Same Messages, Different Words   Most of us wish to communicate effectively with others.  To accomplish this goal, we often use the same core of our beliefs, values, attitudes, and experiences.    Like an artist who can convey artistic viewpoints using different mediums or a pastor who chooses to focus on varied aspects of his/her faith, a psychologist will use his knowledge and experiences within a certain framework/philosophy to assist others with making healthy life choices.   Wellness Psychology is the framework of choice for this Power for Positive Living and Friendship podcast series.   This psychologist, like the artist and pastor, conveys the same message on the power of personal choice in different podcasts while choosing to focus on Wellness Psychology using a variety of words.   The power of the listener to decide what role these messages/words will play in living his/her gift of life remains an individual choice.

Physical Versus Mental Health Choices   A foundation belief of Wellness Psychology is that we each have the personal power of the verb "to choose" in laying out our individual life path.  Our life is constantly changing; our choices often determine the consequences that characterize us as humans.    A recent viral pandemic provided new options for many.  There were often stark choices between support for balancing our physical health behaviors within a society versus our individualized needs for supporting our own emotional health with in-person human interaction.  We were often asked to evaluate the prices we were able to pay for certain outcomes versus the prices we were willing to pay for supporting our individual physical and emotional health.

My Pandemic Birthday Letter   2020 has introduced many life changes for most people.  Taking time to ponder and reflect on the many stresses and challenges we each face during this period allows us to make healthy physical and mental choices for ourselves.     One stress can be "Plexiglas Loneliness" where we are touch deprived of active intervention with other humans.  Another can be trying to play psychological mind games like "If only.." in an effort to change our past.  The third stress might be trying to change other people as they make decisions different from the ones we choose for ourselves.    Living is risky.  Each of us tends to develop our personal risk meter to determine the risks we are willing to take during a pandemic to maintain our physical and emotional health.   Our choices allow us to live life while being aware that all of our choices do have consequences.  The introspection of Wellness Psychology increases our chances of choosing healthy options.

Dr Paul W Dyer and Dr Myrna had just an amazing, amazing conversation. I’d like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to those who don’t know me and to reintroduce myself to those who do. My name is Myrna-Elois Davis Washington. I’m “Goddess Dr. ME.” I AM a wife of 36 years, a mother of 5, a Grandmother, a health advocate, promoter, educator, and resource entity; an empathic and clairaudient/clairsentient energy healer, an ordained Omnist minister, a certified Hypnotherapist/Hypnotist, Yogi (Hatha, Kundalini, Tantra, Nada, and Pranayama), Reiki Master, Qi gong, and Dance-Exercise Instructor; an Ascended Master, an Awakened Goddess, and a health and wellness psychologist with a BA in Psychology, and a Masters and Doctorate in Health and Wellness Psychology. Two years ago, when I began working on my doctoral dissertation, I created #Philautiology as a study group to examine the effects of an original comprehensive, mindfulness-based program on the health parameters (perceived stress, self-efficacy, depressive and anxiety symptoms, and rate of chronic diseases) of the caregivers uh of persons with Alzheimer’s Disease, the number six cause of death in the country. To date, the group, “#Philautiology: The Art of Self-Love as Self-Care,” has over 200 members. To provide cost-effective, affordable accessibility to quality, evidence-based resources, I developed a new field of study and coined the term “Philautiology” as the “Art and Science of Self-Love as Self-Care.” I combined the self-therapy from each of the foundational disciplines I’ve studied to create a highly-effective comprehensive, evidence-based system you can and should PRACTICE anywhere and everywhere, at home or school, alternatively or complimentary, alone orcas an adjunct to your existing teaching repertoire. While I started out studying traditional medicine at Howard University in 1967, my focus for my studies since I returned to college in 2008 to “qualify for the Call to heal,” has been Mindfulness, Self-efficacy, Stress Reduction, Self-Mastery, and World Peace. Like Buddha and Christ and a growing number of empaths, healers and light workers today, I believe the only true path to World Peace is through Self Mastery.Throughout my long career, I have formally converted to and devoutly PRACTICED Christianity, Yoga, Catholicism, Judaism, Buddhism, EST, Tantra, Science of the Mind, and the Infinite Way. I’ve been baptized, born again, christened, gone to the Mikva, and received my Gohonzon. I have consistently PRACTICED all these disciplines and taught various forms of dance and the contemplative, health, and therapeutic sciences since my first yoga certification in 1971. (It’s too long to list here - check my personal page for more details or you can request a curriculum vitae if you’re interested in corporate services), but I’ve managed and owned yoga studios, corporate and government wellness programs, gyms, health clubs, and dance-exercise studios throughout Los Angeles, Bakersfield, and the San Fernando Valley, CA and Denver and Aurora, CO since I experienced illumination and enlightenment in 1979. #Philautiology’s School of Higher Learning is a Collaborative-Cooperative Learning ADVENTURE and Resource Hub focusing on “All Things Therapeutic.” Our goal is to facilitate accessibility to the digital and tangible information, products and service resources you need to be able to take responsibility for and make informed decisions about YOUR health and healing - decisions that, during these most difficult times, may very well mean the difference between life and death, survival or extinction. #Philautiology’s Menu of Courses will include access to On-going digital and On-line Courses, Seminars, Master Classes, Certifications (self-paced and live), and Continuing Education for Professional Practitioners and Lifelong Learners of all evidence-bases Integrative and Contemplative Healing Practices. There’s no denying, the idea of an integrative field of study focusing on LOVE has been a long time coming. I coined and trademarked the word “Philautiology” and it’s derivatives (philautiologist, philautiological, philautiab) and placed them in Webster’s and the Urban dictionaries in 2018, and I’m finally opening the School of Higher Learning with its first series of certification course on April 4, 2020 (4/4/2020).The timing is right for a field of study like this, Beautiful Souls. Healthcare as we know it is in serious flux - The US has the highest healthcare cost per capital in the world, yet we’re the 35th healthiest nation. - Hospitals are closing doors and limiting visitors amid the current Covid-19 crisis. Addiction rates are soaring. There is a “Call-to-Arms” for Cognitive Decline. And, with the closing of our schools for Coronavirus Containment, traditional education has all but shut down. Yet, even with these nerve-wrecking and stressful distractions, lifelong learning and staying informed are more important than ever. We must not only identify our enemies, we must learn as much as we can about ourselves and our enemies to be able to survive, thrive, flourish, and WIN. I’ve known this day was coming for the past 44 years. I’d say The Great Awakening, the Great Convergence, the Paradigm Shift are not changes that are “gonna” come .... they’re Here! I’ve practiced, studied, researched, and learned everything I could to be able to plant the Seeds of Awakening to help others awaken their own latent divine powers and Godspeed their journeys. After nearly 50 years of practice and study, I’ve narrowed the “Practice” of Philautiology down to 7 core “practices” that blend the self-practice elements of each of the 30 disciplines into one of the simplest and most effective systems I’ve ever practiced OR developed - Seven Powerful Practices I use every day of my life and will share with you so you can share with others to heal the world - Certifications will be offered in each module. Additionally, If you are one of the first 111 to join this group, I will make myself available to assist you in finding and writing the right course(s) to showcase your own skills, talents, and beliefs as an instructor in our online platform

Who Are You?   From the moment we are born, you and I receive input from others on who they wish us to be and what labels they believe define us as 'normal'.   While most of these labels are applied to us in the context of caring and support, few of us receive encouragement to question these labels or to possibly re-label our self-image with current and more accurate terminology.  Wellness Psychology offers strong encouragement to inquire through self-learning about who we really are as persons today.

Mirror, Mirror on the Wall-Part 1   Wellness Psychology encourages each of us to more fully understand and appreciate the choices we make in developing and implementing our own individual self-esteem beginning as a child to becoming a senior citizen. Beginning with words from the Book of Proverbs, "As he thinks in his heart, so is he", various approaches are presented to understanding the choices our heart implements during our daily living.  "Love thy neighbor as thyself" is another guideline for study with emphasis on the last two words.  Honesty is often defined as the ability, to tell the truth to others.   Maturity is the ability, to tell the truth to ourselves and, therefore, often tends to be more challenging for many.  Maturity becomes a major goal of the personal retreating process.  Jim Cole's book Facades is used to demonstrate that healthy self-esteem needs a sense of belonging, having worth and value as well as having some competency. Development of our self-views is characterized by "children are the world's best recorders of their world and also the world's worst interpreters of it." The outcome is that many individuals make choices that are inaccurate and lead to unhappiness.

Listening is Loving (Part 2)   One foundation of Wellness Psychology is believing that listening is loving.   Some key aspects of developing a behavior and attitude pattern of listening to self and others include the following:  Listening is a gift that allows another to take what is inside them and bring it out in the open to be seen and understood more fully in a loving, non-judgemental atmosphere. Understanding that each of us has a different view of ourselves and our world, we can be loving by listening carefully to ourselves and each other.

Listening is Loving (Part 1)   One foundation of Wellness Psychology is believing that listening is loving.   Some key aspects of developing a behavior and attitude pattern of listening to self and others include the following:  One skill is the ability to ask myself whether I can tell someone what they have just said.  Was I truly listening to the degree that I really heard the words, saw the non-verbal language, felt the voice inflections and deeper feelings, able to put aside my own thoughts and feelings while seeking understanding, etc.? Dr. Hughey's personal guideline for interacting with others:  I am here to assist you with whatever you need to do for yourself. We like people who care to listen to us.   Active listening takes energy and effort.  It is far more than not talking. Even though our society values the powers that come from speaking, giving the rare gift of listening hospitality to another is a rare and valuable way of conveying our love. Most people like to talk about themselves first, then about their opinions/beliefs followed by talking about other people and last on their preferences is talking about you.
