Y'allllll! Laura and I are so, so excited to be putting this episode out into the world. The minute we cut recording on this interview, we scooted up our entire production timeline by two months so y'all could have THIS episode in your ears. An artist, musician, lyrical storyteller, and true Milwaukee legend, The Fader describes WebsterX's music as "a personal dive into the rapper's psyche". One of the most successful Milwaukee based musicians, WebsterX was awarded Solo Artist of the Year by Radio Milwaukee in 2016, and his album "Daymares" was voted album of the year the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel in 2017. Nationally, he's contributed music for a Super Bowl ad, gotten signed to Vic Mensa's prior label, opened for Lil Yachty, and been featured in Entertainment Weekly, NPR, Pitchfork, TimeOut, Paper Magazine, and PBS among dozens of others. Alongside his solo success, WebsterX was a founding member of legendary Milwaukee-based music collective New Age Narcissism, co-founder of FreeSpace, a free, monthly, all-ages music showcase that invites Milwaukee's young creatives to come together and collaborate, and the organizer of Black is Beautiful's 3,000 rider strong bike ride in honor of mental health for people of color. On a personal level, WebsterX was one of Ryan's first friends in Milwaukee, and has been a long time inspiration and collaborator. This is a truly special episode with dozens of invaluable insights on the magic of being alive; including the power that rests in growing from our mistakes, harnessing alter egos, leveraging our platforms as creatives, marketing our magic, and where WebsterX is headed in the future.

WMSE is excited to be back once again at Club Garibaldi for our monthly Local/Live segments. On Tuesday, October 2, we welcome Milwaukee’s “retro”-electronic brother duo, Immortal Girlfriend for a live show and interview on-site and over the airwaves that YOU can join! Milwaukee’s Immortal Girlfriend is a fresh “retro” brother duo of William and Kevin Bush, who use atmospheric layering of electronics to wash over their melodic vocals. While the heart and soul of their sounds might be immersed in nostalgia, their sound is thoroughly modern and akin to chill + synth wave outfits like Washed Out, SURVIVE and Bonobo. In their spare creative time, Immortal Girlfriend also operate as producers out of a music studio in Lannon, laying down sounds for a growing list of Milwaukee artists, including WebsterX and Lex Allen. Although Immortal Girlfriend have been active on the scene for a brief time, the two go far back with their initial collaborative creations in their parents’ basement. Those creative days have produced their debut ‘Daybreak’ EP (released in 2017) and the single “Summer Dream” (released in May of this year). Immortal Girlfriend has graced the stage of Summerfest, Turner Hall Ballroom, Cactus Club and more, supporting diverse bills of music ranging from pop, soul, hip hop and electronic.

Simon Mustafa is a Milwaukee native emcee & entrepreneur. Simon was raised on Milwaukee’s north side, an area of the city that is often prone to violence, but also home to many of the city’s Hip Hop talent. Simon’s preparation for his journey into the world of Hip Hop began at a young age, when he found an interest in Hip Hop music, and later developed an interest in the written word and began writing his own thoughts and feelings. His main motivation for immersing himself in Hip Hop and writing was a need for his voice to be heard. Being the youngest of three children, he often felt he wasn’t being listened to, and Hip Hop gave him an opportunity to share his thoughts, feelings and opinions in a different way that allowed him more freedom than he felt he had previously. Simon Mustafa has been greatly influenced by other Midwest artist including Kanye West, Saba, IshDarr & WebsterX. He is part of a young, talented group of emcees that has made Milwaukee a hotbed for Hip Hop talent in recent years. Radio One Chicago airs every Thursday night from 6p cst on WLUW-FM, 88.7 or wluw.org

After signing to Chicago-based label Closed Sessions last year, Milwaukee rapper WebsterX has delivered his full-length debut, Daymares. The 15-track project is a deeply personal dive into the rapper’s psyche, as he wrestles with his doubts and fears, but, ultimately, provides glimmers of hope throughout. The cohesive effort centers around Milwaukee, and WebsterX enlists production from budding hometown talent like Q the Sun and oddCouple to help him soundtrack his journey up to this point. “Daymares is an accumulation of my life from years 2013-2017, the whole road of this WebsterX thing,” he explained to The FADER over email. “A rollercoaster of ups and downs that got me to this point, the insane experiences I’ve been able to be a part of with my friends by pursuing art, and my rise in my home city of Milwaukee, Wisconsin and beyond.” ~The Fader
