My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Judy Lannon, author of the book The Making of Genevieve. Judy's award-winning contemporary women's fiction resonates with readers through its honest and relatable depiction of women and their life experiences. In her debut novel, Nine Days, we meet the Austin family and their narcissistic mother, Genevieve. Inspired by reader requests for more about the mother's character, Judy wrote “The Making of Genevieve.” A conversation with a friend inspired Judy to write “Nine Days,” which won awards soon after publication, launching her writing career. Within two years, The Making of Genevieve was published. Her books have been recognized by The American Writers Association for Best New Debut Fiction and Best Women's Fiction, The Firebird Book Awards, and The New York City Big Book Awards. Judy lives and writes at her home on Cape Cod, MA near the Atlantic Ocean. Though she thinks it's a cliché to say the ocean inspires her, she happily accepts that label because it's a constant presence in her writing. In my book review, I stated The Making of Genevieve is a fabulous women's fiction with a historical setting on the Cape. Genevieve grows up in an affluent area, and though very comfortable, aspires to be in the upper class. And, unlike her peers, she does not see a life that starts and ends with a husband and children. Instead, she wants to be a famous interior designer first - maybe a husband and maybe a family. Unfortunately for Genevieve, a secret she only shares with one other person changes everything. Her marriage to an up and coming young man turns sour after WWII PTSD causes him to turn to alcohol to cope, while her one true love chooses a calling that excludes her. Through it all, she pushes, pulls, streamrolls, and demands her way through issue after issue, always sure that the world is hers for the taking. The Making of Genevieve is a wonderful story of perseverance and resilience as a women tries to make it in a man's world. But just as importantly, it is a hard look at how secrets can lead us to make questionable choices and make life harder than it needs to be. I thoroughly enjoyed this book! If we are to grasp Willis Barnstone's greatest contribution to culture over the course of his 87 years, we can focus on his role first and foremost as a poet – a lover of words, both his own and those of others, and on what he believes are sacred words from our earliest written records down to present day mystics and poets. Willis Barnstone is a poet, translator, biblical scholar, memoirist, anthologist, teacher, and painter. He is a former O'Connor Professor of Greek at Colgate University, Distinguished Professor of Comparative Literature at Indiana University, a Guggenheim Fellow, and winner of numerous literary awards, including the Emily Dickinson, Lannon, and W. H. Auden awards. In 2015 he was recipient of the Fred Cody Lifetime Achievement Award. He is translator of the Greek Lyric Poets, a literary historical version of the New Testament, and poets as diverse as Sappho, Rainer Maria Rilke, Jorge Luis Borges, Antonio Machado, Wang Wei, and St. John of the Cross.Barnstone's life's work includes over 75 books including With Borges on an Ordinary Evening in Buenos Aires (University of Illinois Press 1999), The Poems of Jesus Christ (W.W. Norton & Company 2012), The Poetics of Ecstasy: Varieties of Ekstasis from Sappho to Borges (Holmes & Meier Pub 1983), The Poetics of Translation: History, Theory, Practice (Yale University Press 1995), Sappho and the Greek Lyric Poets (Pantheon 1988), The Other Bible (HarperOne 2005), The Apocalypse (editor, translator) (New Directions 2000), The Gnostic Bible (Shambhala 2009), The Restored New Testament: A New Translation with Commentary, Including the Gnostic Gospels Thomas, Mary, and Judas (W.W. This week's interview is with Judy Lannon (Nine Days, Atmosphere Press, March 2022).A novice at writing, Judy was inspired to write her novel after advising a young woman about not only the emotions involved but the practical steps needed to deal with the passing of an aging parent. She describes herself as an undisciplined writer, not keeping to a regular schedule or setting word count goals but instead writing when the mood strikes her. Even though she didn't start marketing her book until after it was published, she's nevertheless found success with one-on-one selling in her New England community. Judy was born and raised on the south shore of MA and considers herself fortunate to have spent all her childhood summers in Harwich Port, a small seaside community situated on Nantucket Sound on Cape Cod. “My mother would pick us up on the last day of school, drive us to the cape house for the summer, returning home sometimes as late as the morning of the first day of school.” Today Judy and her husband live in Orleans, still on Cape Cod, with their two perfectly imperfect standard poodles. She still spends as much time as possible on the beach, Nauset or bayside, running the dogs on the flats, looking for sea glass and always appreciating the beauty of where she lives. Note: Nine Days reads like a memoir, but it is literary contemporary family fiction. Judy Lannon writes with wit, humor, and compassion, about family, living, and dying and describes her dramatic characters as complex and complicated with a sense of familiarity. Do you want to make your own brain a safe haven? We explore the idea that healing happens when we resonate with other human beings and with ourselves. In this replay from a popular show recorded in January 2021, our guest neuroscience educator Sarah Peyton talks about how our inner voice is part of our default mode network, the automatic part of the brain that is formed by our experiences, and about how we typically model our own thoughts after our parents' mental habits. We talk about inner voices and how we can tame them by offering them empathy guesses in the mode of NonViolent Communication (NVC). Sarah offers suggestions about using these techniques to help people working with their dreams. We take a call from Jaya from Hawaii who shares a series of recurring dreams about being trapped underwater by huge waves. Sarah works with Jaya helping her to have a sense of accompaniment with these big images and with the big feelings that come with them. We end with Sarah sharing that she has been incubating dreams of beauty. Bio: Sarah Peyton, Certified Trainer of Nonviolent Communication, constellation facilitator and neuroscience educator, integrates brain science and the use of resonant language to heal trauma and nourish self-warmth with exquisite gentleness. She teaches and lectures internationally, and is the author of the book “Your Resonant Self: Guided Meditations and Exercises to Engage Your Brain's Capacity for Healing.” Her second book from W.W. Norton, “The Your Resonant Self Workbook”, is available for preorder on Amazon and will be published May 25, 2021. Her work with dreams explores how dream images unfold when we hold them with resonance. Josh Lannon grew up in nightclubs in Vegas. His family owned and operated clubs that were voted #1 in the country, five-years in a row. It was a fast paced life, and one that almost cost Josh all of it. He ended up at the bottom, but through faith and family, he has clawed his way back out, and he's pouring his passion into Warriors Heart, healing centers for Veterans, first responders and members of the law enforcement community. Let's meet Josh and hear his story on this episode of PICK UP THE SIX Podcast.
Dr. Kim Lannon points out how the Amber Heard and Johnny Depp defamation trial has highlighted the science behind mental health treatment. Too often we treat mental health treatment as merely "talking about feelings" when there is an abundance of tried and true scientific principles at work. Dr. Lannon demonstrates where we have seen this due to the unusually public nature of the trial.
Dr. Kim Lannon talks about not being able to say "no". We all have relationships where we experience problems saying no. Sometimes those are the only kind of relationships we have. Sometimes we have trouble at work saying no. Sometimes those are our most significant relationships. But those relationships are always problematic and always, it seems, the problem is rooted both with you and with the other person in the relationship. Dr. Lannon talks about the causes and the potential cures in situations and relationships where you can't say no!

Connection is the Cure If you are like me, sometimes you look around in your home, your community, and the world and feel overwhelmed by the pain. So many people are hurting. Children are stressed to the point of thinking about taking their own life. Parents struggle to respond when adolescents seem rebellious, angry, lost, and out of control. Married couples hurt one another over and over again with disagreements, harsh words, and thoughtless actions. These are only examples found inside families. Our communities and world also express pain through war, hatred toward the ‘other', and social isolation. The pain seems overwhelming and constant. I hope to be a person that assists with the healing of the world, I desire to help families recover from unimaginable hurt and to walk with couples as they grow to love one another again. I want to impact my community in a way that increases understanding and decreases social isolation. But how? What is the cure for the pain that so many experience? I believe that healing occurs in the context of relationship. Parents overwhelmed by the difficult behaviors and strong emotions of their child need relationship. Couples caught in a dance of conflict desire to know and be known. Our communities racked by violence and hatred are desperate for an end to the isolation of being ‘the other'. In short, I believe that connection is the cure. The book “A General Theory of Love” (Lewis, Amini, & Lannon; 2000) describes the resonance, regulation, and revision that occurs in deep connection as the cure for relational and emotional pain. Resonance: Resonance is defined as “the reinforcement or prolongation of sound by reflection from a surface or by the synchronous vibration of a neighboring object.” When you strike a guitar string the vibration from that string causes the strings next to it to vibrate. Even more, if the two strings are vibrating at the same speed they are said to be in resonance and they amplify or reinforce one another. Humans are constantly broadcasting signals about what is happening inside of them (Lewis, Amini & Lannon; 2000). As our inner world is broadcast we long for another to recognize our signals and synchronously reflect our experience. Synchronous reflection amplifies and reinforces our internal state. The amplification and reinforcement of our internal state allow us to experience the sensation of being known and knowing the other (Lewis, Amini, & Lannon; 2000). Regulation: The broadcasting and synchronous reflection of experience allows an individual to be known and to know another. This connection of two beings establishes a physiological rhythm resulting in the modulation of emotions (Lewis, Amini, & Lannon; 2000). When distressed we instinctively look for others to help modulate overwhelming feelings. We seek out support groups, friends, partners, pets, or service providers (therapists, doctors, etc…) to regulate our physiology. Lewis, Amini, & Lannon argue that learning to modulate emotions is not learned through didactic or cognitive learning but only through experience (2000). “They absorb the skill from living in the presence of an adept external modulator, and they learn it implicitly” (Lewis, Amini, & Lannon; 2000; p. 171). Revision: Regulation is the process of implicitly learning to modulate emotion in connection with another. Revision is the process of rewiring the brains relational pathways to create more fulfilling relationships (Lewis, Amini, & Lannon; 2000). Our relational pathways are shaped early in life through the previously described processes of resonance and regulation. Hundreds probably thousands of early experiences form our templates of relating to self, others, and the world (Bowlby, 1969). Often, these early ways of relating do not lead to fulfilling relationships. Revising these templates requires many interactions with another in new more fulfilling ways. Like the process of regulation, revision is best caught rather than taught. It is the experience of a new relational pattern that changes the brain for good (Lewis, Amini, & Lannon; 2000). Connection The cure for relational and emotional pain is connection. Connection is synchronous reflection of experience, the modulation of emotions with another, and the revising of relational neuropathways through experience. Healing through connection is incredible news, it means that we all have the ability to help our loved ones heal. We all have the ability to connect, it is hard work, and it will require revision of our own, but it can be done. References: Bowlby, J. (1969). On the very first episode of The Soul of Christianity we have welcomed one of our favorite authors from mbird.com and the vicar of Grace Anglican Mission in Louisville, KY, Nick Lannon. The Rev. Lannon walks us through the very first clause of the Apostles Creed: "I Believe in God The Father..." and helps us think through issues of creation, our Creator and what it means in light of the Gospel. Check us out on thesoulofchristianity.com for more info and a free Bible study!
