comes on down to share an EPIC tale of the "local benefit show for a dog gone horribly wrong." It's all the minutiae you love and loathe about playing local shows on the Lower East Side and then some, including talk of working for Cyndi Lauper, LL Cool J, and the birth of the Omnichord. There's a pound of mirth on this week's WORST GIG EVER!
Addi Twigg and friend/comic Eric Donaldson discuss why the hell there is a podcast in the first place, give unsolicited advice to people who do stupid things on the internet, and set idiotic idioms to music. Visit www.additwigg.com for more.

As this is episode 101, we indulge our grumpier sides and talk about things that really annoy us in the studio world, but not before we marvel at Matt Mahaffey's amazing rendition of classic AC/DC track Back in Black on drums and Omnichord, then we discuss the recently delayed release of the Linn Drum II and the availability of Dave Smiths new Mopho desktop synthesizer. Then we discover who are panel would like to meet or work with alive or dead - which was one of the topics we didn't get around to last week (no surprise!).
