Building a better future for our students is going to take the combined efforts of educators, employers and community leaders. The Greater Milwaukee Committee is on a mission to do just that, bringing together the most influential leaders and organizations in Milwaukee to solve some of the toughest challenges facing the city.Joel Brennan leads the organization and joined us in the studio to talk about the role of public-private partnerships between educational institutions and businesses to address the evolving needs of the workforce. The challenges faced by Milwaukee's education system (public, private and charter) are not unique. Communities across the U.S. can learn from the work of the GMC .In this episode, we address:The role of public-private partnerships in improving our education systemHow to build better collaboration between educational institutions and businesses to meet the evolving needs of the workforceInnovative approaches to education, including microcredentials and tailored curriculum developmentThe imperative of fostering critical thinking, problem-solving, and adaptability to thrive in the era of AI and technological disruptionQuotable Moments:"We have a responsibility of what we leave behind, that there's opportunity for [our young people].""The biggest issue around where we're going with workforce... is things are changing so dramatically with AI and how that's going to change the workplace, that we have to do what Wayne Gretzky used to talk about, you know, skate to where the puck is going, not where it is right now.""We need to be preparing people for careers, but ultimately we want them to be deep thinkers, critical thinkers, problem solvers, because there's plenty of those things that are out here that we need to solve."3 Big Takeaways:Regional collaboration enhances workforce readiness: The Higher Education Regional Alliance in Wisconsin facilitates cross-sector partnerships to align education with industry needs, ensuring graduates are equipped for the job market. K-12 education faces systemic challenges, but we owe it to students to solve these problems: It's going to take comprehensive reforms and investing in early childhood education to improve outcomes and workforce readiness. By prioritizing equitable access to quality education and fostering innovation in teaching methods, communities can address these challenges and ensure all students have the opportunity to succeed.Public-private partnerships drive education reform: Through initiatives like workforce training programs, communities leverage combined resources to revitalize education systems, bridging gaps between classroom learning and real-world job requirements, ultimately strengthening local economies.Resources:Learn more about the Greater Milwaukee CommitteeConnect with the Greater Milwaukee Committee:Facebook  |  YouTube  |  Instagram  |  LinkedInEpisode page: https://techedpodcast.com/brennan/Instagram - Facebook - YouTube - TikTok - Twitter - LinkedIn

Tune in to hear Ken's insights on initiatives and approaching them with humility and audacity, striking a balance between boldness and sensitivity to effect meaningful change. Listen and embrace the power of collaboration, representation, and visionary community upliftment.Episode Highlights:05:37 - In roles like mine and similar roles, representation matters. I mean, that lived experience from the neighborhood and bridging that gap between what's happening there and how our institutions work, how our businesses work, is just critical if we're going to move forward and solve some of the challenges that we have.10:19 - It's one thing to sit in a corporate park and think about programs, think about fixes for neighborhoods. It's another thing to kind of be in the neighborhood and walk day by day in that neighborhood and talk to our neighbors, and work with them in coming up with solutions that'll make everybody's lives better in that space.13:33 - We know that this is more than brick and mortar within the building. So, our aim is to help activate the entire neighborhood, not just us, but working with partners, along this. So, the whole goal was this would be catalytic, and we think we're accomplishing that.Connect with Becky Dubin JenkinsLinkedInConnect with Ken RobertsonLinkedInGuest Bio:Ken Robertson has been serving the Foundation as vice president and CFO since October 2015, but was promoted to executive vice president, chief operating officer and chief financial officer in 2020. Meet Tato CorcoranTato Corcoran was born & raised in the San Francisco Bay Area and spent the first decade of her professional career in Silicon Valley. At the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, she started flipping homes & building a portfolio of rental units in Milwaukee. In 2022 she acquired Brandt Molded Marble, a sleepy manufacturing business on its way to extinction. Tato has spent the past year+ transforming that business into one worth owning. You say [you acquired] a sleepy manufacturing business. Can you talk about that a little bit? When COVID started, and I was here in Milwaukee, and I was still kind of going back and forth between Milwaukee and California. I still had my friends there and whatnot. But I was like, “Okay, now's the time.” What is it that I want to pursue? And it dawned on me one day that I could buy a house here, which you really can't do in California when you're 26. So I thought I'd make it an Airbnb. And so I bought my first house, and that led to an absolute real estate obsession. I ended up flipping, wholesaling, buying followable, I've probably done at least a couple of dozen real estate transactions and have a portfolio now that I've kept. But then it felt like the next natural step that I actually saw some of my peers pursuing was to buy a small business. And I'm sure you ladies are intimately familiar with a statistic about baby boomers retiring, it's like a daily rate of 10,000 or something like that. But essentially, no one has an exit plan. So I had some peers pursuing the acquisition of these businesses for very low dollars. And I thought I could do that. You basically have to be scrappy, resourceful and organized, right? I talked to 1,070,000 small business owners just to get a feel for what interested me. And I ended up I originally found this business near the middle of my search and it was broker listed at way too much. And I said to the broker that I don't know anything about manufacturing, so I can't even consider that. And then sure enough, a month or so went by and he called me and the owners were about 14 days from disclosing store and liquidating. So, turns out that [the former owners] had an owner operated business for 35 years. So very well established, and was absolutely an expert in this particular space. He is chemically speaking an expert on molded marble, and he was very active in the business. By the time that he was trying to sell, he was running a skeleton crew. They had their 12 customers who were super loyal to them, and vice versa. He knew exactly what top line, he needed it to put X dollars in his pocket and only need two people and only work 40 hours. And that was that, like he had it down to a science. And so it was sleepy in that it was just not growing. How are you setting up Brandt Molded Marble to really find success as you move forward now that you have it?[The former owner's] existing customer base, which relatively speaking was quite small, was really strong. He serviced all of the main entry-level specs, single-family residential builders in the area. So again, while his top-line dollars were very underwhelming, I knew that his customers were super sticky like they weren't going anywhere. They dominate the spec space here, which again, is a really hot space. So I was like, “Okay, that's positive.” He had zero commercial customers. He also worked with like two general contractors to renovators. There are a bajillion renovation contractors within the Greater Milwaukee and Madison areas who are a perfect fit for the product, and vice versa. So massive opportunity there. So it was just a matter of (there were a lot of layers) to me taking this thing from something that was nothing to something. The first six months were sheer survival. I have never walked into something so blind and underprepared in my entire life. And I have no regrets at all. It's a blast...

Many of them recognize how wonderful it is for them to be able to access resources that they have. And so, I'll call it an easy ask to say, "Please help us provide some financial resources to support the community."07:07 - Education is an issue. We've been all kind of exposed to and grappling with systemic racism, housing – pretty much the areas that we focus on – health, education, basic needs, workforce, employment, all of those issues are challenging, but I think the reality that there are so many disparities and gaps that we need to address and really look hard and long at are just the work of the day.15:19 - I could just go down the list of organizations where people are working hard everyday. And so, the little piece that I can play is it seems minor, but I have built my career around saying yes, involving myself in causes and organizations where I could bring some resources to the table or some knowledge, and it has really fed my soul. So, I don't see that changing, and that's a part of even me moving to Tulsa and being a part of the Tulsa remote program because I have a home-based business or a remote-based business, but I do want to get back to incorporating more in-person speaking. Before the pandemic, I was traveling the country speaking. It sounds crazy to some people, especially the introverts of the world. I'm not an introvert, so I love being on stages in front of hundreds of people and speaking. So, I'm looking forward to getting back to doing that now that we're moving further away from the pandemic. Thelma A. Sias, retired executive and the founder and president of the Sias Group, shares how her childhood and personal story influenced her capacity to lead and why she believes great leadership involves the ability to listen and follow other people. Sias discusses the importance of leading through critical conversations, as well as enabling others to grow as leaders themselves. Importantly, Sias reflects on the remarks she gave when receiving an honorary doctorate from Marquette University in May 2022, during which she charged the audience to create access and opportunity for others, which she believes is how individuals should define their success. Episode Highlights:03:56 - The challenge we are having in today's world, in my opinion, is the fact that we are still struggling with women being in powerful leadership roles. With all of the experience we've had of the success of how women lead, we still struggle with that. And we're still struggling with the issue of younger leaders, leaders that have a different lifestyle. And I think we all need to get over it and understand this message about the table having everyone there, the tent being big enough to include everyone, is significant. We're living in a world that has changed and it continues to change. And if we don't get ourselves ready forward versus constantly going backwards, we're going to delay the enormous progress in this community, in the state, in this world that we need to have.07:42 - My parents were probably the most significant leaders I've ever met in that they led. They took action. They made change happen. They raised 11 kids and sent us all off to college with a combination of athletic and academic scholarships. And they built a principle for us all to work from.17:00 - The resilience to be able to stand up when so many people are pushing you down and the resilience to still believe in yourself when so many people are saying it should not be. Dentists and Dental Labs work together to make kids smile, one of the happiest, most beautiful moments in the world. This holiday season we're furthing the cause by partnering with the community on a Holiday Toy Drive for the kids at Children's Hospital in Milwaukee! We want to show our appreciation to all the dentists, technicians, and members of the community, and this is one small way we can give back. (Details below) Donations will be collected from Dec 2 through Dec 9 at our office and other locations in Greater Milwaukee. Toys will be delivered to Children's Hospital in the afternoon on December 9, 2022. (Keep scrolling for more info) The Why: Helping the kids is a cause that's near and dear to many of our team members because, similar to how dentists and dental technicians help to create wonderful smiles every day, there's nothing like seeing a kid smile. Oftentimes kids will be in the hospital and the families will be saddled with medical bills, making it hard to afford gifts for the holidays. This is our opportunity to help and do something that will make the children smile. A few notes from the hospital: All donations must be brand new and in the original packaging (not gift wrapped). Kindly keep things to a grab-and-go-size that's about 12 inches or smaller. The only hand-made items they accept are knit hats for toddler and above, in addition to fleece blankets. What does the hospital need? Right now they need items for infants. Rattles, teethers, and blankets. They also needs books. They go through 10,000+ books a year so they welcome books for all reading levels and ages. Legos, Stuffed Animals, and Marvel Superhero toys are also in demand. Our office address is: 160 Bishops Way, Brookfield, WI 53005. We will have a dropbox for toys in the lobby :) PS: If and when you end up dropping off toys, we'd love to give you a quick, personalized lab tour while you're here. It's super fun and beneficial! ADDITIONAL DROP OFF LOCATIONS FOR TOYS INCLUDE - Lumber Inn (617 Wells St, Delafield, WI 53018) - Stolley's Hogg Alley (2008 Venice Beach Rd, Oconomowoc, WI 53066) - IKE Media Podcast Network (3044 N Oakland Ave, Milwaukee WI 53211) - Inclusion Coffee Company (3152 Village Square Drive, Hartland, WI 53029) - Wisconsin State Golf Association (11350 W Theo Trecker Way, West Allis, WI 53214) Any questions, email kj@nuartdental.com with subject "Toy Drive" (contact if you need help with a pickup) To conclude, anything is better than nothing, and it's all going to a great local cause. Let's continue changing the world, one smile at a time. #ForTheKids Your friends, Frank, Dan, KJ, and the entire Nu-Art Family. Dentists young and old, prospective lab technicians, and anyone interested in the dental world will find enjoyment in this one. Enjoy!
