Episode 61: The Fascinating History of Eastern Elk Eastern Elk once roamed widely across the eastern United States. They lived in the New York Adirondacks and the Allegheny Mountains of Pennsylvania. Elk thrived in Big Bone Lick, Kentucky and the Northwest Angle in Northern Minnesota. Listen and learn about the fascinating history of the extinct eastern elk and some questions that still need to be researched. Historical Accounts William Penn and Samuel De Champlain documented elk in the 1600s. John James Audubon painted a picture of an eastern elk from PA in the 1850s. Vernon Bailey classified them in the 1930s with the Audubon's painting. The Academy of Science Museum in Philadelphia displayed a skull from Potter County in 1853. Remains have been found in the Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge, central Michigan and Cassadega Lake, New York. How Many Eastern Elk Were There? Ernest Thompson Seton predicted that at the time of European contact, there were 10 million elk ranging across North America. This implied that there could have been several million elk in the East. Here are some interesting questions that need more thought. If elk were so prevalent in the East at that time, why weren't they being utilized as a primary food source by Eastern Woodland cultures? Is the story of mass populations followed by European extirpation the whole story? What type of habitat did ancient eastern elk prefer? TRCP Western Media Summit, Bozeman, MT: What You Should Know about the #TRCPSummit: TRCP hosted their annual Western Media Summit in Bozeman, MT this week and East to West Hunting Podcast was there. Listen to this week's 30 minute podcast to get an overview of what you should know about CWD, the 2018 Farm Bill, and gaining access to 9.52 million acres of our public lands that are currently land-locked and inaccessible. Chronic Wasting Disease: Chronic Wasting Disease has now been detected in 25 states across the US and has the potential to devastate deer herds, our hunting legacy, and ultimately conservation & conservation funding. Here are 5 facts worth your consideration: 1. CWD is transmitted through protein substances called prions which are not viruses, bacteria or living matter 2. CWD is a neurological disorder that is best described as looking like "Swiss cheese in the brain" 3. Prions can remain in soil, vegetation and the food chain for up to 16 years 4. CWD is difficult to detect in living animals until its too late - symptoms can take up to 1.5 years to reveal themselves 5. You can do your part by not transporting high risk deer carcass parts like brain and spinal cord matter across states or from regions where CWD is known to currently exist.   Learn how to get started with Adirondack Deer Hunting on this week's East to West Hunting Podcast Show Notes: Adirondack guide Jamie Frasier joins us this week to introduce you to Adirondack deer hunting. Want to learn how to hunt big woods deer? This conversation is a general introduction to getting you started. Topics include: Mentally preparing for Adirondack hunting Setting realistic expectations How much area to hunt and what to generally look for in terms of attributes - topography, cover, water what time of year Jamie and Todd like to be in the woods what we carry in our packs DEC State Lands Interactive Mapper (SLIM) Background Adirondack deer hunting is a unique big woods experience in the East's largest wilderness area. Its different than many whitetail deer hunting experiences across America. There are vast expanses of unbroken forest & road-less areas.  Low deer densities can make for a challenging hunt.  While this can be challenging, it can also be incredibly rewarding when you are successful. Adirondack deer hunting requires that you put all of the outdoor skills you've ever learned into action. This includes navigation, understanding deer behavior, tracking skills, reading sign, and being comfortable miles away from the nearest road. It also requires accepting that you may go home without filling a tag but have an incredible hunting trip nonetheless. East to West Hunting Podcast Episode 21 is now available Developing Your Conservation Land Ethic. Listen to Professor Emeritus Jim Coufal of the State University of NY College of Environmental Science and Forestry explain how to understand and approach Aldo Leopold's Land Ethic. Jim is a past National President of the Society of American Foresters and was instrumental in placing land ethic language in their charter in the 1990s. Background Aldo Leopold's Land Ethic was one of the classic and ground-breaking works of the 20th century conservation movement. Written in the 1930s, Leopold was well ahead of his time in thinking about land as a living organism, encompassing soil, rain, wind, biota, rock, sunlight, and the dynamic energy flows connecting it all. How do you apply those concepts to your conservation ethic in practice? Professor Emeritus Jim Coufal of SUNY ESF explains his thoughts on Leopold's land ethic and how he applied principles and guidelines to help steer his decision making framework. To purchase a copy of Aldo Leopold on Forestry and Conservation: Toward a Durable Scale of Values, edited by Jed Meunier and Curt Meine, click HERE To read the "Conservation Ethics Handbook" that was referenced on this episode, written by the folks at www.conservationethics.org, click HERE Some questions you can ask yourself when thinking about your personal hunting, fishing, and conservation land ethic: 1. Is it true? (a science-based question) 2. Is it appropriate? (a values and ethics based question) 3. Are all the arguments and premises in place (a logic question).
