The bill will require the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) to work with the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection to create a plan and achieve export objectives by June 30, 2026. “Wisconsin’s agricultural exports are the backbone of our second largest industry. I’m glad to see that Governor Evers recognizes the importance of dairy, meat, fish and cheese, but his proposal falls short of recognizing all of Wisconsin’s top exports like cranberries, ginseng and bovine genetics,” said Kurtz. “Our proposal will promote all Wisconsin exports and make the important investment in tracking the market data so we can continue this effort beyond this budget.” The agricultural export program requires WEDC to spend $2.5 million on increasing the value of Wisconsin’s milk and other dairy products, $1.25 million to increase the value of Wisconsin meat exports and $1.25 million to increase the value of Wisconsin’s crop exports. He's worked with entrepreneurs his whole life, starting with working in the family's pizza franchise as a kid. Now he counsels startups and small businesses of all kinds through his role as Investment Technology Manager at the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation, or WEDC. We talk about what the WEDC does, and some of its programs.  In particular, we focus on the Qualified New Business Venture Tax Credit.  The program is not a direct subsidy to small businesses.  Instead, it's a tax credit for those who invest in small and startup tech businesses, thereby boosting small businesses indirectly.  Investors can include angel firms, venture capital firms, family offices, or high net worth individuals. Joey talks about how the program has grown and helped hundreds of small Wisconsin companies.  And for those not in Wisconsin, Joey assures me that many (if not most) other states have similar programs. Take a listen by clicking on the arrow to the left!  You can also learn more about the program here.  You can also learn more about other Wisconsin resources to help entrepreneurs by listening to this podcast.

The Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) says financial woes related to lost business because of the COVID-19 pandemic are deepening for some business sectors. The organization says tens of thousands of firms are seeking assistance. WEDC secretary and CEO Missy Hughes told the agency’s board Tuesday that after a bad economic hit during the spring, restaurants saw some improvements during the summer. "We're seeing that activity really die off now and I'm just not sure without additional federal assistance that these restaurants can really survive,” Hughes said. She added that many hotels are not doing well, either. Hughes said the state is trying to monitor the financial health of many firms. "If you look at a data point in January and say you had 100 businesses that are existing right now and the way we tracking that is simply whether they had one credit card transaction in a day. Now, we're seeing that number has reduced to 86.9, and it's on a trend line of going down,"
