Send us Fan MailBig BRAG week is here, and we've got a confession: we're jealous. We're thrilled our cycling team is rolling deep with 23 riders, but it's still strange not having our own gear spread across the floor and our bikes half-packed for travel. That tension sparks a bigger conversation about what a multi-day bike ride really is when you strip away the stats. For us, BRAG isn't just a route, it's the anticipation, the shuttle chatter, the packing tricks, the “please let my bike go back together” prayers, and the way a cycling community can feel like summer camp for grown-ups.We also get real about why riding on a team makes everything better, even when people branch out into their own crews. The point isn't whose jersey you wear, it's showing up together, swapping stories, and keeping the stoke alive across the whole event. Along the way we share the small details we love, from social media updates and logistics talk to the inside-baseball humor that only cyclists appreciate, like how many “extra” screws are acceptable after rebuilding your bike (three or less, obviously). Then we shift to what matters most: cycling safety. Keep the rubber side down, watch for tracks, stay alert on trails, and look out for pedestrians and other riders. We want everyone finishing the week healthy, proud, and already telling the best stories. We also have a challenge for the road: keep an eye out for the 2026 Guess the Route winner jersey, grab a photo if you spot it, and send it our way. And don't forget to explore, find a great meal, and yes, maybe even a winery, brewery, or distillery, because making memories is part of the ride.Listen, share this with a BRAG friend, and leave us a review if the show helps you feel more connected to the cycling life. Saskatchewan adventure travel writer Ashlyn George has co-authored Lonely Planet's Best Bike Rides Canada, highlighting cycling routes across Saskatchewan and Manitoba, from urban trails in Saskatoon to hidden gems in Prince Albert National Park and Moose Jaw's Wakamow Valley. The guide is designed to make cycling adventures more accessible and encourage more Canadians—to explore the outdoors by bike. She joins Evan to talk about the book and biking in Saskatchewan.
Faith and Val are joined in the studio today by Melanie Brown, a nurse from Adelaide who has taken her passion for vaccination and the history of infectious diseases in Australia on an epic ride from Adelaide to Sydney. We kick off with our bike moments before taking a look at some local news including a great (albeit depressing) long read from the ABC The long road to a bike friendly Australia. Serendipitously, Bicycle Network launched a statewide campaign yesterday (together with about 30 community groups including Yarra BUG) arguing for 5% of the Victorian Transport budget to be dedicated to funding Startegic Cycling Corridors. You can check out the campaign and take a look at the different ways to get involved. Discussion turns to Melanie's ride, exploring cemeteries between Adelaide and Sydney and the stories they hold of the impact of sometimes forgotten infectious diseases on the communities now buried there. In between cemeteries she has been enjoying the scenery and wildlife. You can follow her adventures as she continues her journey on Instagram @itsinfectiousWe finish up with a reminder that the next Critical Mass ride is coming up this Friday evening! Bring your lights, ALL of your lights!

Send us Fan MailYour house might be quieter than you think, and that can be dangerous. We share a real fire safety wake-up call that sent us home to twist detectors off the ceiling and read the fine print, because smoke detectors and CO alarms can expire and “smart” models are not always the safest choice if you're not tracking lifespan and sensors. If you've ever assumed your alarms will just work forever, this conversation is your sign to test, check dates, and replace what's overdue. We also keep it firmly in our cycling lane with Brag updates and community fun, including the official “Guess The Brag Route” winner jersey and a listener challenge to grab a photo if you spot the winner wearing it on the route. Listener Spotlight brings voice fan mail and a solved puzzle that lands us in Northampton, England, complete with tunnels, shoemaking history, and a Doctor Who connection. And because we're Cycling Men of Leisure, we zigzag into the good stuff: a genuinely surprised review of the Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium, a quick hit of bike infrastructure news from Seattle and New York City (including why protected bike lanes help everyone), and a pro cycling check-in with Giro d'Italia stats that sound almost impossible. We even circle back to the strange little “99 and 44/100% pure” Ivory Soap mystery and why 99 is a legendary number in sports. If you like laid-back cycling talk with real-world takeaways, subscribe, share the show with a riding buddy, and leave a review so more people can find us. Send us Fan MailA $125 Old Fashioned with fire, maple syrup, and bacon sounds like a joke until it shows up tableside and the whole bar starts watching. We kick things off with high-roller banter, travel timing headaches, and a reminder that our kind of road adventure is not about speed, it is about stories you will still be laughing about months later.Listener Spotlight takes a surprising turn to Palestine, Texas, a town that connects old-school American history with NASA-level balloon science. We talk about the Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility, why balloons are a real local point of pride, and the kind of baked-good stops that justify a detour, including a historic Texas bakery and a pie shop with a serious reputation. If you love quirky destinations, this segment is pure trip fuel. Then we shift gears into cycling safety after a disturbing road rage hit-and-run involving a group ride in Georgia. We break down the “cars own the road” attitude, why it puts cyclists and everyone else at risk, and how bike cameras can play a real role in accountability. From there, it gets personal with a plantar fasciitis update, bone spurs, orthotics, and what recovery looks like when you still want to stay active. We wrap with practical cycling trip packing tips that can save a weeklong ride: bring a derailleur hanger that fits your exact bike, pack detergent for emergency kit washes, track your bike and bags with AirTags or Tiles, and carry a power bank that keeps your phone, lights, computer, and radar alive. Mahmoud Mushtaha is a Palestinian journalist and researcher from Gaza, and the author of Sobrevivir al genocidio en Gaza (“Surviving the Genocide in Gaza”), his first book, published in Spanish. Send us Fan Mailhttps://www.buzzsprout.com/2054444/subscribeTornado sirens, Spanish artisanal cheese, and bourbon business headlines sound like three different shows, but that's a normal ride for us. We start with road-style storytelling and conference chaos, including the legendary tale of a family raising chickens and learning the hard way that “Jennifer” is not the sweet hen everyone expected. Then we bring the community into the conversation with Listener Spotlight, where you send guesses through our fan mail link and we read and play your messages. This round's clues lead straight to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and we break down the history, the beer references, and the pop-culture breadcrumbs that made so many of you nail it. We also welcome new listeners from around the world and talk about how these small touchpoints keep a cycling podcast feeling personal. From there, we shift into leisure news: a viral cycling story from Fort Scott, Kansas, a free bike share program, and bourbon whiskey updates that matter to anyone who likes a post-ride pour. We talk Four Roses, Sazerac, Brown-Forman, and what a cooling whiskey market could mean for prices and availability. Finally, we tell the full story of meeting a high-energy Spanish cheese maker at a reunion dinner, tasting sheep milk and goat milk cheeses, and getting evacuated to a bathroom twice as a tornado moves through the area, which leads to a surprisingly useful comparison between cheese aging and whiskey aging.Subscribe, share this with a riding buddy, and leave a review if you want to help the show grow. Imagine the possibilities if you stopped waiting until you felt ready and just committed to the idea you've had that could make a huge impact on other people's lives. If you've ever felt the pull to make a bigger difference but told yourself you didn't have enough time, money, or clarity to begin, this conversation will challenge that excuse in the best possible way. It's a powerful reminder that impact doesn't start when everything is figured out. It starts the moment you decide to take action. Today, I'm joined by my friend Matt King, CEO of GoBundance, who is preparing to ride his bike 2,000 miles from Mexico to Canada over 13 consecutive days! Why is he doing it? His goal is to raise over $1 million that will be given directly to people in overlooked communities along the route. No nonprofit overhead, just real people helping others in ways that will make a huge impact immediately. In our conversation, Matt shares why he committed to this mission before he knew exactly how it would come together, and how that decision set everything in motion. We talk about how great outcomes are achieved by taking action first, what it means to lead by example for your kids, and why so many of us spend our lives waiting for permission instead of trusting that we'll find the way once we begin. Above all else, Matt explains how seemingly small acts of kindness can make someone feel seen, loved, and heard, and how anyone can get started if they want to achieve something that's bigger than themselves. Send us Fan MailThe weird truth about modern life is that a robot might reject your resume, your phone might read you a transcript like closed captions, and a stranger in a restaurant might force you to hear their videos at full volume. We lean into all of it while keeping the Men of Leisure spirit intact and yes, there's a big announcement tucked inside. We start with a real update from the road, or at least from the studio: Adam is back upstairs with a new setup, better sound, and a space built for recording. Then we roll into Listener Spotlight with a town that literally had to move, plus a welcome to new listeners joining from Jordan. If you love travel trivia, small-town history, and the kind of details you only notice when you slow down, this stretch is for you. From there, we get practical. Michael shares where things stand on the job search and why he's rebuilding his resume and LinkedIn around ATS software and AI resume screening. We talk about learning the rules, adjusting strategy, and trying to “game the system” just enough to get a real human to see your application. Then we bring it home with show upgrades: fan mail now includes a 60-second voicemail option, we can reply to messages, chapters are getting better tools, transcripts are improving, and Road Adventures of Cycling Men of Leisure has been selected for Apple Video Podcasts. We close with rants that hit close to home: headphone etiquette in public, endless hold times, and phone trees that swear the options changed when they didn't. We share a Southern California trip that starts as a meaningful family vacation and “back to where it all began” birthday idea, then ends with airline chaos, shifting departure times, and that particular kind of exhaustion you only earn after living out of a suitcase across multiple hotels. It's part travel story, part reality check, and part reminder that being in a hurry is the fastest way to miss the point. From there, we jump into the kind of behind-the-scenes updates our community loves: the home studio build, acoustic panels that feel a little too effective, and Listener Spotlight where historical clues lead to a town with Revolutionary War naming roots, a Civil War cavalry note, and modern special operations ties. We also flag a practical issue for Apple Podcasts listeners about subscriptions and early releases, because if your downloads are getting buried, we want to hear about it and fix the feed behavior. Then we lean hard into leisure topics. We swap music nostalgia and argue for the return of forgotten styles like ragtime, sea shanties, polka, and barbershop quartet, with a detour into the strange moment when songs you remember vividly get called “oldies.” Finally, we get nerdy in the best way with weird alcohol measurements and drinking history: what a “jill” is, why “shot” has myths and real origins, and how terms like hogshead, tun, nip, and even “buttload” connect to actual volumes. If you like travel mishaps, cycling-adjacent storytelling, and smart laughs with real history sprinkled in, subscribe, share the episode with a friend, and leave us a review so more people can find the leisure their way. Cape Town's World Naked Bike Ride has been canceled for 2026 after organizers say authorities required participants to be fully clothed, effectively ending the event. The ride, held annually since 2008, had long operated through informal agreements despite legal ambiguity around public nudity. Its cancellation marks a significant shift, raising questions about how the city will approach protest, expression, and clothing-optional spaces moving forward. This is a public episode. Send a texthttps://www.buzzsprout.com/2054444/subscribeA fog‑shrouded descent into Detroit turns into two full‑throttle go‑arounds, a shrinking layover, and a dash through Atlanta that ends at a gate announcing an instant “on time.” That chaos becomes our doorway into a bigger theme: how slow travel—and the right kind of humor—can turn stress into stories worth keeping. We swap flight nerves for frontline lessons from public transit. De‑escalation is not theoretical when you sit behind the wheel; it is policy made real by posted rules, QR codes, and a system that backs the driver when words fail. From “pothole diplomacy” to why cameras without audio changed behavior, we unpack the small design choices that protect riders and the people who serve them. Then we step into living history on the USS Alabama. Nine 16‑inch guns, 2,700‑pound shells, wood decks, and a crew working twelve‑hour rotations make the Lucky A feel both massive and human. The adjacent submarine compresses everything—sleep, work, fear—into a narrow tube stacked with bunks over torpedoes. That visceral contrast reframes courage as routine carried out in impossible spaces. We close the loop with a shrimp boil in the hangar, where arguments over rice, broccoli, and cocktail sauce prove that “authentic” is a moving target. And yes, we finally learn why Mobile throws Moon Pies during Mardi Gras: soft, cheap, joyful, and safe to toss by the thousands.Mobile is rising—new airport plans, an Amtrak corridor feeding cruise traffic, breweries, and a downtown that rewards wandering. Along the way, we trade speed for presence, discover how systems actually work, and pick up a few facts you will retell: battleships at 27 knots, subs that humble you, and Moon Pies lighting up a winter sky.Ride along for the laughs, the lessons, and the reminder that leisure is not a reward—it is the plan. If this story made you smile or think, follow the show, share it with a friend, and leave a quick review to help more curious travelers find us. Send a textSubscription Link https://www.buzzsprout.com/2054444/subscribeA slow ride can carry a lot: jokes from a sunlit cruise, a bottle of bourbon tucked into a jersey, and the kind of conversation that pauses for grief and keeps rolling anyway. We open with playful “secret agent” teasing and a check-in on the job search, detour into bourbon dreams and Peerless Distillery legends (yes, including Patton's pistol), and then arrive at the true center of this journey: honoring a father whose love of cycling sparked a friendship and a community. From there, we talk frankly about dementia—what early changes can look like, why quick screening matters, and how new treatments may slow decline. We share small, practical steps for brain health: cutting processed sugar, choosing aluminum-free deodorant, and staying mindful about what touches your skin and rides in your bottle. That thread expands into everyday product safety, from cookware to the surprising places metals still hide, without fear-mongering or hype.Because our map always includes wonder, we celebrate global listeners and reveal a delightfully specific gem: Yuma, Arizona—the sunniest city in the U.S., proud home of a New Year's lettuce drop and a rich military testing history. We swap ride fuel favorites (Payday vs. Three Musketeers), post-ride rewards, and the strangest cargo we've ever hauled—like an RV seat cushion and two mysterious ball-peen hammers found miles apart on the same day. Studio upgrades get a nod, BRAG plans stay in motion, and the road ahead looks open.If you're here for cycling stories, grief handled with care, and the kind of travel that chooses leisure on purpose, you'll feel at home. On this episode of the Transatlantic, host Bakhti Nishanov talks to Georgiy Kent, who took an unusual detour after finishing his graduate program in May, biking over 4,000 miles across the United States to crowdsource funds for Ukraine. From the Oregon coast to Washington D.C., Kent interacted with hundreds of Americans along the way, engaging in dialogue about Russia's war on Ukraine. ---- Georgiy Kent served as a Max Kampelman Policy Fellow at the Helsinki Commission, working on political and economic projects to hold Russia accountable for its ongoing war in Ukraine. He has worked at the Aspen Strategy Group, Harvard Kennedy School, Partnership for Public Service, and Atlantic Council. A graduate of Harvard College and Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), Georgiy specializes in security, economy, and state development in Europe, Asia, and post-communist societies. Today, he is an Associate for Research and Client Strategy at Political Alpha, a political risk advisory firm in D.C., but this summer he decided to hop on a bicycle and cycle across America to raise money for Ukraine. This podcast is hosted by Bakhti Nishanov and produced by Alanna Novetsky, in conjunction with the Senate Recording Studio.

Liza is back from England, where she spent time at the Ace Cafe, as well as the Triumph Factory. It was here that she got to hang with some of the engineers who design the components for the new bikes, and they were all women! She also shares a UK trivia game that you can play along with. We learn the difference between a naked bike, ride and a naked, bike ride. A young man came to the garage on an old CM400 and was surprised at all the cool stuff he learned about why that bike is so cool. Jim is back from another Misfits desert trip to the Mojave, and has some cool stories including how to light the campfire the right way. Neal has an itch, which means it's time to start talking about what the next bike is going to be. He's also been working out to maintain his skills as a rider. What's your regimen?
