I'm celebrating Indie folk-rock this week to kick off this year with Eric Earley of the renowned and critically-acclaimed band Blitzen Trapper!! Eric is a true icon and superb songwriter with a knack for weaving unique tales developed through his years of travel along the road to self-discovery. Eric's song Furr — considered to be one of the finest folk tunes of all-time — brought Blitzen Trapper to prominence and earned them a record deal back in the late 00's. I talk to Eric about how he mines the myriad adventures along his life's journey for lyrical content. We traverse the roads less traveled as Eric talks to me about his Buddhist learnings, as well as his current work as an advocate for the unhoused. Eric's sense of humor and unique perspective on the spiritual world as he sees it makes this an amazing and must-listen interview! For more information on Roadcase: https://linktr.ee/roadcasepod and https://www.roadcasepod.comOr contact Roadcase by email: info@roadcasepod.comRoadcase theme music: "Eugene (Instrumental)" by Waltzer

Interview with Eric Earley of Blitzen Trapper 2024 Launched roughly two decades ago in Portland, OR, Blitzen Trapper garnered early attention with a series of self-released albums before breaking out internationally with a pair of critically acclaimed LPs (2007's Wild Mountain Nation and 2008's Furr) that would cement their status at the forefront of the modern indie folk revival. Rolling Stone hailed the band's “hazy, psychedelic Americana,” while NPR praised their “explosive live performances and infectious roots-rock swagger,” and The New York Times compared their songs to Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, and Neil Young. Dates with Fleet Foxes, Wilco, and Dawes followed, as did festival appearances at Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Newport Folk, and Coachella, among others. In the years to come, the band would go on to release six more similarly lauded studio albums, culminating with 2020's Holy Smokes Future Jokes, which Mojo proclaimed “sound[s] like the Beatles at Big Pink.” There are numbers so vast they exceed the scope of human reckoning, concepts so immeasurable they surpass our capacity to understand. On their radiant new album, 100's of 1000's, Millions of Billions, Blitzen Trapper make peace with the unknowable, surrendering themselves to forces beyond their control as they explore the infinite with a broad mind and an open heart. Inspired by singer/songwriter Eric Earley's fascination with Buddhist texts and meditation (the title comes from a phrase that appears over and over in the Mahayana sutras), the album offers a captivating take on rebirth and transcendence, and the circularity of existence, navigating its way through the space beyond dreams and reality, beyond gods and mortals, beyond life and death. The songs here are as sincere as they are surreal, rooted in rich character studies and deep reflection, and unfolding like a riddle-filled journey that asks many questions and offers no answers. The production is intoxicating to match, blending lo-fi intimacy and trippy psychedelia into a mesmerizing swirl of analog and electronic sounds. Add it all together and the result is a gorgeous, sprawling collection wrapped in lush layers of synthesizers and washed out electric guitars–a poignant, expansive exploration of perception and purpose that manages to look both forwards and backwards all at once. Eric Earley is the songwriter behind this PNW roots music mainstay that has toured with Pavement, Drive By Truckers, Dawes and many others.
Earlier this year, the Portland band Blitzen Trapper released its 10th studio album, “100’s of 1000’s, Millions of Billions.” The band found success in 2008 with the release of their album “Furr.” Founding members Eric Earley and Brian Adrian Koch join us in the studio, along with fellow band member Nathan Vanderpool, to play some songs and talk about the new album, which is based on songs that Earley recorded on 4-track tapes in the early '90s.
Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Tuesday, July 23, 2024. It's hot out there! Beating the heat has been critically important this summer across the country. Just this past week a camper at Kanawha State Forest was treated for heat stroke. Park Superintendent Clark Sanford offered advice for those taking part in outside activity: “You want to pack at least one bottle of water for every two miles that you plan to be out hiking, and then to eat and to have proper salt intake as well,” he said. “Your body needs that salt to be able to hold onto the water to remain hydrated.” Sanford added that if you get in trouble and you don't have cell service, you should still use your phone to call 911. Many cell phones, in the case of an emergency, can connect with satellites to get help. Officials say it's critical to listen to your body. If something doesn't feel right, slow down, take a rest and find a way to cool down. Does the mind of Eric Earley from Blitzen Trapper ever rest? I think not. After all, he told me that he liked to solve math problems in college while he was making breakfast. Earley is a voracious reader who just finished his self-proclaimed "Time of the Tomes," in which he read nothing but, well, tomes. (The longer, the better. Infinite Jest? Please. Kid's stuff).Earley has a family and his other occupation involves working with the homeless population in Portland, so he's not quite as active as he used to be. But that's only because he doesn't have as much time, although now he's quite invested in meditation and dream journals. And songwriting, of course. This is the second time I've interviewed Earley; the first was in 2018, when he told me that he'd written five unpublished novels "just for fun." Earley is also responsible for turning me on to the great short story writer Breece D'J Pancake. Blitzen Trapper's latest album 100's of 1000's, Millions of Billions is out now on Yep Roc Records.

On today's episode, I talk to musician Eric Earley. Originally from Salem, Oregon, Eric and his friends formed the band Garmonbozia in the year 2000. Gamonbozia eventually became Blitzen Trapper, and after self-releasing their first few albums, including their breakthrough Wild Mountain Nation, the band signed to Sub Pop. Over the next four years, the label released three albums to acclaim, and since then they've released about a dozen albums and EPs on different labels, including their own. Blitzen Trapper's latest recording 100's of 1000's, Millions of Billions will be released in mid-May on Yep Roc, and folks, it's a delight! Portland-based Blitzen Trapper created a new album with the help of bandleader Eric Earley's innermost thoughts: his dreams. “In 2022 I kept a dream journal for about seven months, in which I chronicled my nocturnal journeys; this song is the result. Each verse is from a different dream that I recorded during that period,” explains Earley. “Like all dreams, they present as riddles, both personal and cosmic, from teenage preachers to the devil himself, digital avatars and heaven's janitor–and a big old ‘Hello!' to them all.”

The Mascot Theory has been kicking around Wisconsin weekend-warrior style for the past decade, but like many musicians, the great pandemic-induced entertainment halt of 2020 forced the band to reflect and refocus musical efforts. With the core foundation of singer/songwriter Erik Kjelland and the rhythm section of Nick Fry on bass guitar and Paul Metz on drums, The Mascot Theory used this time off to slightly shift their sound away from their acoustic-driven folk-rock music and into a more classic rock inspired Rock and Roll groove, especially thanks to the addition of lead guitarist Cory who brings a strong musical swagger and reverence to the guitar gods of the past. In April 2022, the band worked with famed producer Terry Manning (Led Zeppelin, ZZ Top, Shakira, Lenny Kravitz, Stax Record) at Sonic Ranch Studios near El Paso, TX and recorded 13 new songs as well as 2 updated versions of classic live show staple songs to record songs for the upcoming "Every Sign Of Life" album. Along with a WAMI (Wisconsin Area Music Industry) win for Best Male Vocalist (Erik Kjelland) and a nomination for Best Americana/folk artist, The Mascot Theory has won over 20 MAMA (Madison Area Music Association) awards including back-to-back 2016 and 2017 Artist of the Year awards. They have played major festivals throughout Wisconsin including Summerfest, Freak Fest, and Mile of Music Festival, and have shared the stage with BoDeans, America, Don McLean, The Jayhawks, Vance Joy, Frank Turner, Chase Rice, Kaleo, The Wild Feathers, Guster, Blitzen Trapper, Cory Chisel, Andy Frasco and the UN, Miles Nielsen and the Rusted Hearts, American Aquarium, American Scarecrows, and Lillie Mae. The new music travels into its classic rock influences; harmonies that bring to mind the Eagles or Poco, a bit of that Rolling Stones guitar swagger, a little ZZ Top blues rock, a dash of the Pink Floyd mood, but never straying far from the core of the Tom Petty/Beatle-esque importance of solid melody and lyrics. Songs like "When I Drift Away", "Lavender Blues" and "Fast Car Getaway" showcase the new album's infectious energy and beautiful harmonies within an eclectic landscape of well-crafted and memorable songs.

Armed with a four track and a vision of a post apocalyptic future, Blitzen Trapper's Eric Earley would spend much of the mid aughts tolling away inside a leaky practice space in downtown Portland. Eventually, a record would emerge. In Episode 39 of In Loving Recollection, Earley tells the story of the band's 2007 album Wild Mountain Nation, detailing the processes and equipment used during its creation and the unexpected outcomes that the end result would produce.
On this episode of Headliners, Greg sits down with ALMA MATER to talk about their new single FADING MOON.Oregon folk rock duo, Alma Mater, comprised of veterans of the Los Angeles and Oregon music scene, Dirk Sullivan and Andrew Paul Woodworth. The pair teamed up with producer Gregg Williams (Sheryl Crow, The Dandy Warhols, Blitzen Trapper, Emmylou Harris) to craft the poignant orchestral folk pop tune.Andrew confides, “I was never afraid of dying until I had a child. Fading Moon, on the surface, seems like a love letter to my two baby boys. But, in reality, it's a means to comfort myself from my overwhelming fear of leaving them behind when I die. When pure and intense love is experienced, there is a level of pain associated with it. I've never been more happy, but I've never been more scared. So this seemingly sweet, folky ditty is really a pretty dark, anxious proclamation.”Musically, the hypnotic guitar riff of “Fading Moon” was written when Dirk was in hospice care, visiting his sick mother. Performing for her brought her joy and “Fading Moon” also represents the magic and healing nature of music.Combined, Alma Mater have spent two decades recording and touring in various projects. Sullivan was signed to Interscope Records with his band Love On Ice and Woodworth fronted Elephant Ride, signed to Sony Records.Anxious for some musical therapy during the pandemic, the two started meeting in Woodworth's garage. Sullivan was enthralled with an alternate tuning on his guitar and found himself writing songs at a blistering clip, totally inspired by this fresh reverence for his instrument. He found the perfect partner in Woodworth, who could add pathos and melody to his already provocative landscapes. Sullivan was wrestling with a recent divorce and with the slow demise of his mother. By contrast, Woodworth was about to welcome his first child. They found a kinship in the intensity of their disparate stories. Somehow those contrasting life experiences brought out something completely raw and beautiful and melancholic and utterly explosive in their writing.CONNECT WITH ALMA MATERInstagram SUPPORT THIS SHOW
David Bunker, who currently serves as the chaplain of Judson University's Music Business and Entrepreneurship program, and has a long history as both a music industry leader and as an artist and songwriter himself, joins JJT to talk about the idea of "artist care" from the perspective of both creatives and those who wish to serve them. Bunker has been deeply embedded in the True Tunes DNA since John first shared his vision for a store, venue, magazine, and community that would dare to engage music - and art in general - with brain, heart, and guts fully engaged. John was just 16 years old then - the newly minted "music buyer" at a Christian bookstore in Wheaton, IL, and Bunker had recently transitioned from being in the Terry Taylor-produced band Shelter to working for a record label. "He was the first adult to take me and my crazy ideas seriously," John remembers. "And all through our journey - from the exciting highs to the devastating lows, he has been by my side with words of wisdom, compassion, encouragement, and care." Bunker, who is also a poet, author, and leader of creative care retreats, joins JJT nearly 35 years into their friendship to talk about the growing importance of Artist Care. Lydia Ramsey - “I Will Wait For You” from the 2022 self-released album Like A Dream. Lydia Ramsey is an Indianola, WA-born, Seattle-based Americana artist that's been channeling the vintage folk sounds of Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt since 2016. Her wistful melodies and enchanting vocals and often simple in presentation: just a guitar or banjo, perhaps some twinkling piano, and showstealingly lovely coos. Her latest record Like A Dream was released in September and hones in on the collective thoughts, anxieties, and loneliness felt during the pandemic. Our Song of the Day “I Will Wait For You” is especially relatable looking back on those lockdown days but also for many still, as she speaks to a friend - or perhaps to herself - in the depths of despair, encouraging them to keep moving forward. “Running through your head /What if this lasts forever,” Ramsey quavers. “It's bitter end in these days without being close together.” Resiliently, she presses on, hoping, waiting, and praying for the day in which things “will be better than ever.” Ramsey collaborated with a number of longtime musician-friends, engineer Johnny Bregar, and New York-based engineer/producer, D. James Goodwin (The National, Kevin Morby, Blitzen Trapper) on Like A Dream. Blitzen Trapper has been making some of the most interesting and compelling experimental folk/rock/alt-country/progressive music since The Flying Burrito Brothers, and their frontman, main songwriter, producer, and musician, Eric Earley joins us on the podcast to talk about the whole story. From his own roots as a musically adventurous kid to the band's most recent album, Holy Smokes Future Jokes, to "cosmic humility" and his work with homeless veterans in the Portland area, Earley is a fount of mystical, meaningful, art. We also crank up the Jukebox for a deep dive into the seemingly unlikely world of “sacred psychedelia,” and check in with poet, teacher, and music industry veteran, David Bunker for some much-appreciated perspective. It's a wild trip, but the thread between Hendrix, “Jesus Psych,” and contemporary artists like Blitzen Trapper, Natalie Bergman, Daniel Amos, and Sufjan Stevens is strong. Brace yourself for a long, winding, and beautifully weird and spiritual musical experience. 2008 was an event filled year. Barack Obama was elected president, Satoshi Nakamoto introduced the concept of Bitcoin, Spotify was launched in Sweden and an extra “leap second” was added to the end of the year. It was also the year that Portland, Oregon band Blitzen Trapper released their album Furr and the single of the same name. 21 years, 42 million streams, and heaps of critical praise later, the band's singer, guitarist and writer Eric Earley discusses “Furr” and the song's humble beginnings. Ascoltiamo: Brian Eno, Antony and the Johnsons, Tim Buckley, Blitzen Trapper, Leon Bridges, Peter Gabriel.
Neanderthal Politics. We rebuke Joe Biden's use of reactionary caveman stereotypes to characterize his political opponents. What would Fred Flintstone say? Psaki explains. Meanwhile, our notes on Biden's Border Crisis. Importing COVID across the Wide Open Southern Border. We note that Biden has still offered no press conferences, nor even a State of the Union Address. How fully incapacitated is our Installed President? What a scam. Meanwhile, developing our new action plan of RINO Tracking. Studying President Trump's remarks on Karl Rove, Liz Cheney, Mitch McConnell and others. Is Mitch planning on leaving, after wrecking the place? Let Us Mobilize. Come Back Home. Hold Meg. Alright, full disclosure, though this show does fall on the same day as the big game down in Tampa, it has nothing to do with football or that epic game. Instead, it's just another rocking lineup of GREAT music for you to enjoy while eating wings and nachos with whatever game is playing in the background. We have great songs by Dawes, Counting Crows, Ryan Adams, Blitzen Trapper, A Band of Bees, Tom Petty, The Decemberists, Neil Young, The Mavericks, Nick Lowe, Dave Matthews Band and MANY MORE! Let the games begin!!!

We had the pleasure of interviewing The Brummies over Zoom! The Brummies is an independent band of three embodied by the vocalists and instrumentalists, John Davidson and Jacob Bryant, and Trevor Davis playing drums. The band was formed when they were in high school inspired by several iconic artists such as My Morning Jacket, Elton John, ELO, The Beatles, and Blitzen Trapper. These influences inspired their psych-rock vibe incorporated with the soft-indie folk genre. Their success was rooted when Jacob and John poured their heart into writing music. They collaborated with different artists such as Band Perry with their song Done. The song was number one on Billboard’s Country Airplay Chart back in the year 2013. Before forming The Brummies, they were a performing duo called John & Jacob. In 2014, they even released an independent album in which one of the singles called Be My Girl was on a television series, Nashville. One of their biggest milestones as a performing duo was when they were given an opportunity to open for Kacey Musgraves’ tour, Trailer Different Park tour in 2014. They initially collaborated with Trevor Davis. After wrapping up the tour in 2015, Davis officially became part of the group and introduced themselves as The Brummies. https://open.spotify.com/artist/1B9SbgFtfWSlUvAd1y0AaAhttps://www.thebrummies.com/https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZkmxICoApAzCIrazLxhIGwhttps://www.instagram.com/thebrummies/?hl=enWe want to hear from you! The Love Fest of the Trump Campaign. Crowds chant "We Love You" at a weekend White House Rally. Media People attempt to inject their poison, but increasingly powerless to do so. Newt Gingrich says "Trump wins" in November, says Trump has saved millions of lives with decisive pandemic leadership. Gallup reveals solid voter majorities think Trump is a "strong and decisive leader" and also believe they are "better off" than they were four years ago. Meanwhile, our notes on Beltway efforts at "rigging" most everything against outsider Trump. Major scandal explodes around the Commission on Presidential Debates and scheduled moderator Steve Scully. Tweeting with Scaramucci? For crying out loud? Caught red handed in a set up, then compounded with transparent lies about Scully having been "hacked." Yeah right! Democrats cracking. Reviewing Kamala's phony facial expressions. Not ready for prime time. Plus, Trump moves on Declassification, after Durham punts. A caller born behind the Iron Curtain advises America to vote Trump. No need for Democrat Communism. Also, we present Eddie Van Halen's full and unexpurgated virtuoso guitar solo "Eruption." With Listener Calls & Music via Costax, Louane, Blitzen Trapper and Van Halen. Sacred Song from Zach Williams and Dolly Parton. There Was Jesus. For the memory of Colorado patriot and veteran Lee Keltner. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
