Minnesota Attorney Shelley Torvinen finally found us in the big city (Chicago) after a long drive to our virtual studio*. With a promise of hot chocolate and plenty of encouragement, we coaxed her from her car, walked her through our weed-strewn parking lot, and down the stairs past a creaky iron door, to a rusty office chair. We cleared away a pile of spiders and dust, gave her a seat at the table with us, and then applied our usual psychological pressure. In this Episode 44, recorded on March 12, 2025 by the light of a Coleman gas lantern and between bites of Norwegian lutefisk (in honor of our Minnesota guest,) Shelley did not wilt under our interrogation. It's clear that Shelley, despite laboring in the trenches for over 30 years, has not lost her enthusiasm and compassion for the practice of family law. We spent an hour jabbering about situations, stories, hints and creative ideas -- and family law and procedures in three states (Illinois, Minnesota and Wisconsin.) Hopefully, our non-lawyer listeners will find our wide-ranging discussion to be useful and helpful!Attorney Shelley Torvinen practices in Northern Minnesota and Wisconsin, handling family-law cases in courtrooms and courthouses big and small, far and wide. DO YOU KNOW THE WAY TO MIDMARAIS? An AudioplayIn 1994, a young student named Morgan takes over as a lighthouse keeper on Elk Island, far out in the Boundary Waters of Northern Minnesota. Their partner Elsinore is supportive of their decision to leave school and take this job, but Elsinore is hopeful they can convince their introverted other half to return to Midmarais High School just one more time for the Prom. However, strange things are happening in the north. Ominous warnings of a storm, a sudden interest in ghost towns, and even sightings of Ambrose, the seemingly-vaudevillian ghost keeper have been reported. And, of course, why is it so important that the lighthouse must be lit every single night, despite there being nothing bigger than a fishing boat most of the time on the waters surrounding Elk Island? Travel beyond boundaries in this vaporwave journey, with the sardonic citizenry we meet along the way. Tannice McCoy grew up in a mining family, but she never imagined herself in the mining business. Today she's the president and general manager of NewRange Copper Nickel. Jenna Lehti never imagined herself in the mining industry either. She's a member of the Bois Forte band of the Ojibwe tribe in Northern Minnesota, and grew up on a reservation adjacent to the Iron Range, a collection of mining districts around Lake Superior. Today, she's the tribal relations advisor for NewRange. Together, they're taking a proactive approach to harnessing tribal support for the critical minerals boom. NewRange is a Minnesota company pursuing a new copper, nickel, and cobalt mine in the northeastern part of the state, called NorthMet. It would supply minerals for a wide range of clean energy technologies. But under a previous owner, the project faced setbacks – in part because of a lack of engagement with local tribes. “I think part of that came from a lack of understanding of the tribe's sovereignty and their water quality standards,” said McCoy. In this episode, produced in collaboration with NewRange, Tannice McCoy and Jenna Lehti sit down with Stephen Lacey. They explain what has changed with the NorthMet project, the importance of working with tribes, and the future of critical minerals mining in America. “It's really about how we are helping the tribes move forward and progress,” said Lehti. This episode was produced in collaboration with NewRange Copper Nickel.
