An important element essential to modern American food didn't happen until the end of the 19th century. But as with so many of the other elements that are underpinnings of American food - it is not a food at all. Instead it is paper made of trees rather than paper made of cloth that has reached the end of it's life. And once wood pulp paper becomes part of the scene - how food is transported, labeled and sold will never be the same.Think about a world before you put could wrap meat in Butcher's Paper, before crackers came in boxes - it looks almost unrecognizable. But come along for the debut of cheap-er paper in American food - and how this changes everything.Music Credit: Fingerlympics by Doctor TurtleShow Notes: https://thehistoryofamericanfood.blogspot.com/Email: TheHistoryofAmericanFood at gmail dot comThreads: @THoAFoodInstagram: @THoAFood& some other socials... @THoAFood

In Episode 25, GOALS: Rice Cracker Range Day, ARDREW, DAN, Gat Lab, and guest Dutch try to piece together their Des Moines trip. They linger on One Horse risking it all with factory forced-reset triggers, then get completely derailed by a West Virginia gunsmith who hands out rice crackers and builds a 6mm ARC that shoots tighter than their attention spans. Gat falls hard for the handmade Sea Spider suppressor so quiet that people kept talking through full magazines, while the rest of the crew bickers about empty tubes, crossbolt safeties, and every new can company claiming to have reinvented physics. A short, careful note about the recent NFA district-court ruling is quickly buried under media-day photos, vendor chats, and the usual awkward creator networking. By the end they're still baffled that ordinary shooters somehow walked away with media credentials and a PowerPoint full of range pictures.

A rock band is only as good as its ability to surprise you, and Anne Harris is built for surprise. She's the fiddle player you hear with Cracker, and we talk about the first night it clicked that turned into an open invitation to sit in and stretch out. Along the way, Anne explains what makes musical chemistry real: shared taste, trust, and the kind of listening that turns solos into a back-and-forth conversation. We get deep into the art of live improvisation and why it keeps a show from getting stale, especially when the set can change on a dime. Anne also tackles the difference between a violinist and a fiddle player, and how style and tradition shape the same instrument. From there, the story widens across projects like Gypsy Blue Review and Halo Rider, and touring with Taj Mahal and Keb Mo as part of TajMo, a gig she describes as a living education in music history. If you care about live music, real human creativity, and the stories behind the songs, listen through and share it with a friend who still believes the stage is sacred.Learn Something New orRemember Something OldPlease like and follow the Music in My Shoes Facebook and Instagram pagesReach out to us at musicinmyshoes@gmail.comSend us a one-way message.

Singer-songwriter Ike Reilly has been reaching critical mass. He shared a microphone with Bruce Springsteen in January, has gained new fans with the 2024 documentary Don't Turn Your Back on Friday Night (as well as his SiriusXM show), and is wowing more listeners than ever with his longtime band the Ike Reilly Assassination. He has made music his family business, with his three sons performing with him while his oldest son, Shane, is featured on his new album, Blind and Surrounded, out June 12. Reilly's sharply observed songs can rouse you and/or break your heart, and he's quite a storyteller. Here he reflects on how his sons relate to him as a band leader vs. father, and he discusses his friendships with fellow Libertyville, Ill.,, native Tom Morello and Cracker's David Lowery and Johnny Hickman, among others. A former gravedigger and employee-of-the-year Park Hyatt doorman, Reilly also recalls getting stiffed by a future President of the United States—and what he did in response.

A band that lives in a hearse sounds like a gimmick until you hear the reasons it happened and the work it takes to keep it going. We're joined in the studio by Shaun and Rachel from The Stifftones, a DIY touring duo that turned a full reset into a full-time musical life, complete with two dogs, a rolling home, and a schedule built around small venues, open mics, and the people they meet along the way.We talk through the origin story, from an open mic to a relationship they describe as “best frenemies,” and how that honesty becomes a creative advantage. They break down the practical side of life on the road: dividing roles, handling tension in tight spaces, and learning how to keep moving when the vehicle that carries your entire world decides to quit on you. If you care about independent music, touring logistics, and the emotional reality behind “chasing the dream,” this conversation gets specific fast.We also dig into the album Existentialism on Main Street and how The Stifftones captured tracks across multiple locations and collaborators while staying true to their sound. Along the way we hear about mentors like Johnny Hickman of Cracker, connections to Camper Van Beethoven, the story behind their cover of “Father Winter,” and a wild REM thread that includes a Peter Buck jacket.Listen through to the end for a live performance of “These Times,” then subscribe, share this with a friend who needs a push to go all in, and leave us a review. “As the CIA has already assessed, COVID-19 most likely originated from a lab leak, and efforts to undermine that conclusion are disingenuous,” says a CIA spokesperson – words that would have gotten them banned from social media just a few years ago. The CIA's admission was published after a 20-year CIA veteran dropped a bombshell under oath: Dr. Anthony Fauci intentionally influenced intelligence agencies to cover up the COVID-19 lab leak. Even worse, whistleblower James Erdman testified that the CIA illegally spied on the very investigators trying to uncover the truth. Episode 3535: Jeremy explores how long-term tax strategies can shape not just your retirement, but your child's financial future, showing how compounding, RMDs, and account structure could turn a modest IRA into a multi-million-dollar inheritance. He highlights how proactive Roth conversions at low tax rates today can shield future generations from higher taxes later. The takeaway: thoughtful, flexible planning now can dramatically improve after-tax wealth across decades. Read along with the original article(s) here: https://www.gocurrycracker.com/multi-generational-tax-minimization/ Quotes to ponder: "The simplest way to become rich is to be born to the right parents." "Mathematically speaking, choosing to pay 10% now on a Roth conversion is equivalent to paying 10% on a larger withdrawal 60 years from now (associative property of multiplication.)" By examining concepts like stepped-up basis and retirement account withdrawals, he highlights how small decisions today can significantly impact what heirs ultimately keep. Read along with the original article(s) here: https://www.gocurrycracker.com/multi-generational-tax-minimization/ Quotes to ponder: "The basis on inherited assets is stepped up to the market value at the time of death."
