Remember when Mike Lee's 3.3 million-acre land sales were making headlines, what felt like every few seconds? It was all over social media; every conservation organization was talking about it, and even friends of mine who had never been very civically involved gathered the gumption to call their senators. Well, despite the fact that as a collective, we rallied together to defeat all three of Mike Lee's most recent attempts to sell public lands, Trump's Big “Ugly” Bill passed in the Senate, and within the hundreds of pages of legislation, many public lands attacks remained. While I do my best to cover most public lands news every Friday on this podcast, hearing from others in the outdoor advocacy community can shed light on things we may not have considered and help foster conversations needed to continue this fight. That's why I am excited to introduce Land Tawney to episode 189 of the Outdoor Minimalist podcast. Land is co-chair of American Hunters & Anglers, an energetic, media-based organization built on holding policy makers accountable through fast-paced grassroots advocacy. Tawney is a nationally renowned advocate of public land and wildlife. For a decade, he was president and CEO of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers, where under his leadership, BHA grew exponentially, expanding to 48 states and into Canada, garnering 40,000 members, and building an army of public land defenders. Land has testified before Congress on behalf of the Boundary Waters and has served on numerous federal advisory councils in support of hunting, fishing and conservation. He has held roles with the National Wildlife Federation, where he launched their Vanishing Paradise campaign in support of the Gulf Coast, and the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership. His 25 years of experience as an advocate, leader and sportsman make him just as comfortable in the duck blind and trout stream as he is on Capitol Hill. One proposal in the recently passed "big, beautiful bill" that didn't make it to the finish line was an amendment from Utah Sen. Mike Lee, which would have jump-started a sell-off of federally owned lands. On this episode of Plain Talk, John Bradley, executive director of the North Dakota Wildlife Federation, talked about that victory, and also discussed the place in politics conservation issues often find themselves. "Conservation sometimes becomes the dog that everybody can get behind kicking," he said. Bradley expressed a desire for public lands to become a "third rail" issue that politicians are "terrified to go after," but also acknowledged that there are instances where some sales make sense. He says there is, in existing law, a process for selling or swapping out federal lands, and while he admits that it can be bureaucratic, he also says that it's important that all interested parties are involved in that process. Bradley also discussed his group's recent criticism of North Dakota's congressional delegation's support for using the Congressional Review Act to rewrite federal land use rules that the delegation says are too arduous for the energy industry and other interests. He called the approach "scorched earth," arguing it "wipes that entire process" and assumes D.C. politicians "know better" than local experts. Also on this episode, we discussed the hard feelings between Attorney General Drew Wrigley's office and the North Dakota Ethics Commission, as well as news that millions in federal dollars for after school programs in North Dakota have been frozen. There are "crickets from the congressional delegation in terms of unfreezing this money," my co-host Chad Oban said of the situation. "Crickets from the governor's office to unfreeze this money. Crickets from the superintendent of public instruction." "I understand that [Superintendent Kirsten Baesler] is trying to get a job in Washington, but if our superintendent of public instruction is not screaming and yelling to unfreeze these dollars, I'm not sure she can be doing her job," he added. "Our congressional delegation should be pounding on the door of OMB and the Department of Education getting this money to our kids in North Dakota, but everybody's afraid of Trump," he continued. If you want to participate in Plain Talk, just give us a call or text at 701-587-3141. It's super easy — leave your message, tell us your name and where you're from, and we might feature it on an upcoming episode.

For those of you who have listened to a range of our first 40 something episodes, you know that I think deeply and widely about our human relationship with nature and the more than human world. I love talking to artists and curators about the big, thorny questions they are asking us to think about in their work. I also love talking to adventurers in business and athletics who are pushing the boundaries of their categories. But at some point, we need to buckle down and do the hard work of making sure that we still have the wild spaces that inspire these artists and energize these adventurers. Today's guest is Nick Mucha, Director of Environmental Issues and Strategy at Patagonia. He's also a contributor and one of the editors of the new book from Patagonia “Tools to Save Our Home Planet”. After more than a decade in the non-profit space, Nick was reenergized by attending Patagonia's Tools for Grassroots Activists conference back in 2013. That renewed sense of purpose eventually led him to a desk in Patagonia itself where he works on the conference, with Patagonia's environmental non-profit grantees and on Patagonia's overall approach to environmental issues. In this episode we talk about his path to Patagonia, the recently released book, and the role of environmental activism in the current political environment where many of the gains in the US that environmental activists have achieved are under threat. Coming on the heels of the success of grassroots organizations in getting Utah Senator Mike Lee to remove his provision in President Trump's Big Beautiful Bill to sell off thousands of acres of public lands, this episode is a call to action to keep pushing with budget cuts to departments like the National Parks and Forest Service likely to make it harder and harder to protect these lands. On that point, if you did email or call your Senator or House representative to tell them to fight Senator Lee's provision - thank you, thank you, thank you. This proves that the big tent approach to environmental activist that Nick outlines in the episode works, even though we recorded this episode almost a month ago before Senator Lee's antics. We also talk a lot in the episode about Patagonia Action Works. It is a platform that helps connect Patagonia's grassroots environmental grantees with skilled volunteers who can help them with everything from copywriting to legal advice. It is a platform I am personally passionate about having completed nearly 20 projects through the platform. In recent weeks through Action Works, I had a call with Friends of the Boundary Waters about advertising strategy and with Save the Yellowstone Grizzly about strategy needs and their new documentary “Return of the Grizzly” narrated by actor Jeff Bridges, which is garnering rave reviews by those who have seen it at festivals. I hope you enjoy this episode with Nick and afterward, making sure to pick up a copy of “Tools to Save Our Home Planet” and sign up for a project on Patagonia Action Works.Links Tools to Save Our Home PlanetPatagonia Action Works

In this episode of Fresh Tracks Weekly, we cover a major win for public land advocates: Senator Mike Lee was forced to removed the controversial public land sale language from the "Big Beautiful Bill." While it's a victory for now, Randy Newberg breaks down why this issue isn't going away and where to watch for future attempts to sell off public lands. We also cover several key conservation and public access updates: The EXPLORE Act has officially been implemented, expanding access to outdoor recreation, improving public land maps, and increasing coordination to combat invasive species. A collaborative project in Nevada brought volunteers and conservation groups together to install a new wildlife guzzler in Churchill County, providing critical water resources in desert habitat. The Department of Government Efficiency has canceled grants to the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation, raising concerns over the future of the "Take Me Fishing" program. Pheasants Forever has enrolled a new landowner into South Dakota's PATH program, opening nearly 30,000 acres of high-quality habitat to public hunting and recreation. Pennsylvania is on the verge of lifting its longstanding ban on Sunday hunting, with HB1431 awaiting the governor's signature. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In this fresh episode of Talk Dirt To Me, Logan and Bobby Lee open up the listener mailbag and dive into a great question about whether modern farming and breeding are pushing the limits of what God intended for His creation. It's a respectful challenge that sparks a lively conversation about how far agriculture has come, and where it might be going next. Of course, it wouldn't be Logan and Bobby Lee without some real-world laughs, so they swap stories about the never-ending circus that is Facebook Marketplace and how “dealing with people” online always keeps them humble (and entertained). Then they tackle the hot topic of Senator Mike Lee's public land sell-off proposal. Should public land stay in public hands? Bobby Lee's perspective may surprise folks who think they know where he stands. Introduced by Senator Mike Lee (R‑UT), the provision initially called for selling 2–3 million acres across 11 Western states, with up to 250 million acres labeled as “eligible” for disposal. Though the Senate parliamentarian recently struck it from the reconciliation bill, Lee plans to reintroduce it in narrower form, targeting BLM lands near growing cities. Braxton explains why this fight matters to hunters, ranchers, local communities, and anyone who cares about public access, habitat, and heritage—and what citizens can do to stop it. In the midst of one of the greatest threats our North American public lands have ever faced, we are seeing hunters and outdoors men and women alike coming together and taking a stand against Utah Senator Mike Lee's greedy attempt to sell off what does not belong to him. In a special episode release, we are joined by John Stallone from HOWL for Wildlife and Jesse Johnson; an avid public land owner to discuss this very issue. Senator Lee's efforts are far from any honest effort to create affordable housing or assist with national economic relief. Instead it is a vicious attempt to rob the American people of what is rightfully theirs under the cloak of conservatism, with underlying motives that are only self-serving. We dive deep into the nuts and bolts of this public land crisis in this episode, and several other issues. In this episode, Brady, Trail, and Nate Bare dive deep into one of the most important conversations in western hunting right now—public land access and the threat of public land sales. They break down the current status of Mike Lee's land grab legislation. The initial version just got booted from the Senate's budget package, but Senator Lee is still trying. Brady, Trail, and Nate Bare unpack how public pressure caused Lee to pivot slightly, but the reworded version could still impact BLM lands across the West. The guys cover what that really means for public land hunters, how you can stay in the know, and why it's important to push back.Urge lawmakers to oppose public land sales: https://www.trcp.org/action-alert/urge-lawmakers-to-oppose-public-land-sales/

This is a collaboration between Your Mountain and Randy Newberg's Hunt/Talk Radio Podcast. On June 24th, the Senate Parlimentarian determined that Senator Lee's piece of the reconciliation bill mandating the sale of 2-3 million acres of public lands violated a procedural rule and stripped it from the overall bill. Not to be dissuated, late on the evening of June 25th, Senator Lee followed through on his promise not to give up. He submitted a revised bill that would mandate selling 612,500-1.225 million acres of BLM lands in the West. Dave, Nephi, and Randy Newberg talk late into the night to break down what's in this revisied version of his land sell off bill, whether it can survive the Parlimentarian review, whether there are enough votes in the Senate to pass it, what the House might do, and what you should do. Spoiler: This remains a really bad proposal.

Representative Mike Lee has introduced a bill to the Senate that would sell “underutilized” federal public land. This has sparked widespread debate over the cost-effectiveness of the move and the moral implications of selling off protected national property and wildlife reserves. Next, Congress is just one month away from its month-long recess—what have they been up to? Well, not much… yet they're supposed to be working for us. Finally, a brief update on Iran and Israel, who continue to bomb one another with no resolution in sight. Will the United States get involved in this war? All this and more on today's Untamed!
This week, Mike Lee can't look Amy Klobuchar in the eyes, Tucker Carlson plays cat and mouse with Ted Cruz, Theo Von gets a political wake up call, and tensions rise in the Middle East despite the U.S., Israel, and Iran having such fantastic leaders. Plus comedy legend Larry Charles of Seinfeld, Borat, and Curb joins to tell million dollar stories and 10 dollar jokes. And Chinedu Unaka and Adam Lustick fall in love with ChatGPT, the NBA finals and Trump's gigantic flag poles.Upcoming shows: crooked.com/eventsFor a closed-captioned version of this episode, click here. This week on We're Still Here, Julie Francella and Simon Moya-Smith join John to reflect on Juneteenth and the deep, often overlooked history of Black-Indigenous solidarity—from Afro-Indigenous freedom fighters to interwoven kinship systems that resisted colonial violence together. They discuss Julie's latest Substack post exploring the Seven Grandfather Teachings and Senator Mike Lee's latest political maneuverings, while also taking thoughtful and inspirational calls from listeners. The conversation also touches on the horrific legacy—and ongoing reality—of forced birth control and the continuing sterilization of Indigenous women in Greenland, Canada, and the United States. Plus, they unpack Trump's recent withdrawal from a key salmon protection agreement with native tribes. Then, they celebrate Simon's beautiful contribution to the brand new book "A Steady Brightness of Being: Truths, Wisdom, and Love from Celebrated Indigenous Voices" which is available now from Penguin Random House.Simon Moya-Smith - instagram.com/simonsaidtakeapic threads.com/@simonsaidtakeapicJulie's Substack “The Fire I Keep” https://substack.com/@juliefrancella?r=1u83jb&utm_medium=iosCheck out Julie's artwork on her website - juliefrancella.com See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
In the wake of the political assassination of Minnesota lawmaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, prominent right-wing figures moved quickly to assign blame. Utah Sen. Mike Lee pinned the killings on “Marxism.” Elon Musk pointed to the “far left.” Donald Trump Jr., the president's son, said it “seems to be a leftist.”But the facts quickly told a different story: The suspect, 57-year-old Vance Boelter is a Trump supporter who held radical anti-abortion views. “There's an entire right-wing media machine aimed at pushing disinformation around breaking news events and specifically attributing violence to the left,” says Taylor Lorenz, independent journalist and author of “Extremely Online: The Untold Story of Fame, Influence, and Power on the Internet.” “You see this over and over and over again, no matter who is perpetrating the violence.” “The reality is that the vast overwhelming majority of political violence in recent years has come from the right,” adds Akela Lacy, The Intercept's senior politics reporter. “It basically treats that fact as if it's not real, as if it doesn't exist,” she says — a dynamic that then fails to address the root causes. This week on The Intercept Briefing, host Jordan Uhl talks with Lorenz and Lacy about how online disinformation is distorting public understanding of major events — from political violence to immigration to potential war with Iran. In this chaos-driven ecosystem, the right — and Trump especially — know how to thrive. You can hear the full conversation of The Intercept Briefing on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen. You can support our work at theintercept.com/join.
