Shawna didn't follow a typical path to becoming one of the most in-demand live entertainers in sports. In the last few years alone, she has been one of four DJs in the NBA Bubble, has opened for Lizzo and Shaq, was the official DJ of the Ryder Cup, and much more. It wasn't long ago that the now 40-year-old was cold-calling bars and clubs in Milwaukee, “begging” to spin on a random weeknight. In fact, Shawna didn't even get into DJing until she had to stop playing basketball (she played for UW-Madison and professionally overseas). So, how did all of this happen? Listen to this week's episode to find out and get inspired by one of our most beloved Milwaukeeans, DJ Shawna.Sponsored by Central Standard Distillery: https://thecentralstandard.com/ Produced by Story Mark Studios: https://storymarkstudios.io/ Media partner – OnMilwaukee: https://onmilwaukee.com/

Then we end the show with long time loyal listener, Joe from Appleton, absolutely crushing our Woodstock Music Quiz. Listen to test yourself and see how many you would have gotten right. WTMJ's Kevin Wells profiles Shawna Nicols, aka DJ Shawna
This week's guest — and the final My First Band guest of 2020 — is Shawna Nicols. Wisconsin sports fans probably know her better as "DJ Shawna," the moniker she uses while serving as the official in-game DJ for the Milwaukee Bucks as well as the Wisconsin Badgers football team. In recent years, the accomplished Milwaukee DJ and emcee has also worked the turntables and curated the musical accompaniment at the NCAA Women's Final Four, during University of Wisconsin men's basketball games, at Marquette women's basketball games, as a headliner at PrideFest Milwaukee, and as Lizzo's opener at last year's Summerfest. Oh yeah, she was also one of just four DJs invited to work in "The Bubble" when the NBA resumed its season/postseason in Orlando over the summer. Long before she was playing music during professional basketball games, Shawna was a pro basketball player herself. Recently, a few days before the Bucks and Shawna were set to start another season, Shawna spoke to My First Band host Tyler Maas about the work she puts into pairing music with specific players and in-game occurrences, the experience of living and working in The Bubble, and being one of the few people in attendance when Milwaukee made the historic decision to forego playing a playoff game in response to the police shooting of Jacob Blake. Eventually, the conversation turned to Shawna's days as a Milwaukee basketball standout, a Badgers player and a professional baller in the Netherlands. Along the way, they talked about her unconventional path to becoming a professional DJ and how a mixture of tenacity and talent have opened exciting new doors for her in entertainment. My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering and Lakefront Brewery. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts. You can also listen to rebroadcasts of previous My First Band episodes on WMSE every Wednesday from noon to 12:30 p.m. CST. Music used in this episode comes courtesy of Devils Teeth ("The Junction Street Eight Tigers").
DJ Shawna, a modern-day renaissance woman, is the official DJ for the Milwaukee Bucks, a published author, a philanthropist, a clothing brand owner, a podcast host, a former professional basketball player...the list goes on. So, put simply, we had a lot to talk about—so much so that we decided to split our conversation into two unique episodes. --- In this episode—episode two—Journeymen hosts, Jacob and Ian, dive into the driving force behind much of Shawna's life: basketball. What is life like as a high school All-American, a Division 1 college player, an overseas professional? And, what is life like when that path winds to a stop? For Shawna, it meant now pursuing something she'd previously considered more of hobby. She was going to be a DJ—hence the genesis of the moniker, DJ Shawna—a decision that has led to numerous life-defining experiences, culminating—at least for now—in the role of her dreams: official DJ of the Milwaukee Bucks. Throughout her journey, one theme emerges consistently. Without her willingness to be bold and go big, DJ Shawna wouldn't be anywhere close to where she is today. --- + Follow DJ Shawna across social media (@djshawna), catch her streaming on Twitch and Mixcloud, and support her #DareToBe brand. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/journeymenpdcst/support

So, put simply, we had a lot to talk about—so much so that we decided to split our conversation into two unique episodes. --- In this episode—episode one—Journeymen hosts, Jacob and Ian, dive into the ways Shawna is contributing to missions and ideas that are greater than herself. The three discuss the impact her late step-father, Joe Weirick, had on her and her decision to write "The Adventures of Bob and Downtown Milwaukee," all proceeds from which are donated to Key To Change—an organization fighting to end chronic homelessness in Milwaukee. Shawna's altruism becomes even more evident as she elaborates on her #DareToBe brand—a passion project that seeks to inspire others to dream big and dare to be...whatever they want. Representing everything that is good about the city of Milwaukee, Shawna is an inspiration to listen to and a model of paying it forward. --- Our second episode with DJ Shawna drops on Wednesday, December 23.
