Playlist Track Time Start Time Opening and Introduction (Thom Holmes) 11:57 00:00 1. Herbie Hancock, Herbie Hancock Demonstrates The Rhodes Piano (1973 Rhodes). A terrific flexi-disc produced by Rhodes and narrated by Hancock who tells an interesting story about his first encounter with the instrument on a Miles Davis session and then he walks the keyboard through a series of effects. He speaks with the authority of a proud electronics tinkerer who understands the nuances that make this instrument so beloved by jazz musicians. This flexi-disc was originally delivered in the November 8, 1973 issue of Down Beat magazine. I provide both sides of the disc, in entirety. Tunes included during the demonstration include parts of Watermelon Man, Maiden Voyage, and The Spook. Soloist, Rhodes Electric Piano, Voice, Herbie Hancock. I thought it would be wisest to lead off this podcast with an overview of the Rhodes even though it is out of chronological sequence, being from 1973. We then go back a few years to hear tracks in proper time order. 12:48 11:57 2. The Don Ellis Orchestra, “Open Beauty” from Electric Bath (1967 Columbia). See the opening tracks from this podcast for a story about this session from Hancock. Bass, Ron Carter; Drums, Tony Williams; Piano, Fender Electric Piano, Herbie Hancock; Tenor Saxophone, Wayne Shorter; Trumpet, Miles Davis. 16:59 30:14 4. Oliver Nelson and Steve Allen, “Go Fly a Kite” from Soulful Brass (1968 Impulse). Another Steve Allen record, whom we heard from in part 1 playing the Wurlitzer Electric Piano. Here is a selection from an album on which he plays the Rock-Si-Chord and occasional piano. Arranged by Oliver Nelson; Rock-Si-Chord, piano, Steve Allen; Drums, Jimmy Gordon; session musicians, Barney Kessel, Bobby Bryant, Larry Bunker, Roger Kellaway, Tom Scott; Produced by Bob Thiele. 2:30 51:24 6. J & K “Mojave” from Betwixt & Between (1969 A&M, CTI). “J” is J.J. Johnson (trombonist) and “K” is Kai Winding (trombonist). Their ensemble included Roger Kellaway playing the electric clavinette. An example of using the clavinet in jazz. This was most likely a Hohner Clavinet Model C which had just been introduced in 1968. Recorded at Van Gelder Studios during late 1968. 2:31 53:54 7. Albert Ayler, “New Generation” from New Grass (1969 Impulse). For his 24th solo album, the long-established jazz pianist Evans took his turn playing both the Fender Rhodes and Steinway acoustic piano on this album, as two-handed duets no less. Liner notes were written by Harold Rhodes, inventor of the Rhodes Electric Piano. 5:42 1:01:24 9. Sun Ra And His Intergalactic Research Arkestra, “Black Forest Myth” from It's After The End Of The World - Live At The Donaueschingen And Berlin Festivals (1971 MPS Records). You can hear Sun Ra enticing other-worldly sounds from a Farfisa organ beginning at about 1:35. Recorded in 1970. Recorded at Ballon Theater, Cairo, Egypt December 17, 1971. Sun Ra playing several electronic keyboards in turn, the organ, Minimoog, and Rock-si-Chord. The great jazz funk flutist Bobbi Humphrey released a series of albums around this time that often-featured fantastic synthesizer players. Here you can pick out the Minimoog by Don Preston and the ARP (Odyssey?) by Larry Mizell. The synths included here are in contrast to the more experimental sounds that Herbie Hancock was issuing at the same time. Flute, Vocals, Bobbi Humphrey; ARP Synthesizer, Larry Mizell; Minimoog, Don Preston; Bass, Chuck Rainey; Congas, King Errison; Drums, Harvey Mason; Electric Piano Fender Rhodes, Fonce Mizell, Larry Mizell; Guitar, John Rowin, Melvin "Wah Wah" Ragin; Percussion, Roger Sainte, Stephany Spruill; Piano, Jerry Peters; Produced by Chuck Davis, Larry Mizell; Trumpet, Fonce Mizell. 6:39 2:06:19 20.Ramsey Lewis, “Jungle Strut” from Sun Goddess (1974 Columbia). RMI Harmonic Synthesizer, Clark Ferguson. 2:43 2:20:24 23. Fernando Gelbard, “Sombrero De Flores” from Didi (1974 Discos Redonde). I created an illustrated chart of all of the instruments included in this podcast, paying special attention to the expressive features that could be easily adopted by jazz musicians. You can view it on my blog, Noise and Notations.

Episode 89 The Theremin Part 2: Recordings After 1970 Playlist Ultimate Spinach, “(Ballad of The) Hip Death Goddess” from Ultimate Spinach (1968 MGM Records). This American psychedelic rock band was from Boston, Massachusetts, although they had a sound that had more an affinity with the free spirit of San Francisco. The Theremin has a prominent part in this song, following the vocalist and filling in some interesting instrumental parts. Bass and Feedback, Richard Nese; Vocals, Drums, Tabla, Bass Drum, Bells, Chimes, Keith Lahteinen; Vocals, Electric Guitar, Guitar, Kazoo, Barbara Hudson; Vocals, Electric Piano, Electric Harpsichord, Organ, Harpsichord, Twelve-String Guitar, Sitar, Harmonica, Wood Flute, Theremin, Celesta, Ian Bruce-Douglas; Vocals, Lead Guitar, Guitar Feedback, Sitar Drone, Electric Sitar, Geoffrey Winthrop. 8:11 Hawkwind, “Paranoia Part 2” from Hawkwind (1970 Liberty). Hawkwind was a pioneering space-rock and psychedelic group from the UK. They were known to use a theremin during their early years—1969 to 1973 and revived its use on stage in later performances using a Moog Etherwave model in the 2000s. This first album features a theremin added to much of the sonic textures, sometimes overtly but often run through effects to provide a looming background, as in this song. It is sometimes difficult to distinguish, but I think there is a theremin providing some of the droning background and then sporadic bursts of tones beginning around 4:25. 14:54 McKendree Spring, “God Bless the Conspiracy” from 3 (1972 Decca). Electric Violin, Viola, Theremin, Michael Dreyfuss; Electronics (Ring Modulator), Tom Oberheim; Vocals, Acoustic Guitar, Dulcimer, Fran McKendree; Electric Bass, Larry Tucker; Electric Guitar, Martin Slutsky. This progressive band with experimental leanings was a quartet without a drummer. Dreyfus later said, “In God Bless the Conspiracy and No Regrets I was able to play viola and Theremin at the same time by bringing my body closer to the Theremin (to change pitch) while playing a harmony part on the viola,”(2006). He played a Theremin beginning 1969. He may have used a Moog theremin, such as the Troubadour. 6:53 Linda Cohen, “Horizon Jane” from Lake Of Light (1973 Poppy). Folky album from Philadelphia featuring several electronic musicians. Acoustic Guitar, Bass, Piano, Polytonic Modulator, Jefferson Cain; Classical Guitar, Composer, Linda Cohen; Flute, Stan Slotter; Producer, Electric Guitar, Matrix Electronic Drums, Modulator, Sitar, Synthesizer, Craig Anderton; Minimoog, Theremin, Charles Cohen. 3:36 Ronnie Montrose, “Space Station #5” from Montrose (1973 Warner Brothers). Ronnie Montrose added a custom-built Theremin to his equipment with the pitch antenna mounted on his aluminum (silver) Velano guitar so that he could play both at the same time. Volume for the theremin was controlled by a black box mounted on a mike stand, to which he stood nearby. He was recording with it throughout the 1970s. Here is a great live clip you where you can see how he played it. Note the end of the clip where he put the theremin guitar up against the speaker and wails on the volume control of the theremin control box. Bass, Bill Church; Drums, Denny Carmassi; Guitar, Theremin-Guitar, Ronnie Montrose; Vocals, Sam Hagar. 5:36 Arthur Brown's Kingdom Come, “Time Captives” from Journey (1974 Passport). Fender Bass, Percussion, Vocals, Phil Shutt; Bentley Rhythm Ace, Vocals, Arthur Brown; Electric Guitar, Vocals, Andy Dalby; Mellotron, ARP 2600, EMS VCS 3, Piano, Theremin, Percussion, Vocals, Victor Peraino. 8:37 Michael Quatro, “Get Away” from In Collaboration with The Gods (1975 United Artists Records). Brother of Detroit rockers Suzi and Patti Quatro, he had a flare for progressive rock and electronic keyboards in the 1970s. The Theremin makes frequent appearances on this album, this track in particular. Arranger, Piano Baldwin, Electric Piano Gretsch Electro, Piano Tack Piano, Sonic Six Synthesizer, Effects Univox Phaser, Univox Stringman, EC-80 Echo, Elka Electric Piano, Hammond Organ, Minimoog Synthesizer, Univox Mini-Korg, Electroharmonix Boxes, Mellotron Violin, Cello, Flute, Effects Wah-Wah Pedals, Effects Syntha-Pedal, Bass Nova Bass, Horns, Organ Pipe Organ, Sounds Ring Modulation, Maestro Theremin, Electronic Effects, Percussion , Michael Quatro;Bass, Lead Vocals, Arranged By Arranging Assistance, Dave Kiswiney; Drums, Kirk (Arthur) Trachsel; Guitar, Teddy Hale. 4:04 Melodic Energy Commission, “Revise The Scene” from Stranger In Mystery (1979 Energy Discs). This is the first album from this Canadian space-rock, psychedelic and folk troupe from British Columbia. The Theremin was a key instrument in their ensemble and was custom-built by group member George McDonald. His Theremin would eventually be known as the Galactic Stream Theremin and would take some 25 years to build and evolve into a six antennae instrument for “tuning into the performers body motions.” During this recording, a simpler, more traditional version was used. Gas & Steam Bass, Bells, Tambourine, Mark Franklin; Dulcimer, Bowed Dulcimer, Khaen, Gongs, Flute, Randy Raine-Reusch; Hydro-electric Guitar, Custom-made Theremin, Aura, Wall Of Oscillation, George McDonald; Percussion, Tablas, Brass Tank, Glockenspiel, Roland SH5 Synthesizer, Organ, Paul Franklin; EMS Synthi AKS, Delatronics, Electric Guitar, Del Dettmar; Wordy Voice, Guitar, Piano, Organ, Roland SH 1000 Synthesizer, Gongs, Vibraphone, Kalimba, Stone Drum, Egyptian Shepherd's Pipe, Xaliman. 6:13 The Nihilist Spasm Band, “Elsinore” from Vol. 2 (1979 Music gallery Editions). TVox Tour model theremin, Lydia Kavina; mixed and spatialized, Steve Puntolillo. This work was originally written for theremin although Grainger had many ideas around how this type of “free music” should be played. This native Australian was fascinated by the sounds of the real world and invented a mechanical machine for making such sounds. In 1938, Grainger said, "...Out in nature we hear all kinds of lovely and touching 'free' (non-harmonic) combinations of tones, yet we are unable to take up these beauties and expressiveness into the art of music because of our archaic notions of harmony.” His adaptation of free music for theremin was an attempt to create sounds that were new to music. This version was multitracked by Kavina and an old acquaintance of mine, sound engineer Steve Puntolillo, to recreate the parts for four theremins. 1:19 The Kurstins, “Sunshine” from Gymnopedie (2000 Rouge Records). Composer, Herb Deutsch; Piano, Nancy Deutsch; Moog Melodia Theremin, Daryl Kubian. Recording from 2012. The beloved Herb Deutsch, who died recently at age 90, was an early collaborator with Bob Moog on the creation of the synthesizer. Herb became acquainted with Bob by purchasing a Theremin kit—a Moog Melodia model, in the early 1960s. He was primarily responsible for convincing Moog to add a keyboard to his modular unit. Also, this is taken from a terrific compilation of modern Theremin artists to benefit the New York Theremin Society. Check it out. 3:38 M83, “Sitting” from M83 (2016 Lowlands Festival). This is a live recording from Holland. “Sitting” was a song on M83's first album in 2001. But it didn't have a theremin part until they decided to spice-up the live interpretation of the song in 2016. Jordan Lawlor uses a Moog Theremini when M83 performs this in concert. He puts down his guitar, grabs some drum sticks, beats a rhythm on some electronic drums while dancing in place and moving his hands around a theremin. You can hear the theremin in this track but don't mistake it for the keyboard tones that Gonzalez is playing on his modular system. A longer sequence of theremin begins at 1:38 in the audio. You can view the video here, beginning at 26:54 into the show. M83 is a French electronica band founded in 1999 by Anthony Gonzalez, who remains the only sole member from the original outfit. Performing members on this live tour included: Anthony Gonzalez, lead vocals, modular synthesizers, keyboards, guitars, piano, bass, drums, percussion, programming, arrangement, mixer, production; Loïc Maurin, drums, percussion, guitar, bass, keyboards; Jordan Lawlor, guitars, vocals, multi-instrumentalist; Kaela Sinclair, Dave Smith and M-Audio keyboards, vocals; Joe Berry, piano, synthesizers, electronic wind instrument, saxophone. 4:03 Radio Science Orchestra, “Theme from Doctor Who” (2019). This UK-based band unites theremin, ondes martenot, Moog and modular electronics, for its performances. They've played such events as the TEDSummit, the British Library, and Glastonbury Festival. They made a concert recording with Lydia Kavina in 2009 of the Theme from Doctor Who. This version was made more recently and appears to also include Kavina. She plays the TVox Tour model theremin made by her husband G. Pavlov. 2:18 Thorwald Jørgensen, Kamilla Bystrova, “Moderato” from Air électrique: Original Music For Theremin And Piano (2020 Zefir). Jørgensen is an accomplished Dutch classical theremin player. Piano, Kamilla Bystrova; Liner Notes, Design, Moog Etherwave Pro Theremin, Thorwald Jørgensen. 2:10 Dorit Chrysler, “A Happy Place” from Theremin One Hundred Years (2020 Electronic Sound). Issued with the magazine's 7” vinyl and magazine bundle Electronic Sound Magazine, issue 70. Written, produced, and performed by Dorit Chrysler. 2:06 Dorit Chrysler, “Calder Plays Theremin Side A” from Calder Plays Theremin (2023 NY Theremin Society/Fridman Gallery) Written for Theremin Orchestra in 5 Movements, Chrysler's work is based on a commissioned sound piece by The Museum of Modern Art in conjunction with the exhibition Alexander Calder: Modern from the Start. Chrysler identified two of Alexander Calder's sculptures, Snow Flurry, I (1948) and Man-Eater with Pennants (1945), to interact and “play” multiple Theremins on site. I believe the Theremin are various Moog models. Calder Plays Theremin is a co-release of the NY Theremin Society and Fridman Gallery. 8:48 Opening background tracks: Ronnie Montrose, “Open Fire” (excerpt) from Open Fire (1978 Warner Brothers). Bass, Alan Fitzgerald; Drums, Rick Shlosser; Guitar, Custom-built Theremin mpounted to his electric guitar, Ronnie Montrose; composed by Edgar Winter, Ronnie Montrose. 2:09 Hooverphonic, “L'Odeur Animale” from The Magnificent Tree (2000 Columbia). "“There exist other kinds of thinking selves beyond the human”. - Eduardo Kohn "One of the instrumental figures in bringing the music of the drone to the West is the Sufi musician Hazrat Inayat Kahn. His musical treatise from the early 20th century, simply titled Music, is an incredible sonic-spiritual composition on the potentials and possibilities of music as law, as cosmology, as harmony. “Music is behind the whole working of the universe”, the Sufi Master wrote, “We live and move and have our being in music”. "In contemplating natures music, in finding ears to hear it, a body to feel and dance it, a mind to celebrate and (re)think it, and -all together- a spirit to create it, I fatefully encountered this incredible ‘unidentified sound #1' from AWI's PALAOA observatory in Antarctica. This strange, long, low frequency drone from somewhere in the Antarctic Ocean has an unknown origin. Is it from a creature? From water? From some geological feature? A nearby machine or ship? All that is known about the origin of this sound is that no ship was within a thousand km radius when it was recorded. What we can say for certain is that it is a subaquatic sounding of Earth, of universe, captured expertly and offered for us here to resonate with, to find resonance in the unknown of the sonosphere. "When I first heard the recording, I immediately felt that it was already so beautifully strange that it required only very little to elicit its charms. I only wanted to amplify its qualities, saturate its mysteries. Considering it as a vocalization of Earth I simply play along with it, in amity and community. To get there, I put myself into a trance through a listening meditation and recognize the sounder. I reflect the sound multiply into the eternal of drone. I play back to the sounder an image of itself that is also me. This track operates as an attentional strategy for rediscovering ourselves in the more- than-human world. "Water, amongst other things, is a specifically acoustic environment. Sound travels faster than light in water, and whale song is thought to produce holographic ‘images' within the mind of the ancient creatures as they communicate with one another across vast distances. Creatures both aquatic and terrestrial use sound as a form of sight: sonar. If we consider this ‘sonic sight' in an expanded sense, then when I deeply listen to this sound, I am, in a sense, recognized by it, or whatever emanates it. In coming to witness one another -over time- we come to recognize each other. In that unspeakable recognition between myself and the sound, I believe we have a camaraderie, we are in, of, and as the thought(s) of the world beyond the human. "If you take a look at the wave/sonogram of this composition, you will see an audio Rorschach figure swimming or flying out of the vibration. This has to do partly with the way the structure of the composition was prepared: first playing the original recording backwards (to get to know it better), and then forwards. In that reflection between the polar edges of the Earth and my Farfisa (an electric organ) I acknowledge and celebrate mystery as mystery. I find solace in what is immeasurable, intangible, uncertain. It is there in the musicality of resonant Earth that the radical plurality and multiplicity of worlds and thought resides and resounds in a relational dynamic that exists beyond experience." An established artist starting a new musical project is always a tricky proposition, and the 90s were no different. Whether releasing a solo album or starting a new band, quality doesn't always matter when it comes to fans accepting a new sound or direction. After the amicable split of Bikini Kill in 1998, Kathleen Hanna returned a year later with the retro-inspired Le Tigre, forgoing punk bombast for dancier sounds rooted in homemade drum loops, Farfisa organs, 60s girl groups, 80s new wave and electroclash. But that doesn't mean politics and social commentary take a back seat, as Hanna is as sharp lyrically as ever on the self-titled debut album while balancing pop melodies with a lo-fi approach. Vince Rogers - Testcard F - in conversation with David Eastaugh Norwich, experimental synth pop band formed in 1981 - formed in the early 1980s at the UEA. Famously had an indie chart hit with Bandwagon Tango. They completed a second EP and also did a Peel Session. Before releasing solo material as alpha seven, Pete used to be in Testcard F, an early experimental synth pop outfit based in Norwich, reaching the dizzy heights of a Peel session in 1982 and two singles on the Backs record label. Instrumentation included electronic percussion built from Maplin kits, augmented with a coat rack and waste bins to give a human feel. There was a borrowed EDP Wasp, 1960s Farfisa organ, Casio VL-Tone and a drum machine that held a single song, hence they used backing cassettes

Conrad Schnitzler, Brian Eno, Michael Rother, Conny Plank. All the cool kids wanted to hang with Moebius and Roedelius — so naturally we do, too. What time is it, listeners? Is it time for the CBK bus to take a turn "im Suden?" Is it time to tap into Roe's pastoral Romanticism and Moe's sparky bleeps and blips? Time to put Eric Clapton into "the Krautock meat grinder?" Is it, indeed, time to check in on CLUSTER? Damn straight, Brüder und Schwestern: it's SUGARTIME.
The Dean Von Music Podcast Show Coming to you Live from Las Vegas, Nevada
This episode brings me back to 1978 on my birthday when I got in my first Rock Band Aftershock and met the Lead Guitarist Bruce Paller. Bruce and I have known each other for over 40 years, I had just turned 15 years old at the time and in search of my first Rock Band, yes I had already been playing with my neighborhood friends and I was actually playing the drums, but for my birthday I was given this really cool Farfisa Organ, this keyboard was used by a number of popular musicians including Sam the Sham, Pink Floyd, Sly Stone, Blondie, and the B-52's [see description below], so I combined the Farfisa sound with my CAT Synthesizer, wow did I have some “Groovy Sounds” lol – So back to when I met Bruce, it was my 15th Birthday and I was living in Covina, California, I read this ad in the newspaper “Band looking for keyboard player” I immediately said to my dad “Dad can you please take me to an audition for this band, they're over in West Covina”, he said sure since it's your birthday, I was so excited to get in a real band for the first time, playing with my friends was fun and cool but I was pretty sure we weren't going anywhere anytime soon and I “HAD TO GET THIS PARTY STARTED” if you know what I mean. So let's bring in Bruce Wayne Paller and get his side of the story, I'm pretty sure I'm leaving a whole bunch of good stuff out…. OK, I know it's not midweek, as I'd promised. But I am back after an unscheduled hiatus, and with any luck I'll be posting more regularly. Patrons, I'll be updating you regularly in the Newsletter (which I swear won't be so much about me, but you're on the journey too and I do appreciate your support). "I Can Help" is one of those songs that managed to come together very quickly for Billy Swan, and it turned into his biggest hit as a songwriter, and his only hit as a performer. One of the things I like about it is the way that it feels like a generic offer of assistance, not unlike Bill Withers' "Lean On Me," and yet at the same time there's a little undercurrent of a guy who's desperate to get out of the Friend Zone ("If your child needs a daddy, I can help."—really?). But on the casual listen you don't really care, because of the way that Farfisa organ just carries you along, like you're in a skating rink and just along for the ride. One of the cool things about Billy Swan, though, is that he really wasn't cut out to be a rock star. He greatly preferred being the sideman. And as soon as all the excitement over "I Can Help" died down, he went beck to playing in Kris Kristofferson's tour band. Part of that, he thinks, is because he was never comfortable having to talk in between the songs. If all he had to do was sing, he'd probably be okay. Click here for a transcript of this episode.

Si tienen hasta temas bailables, Kiss tienen el I Was Made For Lovin You y Ghost el Dance Macabre. Cada oyente sacara parecidos diferentes.

NYC rocker LORNE BEHRMAN, the singer-songwriter-guitarist who previously played in The Dimestore Haloes, L.E.S. Stitches, The Dead Tricks and most recently The Sweet Things, today has shared the video for “Sandcastles.” It's a tense and urgent rocker marked by an ominous guitar riff, spooky Farfisa organ and chilling lyrics about the effects of childhood sexual abuse (“What was done to me was done to you, I know/You're just the messenger, I know”). “Sandcastles” marks the second release from LORNE's debut solo EP WHEN I HIT THE FLOOR that's due October 15 on Spaghetty Town Records. Chicken Ranch Records was founded by Mike Dickinson in Ruston, LA in 1994. The label's initial purpose was to release albums by the Habitual Sex Offenders, a sarcastic punk rock combo he was drumming for."We basically just wanted to put out a record with our name on it," Dickinson says. "Then it became a real label."Dickinson first moved to Austin in 1996 but lived in Nashville from 2000 to 2004. It was there that he discovered the Clutters, a Farfisa-fueled garage rock quartet that's become one of Chicken Ranch's flagship acts along with Georgia-bred garage stalwarts the Woggles. The label's also tapped local bands like Jesus Christ Superfly and Automusik. Chicken Ranch's aesthetic has expanded to include Mr. Lewis & the Funeral 5's 21st century cabaret, as well as the gothic bluegrass soundscapes of Starlings, TN."I tend to gravitate toward eclectic music," Dickinson says. "I like bands that aren't afraid to do their own thing."https://store.chickenranchrecords.com/Host - Trey Mitchelltreymitchellphotography IG and FBfeeding_the_senses_unsensored on IG and FBFor Sponsorship Information or Questions - ftsunashville@gmail.comTheme Song - Damien HorneTake It From Me @damienhorne

During the Civil Rights Era how were Latino rhythms marketed to a popular audience? Free market capitalism popularized Latino music to the general record buying public and two styles in particular arose during the classic pop era. Latino rock is rock music performed by Mexican American groups or music with themes derived from it's culture. Latino rock, to a great extent, does not refer to any single style or approach. Some of these groups do not sing in Spanish at all, or use any specific Latin instruments or sounds. The sub genre is defined by the ethnicity of its performers, and as a result covers a wide range of approaches. Please consider buying "La Bamba" by Richie Valens and other great examples of Latino Rock!
We are so pleased to share this first episode from this incredible, utterly beautiful, fun radio play story series, Mary Farfisa's Outer Space Radio Theater. Mary Farfisa is an eight-year-old space-girl who travels the Galaxies on her space-horse, Briscoe. She goes from planet to planet, searching for “songs and sounds and music and noise” to share with the rest of the Universe. Mary catches the songs and sounds and music and noise in her “audio lasso.” Then she brings them to the Listener's Library — an intergalactic collection of sounds, curated by music-loving super-beings called the “Listeners.” Over the season, you get to know quite a few endearing, exciting, and clever characters. Parents will appreciate the beautiful music, high audio quality, and refreshing dash of humor in the characters and dialogue.Episode 1: THE SOUND STEALER - Mary Farfisa and her space-horse Briscoe visit Bazorbabill, where all of the sounds things make are mysteriously disappearing. Episode 47 The French Love Their Synthesizers Playlist Roger Roger (Cecil Leuter), “Duetto (La Concierge Et Le Monsieur Du Premier)” and “Rondeau Cucu” from Musique Idiote (1970 Neuilly).

Ambient Meditations Podcast Vol 10 - Bing & Ruth (David Moore) This week we are joined by Bing & Ruth's David Moore to talk about his new album, inspirations from the California desert, the Farfisa organ, and more. Their new album Species came out on 4AD July 17 (2020) and will mark the fourth album from his shape-shifting modern minimalist/ambient ensemble. Moore's Ambient Meditations mix he has done for us runs almost as a sort of parallel to Species, a cinematic score to man's constant, if not eternal, existential dilemma. Inspired by classic soundtracks, artistic contemplation, and our place in the universe. The mix is expanding, beautiful, and timely in this time of pandemic peril, political strife, and global warming. This one will make you think, feel, and hopefully recalibrate. Enjoy. Tracklist: Gustavo Santaolalla - Tema Amores Perros + Atacama Jefre Cantu-Ledesma - Tracing Back The Radiance Thomas Newman - Angela Undress Chihei Hatakeyama - Alone by the Sea Late Bloomer - Countances Ben Seretan - Shotgun a Cigarette in an Empty Strip Mall Parking Lot
One of the most un-nerving interviews I ever did was with one of the nicest guys in the business - the late Graeme Wright. Listening back to this conversation in 1984, you can tell that I inadvertently caused offence when talking about Farfisa and Bontempi organs. I don't think he ever forgave me! Graeme sadly passed away in 2015 and my broadcasting colleague Alan Ashton recorded a special tribute programme on Organ1st Radio (http://organradio.com/archive/) in Show 96 August 2015. As someone cited on a tribute website: "The guy that taught me to play always maintained Graeme Wright was the best British organist of his generation on the basis of being peerless when it came to making cheap organs sound expensive". How right he was. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/communitykeyboards/message
Ethnomusicology When I began Ethnomusicology classes at the University of Minnesota, I realized that I was a living specimen of our studies. Playing with Turkish, Mariachi, Polish and Salsa bands, to name a few, became for me, a bridge to other worlds and cultures, just what we were studying. The first group I played in was a garage/basement band, born on Atwater Avenue just east of Rice St. We instantly become a neighborhood favorite, performing regularly at Rice and Lawson Rec Center as well as numerous weddings and parties along the North End. We were 16, energetic and above all, affordable. Albert, our drummer and lead singer, sounded just like James Brown with a Tex-Mex kick. I played a red Farfisa organ which had a cheezy sharp sound popular in bands of the sixties ( hear Woolly Bully ) and Rob, the guitarist brought up the harmony section with his favorite Rolling Stones chops. My favorite gig the band played was a Romanian-Slovenian wedding. Someone heard us at the Rec center and arranged to hire us. The ceremony took place at Saint Mary’s Romanian Orthodox church behind what is now the Xcel Energy Credit Union at Rice and Atwater, and flowed across Rice into an old storefront that had been cleared out and converted into a party hall. No one in the wedding spoke much english and I knew less Romanian, or Slovenian. As we setup our equipment, a man, dressed in a black suit, who seemed to have some idea of what was going on, approached us. He wore a greyish moustache with a short brimmed Fedora, that floated atop his grey wispy hair. After directing our setup, he pointed to a large cooler of beer on stage left, grinned and made a drinking motion with his hands. We got the idea. As the bride and groom took the floor we waded into a raucous version of Johnny B Goode. We enjoyed it, but reading the faces in the crowd, I could tell the audience wasn’t quite digging the beat. The guy in the Fedora approached us and waved his index finger saying no, no, no. He proceeded to hum a melody, clapping to keep the rhythm, I assumed to be Romanian. We took a few notes at a time and when we had a close approximation he clapped and nodded yes. We played that song for about twenty minutes as the wooden floors buckled and creaked beneath the dancers’ feet. That tune did the trick and it wasn’t long before we wore out the old timers, who were quickly replaced by younger sets of legs. The whole place was swinging to the beat. We played a little rock n roll interspersed with the Romanian melody every few tunes. When the beer was gone, and Albert’s bass drum leg withered, the event was declared complete. The man in the suit presented us with four five dollar bills, smiled and nodded thank you. Everyone went home happy. Since then I have performed in many parts of the world and the things I learned that night have stayed dear to me. I discovered that music is a universal messenger, and, if you are going to be a career musician you’d better know some good percussionists, cultivate a good memory, and be able to fake your way through a gig. That melody still pops into my head once in a while.
Not only does Jeremiah come over to talk with Dan, he brings a couple of the guys in the Lore (his backing band): Ben Money and Tim Bostwick. The guys chat about their upbringing, about finally breaking out of their small hometown as musicians, and their incredibly unique approach to instrumentation that keeps them from being just another roots-folk band. They've got a new record out, 'From Bare Bones', available anywhere you get digital music.

Peter Deneff, an accomplished Pianist and Jazz Fusion musician, discusses his background, his involvement in the Los Angeles Middle Eastern Music club Scene, and his approach to microtonality and Jazz music. Topics Include: Deneff’s background as a Greek-American keyboard/piano musician, growing up in Long Beach/Los Angeles Impact of the bouzouki on his musical development and interests and working with artists from other ethnic backgrounds Collecting LPs and copying them to cassette tapes – compilations from the past and listening to those artists and how that influenced his playing and repertoire The peak of the music scene at Athenian Gardens in the SoCal live cabaret/bellydance music scene in the 70s/80s/90s The cultural melding of Greek and Gypsy/Turkish music (Skilarika), and the influence of Pontic Greeks in that style along with the music scene of Thessaloniki Exposure to the Armenian music scene locally with aficionados and artists (Harout Khatchoyan, Yervand Kalajian, Vik Momjian, Hratch Yacoubian, Hovig Krikorian) The impact of Persian and Arabic music on his career and how this blended with his Greek background in music Detail of his studying with Mike Garson (legendary Jazz Pianist who worked with David Bowie) Thoughts on music as a language with different dialects across middle eastern music and jazz Would practice playing along to Charlie Parker’s music Differences between makam music and jazz, and how they informed his understanding of proficiency in both styles His use of microtonality in his music in makam and jazz music, and his first memory of hearing quarter tones used by a Lebanese tsiftelli record years ago Discussion of various keyboards and synthesizers he uses in his music, and the use of scale converters for quarter-tone usage Explanation of quarter tones in Arabic music, the use of 50 cent adjustments Different flavors of microtonality he uses in his music, for example hijaz and the adjustment of various pitches within the mode and how live music can diverge from the uniformity and rigidity of the classical motif Mention of playing quarter/microtones on the bouzouki from certain players His attraction to how Armenian music in the 1970s and 1980s moved toward keyboard-centric instrumentation and the impact of this on his musical development His performances are about speaking to the audience and interaction with people and the connections that arise from his music and performance Keyboards and accordions used in Greek music, along with Farfisa organs The “dead zone” of lacking keyboards in Greek music back several decades ago was not exploring keyboards like Armenian music was, and now there is a lot more clarinet and violin exposure with microtonality and reincorporation of traditional ethnic elements – which was not the scene when he was coming up playing music Comments on some of the Greek keyboard players he listened too for musical guidance and perspective His work with Enrico Macias IM’s work with the synth app and upcoming sample library recording projects Would love to do concerts with Bach and the Beatles, Kasansides, Paliyolokous Excursion, Synthesi projects are a big focus for him

Karina Deniké is a vocalist and songwriter from the San Francisco Bay Area. Born in Cambridge, England to Czech dissident artists, Deniké spent her early years performing street theatre throughout Europe, Northern Africa, and India. Upon settling in Oakland, California at age 12, she immersed herself in the vibrant local arts and music scenes of the area, soaking in everything from punk shows at the legendary 924 Gilman to the talents of jazz/soul greats Jon Hendricks, Fred Marshall (Vince Guaraldi, Chet Baker), and Sugar Pie Desanto. At age 18 she released her first album with the dual female fronted Dance Hall Crashers, and at 22 she was signed to major labels MCA and Warner/Discovery. Deniké has made a lifelong study of the finer nuances of vocals, harmony, and performance, moving fluidly from intimate torch song chanteuse to soul singer to punk powerhouse. From pop music to jazz to modern composers' works, she has lent her voice, arrangements, and compositions to more than 30 records, soundtracks, and countless national and international performances, and is an active member of the Bay Area music scenes. After extensive and fruitful collaborative work, Karina Deniké is excited to present the first album entirely focused on her unique compositional voice. "The writing for this album, Under Glass, began when I fell in love with a beautiful Farfisa chord organ. A charming, quirky wooden toy whose big reedy sound fully transported me to another time. I immediately wrote the song 'Musee Mecanique', a 1930’s inspired love ditty with a nod to my dear San Francisco and her stunning shores." Under Glass was released April 14, 2015 and features Deniké's six piece band and an impressive list of additional talent. Centered around power vocal performances and ornamented with an unusually rich collection of vintage sounds — including the chord organ, bass clarinet, Fender VI baritone guitar, vibraphone, and celeste — Under Glass features some of the Bay Area’s finest musicians and composers: Aaron Novik (Tzadik Records, PortoFranco Records), Michael McIntosh (Ralph Carney's Serious Jass Project, the Cottontails), James Frazier, Eric Garland (Mads Tolling, Donavon), and Lily Taylor (Pour Le Corps Records). The album also highlights guests Deston Berry and Alex Dessert (Hepcat), Ralph Carney (Tom Waits, B-52's), Brigid Dawson (Thee Oh Sees), Ara Anderson (Tin Hat, OK GO), and Meric Long (The Dodos). With nods to doo wop drama, crackly records, Motown beats, girl group harmonies, 60's soundtracks, and Eastern European Lullabies, Under Glass is both strikingly original and warmly nostalgic. Its 12 reflective songs are filled with tales of female aviators, love, memory, and personal and regional history, firmly rooted in the musical worlds and seaside city Karina Denike calls home. Deniké has recorded with Dance Hall Crashers (MCA), NOFX (Epitaph), Tony Sly/No Use for a Name (Fat Wreck Chords), Ralph Carney's Serious Jass Project (Smog Veil), and Hepcat (Hellcat), among others. She has shared bills with artists including The Pretenders, Fiona Apple, Beck, The Ramones, Thee Oh Sees, and Aimee Mann and performed at prestigious venues and events around the world, such as the Montreux Jazz Festival (Switzerland), the Reading Festival (UK), the Warped tour, and the Fillmore. Recently, she contributed the acclaimed opening track to The Songs of Tony Sly; A Tribute (Fat Wreck Chords), was the guest music director for the SF Bay Area's Undercover Presents Series tribute to Bob Dylan's Highway 61 Revisited (hosted by The Contemporary Jewish Museum of San Francisco), contributed lead vocals and vocal production to the album Home Street Home: The sHit Musical (written by Fat Mike of NOFX, and Tony Award winner/Avenue Q co-writer Jeff Marx), contributed a song to the 20th Century Fox film This Means War featuring Reese Witherspoon, and performed at the opening party for the world renowned art festival dOCUMENTA 2012, in Kassel, Germany.
Hej, my name is Martin and I played drums for the Faintest Ideas/ javelins when we were around. These ögnhalsmottagningen that me and Stew Boyracer formed over the phone in late 2007. Apart from that I make hip hop/ dance music under the name Acid Lindgren, play guitar in a new band that might be called Anti-social Darwinists, Pretentious Assholes, Compulsive Record Collectors (or something completely different) as well as DJ under the monkier ADHDJ (thanks for the name Marisa). I live in Gothenburg, Sweden and one of my dreams is to one day have enough money to release a vinyl box of everything The Capstan Shafts will ever record. I am allergic to lactose, and think Chuck Reutter and Mike Spiegs should move to Sweden and start a band with me. Some of this stuff is actually true.1. Huggy Bear "Her jazz" (7", Wiiija/Cat Call, UK, 1993) – Huggy Bear is, together with Black Flag, Minor Threat, Bikini Kill, Boyracer and Beat Happening the most important and influential bands ever in my book. Everything about the band was, and is still so exciting to me, and why I never went to Emmaboda to see them in 93 still puzzles me to this day.2. The Carpettes "Small wonder" (7", Small Wonder, UK, 1978) – A totally perfect punk song (with a simple, but amazing drum beat in the chorus) that sums up everything that's so great about D.I.Y. in a few lines, so just sing along; "I don't need record companies that wanna rule me/ all of them think so obscene/ but I don't care about publicity/I just don't care for your generosity/ Small wonder/ they give you the bright idea to be a star/ you'll never make it, you'll never go far/ they say a good musician has gone to waste/ I tell you it's just a stupid taste/ Small wonder/ you talk about popularity/ d'ya think that it's a wise move?/ the useless generation knows nothing, so what does it prove?/ I can tell you straight to your face/ small wonder, the saviour of the human race yeah!/ Small wonder"3. Lockjaw "Radio call sign" (7", Raw, UK, 1977) – I can't resist to include at least one release from Lee Wood's Raw label as he released way too many great bands. This is the band that introduced Simon Gallup of the Cure to the world, and the song got enough energy to light up a medium sized Swedish town. Great drum rolls and fantastic Spaceward production.4. Svart "Otålighetens gräns" (7", Stranded, Sweden, 1980) - This song is taken Svart's debut EP, which is one of Sweden's finest post-punk releases. The band did an LP the year after this 7" was released, and even if the LP has some great songs it could never match the ones on their debut. I think this just might be the first Swedish indiepop record.5. Roadrunners "Love me as I am" (7", Beluga, Sweden, 1999) – The Roadrunners were one of Sweden's finest neo-garage bands that had everything I want from a band it that genre. They looked great, had great production on their records, and most important, they knew how to write killer tunes. All of their 7inches and EP's are well worth searching for, even if this is their best song in my opinion.6. Hormones in Abundance "Bad songs, bad people" (7", Heavenly Pop Hits, Sweden, 2004) – Bad people get the bad songs they deserve and in my opinion Patrik is one of the greatest song writers in Sweden. 41 seconds of indiepop perfection!7. Unrelated Segments "Story of my life" (7", Hanna-Barbera, USA, 1966) – 13 years before Dead Kennedys released "California über alles" these Michigan kids released this amazing slab of proto punk thrash, and in my opinion it seems like Jello Biafra owes quite a lot to the Segments lead singer Ron Stults when it comes to vocal delivery. This was the bands first 7" out of 3, and they are all equally great and intense.8. ABKK "Ronny" (7", EFMD, Sweden, 1981) – Fast, faster, fastest, weird, weirder and weirdest keyboard in the history of Swedish punkrock! This is released on the same label as Tuppjukk and Dom Vässade. EFMD stood for Enad front mot disco (United front against disco) and the label took lessons from Desperate Bicycles and printed the breakdown of the total printing costs on their record sleeves.9. Lars Langs "Chartertönt" (7", Pels-Votten, Sweden, 1980) – This song is taken from Lars Lang's only EP, that's thanks to a typo is called "Greatest Hit" instead of "greatest hits" and it's one of my favorite Swedish 7inches. 5 songs and they are all as great as this one.10. Mizz Nobody "Smittad" (7", DO 69, Sweden, 1978) – Mizz Nobody was Sweden's answer to The Petticoats or Poly Styrene and this is once again one of my favorite songs. Pay close attention to the amazing guitar sound she managed to come up with, and pay even closer attention to the killer guitar break in the middle of the song.11. Push Kings "Florida" (7", Double Agent, USA, 1996) – Together with Pants Yell! and The Remains, The Push Kings are among the best pop bands ever from Boston, and this is probably my favorite song by these well-dressed pop stars. Anyone who knows what happened to them; feel free to let me know.12. The Jumpers "My girl" (7", Dront, Sweden, 1982) – These young small town mods only released one EP, where this is the best song. It's not the best mop top song from Sweden by far, but it still got a guitar line and melody that I just can't resist.13. Lee Kings "On my way" (Flexi, Bildjournalen, Sweden, 1966) The Lee Kings was pretty much your average 60's teen band, but on this flexi they sure gave the Who and The Sorrows a run for the money when it came to feedback driven breaks. I'm pretty sure Stew Boyracer will like this one.14. Mecano Ltd. "Face cover face" (7", No Fun, Holland, 1978) – Here's some great and raw Dutch punk on the legendary No Fun label that also released one of the best punk records of all time; The Helmettes' "I don't care...". From what I can understand from their discography the band is still around in some form, but this 7" is basically all you need from them in my humble opinion.15. Boyracer "Where to place yr trust?" (12", 555, USA, 2009) – Boyracer is one of my favorite bands and Stewart is a great friend of mine, and not to mention an amazing song writer, so not including them in this set would just be preposterous. This song is takes from the LP version of Happenstance that was first released as a CD by HHBTM, but as the LP's got a few bonus tracks I highly recommend you to pick up a copy of this release as well as everything else Stew's got in stock before it's too late. In the songs I wrote for javelins/ The Faintest ideas I borrowed (or stole) so much from Boyracer that I owe them royalties for the rest of my life I guess.16. Von Gam "Hasse parasit" (7", Gam Produktion, Sweden, 1980) – Brilliant and quite noisy punk from these young kids from Hovmanstorp (situated next to nowhere) produced by Sticky Bomb from Kriminella Gitarrer and demon producer Pål Spectrum. This song is about a creepy bastard who only lives for profit.17. The Misfits "She" (7", Blank, USA, 1977) – The first recording by the Misfits is their finest moment according to me. I love that Glen played a Farfisa organ through a fuzz pedal instead of bothering with finding a guitar player. Sloppy card board drums, the way too loud mixed bass and Glen's amazing voice together makes this the best version of this fantastic song.18. Pizzoar "År 3000" (7", Massproduktion, Sweden, 1980) – The Faintest Ideas covered this song for the Yellow Mica compilation "Wearing our punk rock hearts on our sleeves", but our version could never hold a candle to the original version. No surprise there I guess, even if I really liked Christoffer's weird and one of a kind accent on our version.19. Milky Wimpshake "Dialling tone" (7", Ferric Mordant, UK, 1999) – Daniel who played guitar for the Faintest Ideas introduced me to Milky Wimpshake and for that I'm forever thankful to him. This is such a great song and I wish I could write songs as good as this one.20. Bugs "Bloody mess" (7", Bugs, Sweden, 1979) – A bunch of very young kids who had a drummer who never figured out how to use the kick drum, so they just ignored that part of the drum kit. The singer counts in the song by saying 1,2,3, shotgun! Brilliant!21. Kriminella Gitarrer "Vårdad klädsel" (7", Kloaak, Sweden, 1978) – This 7" recorded in December 1977 has been labeled Sweden's first punk record sung in Swedish. Two of the most magic minutes in punk record history!22. The Zeros "Radio fun" (7", Small Wonder, UK, 1977) – I listen to the radio a lot when I'm at home or at work, so what could be better than a song that celebrates the fun with radio? Most of the early releases on the Small Wonder label are equally great as this one, so do yourself a favor and keep an eye open for that label when you go through the records at your favorite 2nd hand shop.23. Bad Town Boys "Borrowed time" (7", Dionysus, USA, 1990) – The first time I heard this song I was sure it was a recording from the early 80's, but it's actually written and recorded during the late hair metal period and released long before the entire retro punk wave became fashionable. This is one hell of a song!24. Richard Berry and the Pharaohs "Louie Louie" (7", Flip, USA, 1957) – The BEST song ever written. Period!
