Our episode features Jonathan Rundman, singer/songwriter from Minneapolis, who has a new Americana rock and roll album called "Waves". It is a fascinating and fun talk about 80's rock music, The Silos and the circle of friends that includes Cracker, The Vulgar Boatmen, and all they that have influenced.  If you dig 80s rock, his tales are what you might want. We talk about Bob Seger, the Rainmakers, The Hooters, and lots more. Born and raised in the isolated Finnish-American communities of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, and now based in Minneapolis, Rundman twists smart, cinematic, rock and roll lyrics, pop hooks, and garage attitude into his songs.   In addition to his solo career, Rundman tours and records as keyboardist for legendary New York City-based Americana/rock band The Silos. Rundman released his first new album in ten years in April, 2025 and is on a Midwest tour opening for the Silos. For the past decade he's been touring and recording with Walter Salas-Humara and The Silos.   The pre-release single from the album, “Elizabeth, Don't Waste Your Breath” was co-written with Salas-Humara and the second single from the record, “Let's Put On An Opera”, champions the artistic process, backed by vintage analog keyboards from the 1960s, including a Wurlitzer electric piano, a Vox Continental organ, and a real tape-powered Chamberlin. His producer, Ron Gomez, told Jonathan that he should record some interstitial music, instrumental pieces that weave in between the songs. "We talked about albums we liked, featuring these kinds of moments, like the acoustic transition after the song 'Nights of Mystery' by the Georgia Satellites. Referencing "Nights of Mystery"?  I'm all in. That's what I needed to hear. You like the Vulgar Boatmen? Del Fuegos? Replacements? Gear Daddies? Cracker? A little Elvis Costello and Rockpile? You need to be in too. www.rockpoandroll.com email the show: rockpoprollpodcast@gmail.com Instagram: @rockpopandroll

Bob Dylan finally reunited with the Band officially to record the Planet Waves album in 1974. The stories behind the creation of Planet Waves and the events of the subsequent tour will make you wish that time machines were a real thing.Planet Waves is just one of a number of albums marking its 50th anniversary here in 2024. As it happens, Ultimate Classic Rock recently collected 50 albums turning 50 this year and Jeff had an idea: Why don't we spend part of each month in 2024 discussing some of those albums at the 50-year mark? This conversation about Planet Waves is the first installment. Jeff and Matt welcome UCR's Allison Rapp to talk about a bunch of Bob-related subjects as they examine how Planet Waves came together. How does it stand up against the rest of Bob's catalog today? Was David Geffen ultimately the villain? Combine high energy country rock with classic country standards and you have the ingredients for a potent four-piece ensemble from Southern Ontario named Johnson's Creek.Featuring Glenn Code (lead vocals/guitars), Michael Lanteigne (lead guitar/backing vocals), Mike Crombez (bass guitar/backing vocals) and Jake Adams (drums/backing vocals), Johnson's Creek have been building a strong reputation for themselves since arriving on the scene in the summer of 2017 with the release of their debut single “Ocean Fantasy”. Since that point, Johnson's Creek released a self-titled, six-single EP in the Fall of 2019 which triggered strong airplay for their anthemic single"I Like It Dirty” which earned them key bookings with major concerts such as the Stars And Thunder Festival in Timmins, Mattawa Voyageur Days, back to back years at Rogers Hometown Hockey and numerous gigs throughout Northern and Southern Ontario. 2022 proved big for the band with the release of 2 singles, “Burn It Up” and “Tell Me Something Good” and notching 40+ performances throughout Canada including dates at the famed Cavendish Beach Music Festival in PEI, the Winkler Harvest Festival in Manitoba, 4 dates at The Canadian National Exhibition and a headlining spot Toronto's Legendary Horseshoe Tavern. Whether it's projecting their high-energy `Redneck Rock n Roll`, inspired by the likes of The Road Hammers and The Georgia Satellites or more classic standards influenced by Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard and Hank Williams, Johnson's Creek has the unique ability to appeal to a wide variety of country music demographics.

Vivid is the debut album from Living Colour, and it was a commercial and critical success, peaking at number 6 on the Billboard 200 album charts.  Vernon Reid formed Living Color in New York in 1984.  Reid is from England and used the British spelling of the band.  It was known as "Vernon Reid's Living Colour" for the first couple of years, and evolved through a number of band members and genres including jazz, punk, experimental rock, and funk. The lineup for the debut album was set by 1986, and consisted of Reid on guitars, Corey Clover on vocals, Muzz Skillings on bass, and Will Calhoun on drums.  The group settled on a hard rock to heavy metal approach to their music, though elements of funk and jazz remain.  They built their experience playing in New York's CBGB club where they built up a following, eventually including Rolling Stones front man Mick Jagger.  Living Colour is an all black band playing hard rock music, which is uncommon.  Vernon Reid pushed for acceptance of black musicians in alternative music genres, forming the Black Rock Coalition in 1985 to support development and exposure.  During a time when highly produced hair metal bands were common, Living Colour was refreshingly different.  The band entered the studios in December 2022 to record their seventh album.Bruce brings this group and their debut album to the podcast. Funny VibeThis track was performed in their earlier days and was reworked for the album with a harder rock sound.  It features Chuck D and Flava Flav from Public Enemy.  It is about racial stereotyping - something Vernon Reid had to deal with in the music industry when he's bringing an all-black group onto the rock scene.Cult of PersonalityThis is the song which really launched Living Colour into a worldwide phenomenon.  It hit number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Reid said it was essentially written in just one rehearsal session, and is the only song on the album written by all the band members.  The title comes from a report Nikita Khrushchev wrote in 1956 on Stalin called "On the Cult of Personality and Its Consequences."Open Letter (to a Landlord)A poet named Tracie Morris was part of the Black Rock Coalition, and Reid got her help on the lyrics for this song.  It is inspired by concern over the gentrification of the East Village in New York City, pushing out long term tenants and replacing them with "yuppies." Glamour BoysThe third single from the album is about men obsessed with high society.  Mick Jagger is on backing vocals.  Jagger came to know the band through working with bassist Doug Wimbush who would replace Skillings as bassist in 1992 in the band.  Jagger produced a couple of their demos. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Hippy Hippy Shake by the Georgia Satellites (from the motion picture "Cocktail")This cover appeared on the soundtrack to a movie featuring Tom Cruise flipping bottles of rum as a showman bartender in exotic Caribbean locales. STAFF PICKS:Tutti Frutti by Little RichardWayne does a little double dipping on the Entertainment track.  Little Richard's hit made its way back on the charts when it appeared on the "Cocktail" motion picture soundtrack.  The line "aw rooty" was a slang expression for "all right!"  Many rock and roll staples would be introduced in this song, including the loud volume, powerful vocal style, and distinctive rhythm.Nothin' But a Good Time  by PoisonAccording to Poison drummer Rikki Rockett, John's staff pick was written during a time the band was living in a downtown LA warehouse with no money, and getting fast food and going to the beach was a good time.  The song was written for the everyday person making it through the work week and just looking for a good time at the end of it all.Peek-a-Boo by Siouxsie & the Banshees Rob brings us a post-punk group with their breakthrough U.S. hit.  Featuring a looping brass part played in reverse and unusual instruments like the accordion, Vocalist Siouxsie Sioux added to the unusual nature of the song by using a different microphone for each line.  Peek-a-boo would reach number 53 on the Billboard Hot 100.Fast Car by Tracy ChapmanBruce's staff pick was originally released in April, but Chapman really moved up the charts after appearing at the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday tribute concert.  Stevie Wonder was supposed to be the surprise guest star, but when his keyboard hard disk went missing, Tracy Chapman was ushered back on stage in prime time with just a microphone and a guitar.  The song she performed was a sad, stark tale of a woman trapped in poverty, reminiscing about a time when she felt she could be someone. NOVELTY TRACK:Parents Just Don't Understand by DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh PrinceBefore becoming a film icon and celebrity, Will Smith got his start as the Fresh Prince.  This comedy rap did well on the charts in 1988.

Pat Todd has been called the most sincere rock and roll singer/songwriter on the planet.  His first group, the LA-based Lazy Cowgirls, called it quits in 2004 after nearly 25 years together. Pat Todd, raised in Indiana, formed a new band, the Rankoutsiders. In them, I hear Jason and The Scorchers, the Georgia Satellites in their prime, cowpunk, and gassed up the guitars with bang-bang-bang drums, all driven in 5th gear. How had I not heard of Pat Todd until 2022?  I have no idea.  But now I have and find a need to share it with my rock and roll compatriots.  So turn it up and let's rock together.  Maybe it's a new find for you too. Atlanta, Georgia's own The Georgia Satellites released their debut and self-titled album in 1986.  Dan Baird was their primary songwriter and lead vocalist on most songs.  Guitarist Rick Richards, bassist Rick Price, and dummer Mauro Magellan complete the band.  Originally formed as Keith and the Satellites in 1980, the band saw a number of personnel changes and a name change to The Georgia Satellites soon thereafter.  They honed their craft playing at a Buckhead bar called Hedgens on Monday nights. The Georgia Satellites signed with Elektra Records in 1986 and released this debut album to significant commercial success.  The single "Keep Your Hands To Yourself" saw significant airplay on MTV, and went to number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, denied the number 1 spot by Bon Jovi's "Livin' On a Prayer."  The band featured a southern rock sound with a boogie slant, and this debut would be certified Platinum by the RIAA.The Georgia Satellites would produce two albums of original material and a third with both new and re-released tracks after this debut, but would not see the popularity return to the level of this first album.  Dan Baird left the band in 1990 and the band went on hiatus for a few years, but the remaining members would return to touring by 1993 and still perform today.Wayne brings us this classic of southern rock. Railroad SteelThis track is the third single from the album.  It did not chart on the Billboard Hot 100 but made it to number 34 on the Billboard Rock Charts.  The lyrics are about a guy who is cold, but whose heart can be melted by a particular woman.Keep Your Hands To Yourself"She said, 'Don't hand me no lines, and keep your hands to yourself!'"  This is the big hit from the album, reaching number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.  It is about a woman that will not give in to a guys pleading until they get married.  "You see, I wanted her real bad and I was about to give in.  Oh, that's when she started talking about true love, started talking about sin."Battleship ChainsThough it didn't make the top 40, this was an entry into the Billboard Hot 100 at number 86.  It also features guitarist Rick Richards on lead vocals. This song was written by Terry Anderson and recorded by his band The Woods out of North Carolina.  The Georgia Satellites heard the band and recorded their own version.Red LightThis is a deep cut, and is a song about a woman who is angry at her partner.  "Got Van Halen wailin' on the stereo  eight track.  Watch out baby that's what I said.  There's a red light, road block, bridge out ahead." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Dentist! by Steve Martin (from the motion picture “Little Shop of Horrors”)This movie based on the musical of the same name starred Rick Moranis and a psychotic plant living off human blood.  Steve Martin has a cameo as a sadistic dentist. STAFF PICKS:Ship of Fools by World PartyRob starts off our staff picks with a British group which was basically a solo project for lead man Karl Wallinger.  While his band was a one-hit wonder, Wallinger collaborated with other artists like Sinead O'Connor and Robbie Williams, and was the musical director for the films “Clueless” and “Reality Bites.”  The concept of the lyrics is that there will be a price to pay from the way you are living today.  The Way It Is by Bruce Hornsby and the RangeBruce's staff pick is a piano driven soft rock song about civil rights and not getting complacent.  It hit number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.   "That's just the way it is - ah, but don't you believe them."Everybody Have Fun Tonight by Wang ChungBrian brings us a song originally conceived as a ballad, but adapted to a faster pace and dance orientation by producer Peter Wolf.  The self-referential verb "Wang Chung" is a nonsensical but catchy phrase.(I am) Superman by R.E.M.Wayne's staff pick is actually a cover song originally recorded by a band called The Clique.  Bassist Mike Mills sings lead on this song because Michael Stipe wasn't very enthusiastic about it.  When Stipe sings backup vocals in live performances, he holds his arms up and out as if he is Superman flying. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Walter's Theme by R.E.M.We wrap up this week's podcast with an instrumental track off R.E.M's album "Dead Letter Office."

I understand that many, if not most, people look at the deluge of box sets, reissues, and live albums as just more excuses how the record industry will suck any pennies they can get out of an artist. It’s a valid view. However, I live for this stuff. Sure, my main inspiration is new music, but if I love an artist I want everything. I want the live recordings. I want the demos and outtakes. I want that rare b-side.  Tonight’s show is sort of a new release episode, but it’s new “old” material. It’s the tunes from expanded editions of classic records by the likes of The Clash, The Muffs, Pavement, and The Lemonheads. It’s live tunes discovered in the vaults from The Rolling Stones,  T. Rex, and Georgia Satellites. There’s also great, previously unreleased material from our friends Jeremy Porter & The Tucos, and the great Rum Bar Records compilation of Cindy Lawson’s old band, The Clams. There is even a multi-disc set for a great 60s band, Betterdays, that initially only put out one single! I would love it if every listener bought at least one record I played on either of these shows. These great artists […]

Various combinations of singers, songwriters and entertainers.  But it's the ones that wear their art that get to us the most. The ones that don't know how not to tell the truth in their music and reveal the raw and ragged triumphs that in the end are more beautiful because of the honesty of the struggle. These are the Artists that get in our bones and shake loose our demons by slaying their own with chords and words. Artists like Johnny Cash, Janis Joplin…and Stevie Tombstone." Outlaw Magazine   After a chance meeting with Roy Acuff, Stevie (then a young man) was certain he would always be a musician. Georgia born relation of the legendary fiddler, Clayton McMichen, Stevie immersed himself in the world of rock and the underground music scene of the 80s in Atlanta, but never lost the twang of his childhood. Almost three decades later he has become an accomplished performer, songwriter and guitarist, as well as an integral the Atlanta and Austin Music Scenes at various points in time. He now hangs his hat in Western North Carolina.   In addition to his published works with his 1980s swampabilly band, The Tombstones, Stevie has released five solo albums and half a dozen music videos. The Tombstones song, Nobody, became a college radio anthem. The roots punk song about the Carolina Lights and was later recorded by rock icon Stiv Bator.   Tombstone's debut full length release, 730 AM, featured performances by members of Wilco, Jason and the Scorchers, The Bad Livers, and The Georgia Satellites, and offered tracks that peaked on the Satellite Radio charts. After several comps and EPs, his 2011 release, Greenwood, reintroduced Stevie to Americana and folk listeners with the autobiographical tale of his journey to Greenwood to mark the grave of then un-honored Robert Johnson.   Over the years, Tombstone's bandmates and co-conspirators have been a veritable who's who of underground and nationally recognized players. Priding himself in his ability to cross genres, he has also had the honor of sharing the bill with the likes of Leon Russell, The Stray Cats, Greg Allman, Willie Nelson, Drive By Truckers, Kevn Kinney, Johnny Bush, and The Ramones.   In addition to producing and writing for other artists, Stevie still performs over two hundred nights a year, enjoying a grassroots following that's kept him on the trail for the last three decades. His latest release, Raised on Roots a compilation of singles and EPs, is available now and enjoying growing airplay.

Georgia Satellites are owners of one fluke hit from their self-titled debut album - a Chuck Berry-ish throwback-for-the-80s radio.  One song amidst their bucket of barroom rockers.  Those songs don't come around Top 40 too often anymore.  The “Once Bitten, Twice Shy” or “Jealous Again” type of songs are outliers.  So is "Keep Your Hands to Yourself".  It rocketed all the way to #2 on the top 40 singles chart in early 1987.  Bon Jovi kept them out of the top spot with "Livin' on a Prayer". And why do I still think about the band?  They really weren't anything new.  But they did put together a flash of a career - though the band name lives on with guitarist Rick Richards - with some of the best dueling guitars of the 1980's. Again, we go back to the bar band label. It was an easy label to paste on them – to call the band an 80's version of the great 70s rockers, The Faces.  Hell, they even covered "Every Picture Tells a Story". They played rock and roll that was a blast of scraping guitars, big drums and a vibe that bridged the decades before the Black Crowes would make a similar move around 1990.  The Crowes ended up making a career last - off and on – for 25 years.  For the Georgia Satellites? They opened on a couple big tours, played a whole lot of bars and then splintered right around 1990. What is their legacy?  Why a podcast about a retro band than was not around long enough to have a second big hit?  That's what we dive into.  How the Georgia Satellites predated country radio rock that would come just a bit after their time, and end up as an influence for lots of bands - or at least make those bands believe there was a path to a crunching rock and roll career.  Bands like Cross Canadian Ragweed. The Bottle Rockets.  Blackberry Smoke. Singer Dan Baird went on to a solo career and formed a couple really good bands, including Dan Baird and Homemade Sin. One of their best tours was a triple bill in 1987 with Del Fuegos and Tom Petty. They also opened for Bob Seger in 1986 on his American Storm Tour for their first time on arena stage. Dan Baird has said that Bob made sure they had full house lights, house sound, everything the headliner would get. He knew what an opener needed.  He was one for years. Rolling Stone contributing editor Anthony DeCurtis talks about living in Atlanta in the early 1980s,  “The Satellites were like the city's house band.”  They made it into America's consciousness, at least for one song and a few years more for fans of the band.  They brought it live. Loud. Righteous. I say worth remembering one more time. They have a new - recorded in 1988 - live album out now that gives us a taste of what made them so good.  Lightnin' In A Bottle. Seems like a good time now to rewind and salute a band that was better than they ever got credit for.  Of course, if you saw them live, you knew.   I did, and I do. The state of Georgia has long been a hotbed of rock, rhythm and blues that has captured the attention of music lovers worldwide. Indeed, from the Allman Brothers to Gladys Knight & The Pips to Little Feat, from the B-52s to R.E.M., from OutKast to Widespread Panic, Gnarls Barkley to the Black Crowes, the Atlanta Rythym Section, Zac Brown, Drivin N Cryin and Dan Baird and his Georgia Satellites and the rap music scene is off the hook. Now, in the spirit of Georgia alt-country rockers Blackberry Smoke and the Drive-By Truckers, comes the promising Georgia Thunderbolts. The band is a hard-charging southern rock outfit hailing from the bustling metropolis of Rome, GA, located near the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. And the Thunderbolts bring a scorching signature style steeped in soulful southern swagger, blistering blues and raw rock. The band finds inspiration well-beyond its backyard, however, with influences ranging from Hank Williams to Neil Young, Ozzy Osbourne, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Black Stone Cherry and The Kentucky Headhunters among others. And between stints on the road –they are classic road warriors, like most young bands – the Thunderbolts just followed up its first EP, releasing the very strong full-length album “Can We Get a Witness” on October 15. We recently welcomed them into Gaslight Studios for a series of performances and great conversation on The Load Out. Enjoy!

SPYING Is A Big Deal. And yes, Spying Did Occur. So says Attorney General William Barr, who blew away the Beltway during two days of testimony this week. Panic sets in for the Deep State, as official Washington begins to "grasp the magnitude" of what has just transpired. An historic shift in momentum for America's Biggest Political Scandal. We review AG Barr's stated determination to uncover the origins of SpyGate, which he says may involve multiple intelligence agencies. Was all the "spying" adequately predicated? Further, AG Barr describes his puzzlement that Obama's DOJ failed to offer Trump a "defensive briefing" for the alleged Russian infiltration of his campaign. Did the "upper echelons" of the FBI make some bad decisions? The wheels are turning. AG Barr exceeding expectations, and Inspector General Horowitz appears to be concluding his investigation into FISA abuse. MSM having visions of catastrophe, having definitively blown their credibility, wounds salted by losing out to the man they've devoted their lives and sacred honor to overthrowing. Meanwhile, Devin Nunes stays on offense. Might Republicans ultimately find that contagious? Plus, our notes on Red Flag overreach in Colorado. Enough of the Timid Contrasts. Colorado Republicans need to start leading with a sense of PURPOSE, on the larger issues that motivate Republican Voters. It would be helpful if the CO GOP Establishment could understand that Donald Trump SAVED the Republican Party back in 2016 -- saved it from the losing ways of the Bushes, Romney, McCain and Paul Ryan -- while teaching conservatives how to fight back and WIN. If key Republicans and their donors continue to overlook this lesson in reality, they do so at their own peril. It's well past time to unite the party. Meanwhile, CNN's boorish Jim Acosta finally gets his "hard pass" pulled to WH press conferences. Deranged Antifa Democrats attempt a home invasion of Fox News host Tucker Carlson. Still more Leftist political violence, and still winked at by the Leftist MSM. Didn't Hillary promise they'd start being more "civil"? Conrad Black writes that "Trump is blessed with his enemies." Preliminary notes on the resignation of AG Jeff Sessions and the arrival of AAG Matthew Whitaker. Also, we discuss the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War. French Prime Minister Macron blames "nationalism" as the cause of that Unecessary War, but we prefer to blame the globalist "entangling alliances" of the era which managed to set Europe on fire. Plus, we celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Beatles White Album. The History of the Six Shooter Band

October 18 Cappy's, Buns, and Bow TiesThe band gets a rude awakening when Lee sees that the band's name on the Cappy's marquee for October 18 and 19. The band was practicing for the following week (the 25th). We work with the owner, and he ends up putting us on after a Male review called “California Hunks” (from Columbus Ohio). The band waits in the back as men are not allowed in the bar as a group of 70 or so women fondle and paw at the loincloth-wearing pieces of meat. Dave starts off the night on stage with his Ted Nugent imitation, “Mercy mercy, I've died and gone to heaven, I'm playin' to a bar full of horny woman.” This evokes a “Dave!?” from Kevin. The women were sloshed. We were even joined on stage by a drunken wench that the band affectionately referred to as Bambi. She had brown hair and weighed about 45 pounds. As she jumped up on stage and began to wiggle and jiggle, John gave her a “bump” and shot-putted her halfway across the stage. Dave joined John in using Bambi as a human ping pong ball. During Bubba Hyde, Dave was doing the famous James Brown arrangement. He went out and “bumped” with Bambi. As they boogied back to back, Dave realizes that if he moves too quick Bambi is gonna end up on the floor. When he finally maneuvers to get away, Dave feels an arm come over his shoulder as Bambi tires to keep him on the dance floor. Dave does a spin move and catapults himself back to the safe haven of the stage (Glad to get back with his life intact).Later during a break, Bambi helped herself to a microphone. At this point, Dave went up on stage and said enough is enough. Later Bambi would try to get a whole sentence out to explain that she want's us to sing “Bappy Hirthday.” Later John witnesses as Bambi's female traveling partner bites her tit on the dance floor. The owner explains that things were getting a little overheated in the parking lot.The band has a blast, but without a sound check, they don't sound as sharp as usual out front. Chucky works out the bugs, but the stage volume is too loud and again, the monitors are almost useless. Dave has an extremely hard time hearing his backup vocals. When he does hear them, they're pretty rough. The band performs 3 new songs. These were My Maria, Daddy's Money, and On a Good Night (show opener).Saturday has the band moving the board to a new spot. In the process, the band's sound clears up and it sounds awesome! The band turns down their stage volume, and the monitors are heard loud and clear. Unfortunately, it's sweetest day, and the crowd is beyond shy. The band is treated to the pleasure of asking someone to turn off the jukebox. Dave tries to get a giggle by insinuating that Madonna has a venereal disease and that's why she had a cesarean delivery of her child (he refrains from making a joke about finding missing super bowl rings). Unfortunately Ernie the DJ is short on CD's and asks the band to play a little longer sets. Hmm... the band enters the lovely land of improvisation on stage. They pull off a version of Boot-Scootin' Boogie that must have lasted almost 10 minutes. Kevin was like a quarterback calling plays at the line of scrimmage. As he announces “Extended version” in the middle of Watermelon Crawl. The band pulls a few songs off the “Left-over” list, and realize why most of them are on the list in the first place (they suck). Dave accidentally cuts Ain't nothin Wrong with the Radio in half as he puts the solo in the wrong place. However, in hindsight, this was probably a blessing. The band can't believe the dead quiet after each song. The band would hammer out the final chords of a song, end it with a thunderous crunch and then you would hear the chirping of crickets in the back corner of the bar.Dave receives a job offer to join a band that is playing out 2 times a month. I think they were called Southern Exposure or something. Anyway, he takes the guy's number just to be polite. He has no intention of leaving the band.During one break Dave accidentally steps in a puddle of drool that has formed around the soundboard as Chucky has his eye on a lovely brunette. As a slow song starts, Dave prods Chucky to “go for it,” and sure enough Chuck shoots and scores. Unfortunately, Chucky was too busy to running sound to apply the needed pressure to court this fine vixen, and she ended up sitting by another guy. Chucky definitely gets an “A” for effort.Even though the crowd was dead (they did come alive by the third set), the band has a lot of fun. The joy of making up a set list on stage is interesting to say the least. The band fields requests to play some songs twice, so they do. The band was even joined by the Ernie the DJ for If Tomorrow Never Comes. Ernie wasn't bad at all, and puts a lot of emotion into his singing. The band is hounded to do some Lynard Skynard both nights and asks a patron what song they should do. He answers “Sweet Home Alabama.” He also wants to hear Mountain Music by the group ALABAMA. In all, it was a pretty fun gig. As John put it, “I had very low expectations coming in, and left very glad we did the gig.”October 23: Operation Steel Your Keyboard PlayerDave calls the guy from the band Southern Heart. Here's the scoop on them.• They've been apart for a while and are now reforming ( a little different from the “we're playing out twice a month” story at the bar).• The lead singer is the drummer. They think you should bring your kids to practice.• They play the Eagles, Seager, etc... (I'm sure they do Keep Your hands to Yourself by the Georgia Satellites).Dave sets it up with Randy to come over and play this Sunday. Dave explains how Six Shooter is a tight band, and he will not be leaving unless the singer (Kevin) moves to Montana (a possibility). Randy says he doesn't care. He just wants Dave to hear them. Dave figures, what can it hurt? While he's there he may just mention how Six Shooter is looking for a keyboardist.October 25: Kevin QuitsDave calls Kevin to see about getting his amp for the Southern Heart tryout thing. Dave is explaining how he wants to go check an Akron bar called “The Shamrock.” In doing so, Kevin feels he must tell Dave something.Kevin announces how lately things just haven't been much “fun.” He explains the constant worries about equipment failure, the strain of screaming over a stage volume that could destroy any pigeons flying in close proximity of the speakers, the negative attitude of John during the latest gig, the tardiness of some of the band members, and a general lack of drive is making the band situation a poor return on investment. Playing on stage is fun, but that's about the only thing that is anymore.Dave interrupts as he has been played the fool with this speech before. Only this time Kevin is not pulling his leg. Kevin hates to do this over the phone, but he doesn't want Dave pimping a singer-less band. Dave tries to use a salesman tactic to identify objections and asks, “If we fixed the sound system and worked on our stage volume (yata yata yata) would you stay? To this Kevin says “No, its just not fun.” According to the limited sales training Dave has received, this is supposed to reveal that their is another objection that has not been voiced. Hmmmmm....While Dave will miss singing with Kevin. Dave tends to agree with many of Kevin's points. The band has been a disappointment in some ways. We've never been too efficient in learning songs. It will be very strange to be in this band without Kevin. Dave doesn't put too much effort in trying to talk Kevin out of his decision. Dave knows that Kevin wouldn't say this without putting some thought into it.Upon hanging up the phone Dave is not sure how to feel. He can't be mad at Kevin. As a friend, Dave wouldn't want Kevin to do something he no longer enjoyed. In a selfish way, Dave is not happy about being put in the situation of finding a replacement. It's very strange. John and Dave had discussed this earlier in the week at lunch. Apparently ,John had picked up a vibe from Kevin. John announced that if Kevin ever left, he'd just call his buddy Dan (whom he explains is a real pain to work with at times) and form his old rock band. Dave isn't really big on the idea. Without being an egomaniac, Dave feels he is talented enough to hold down the role of lead guitarist. Consequently, a band with Dan would probably not include Dave.Kevin is going to wait to tell John, so Dave can't call John and say “Holy shit Kevin quit!” Dave ponders the thought of joining a blues band (something he's always wanted to front). Dave isn't really worried. He'll examine his options, and choose the best one.

Luke woke up with a pit in his stomach today and realized that Summer is truly, truly over for a long, long time. This naturally leads to an examination of the musical works of The Fabulous Thunder Birds and The Georgia Satellites. Also, America found an unexpected hero during last night's presidential debate. And, in No Point Conversion, Luke and Andrew discuss a particularly depressing Browns game.
