Readers learn the truth about America’s most detrimental and unexplained socioeconomic crisis: How the family farms that feed us went from cutting a middle-class path through the Great Depression to barely making ends meet in modern America. Along the way, they’ll see what it truly takes to feed our country: accidents that can kill or maim; weather that blesses or threatens; resilience in the face of crushing economic crises, from depressions and recessions to COVID-19; and the tradition that presses down on each generation when you're not just fighting for your job, you're fighting for your heritage. With newly analyzed data, sharp historical analysis, conversations with some of modern farming’s most notable champions and critics alike, honest debate, and personal storytelling, Reisinger reveals how the hollowing out of rural America is affecting every single American dinner table. Food prices soaring far beyond the rate of inflation, a vulnerable food supply chain, environmental and ecological dilemmas, the security of our farmland from foreign adversaries, a mental health crisis that includes farmer suicides and addictions, a deepening urban-rural divide, and more worries than ever about what’s for dinner. These are all becoming the hallmarks of a food system that has long stood as a modern miracle. So many first-time ingredients to spice up the episode we've whipped up this week: Our FIRST guest from the CULINARY arts... Our FIRST guest co-host who is also an artist in the art form o' the day... and our FIRST guest who has brought along his MOM! A melange of new flavors baked into this week's conversation with 2024 Top Chef-testant CHEF VALENTINE HOWELL, JR, and his mother, STEPHANIE JOACINE, at whose side Val first came to know and love the art and science of food. And because there are never truly too many cooks in the kitchen, we are thrilled to be joined by guest co-host LINDSAY CHRISTIANS, a full-time food editor and arts writer at The Capital Times in Madison, Wisconsin. Bon appetit! BIOS: Born and raised in Boston, VALENTINE HOWELL, JR. was drawn to the magic of hospitality and food as far back as he can remember. Officially starting his culinary education at Madison Park Technical Vocational High School and graduating from Newbury College with a B.S. in hotel, restaurant and hospitality management, he continues to be inspired by food, art, and his love for culture, travel and the people around him. With over two decades of experience working behind the line in some of Boston's most notable kitchens, Valentine's path has led to experiences working alongside culinary royalty such as Lydia Shire, shaping how he approaches cooking and expanding his culinary acumen. A James Beard Award finalist for Best Chef in the Northeast in 2023, every kitchen has imparted diverse knowledge to Valentine's repertoire. Highlighting local produce and other various cultural and local ingredients, Valentine is currently focusing on hosting pop-ups to promote his international food concept, Black Cat Eatery, which consists of tacos, shared plates of Caribbean, Afro-Latin, and Latin street foods, and dishes with his creative take. Chef Val is currently the head chef at Lingo, the in-headquarter restaurant and bar at EF Education First in Cambridge, MA, which is enjoyed by EF employees and guests. Move over brewers, Madison distilleries are having a moment. And they're making more than just brandy for your Old Fashioned. Fifteen years ago, Madison had exactly one distillery, and it was pretty new. Now, there's at least ten in the area, if you count companies producing spirits for their own cocktails. Our pal Lindsay Christians, food editor at The Cap Times, is here with the latest on local spirits.

It's never been easier to eat a meat-free diet in Madison.
In the latest episode of the Cap Times' politics podcast, Wisconsin Supreme Court candidate Daniel Kelly talks about being a constitutional conservative. Kelly, a conservative, is vying for a seat in the (ostensibly) nonpartisan race against Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge Janet Protasiewicz, a liberal. Ideological control of the court is on the line, which has attracted a flood of national attention and made the race the most expensive judicial contest in American history. In the episode, we asked Kelly about cases that could come before the court including a challenge to the state's 1849 abortion ban and a new look at the state's electoral maps. We also discussed his endorsements and previous work, his judicial philosophy and why he believes he is the right person to fill the seat being vacated by retiring conservative Justice Patience Roggensack. And, of course, we put him through the rigors of the lightning round.
