I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” Psalm 68:19 – “Praise the Lord; praise God our savior! For each day he carries us in his arms.” Matthew 11:28 -- “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Hebrews 4:14-16 – “Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God's throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”
When the unexpected circumstances of life catch us by surprise, it's easy to morph into “go-mode” - an analogy today's storyteller knows all too well. Allyson Mouron, from our community group in Mountain Brook, Alabama, shares her journey of faith and trust in Jesus as she struggled with infertility and then the sudden loss of both her father and her best friend. Through brokenness, hardship, and pain, Allyson reminds us the importance of learning to let go of control and find rest in surrendering to the One Who controls it all. IN THIS EPISODE, YOU WILL LEARN: - The safest and easiest place to be is a place of surrender. - Rest and peace are found in refocusing your mind. - You are called to only do two things - love God and love others. Send us a textThe age-old theological tension between God's sovereignty and human responsibility continues to challenge believers today. Does Reformed theology turn humans into robots? Does free will exist in a meaningful way? What does Jesus really mean when He invites the weary to come to Him?This thought-provoking episode dives deep into the heart of Reformed theology and its approach to salvation, tackling the misconceptions that often surround Calvinistic beliefs. We explore how every Protestant's understanding of salvation inevitably aligns with either Arminian or Calvinistic frameworks—whether they acknowledge these theological roots or not.The conversation takes a fascinating turn when we examine what truly determines our choices. While many celebrate the notion that "God loves us so much that He gave us free will," Scripture never makes such a claim. Instead, the Bible consistently points to God's love being demonstrated through the gift of His Son. We discover how our nature—not abstract free will—determines what we choose, and why this understanding is crucial for grasping how salvation works.Through a careful examination of Matthew 11:28-30, we unpack Jesus' profound invitation: "Come to me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." This passage beautifully illustrates the harmony between divine calling and human response. Christ commands us to come while simultaneously being the one who enables that coming through the gift of a new heart. For those wrestling with questions of choice, predestination, and God's sovereignty, this episode offers biblical clarity without compromising the mystery. You'll gain a deeper appreciation for the miracle of salvation—how God sovereignly works while we genuinely and willingly respond to His grace.Join us as we discover why Christ's yoke is truly easy and His burden genuinely light—not because we have innate ability to bear it, but because He provides everything necessary for us to come and find the rest our souls desperately need.Support the show
Have you ever woken up from a long night of sleep and still felt tired?According to the Mayo Clinic, the recommended amount of sleep for a healthy adult is at least seven hours a night. But even getting enough sleep isn't enough to be fully rested. As parents, we can quickly become overburdened, overwhelmed, exhausted, discouraged, and restless.Let's take Jesus up on his invitation in Matthew 11:28-30:“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”Practice resting in Him. And teach your son to do the same! For more encouragement and parenting advice, visit Trail Life USA or RaisingGodlyBoys.com.

In a world that prizes hustle and constant productivity, breaking the habit of hurry can seem far-fetched. Yet we still try to achieve it with life hacks to get more sleep and increase energy. However, self-help strategies are not the solution to our exhaustion problem. Today, Eryn Lynum joins me to talk about what it looks like to move away from the hurry and toward the rest that God has for us. This episode will be balm for your soul! What is important here is that we approach our thought world with compassion, curiosity, and creativity, a bit of humor, and a lot of prayer. It is like a cluster of screaming children clustered around our heart where God is dwelling. Think about a playground with kids out of control. It's hard to get to the center, to the ground, to the inner room where God is dwelling when we are deflected by so many interests, fears, desires, and demands. In this meditation we experience the rest of our inner world that only Jesus and his compassion can bring us.
What if rest wasn't a reward for finishing your to-do list, but a rhythm woven into creation itself? In today's fast-paced culture, biblical rest can feel elusive—especially for homeschooling families juggling responsibilities and expectations. But as Eryn Lynum shared in our recent conversation, true rest is not about doing less, but about being rooted in God's presence and design. Are you longing for slower homeschool days, a more peaceful heart, or a deeper understanding of Sabbath? Today's Homeschool Conversation explores the patterns of rest found in Scripture, creation, and daily life and how you can bring those rhythms into your home today.Find show notes and full transcript here: https://www.humilityanddoxology.com/finding-rest-in-a-restless-worldEryn's books hereWhile you're here, would you take a minute to leave a rating and review in your podcast app? Text Monique directly! Share thoughts, feels or feedback! Are you feeling overwhelmed and overworked? In our latest episode, Monique explores the transformative power of rest and how it can revolutionize your productivity.Drawing inspiration from a recent gathering of high-achieving Black women, she addresses the overwhelming exhaustion that often accompanies leadership roles, motherhood, and societal pressures. Monique also introduces seven actionable steps to help us combat overwhelm and create meaningful space in our lives. From fostering community support to establishing clear priorities and making time visible, she provides a roadmap for reclaiming control over our schedules.Tune in now to discover how rest can be your greatest ally in achieving your goals!GEMS DROPPED"We point to time management just because it is a buzz phrase for when things start to feel out of whack, when your focus is too scattered and spread. You look back over a day or a month and think: I was busy and I know I got some things done, but what just happened? And why do I feel like nothing is getting done although I'm doing all of the things? What this actually ends up boiling down to is less about time management and more about the courage to actually stop everything. An aggressive stop can feel impossible. It can feel indulgent.”"With growth comes breaking. When something new is born, something else has to die. And taking account of that and anticipating it ahead of time, before you're too broken to pull yourself back together. That's a tough practice."“For my women of color and moms, the courage to stop everything feels like we're taking something away from someone else. To stop for ourselves feels like theft. To rest can feel spoiled, privileged, or entitled—but that belief is cultural conditioning. We've been trained to demonize the part of us that wants to rest, that needs a break. If you're not producing, then who are you? What are you worth? That lie holds us back. What I've discovered is the less I do, the more I get done. And I want to offer that to you today. The less you do, the more you can get done. ”“Stopping for yourself is not selfish—it's strategy. Build a practice that includes rest, not as a reward, but as part of the process."“When we give ourselves away, we give our energy and our time away for other people to control, for other people to tell us what we can and should do with our time and our energy. There's a cost. And you're probably suffering that cost if this is the existence that you're in right now where you're not creating aggressive space for yourself.”“Whether you work for yourself or you work for someone else, it's incredibly important to create sacred space for yourself and to do so as aggressively as you possibly can and to hold it firm. Do not let others in. Not only can you not let other people onto your calendar, you can't let your little productivity self in either. Focus on what you need and what those priorities are and let it flow.”STAY IN TOUCHCome and follow me on Instagram @moniquershields and I would love your feedback so send an email to ambition@moniquershields.com.
Summary This bonus recording is of Kathy Young Deegan reading of 'Blessing for When the Road is Long' by Kate Bowler. It's a spiritual meditation about finding strength in moments of weakness and exhaustion. The piece incorporates biblical references from Jeremiah 6:16 and Isaiah 41, focusing on themes of spiritual guidance, divine support, and finding rest in moments of complete vulnerability. Highlights Introduction and Opening Prayer The opening sets a tone of vulnerability and spiritual seeking as Kathy Young Deegan introduces the blessing's title and author. Biblical Guidance and Blessing of Weakness Kathy recites Jeremiah 6:16, emphasizing the importance of seeking ancient paths and divine guidance. She then offers blessings for those who must acknowledge their weakness and surrender their burdens, suggesting that simply existing is enough in moments of struggle. Finding Rest in Stillness The blessing describes a profound moment of stillness that becomes a sacred space for divine presence, where rest and wholeness can be found. This section emphasizes the transformative power of complete surrender. Divine Strength in Human Weakness The reading concludes with Kathy sharing Isaiah 41's promise of divine support, highlighting the paradoxical truth that God's strength becomes most evident at the point of human weakness.
For many of us, fun is something that became more elusive as we got older. We were so involved in making sure our children and our spouses were doing well, that they were learning and growing and having fun, that our own fun often got put on the back burner. And yet, having fun and engaging in play is an important part of our mental and emotional health and is also super important to our relationships. I recently discovered that I had some work to do around play, and it's helping me to feel more complete, whole and happy. What about you? Where are you at in figuring out fun? Here are some questions to consider: What are you doing, just for you, that is fun? What do you do that energizes you? What are you doing that you lose track of time doing? What are you doing that feels productive and meaningful? If you have a partner, what are you doing with them that is fun? What do the two of you do that energizes you, that feels productive and meaningful, and that you lose track of time doing? How can you add more play into your engagement with your partner? How can you enjoy being with them more? Thanks for listening! Want to learn more about this concept? In Matthew 11:29-30, Jesus invites the weary to take His yoke, symbolizing a partnership that offers rest rather than burden. Unlike rigid religious demands, His gentle guidance and grace bring inner peace. The reflection encourages surrendering heavy burdens to Jesus, embracing His strength, and finding renewal in faith.
In Week 1 of our series "Finished," Pastor Matt begins his journey as the new lead pastor at Integrity Church by exploring the concept of true rest in the finished work of Jesus. Drawing from Hebrews 4:9-16, 2 Corinthians 5:21, and Exodus 31:12, we discover that while our hearts are restless, Jesus offers a rest that goes beyond mere relaxation. Through repentance and surrender, we can experience the gift of rest that only Jesus can provide. Jeff Zaugg and Rob Porter sit down with Jay Heck for a powerful, three-way conversation on fatherhood. In Part 1, they dive into the tension between being a provider and still embracing curiosity, adventure, and childlike wonder. They also unpack the unique triune relationship between a father, God, and his child. Key Takeaway Are you approaching life like an orphan or like a son whose father is going to come through for him even if he makes a mistake? Slowing down can help you navigate the tension between being a provider and embracing curiosity, wonder, and creativity. God uses your trials to bring wholeness, restoration, and healing. You don't have to exhaust yourself to allow God to do a work in you. Instead of carrying the burden of fatherhood alone, realize that you are ultimately raising God's child, and He will be there to help you. Jay Heck & Rob Porter Jay Heck is the founder and director of Being Songs, a ministry helping men discover that authentic, fearless, God-designed manhood begins by being a son. He and his wife, Heather, have two young adult children. Rob Porter lives in New Zealand with his wife and two kids. He leads Let's Keep Rising, a ministry that crafts adventures, events, and resources that meet men where they are and help them experience restoration in the most critical relationships they have, beginning with God Key Quotes 14:49- "I want to learn from it. I want to patch things up where there's been a rupture and let's keep going. And that has produced so much fruit. Growing up as a kid, I came out of childhood with a fear of a lack of connection, a lack of attachment with my children. So I think out of the pain and out of the crucible of our past, we have the opportunity to have a glorious future if we dig into God and say, help redeem what my experience was." 47:35 - "What if, in fact, we begin operating under the paradigm that God is the Father, which means that all provision actually comes from Him. All protection actually comes from Him. The plan for my child's life that I feel like is so on me to help them navigate, what if God, like it says in Scripture, already has all the days numbered for them before one of them came to be? What if He already knows their nature, their goodness? What if He already knows what He's been training them for, what they're learning in the present moment, and He already knows, I've got all this stuff that I need to them and father them through for them to become what I created. What that means is that I can get in the way. If I take that posture that I'm the dad, I can so much be the wall and the obstacle between God and my child. If I can, if we can begin looking at it where God is the Father will, and then we've got this interchangeable relationship, I can be His child and God's going to use my son or my daughter to help me lean on Him." In this episode, Alex discusses the importance of family togetherness and the Fourth and Fifth Commandments from his backyard gym. He shares how House Church began with the vision of families worshiping together rather than being separated into different rooms. He explains the three aspects of Sabbath: rhythm (establishing healthy patterns), rejuvenation (spiritual and physical restoration), and rest (embracing God's grace without working for salvation). Alex connects the Sabbath to the commandment to honor parents, emphasizing that our first relationship with father and mother shapes all future relationships. He concludes that a right relationship with God through Christ enables us to heal other relationships and truly embrace Sabbath rest.
