FEATURED IN THIS EPISODE ALONGSIDE HOSTS Mike Wiston AND Joe Rubin: Janee Luts D'Ippolito kicks it off with a hauntingly beautiful version of "Creep" by Radiohead. Moody, emotional, and absolutely gripping. Anthony Gorby Sr tugs at the heartstrings with "I Can Still Make Cheyenne" by George Strait. Classic country storytelling at its finest. Angel Lark lets loose with "Love Stinks" by J. Geils Band. It’s bitter, it’s bold, and it’s a total bop. Mike Wiston brings the dramatic flair with "Somebody Kill Me" from The Wedding Singer. Darkly hilarious and oddly relatable. Karen Pavkov says exactly what we’re all thinking with "No More F***s to Give" by Thomas Benjamin. It’s cheeky, empowering, and a total mood. Eric Dubrofsky offers some heartfelt healing with "It'll Be Okay" by Shawn Mendes. Gentle, soothing, and full of hope. Dana LaValle turns the tables with "Gives You Hell" by The All-American Rejects. A perfect revenge anthem with serious singalong energy. Kevin Parish Sr closes the show with a punchy and fun cover of "The Breakup Song" by Greg Kihn Band. A retro jam that still hits hard. SF Board of Supervisors President Aaron Peskin, Part 1 (S7E1)

Storied: San Francisco

Aaron Peskin is incredibly easy to talk with. And his life story is one you have to hear to believe. In this podcast, Episode 1 of Season 7 of Storied: San Francisco, the multi-term D3 supervisor-slash-president of the Board of Supervisors-slash-current candidate for mayor of San Francisco shares his story, beginning with the tales of his parents and their families' migration to the United States. On Aaron's mom's side, the story goes back to Russia. His maternal grandfather was one of five boys born to a Jewish family in Saint Petersburg. Two of the boys stayed in Russia, one came to San Francisco, and the other two migrated across Russia amid revolutionary upheaval there to the Mediterranean and later, to Haifa in Palestine. Aaron's grandfather ended up in Tel Aviv. His mom was born there in 1940, when it was still Palestine. She migrated to the US in 1963 to visit her sister, who taught at a temple in Oakland. Aaron's mom ended up meeting his dad on that fateful trip, and the two were married five weeks later. On his dad's side, his grandparents came to the US from Poland before the Nazi invasion in 1939, arriving in New York City where they ran a candy store. Aaron's dad went to City College of New York, where he graduated and got into UC Berkeley grad school for psychology. On his bus ride west, though, the elder Peskin got drafted to serve the US Army in its war in Korea. After service, he finished his doctorate at Berkeley and got a job teaching at SF State, where he stayed for 40 years until he retired. Aaron goes on a sidebar about running into many of his dad's students from over the years, something that happens to him up to this day. His parents settled in Berkeley shortly after they got married, in 1963. They had Aaron in 1964. As a kid, in the 1970s, he remembers some of the goings on at SF State, when student-led protests and sit-ins were happening and the Ethnic Studies was founded. Back in the East Bay, Aaron attended the first fully integrated public school class in Berkeley. One of his classmates, from kindergarten through third, was none other than Kamala Harris. (See photos in the episode post on our website!) Aaron's younger brother is a professor at Arizona State University. Both his parents ended up in higher education. He calls himself the "black sheep" of his family in this regard, as he "only" ended up with a bachelor's degree. Both parents were also therapists, something they carried on amid their academic careers. Growing up in the 1970s, the family spent significant time in The City, coming over as often as possible from their home in Berkeley. Aaron rattles off a litany of activities his parents engaged him and his brother in when they were young. He says that his time in high school in the East Bay was idyllic. He went to Berkeley High, still the only high school in that city. He fell in with a group of four other boys who took weekend hiking and backpacking trips as much as possible. Also around this time, in his later teen/high school years, Aaron popped over to San Francisco to do things like see kung-fu movies in Chinatown or go to The Keystone to see The Cure and punk bands. He saw The Greg Kihn Band, Talking Heads, and other legendary groups at places like the Greek Theater and Mabuhay Gardens. He graduated Berkeley High in 1982, though he and a handful of friends got out a semester earlier than everyone else. They packed up a van, the five of them, and drove around the Western United States and Canada for 100 days. They ended their trip spending the night in the van in the Berkeley High parking lot. The friend group then scattered, predictably, with Aaron and a couple others heading down to UC Santa Cruz. In his freshman year, he and a friend took the spring semester off and rode their bikes from California to North Carolina and up to Washington, DC, as you do. Santa Cruz was different enough from home, but not too far away. The school provided a challenging academic environment for him, also. He ended up studying animal behavior, specifically the northern elephant seal. Through that program, he lived with a team in experimental housing on Año Nuevo Island off the San Mateo coast doing research. But physical chemistry precluded Aaron from going for a marine biology degree. He instead got into a liberal arts program called "Modern Society and Social Thought." While he was going to school in Santa Cruz, he experienced his first political awakening. Aaron was involved in the effort to make the banana slug become the school's official mascot. The student government wanted the slug, but the chancellor wanted the elephant seal. Aaron had the idea of putting the decision to a vote of the student body. They put ballot boxes all over campus, and the slug won overwhelmingly. But the chancellor rejected the results. News articles helped the students' cause, and they won in the end. During his college years, he travelled to Asia on money he'd saved from a job at a photo store. Neighbors in Berkeley had climbed the Himalayas several times, and it had an effect on Aaron. He and some friends went and travelled over parts of South Asia to do some climbing themselves. He was gone for a year and four months. Upon his return to the US, still working toward getting his bachelor's, Aaron ran into trouble getting student housing. And so he set up a tent in the woods above campus, slept there, went to class during the day, and then did it all again the next day. Check back next week for Part 2 and Aaron's life after college. Greg Kihn, the California-via-Baltimore pop rocker passed away in August 2024, leaving behind a truly great FM radio hit with “The Breakup Song” and his biggest song, “Jeopardy”, that hit #2 and found heavy rotation on MTV.  The same song was famously parodied by Weird Al Yankovic. Kihn also had a long career as a rock radio DJ on KFOX, and he wrote books. But mostly he was a guy who just kept rocking. After a run of yearly albums for more than a decade, from the mid 70's to the mid 80's, he released his final album (Rekihndled) in 2017, a throwback to the ringing guitars pounding drums, and the echoes-of-The Beatles sound that he mined for a long time. Sure, he's remembered for his two big two songs, but he and his Greg Kihn Band had a couple more kinda-hits and a catalog of under-the-radar power pop.  I liked Greg Kihn's music. Unpretentious working rock and roll. “We want people to come back to hear the music,” he said in a 1982 interview. “I mean, nobody goes to see Bruce Springsteen because of the light show.”

The band reconvened in Berry's own Soundtek Studios in the San Francisco Bay Area in 2023 to bend, shape, hammer and caress their diverse musical talents into 11 impressive new tracks.  With this album, they continue to define and build upon their unique melodic space, welding guitar-driven rock, metal and prog into a unique and powerful sonic setting. The bands self-titled debut, released in 2022, established the trio as a power chord-driven celebration of artistry, passion and persistence. Saga went on to sell roughly 10 million albums world-wide and continues to perform around the world.   Nigel Glockler best known as the drummer for British metal band SAXON. His powerhouse drumming is the engine that drives SiX By SiX's songs forwards relentlessly. Robert Berry, moved to the UK to work with guitarist Steve Howe (of Yes fame) along with drummer Nigel Glockler to revitalize GTR. When GTR stalled, Robert partnered with British rock legends Keith Emerson and Carl Palmer to form ‘3'.  With Emerson and Palmer, Robert achieved a top ten charting single and toured the USA. Robert's melodic sensibilities complement Ian's extraordinary guitar and Nigel's signature drumming perfectly.  Today they launch the album's second single, and you can watch the video for ‘Obiliex' here: https://youtu.be/y7QGXoTIvlI PLEASE WELCOME MUSICIAN/SINGER/SONGWRITER/PRODUCER/ENGINEER… ROBERT BERRY TO INTERVIEWING THE LEGENDS …   PREORDER BEYOND SHADOWLAND BY SIX BY SIX  (featuring Ian Crichton, Nigel Glockler & Robert Berry) The band's self-titled debut, released in 2022, established the trio as a power cord-driven celebration of artistry, passion, and persistence. In this episode of "Seeing Them Live," Charles welcomes guest Andy to share memorable concert stories. Andy discusses his extensive collection of concert ticket stubs, mentioning that he has about 350 concert stubs and over 125 stubs from other events. The conversation takes a nostalgic turn as they reminisce about concerts they attended together since seventh grade.Charles asks Andy about his first concert, and Andy's unique response involves distinguishing between tickets with stubs and those without. He reflects on his early concert experiences, particularly at Chicago Fest, where he saw acts like the Greg Kihn Band and the Joe Perry Project. The discussion delves into the significance of ticket stubs as memory triggers, providing insight into the concerts and events they attended. The conversation also touches on the value of concert tickets as collectibles. Andy shares that some of his Grateful Dead tickets from the 1980s are now worth more as collectibles than the original ticket prices. The mention of different venues and festivals like Chicago Fest sparks memories of specific shows and experiences, including encounters with iconic musicians like Muddy Waters. The conversation transitions to discussing the unique aspects of certain concerts, such as the legendary "wall of sound" designed by Owsley Bear Stanley for the Grateful Dead. Andy explains that, while he didn't witness the wall of sound, it was a significant part of the band's history. The discussion also covers social protocols at concerts, including designated areas for different groups of fans, such as the "deaf zone" for those going deaf and the presence of spinners (dancers). As the episode progresses, the hosts explore Andy's decision to swear off heavy metal concerts and share anecdotes from specific shows, both positive and challenging. The episode concludes with a brief mention of the Ticket Stub Museum, a concept introduced by the hosts, and the idea of incorporating personal stories or notations for each ticket in the museum. They express enthusiasm for the tangible and sentimental value of physical ticket stubs in contrast to digital ticketing.Bands Mentioned: Almond Brothers, Bob Dylan, Bob Weir, Grateful Dead, Greg Kihn Band, Iggy Pop, Jane's Addiction, Jason and the Scorchers, Jerry Garcia Band, Jethro Tull, Joe Perry Project, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Neil Young, Phil Lesh, Ramones, REM, Santana, Slayer, Stevie Ray Vaughan, The Moody Blues, Vulgar Boatmen.Venues Mentioned: Alpine Valley (mentioned in connection with Iron Maiden), Champaign (general reference), Chicago Fest, Chicago Theater, International Amphitheater (mentioned in connection with Iron Maiden and Judas Priest), Las Vegas (mentioned in connection with Bobby Weir), Mabel's (venue in Champaign, mentioned in connection with Otis and the Elevators), Salt Shed (King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard concert), Soldier Field (mentioned in connection with Chicago Fest with Stevie Ray Vaughan), UIC Pavilion. Robert Berry is an American singer, bassist and all-around multi-instrumentalist and record producer, best known for his work with Hush, 3 with Keith Emerson and Carl Palmer, Ambrosia, and Alliance. He was previously with The Greg Kihn Band, and as of 2022, he is with progressive band Six By Six, a super group composed of musicians Ian Crichton from Saga and Nigel Glockler of Saxon.Berry came into the spotlight in 1988, when he teamed with Keith Emerson and Carl Palmer (of Emerson, Lake & Palmer fame) and formed the band 3. Their only album, To the Power of Three saw the group gain some commercial success with the 1st single “Talkin' Bout” as it reached #9 on the Billboard rock charts that year. 3 disbanded in 1989 after a successful tour supporting the album. Berry also has contributed songs to a number of film soundtracks, including the Anthony Michael Hall film Out of Bounds. In 1999, Berry produced and performed on The Wheel of Time, an album billed as a soundtrack to the Robert Jordan fantasy series The Wheel of Time. He also works as a record producer and owns a state-of-the-art recording studio in northern CA.In 2015, Berry and Emerson signed with Frontiers Music and began working on a follow-up to To the Power of Three as 3.2. The project was shelved following Emerson's death in March 2016, but Berry would finish the project himself and release it in 2018 under the 3.2 moniker as The Rules Have Changed and then followed that up with “Third Impression” in 2021.Since then, Berry's focus has been on Six By Six as the band had world-wide success with their debut and are currently writing album #2 for release in 2023. Berry is also in the planning stages of a new Alliance album too so while we wait for those new records please enjoy Robert's conversation with The Jersey Guys!

Doug 'Cosmo' Clifford was the drummer and one part of the rhythm section for the legendary Creedence Clearwater Revival.  Doug is a creative spirit and after Creedence broke up in the early 70's Doug put together a whole lot of music, collaborating with various musicians over the years, starting with his first solo album Cosmo in 1972 to his latest offering For all the money in the world with Steve Wright of the Greg Kihn Band . This album while released earlier this year was written and recored in the 1980's and follows up an ealirer solo album Magic Window that came out in 2020. I enjoyed talking to Doug, about the vision for the album the production, and the dream team that worked on this album which included the legendary Joe Satriani.   Another key project that Doug was a part of , was CC revisited a band he put together with his old pal and bass player for Creedence Stu Cook.  We journeyed back in time and  Doug reflected on the Creedence's musical legacy, music in the60's the early days of the band playing at Woodstock and a. Our good friend, Doug Clifford joins Jamie again this week to discuss a new release from Cosmo's Vault, Clifford-Wright. In the years following his success in Creedence Clearwater Revival, Doug started producing other artists. One of the bands that he assembled in those years consisted of Doug on drums and Steve Wright on bass from The Greg Kihn Band, and a stable of great guitarists including Greg Douglass (Steve Miller Band), Jimmy Lyon (Eddie Money) and a young gun named Joe Satriani before he was a solo artist. Doug and Steve wrote 11 great songs and rounded out their recording lineup with keyboard players Tim Gorman (The Who) and Pat Mosca (Greg Kihn Band) and Keith England on vocals. After the songs were recorded, Doug put them away in his vault until now. This record is a great example of power pop and rock and should be in everyone's library. The first single, For All The Money In The World, hit the street on August 27th. On episode 135, Doug discusses this project/album, the other contents of his vault, his label, Cliffsong Records, and a lot more. Doug has been a champion of The Drum Shuffle since our humble beginnings and he is such a wealth of musical knowledge for the world. Doug “Cosmo” Clifford played drums for legendary rockers Creedence Clearwater Revival, who's time on top was brief, only about two years. After the band disbanded, Clifford worked on a variety of projects, assembling various groups of musicians and recording albums...a lot of these have sat in his personal archives for years. Now that he's retired from the road, Clifford has started delving into these tapes, which he calls Cosmo's Vault. The latest release is For All the Money in the World, a teaming between him and Steve Wright, who played bass for the Greg Kihn Band. In mid-1968 a band of four dedicated musicians from El Cerrito, California skyrocketed to fame with their debut single “Suzie Q.” It took 10 years of gigging to get there, but by the time “Suzie Q” peaked at #11 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR) was an unstoppable force in rock'n'roll. Over the next 2 years they released 11 million-selling hit singles and 5 studio albums, they toured the world as headliners, including an appearance at Woodstock in 1969, and were ultimately inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame in 1993. In the decades that followed CCR's 2 year reign as the #1 band in the world, Creedence drummer Doug “Cosmo” Clifford focused his creative energy on producing album projects. His concept was to assemble a top shelf mix of players, write an album's worth of original songs, then record, mix and master each album. When a project was completed, the masters were archived and safely stored in Cosmo's Vault until the time was right to release them. Fast forward to 2021 and Cosmo has retrieved those masters and will be releasing them one album at a time on his own label, Cliffsong Records. The first release will be For All The Money In The World by Clifford / Wright. As was the case with Creedence, the core members of Clifford / Wright are from El Cerrito, California, each having earned Gold records over the years for playing on million-selling hits. Cosmo's original idea was to build the band around a solid rhythm section, and his first choice for a bass player was his old pal Steve Wright from the Greg Kihn Band. Cosmo and Steve not only had great chemistry as a rhythm section, they also clicked as a songwriting team, crafting well over a dozen original songs for the album. Completing the Clifford / Wright lineup were featured guitarists Greg Douglass (Steve Miller Band), Jimmy Lyon (Eddie Money) and Joe Satriani, plus keyboard players Tim Gorman (The Who) and Pat Mosca (Greg Kihn Band). After holding auditions for a lead vocalist, Keith England was selected as a perfect fit for the Clifford / Wright songs. With the band in place, recording sessions were booked in various studios in the San Francisco Bay area. The final result is the 11-song album For All The Money In The World by Clifford / Wright, direct from Cosmo's Vault.

New York native Joe Satriani had previously recorded an album in 1986, and ran up some credit card credit card debt in the process.  He paid off the debt from his earnings as a member of the Greg Kihn Band, but stayed on a low budget of $13,000 when he recorded his second and all-instrumental studio album, Surfing with the Alien.  This would be a break-out album for the guitar virtuoso.Satriani began playing guitar at age 14 under the inspiration of Jimi Hendrix.  Supposedly he heard of Hendrix's death at football practice, and announced he was quitting the sport to become a guitarist.  Satriani taught guitar to a number of students including Kirk Hammett of Metallica, David Bryson of the Counting Crows, and perhaps most notably fellow Carle Place High School alumni Steve Vai.This album relied on drum machines rather heavily, with percussionist Jeff Campitelli recording overdubs to flesh out the pieces.  Satriani played on two Kramer Pacer guitars and a Stratocaster guitar for the album, and would change the pickups to get different sounds.  The cover artwork was originally a picture of Marvel Comics' Silver Surfer until the price for renewal grew too hefty in 2018, at which time it was replaced with a silver guitar.Satriani has been a "hired gun" with a number of groups including Alice Cooper, Blue Oyster Cult, Deep Purple, the Yardbirds, and even Spinal Tap for their 1992 album.  He is also known for his work with the supergroup Chickenfoot, and for founding the G3 tour. Surfing with the AlienThis is the first and title track to the album.  The title popped into Satriani's head when he was thinking about what it would sound like if aliens came to Earth but were just looking for fun rather than global conquest.Always with Me, Always with YouThis is the most popular track off the album.  Joe Satriani wrote it as a love song for his wife, Rubina, and it is an instrumental power ballad.CirclesIf you haven't heard the album as a whole, you likely have not heard this deeper cut.  It has a slow start and finish, with a hard thrashing center.  It will give you a good sense for Satriani's playing style when using a slower tempo.  Satch BoogieSatriani composed this hard rocking song after a car accident in 1986 when he was in a neck brace and on pain medication.  Supposedly the concept was about what it would sound like if there was a horn section trying to play with Gene Krupa (the jazz drummer on "Sing, Sing, Sing") while his drum set was falling down a flight of stairs.  This is the only track which uses live percussion. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Sweet Little Sixteen  by Chuck Berry (from the motion picture Hail! Hail! Rock 'n' Roll)This documentary film featured two of Chuck Berry's 1986 concerts in celebration of his 60th birthday. STAFF PICKS:It's A Sin by Pet Shop BoysRob's synth-heavy staff pick is from the English duo of Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe, known as the Pet Shop Boys.  The song off their second album covers the struggle of a gay person in a Catholic environment.  It was intended as a campy song, but perhaps had more meaning than the duo intended.Paper In Fire by John MellencampBrian brings us back to small town USA with a hit off Mellencamp's album Lonesome Jubilee.  The first single released peaked at number 9 in October 1987.  Paper in fire is a reference to Hell from the Bible, taken from the book of Ecclesiastes 7:5-6.  Big Generator by YesAll roads lead to Wayne's staff pick, and the title track from the Yes album.  The Big Generator album followed their immensely successful album 90125, and the lyrics from this song reflects the band's take on the pressure the record labels received to continue producing pop hits.  "Praise, oh praise this anthem generator."I Don't Mind at All by Bourgeois TaggBruce's staff pick is a one-hit wonder from the duet Brent Bourgeois (keyboards, vocals) and Larry Tagg (bass, vocals).  This song is off their second album Yoyo, which was produced by Todd Rundgren.  This is their biggest hit, which peaked at number 38 on the Billboard Hot 100. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Blues For Salvador by Carlos SantanaThis instrumental is from another long-running guitar virtuoso who would remain an active force in the rock world for decades.  This is the title track from Carlos Santana's album.

Y en la hora extra discos que rodaban en 1981: Eric Clapton, Georges Harrison, Gary Us Bonds, Greg Kihn Band, The Replacements, The Church, Shena Easton, Kim Wilde, Landscape, Duran Duran, Heaven 17, Echo and the Bunnymen y Simple Minds. Steve Cooper talks with musician Robert Berry. Robert came into the spotlight in 1988, when he teamed with Keith Emerson and Carl Palmer (of Emerson, Lake & Palmer fame) and formed the band 3. They recorded one album, The Power of Three and disbanded in 1989 after a successful tour supporting the album. In 2015, him and Emerson signed with Frontier Records and began working on a follow-up to The Power of Three as 3.2. The project was shelved following Emerson's death in March 2016, but Robert would finish the project himself and release it in 2018 under the 3.2 moniker as The Rules Have changed. He has also played in bands such as Hush, Alliance and Ambrosia and currently is with the Greg Kihn Band.

In 1981, he earned his first bona-fide hit on The Billboard Hot 100 with the # 15 single, The Breakup Song (They Don't Write Em'), from the Rockihnroll album. He continued in a more commercial vein through the 1980s with a series of pun-titled albums: Kihntinued (1982), Kihnspiracy (1983), Kihntageous (1984), and Citizen Kihn (1985). His biggest hit was Jeopardy, which reached # 2 Pop, in 1983. The groundbreaking video became an MTV favorite and was spoofed by Weird Al Yankovic as I Lost on Jeopardy. Over his career he has released 17 albums, the latest being Rekihndled in 2017 and the band still tours to this day. From 1996 to 2012 he was a morning radio host for the classic station KUFX in San Francisco and he has also published 6 novels.

Robert Berry has managed to survive in the treacherous minefield that is the music business and flourished as a performer, songwriter and producer. It seems he's done it all. While he may be best known as the vocalist/bass player in the ELP spinoff, 3, with Keith Emerson and Carl Palmer, Berry impressive list of credits include a stint fronting Ambrosia, and long running affiliations with Alliance, December People, and the Greg Kihn Band. Berry has released 5 solo albums, contributed to a number of high-profile tribute albums and has an impressive track record in the studio. He grew up in a musical family in what would become Northern California’s Silicon Valley. It didn’t take long before he appropriated a Vox Continental organ from his father’s music store. By the time he was a freshman in high school, his group had released a single that went on to become a regional favorite. Although he denies it, according to his school mates, Berry was known as his school’s first full-fledged rock star. His bands became solid fixtures on the Bay Area college and club circuit, where they worked constantly. It was during this period that his interest in multi-track recording blossomed. Legend has it, Berry somehow finagled the very first Teac four-track recorder to arrive in the valley. It wasn’t long before he had written and recorded an experimental twenty-two song ‘rock opera’. As his quest for knowledge grew he managed to snag a part-time position as ‘assistant everything’ person at a busy San Jose recording studio. By the time he was a senior in high school he had acquired a reputation as a solid performer and in-demand studio musician. 2016 was a big year for Robert Berry as he met with pal Keith Emerson in Los Angeles to discuss a 30th anniversary release of the long awaited follow up to the debut 3 album. If that wasn’t enough, he co-wrote 11 all new songs, produced and played Rekihndled, the Greg Kihn Band's first studio album in over 20 years. The year 2017 was noteworthy for some major efforts. Early in the years, Berry, on bass and lead vocals joined with Terry Brock (GIANT, STRANGEWAYS) on lead vocals, Gary Pihl (BOSTON, SAMMY HAGAR, ALLIANCE) on guitar, and Matt Starr (ACE FREHLEY, MR. BIG) on drums, to form ALL 41. They release the band's debut album, "World's Best Hope". Simultaneously, he mounted a dedicated effort to complete his collaboration with Keith Emerson on the long awaited 3 follow up. That album, which took shape in 2016, was nearly shattered with the news of Keith Emerson tragic death. Ultimately and as a tribute to the friendship of Emerson and Berry, it somewhat painfully got back on track and is set for a summer of 2018 release date as 3.2 – The Rules Have Changed on Frontiers Music SRL. JULY of 1981 “Escape” by Journey Brian hosts this seventh album from JOURNEY — Escape, which catapulted the rock group into the stratosphere on the strength of Steve Perry's soaring vocals, Neal Schon's hook-laden guitar riffs, and newcomer Jonathan Cain's keyboards and songwriting. The album artwork featured a stylized scarab spaceship breaking out of a sphere. This album transitions from a straightforward hard rock vibe with "Keep on Runnin'" to a more mellow rock sound with Perry's well-known ballad "Open Arms." You just can't go wrong with this classic album. “Escape ” The title track from the album is fast-moving and features lots of high notes from Steve Perry. “Stone in Love” This track is one of many hits off this album, with a great bass counter melody, a fantastic guitar riff, and soaring harmonies. “Keep on Runnin'” Neal Schon's influence is clear in this heavier, faster, deeper cut. Perry's and Schon's relationship appears to have improved since Journey's Hall of Fame induction. “Still they Ride” Time for “couples skate.” Perry's vocal range is highlighted in this somewhat deeper cut ballad. The songs on this album are so popular that it is difficult to identify a deep cut. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK: “Believe it or Not” from the TV Show, “The Greatest American Hero” — by Joey Scarborough This is the theme from the TV show "The Greatest American Hero" by one of the greatest THEME SHOW writers of them all...Mike Post. STAFF PICKS: “Urgent” by Foreigner Bruce shares that the producer for this album had the band work with Thomas Dolby to specifically get the sound he wanted. Junior Walker was the Motown saxophone player on this song. “Riding with Angels” by Samson That familiar voice is Bruce Dickinson, better known as the front man for Iron Maiden — another of Wayne's favorites. Believe it or not, Russ Ballard originally wrote and performed this song. “Talk to Ya Later” by the Tubes Rob takes us through this cautionary tale about a one-night stand that...refuses to leave. Surprisingly, this song is co-written by David Foster. “The Breakup Song” by the Greg Kihn Band Off their fourth studio album "Rock Kihn Roll," this is a lament that the great breakup songs of the 60's aren't around. According to Brian, “they don't write 'em like that anymore.” INSTRUMENTAL / LAUGH TRACK: “Elvira” by the Oakridge Boys If you were around in 1981, you heard this song...and you probably enjoyed watching another, ELVIRA, mistress of the Dark. Check out that ultra-deep bass.

Robert Berry's resume includes work with The Greg Kihn Band, Ambrosia, Carl Palmer, Keith Emerson, Sammy Hagar, Jason Bonham, Steve Howe, members of Boston, and Night Ranger. He's passionate about his classic rock holiday band December People, which does community service through food bank donations. He owns and operates Sound Tek Studios in Campbell California, which dramatically expands his resume. He's a multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, performer, composer, arranger, recording engineer, and producer. He's also incredibly humble.  Our conversation touches on his music beginnings in San Jose, where a host of good people began to shape his life. The stories he shares are entertaining, sentimental and at times dramatic. His aforementioned humility really shines when he talks about his music education, a fascinating aspect of which is that he never thought of himself as a very good musician. He started on piano at a very young age, but recalls hating it. He majored to be a music teacher, one of his many backup plans. Although he learned many instruments in college, he doesn't reflect on his playing as all that proficient. He even goes so far as to say he was a lousy student. He reflects on his early years as a musician in a self-deprecating way, yet his stories reveal a pattern of others taking notice of his skills. As we spoke, I got a sense that it wasn't just his musicality that people took notice of; I suspect people took notice of his giving personality. At times, he comes across as a bit puzzled by it all, but acknowledges that he's always tried to deliver lots of value to his bandmates, clients and collaborators.  Today he'll tell you that he's all about the bass (and drums). He feels that if the bass and drums are tight, so goes everything else. His studio, which I hope to tour in my upcoming visit to the San Francisco Bay Area, is apparently a museum of instruments and recording technology. Among the collectables are 130 guitars, several amps, synthesizers, and other studio gadgetry. He attributes this collection to the fact that his dad owned a music store. That being said, Robert recalls that he had to pay for all the gear he acquired, despite the family music store. I think he appreciates it as part of his father's legacy. His dad made him work hard to pay for every piece of gear he acquired in those early years. I actually love this part of our conversation, because it's as though Robert doesn't realize to this day that his father had devised a clever motivation game in finding work that helped Robert earn almost enough money for that next piece of gear. At Sound Tek Studios, he does sessions Monday through Friday, arranging, producing, engineering, and playing parts for clients. He currently plays bass and sings with Greg Kihn, referring to him as the greatest and warmest person he's ever worked with. Together, Berry says, he and Kihn are filled with ideas. Our conversations about Kihn go pretty deep. Robert also shares his perspective on the music business and the many changes therein. In spite of it all, he seems genuinely happy doing what he does. Frankly, he sounds like he's on top of the world, catering to studio clients on a Monday through Friday daytime basis, and touring with Greg Kihn. It's clearly given him much appreciation for others who truly love what they do, something I found to be one of his endearing qualities. On the marketing side, Robert says (and I paraphrase), "You at least have to go out and act like you're better than anyone else. People want to live vicariously." I gathered this is something he's not personally comfortable doing, but that he admires those who do it well.  While he seems to think that a bit of this rock star narcissism would have served his career, he has clearly done quite well on a philosophy of giving more and serving others.
