You can find the podcast on Threads, Instagram and Bluesky. I Married a Monster from Outer Space was released as part of a double bill (with The Blob) in 1958. The story focuses on newlywed couple Marge and Bill Farrell but unbeknownst to his new bride and the whole town Bill has been replaced by an alien on the eve of their wedding. Themes of marriage, resentments and gendered expectations are as rife as can be expected in the 1950s. We have two insightful experts help shine a light on these themes. The Experts Thomas Doherty is a professor of American Studies at Brandeis University, he is a cultural historian with a special interest in Hollywood cinema on which he has written extensively. Sherryl Vint is Professor of Science Fiction Media Studies at the University of California, Riverside. Behind the Mitten - Episode 691On this weekend's show, John Gonzalez and Amy Sherman spend time in one of their Michigan cities - Bay City!Segment 1: We kicks things off with newly elected mayor of Bay City, Christopher Girard. (Man, does this guy have some energy! We love him.)Segment 2: We also stop at some of our favorite restaurants, including Krzysiak House Restaurant, to talk to owner and long-time friend, Donny. This is a must stop for incredbile Polish meatballs and honey fried chicken. We approve as some of the best fried chicken in Michigan.Segment 3: Amy and Gonzo also get to tour the Michigan Rock and Roll Legends Hall of Fame Museum with founder/curator Gary Johnson, who shares his passion for Michigan rock history and the significance that Bay City plays in it. Not only was Madonna born in Bay City, but so was early punk with ? and the Mysterians known for the classic "96 Tears." Framed albums, memorabilia, posters, tons of great photos and a cool theater with a video series on the history of Michigan Rock and Roll are all inside. Fun fact: Johnson said the auto industry had a huge impact on the Michigan rock scene, which makes Michigan very unique. The museum opened March 12, 2022. It is located at the Bay County Historical Museum. Segment 4: It gets a little emotional with the Larner family because both Amy and Gonzo were so close to the matriarch, Jackie Larner. We sit down and talk to the family, whose goal it is to honor their mom's legacy since passing away in September of 2021. The famous Mussell Beach Drive In near the State Park and continues to make some of the best onion rings, burgers and coney dogs in the state,. Gary Taylor is not the average 'roll out the barrel' or 'oberek' artist. Performing state wide with some regional trips since the 1960s, Taylor found himself in great company while at Handy High School in the early '60s. Able to play saxophones and clarinet, Taylor was a first call artist, getting gigs and rubbing elbows with many of the Michigan polka legends.     Taylor ran his own band coming out of the Pat Lepeak and The Starliners as the '70s progressed, headlining polka festivals and achieving freedom as a multi-talented bandleader. Always in search of 'better mixes' and perfect 'lathe cut vinyl' for his projects, Taylor was able to release one collectible 45 as a headliner as Gary Taylor & The Happy Knights. His stories start at the Art Schiell home recording studio (which ? & The Mysterians put on the map). From there, he ventured to Detroit and around studio to studio, cutting parts and searching for his sound. Having hung up his woodwinds in the '90s, Taylor is an audiophile, listening to all types of music, and reveling in the perfect polka sounds. This is his story...

Mad Dog--a 1970's independent touring machine, known for crossing the state and region, fuzzed out and throttling headliners like Bob Seger, has gone on to have their much-sought-after debut album '617' amongst the finest crate dig finds in many vinyl collectors realms. Straight out of Bay City, Mad Dog's '617' continues to be a highlight in the murky power/stoner rock realm through 2024.    Brother's Bob (guitar/vocals) and Joe (drums/vocals) Charlebois along with driving force and Bassist Don Langenburg, were a power trio that still gets word-of-mouth, and even had bootleggers re-releasing their album around 2005. For the first time in decades, the MMHP has pulled together the original line-up for a Q&A session that delivers a brotherhood, moment in time, and with the brilliant sonic thumbprint that got them inducted into the Michigan Rock Legends Hall of Fame in 2019.    Part 2 of 2 takes us from the NYC promo run, to the second (unreleased) album, to where the power trio is at now with Blues Mobile, The Burdons, and tribute bands with Bob Seger/Kenny Rogers backing Saginaw Sheriff Bill Federspiel. Special thanks to Outrageous Cherry/The Volbeats guitarist/vocalist, songwriter extraordinaire Matthew Smith for spearheading this idea to reunite and get the legacy behind the trio. Mad Dog--a 1970's independent touring machine, known for crossing the state and region, fuzzed out and throttling headliners like Bob Seger, has gone on to have their much-sought-after debut album '617' amongst the finest in vinyl collectors realms. Straight out of Bay City, Mad Dog's '617' continues to be a highlight in the murky power-rock/stoner rock realm through 2024. Special thanks to Outrageous Cherry/The Volbeats guitarist/vocalist, songwriter extraordinaire Matthew Smith for spearheading this idea to reunite and get the legacy behind the trio. Mark Sanders has been there and done that. From the '60 to his current output, Sanders has never given up on songs, creation, and finding the right tones to formulate excellent songs. Some of his first big stage tastes were opening for Ramblin Jack Elliot and The Blues Magoos after winning Battle of the bands at Daniels Den in Saginaw while in The Next Exit Blues Band. That band was coming out of another he was in, The Rogues, where he shared the stage with other luminaries of the time, including The Bossmen, ? and The Mysterians, Shadows Of Night, and ultimately a unique gig with The Animals.     From the clubs and main stages, rock, folk, and country eras, Mark is now retired from live shows, but was last playing with his wife Suzanne on keyboards & vocals in the Mark Sanders Band. Mark has four albums, he's back into blues and getting world-wide play, most recently a feature in Australia. This is a very intriguing ride and features a new song of his, 'On A Night Like That.'

For this BONUS 'Mixtape Episode', we invited guitarist Cheetah Chrome (Dead Boys, Rocket From the Tombs) to curate a mixtape and dug into his selections. From growing up in Cleveland listening to rock-and-roll radio like CKLW out of Detroit to his mom unwittingly turning him on to The Stooges, it was a super-fun conversation with a true punk rock legend! Cheetah's mixtape: 1. Jumpin Jack Flash - The Rolling Stones 2. I Saw Her Standing There - The Beatles 3. 96 Tears - ? & The Mysterians 4. Born To Be Wild - Steppenwolf 5.
