We are back with part two of Prion Diseases or Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies. Kuru is a TSE/Prion disease that has affected the native people's of Papua New Guinea during the last century or so. I don't want to spoil just how it came about, but it does involve some taboo--and thankfully no longer practiced--funerary rites. The Australians who were observing and studying them just after WWI discovered the Fore people there were dying out quickly (the women and children especially) of some strange illness that led them to shake and tremble violently, become confused, and even laugh deliriously before dying. There native peoples had long believed it to come from sorcery, but the Australians and an American physician with many a flaw to discuss here were not content with such an answer. Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD) was identified in patients in the early 20th century and the symptoms were similar to other diseases now known to be prion diseases: dementia, hallucinations, stumbling, falling, loss of coordination, death. This seemed to be spontaneous and that was that. Then Europe's cattle began to show signs and symptoms that were alarming. They too loss their coordination, became agitated, held their heads strangely, fell over, and died. Cows who were ill were slaughtered and their meat and tissues made it into the food chain. In Cows, the illness was identified as Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE), though some journalists referred to it as "mad cow" disease. While the government agencies tried to keep it a secret to avoid the meat economy from going under, humans became infected via the ingestion of BSE infected meat. This illness in humans was identified as variant Creutzfeldt-Jacob Disease and it caused chaos and panic among those who had been buying and eating beef. America would face a similar battle with similar government agency actions and there are some (scientists included) who have begun to believe that CJD is never sporadic but likely always related in some way to infected meat. Let's see why they think as much. Finally, we need to discuss what is happening to deer, especially here in North America. Chronic Wasting Disease showed up in Colorado in deer in the late 1900s (1970 onward) and it has since spread to elk, moose, reindeer and other such animals throughout the US and Canada. These animals are dying of a prion disease that likely jumped from sheep as Scrapie into deer as CWD. How could this have happened and what could it mean for the future?Thank you to all of our listeners and supporters! Welcome to our talk on prions and prion diseases. I feel I cannot do this topic justice by just telling you about the terrifying and thankfully rare diseases caused by infectious proteins. So we are going to talk about what a prion is, how humans discovered them, and how scientists and medical professionals identified what they were (relatively recently in fact). This episode specifically deals with Scrapie, a prion disease found in sheep and Familial Fatal Insomnia, a hereditary disease found in humans (though, it may be sporadic in even rarer cases). Both of this fatal illnesses have been around at least a few centuries by now, but were often so rare they were not thought much of or misdiagnosed and forgotten about. Forgotten about until humans got greedy for more and better sheep in the case of Scrapie; for humans, until descendants of "cursed" families began to see familiar and terrifying symptoms popping up all around them, possibly for their own future as well. Imagine an illness that stops you from sleeping until you die. It slowly ravages your body, your mind, and leaves those around you either afraid or distant as they shun you entirely. Let us discuss prions, where they come from, the diseases they cause, and how they cause them. Sweet Dreams, Poison Friends. Thank you to all of our listeners and supporters! BirdCare Aotearoa is a wild, native bird hospital that works to rehabilitate sick and injured birds back into the wild. For their upcoming event: ‘Bird Heros,' a part of EcoFest 2025 on the 6th of April, the workshop will look at the best practices on rescuing wild native birds, and will include a tour of their bird hospital, which is not usually open to the public. For this week's Green Desk, Producer Leilani spoke to the Hospital Manager at BirdCare Aotearoa, Pooja Dorle, about the rehabilitation processes of birds within their hospital ahead of their next workshop. Fellow Green Desk Producer Liam, and News and Editorial Director Joel, went to the previous workshop over the weekend, and spoke to the Chair of the organisation, Kevin Furgeson, and volunteer Marina, and had a tour of their facilities. Thanks EcoFest! BirdCare Aotearoa also has a fundraiser running to shed light on seabirds affected by street lights and brightly lit buildings across the city, affecting their migration patterns and causing birds, such as the protected Petrels, Shearwaters, and Prions, to fall and injure themselves. To support their clinical rehabilitation practices, you can support their campaign on givealittle.

There is a fight in the Legislature between the North Dakota Game & Fish Department and a group of hunters and landowners over regulations aimed at curbing the impact of chronic wasting disease on North Dakota's wildlife populations. But is that fight really about CWD? Or is this another front in the culture war spurred by (in some respects not entirely unreasonable) frustration with Game & Fish regulations? Dusty Backer is an activist (I don't use that word pejoratively, though he objected to being described that way) who joined this episode of Plain Talk to discuss the issue. He argues that concerns over CWD are feigned by state officials, federal officials, and academics as an avenue toward "controlling people." "Prions don't exist," he told us (CWD is described by health officials as "a prion disease"). He said that the state's efforts to regulate bait hunting, implemented as one method to control the spread of CWD, are unreasonable and an affront to property rights. Also on this episode, we've heard a lot about Gov. Kelly Armstrong's property tax plan, but Rep. Ben Koppelman, a Republican from West Fargo, has an alternative he says is better, though he admits that he likes broad portions of Armstrong's proposal. "The cap in the governor's plan I agree with," he said, referring to a 3% limit on growth in local budgets which he says the governor took from him. "I'm honored he would take that idea and put it in his plan." "Where I disagree is on the relief portion," Koppelman continued, saying that his plan delivers more tax relief on primary residences more quickly than Armstrong's plan by buying down a percentage as opposed to providing a fixed credit. He says there is political risk in not delivering tax relief swiftly. "I think we're going to set ourselves up for another measure," he said, referring to Measure 4, a proposal to abolish taxes on property values which voters defeated by a wide margin last year. Koppelman argues that, under his plan, a broader crossection of property owners will feel relief on a shorter timeline than under the governor's plan. "The idea is everyone should get to zer [property taxes] together," he said. One of the most mysterious and frightening entities in medicine are prion diseases — rare neurodegenerative disorders that are usually infectious in nature but involve not bacteria or viruses, but proteins. Prions are misfolded proteins that can induce normal proteins to become misfolded as well, resulting in a chain reaction that leads to irreversible brain damage and death. What makes prions alarming is that they are incurable, can incubate for decades in a person's brain without symptoms, and are usually associated with 100% mortality within months to a few years. Sonia Vallabh, PhD was a recently-married lawyer in her early career when she witnessed her mother's baffling sudden health decline and death. Her mother was ferried from hospital to hospital, yet dozens of doctors could not figure out why she was seemingly succumbing to rapidly progressive dementia at the age of 52. It wasn't until after her death that Vallabh discovered the cause was a genetic prion disease. Subsequent testing revealed that Sonia Vallabh herself had inherited the same genetic abnormality. Determined to find a solution, Vallabh and her husband Eric, a transportation engineer, decided to retrain as biomedical scientists in a race to cure her before it grew too late. The couple now leads a prion research lab at the Broad Institute at MIT and Harvard. They are also the co-founders of the nonprofit Prion Alliance. Over the course of our conversation, Vallabh opens up about what it was like to accompany her mother in her last months of life, the psychological toll of dealing with a fatal medical mystery, how she lives each day with an awareness of how ephemeral life is, what prion diseases are and what makes them so difficult to treat, what makes her optimistic about the future of her work, and more. Birds called prions have an especially creative approach to getting their food. They pass seawater through their mouths and filter it to catch tiny animals such as krill and other small crustaceans. It's similar to how baleen whales feed, leading to the prion's nickname: the whale-bird. The sides of their bills have comb-like structures. Small food items get trapped in the combs as water flows past. In Greek, the word “prion” means saw, which refers to the bird's highly specialized mouth.More info and transcript at BirdNote.org. There are several news reports about the increase of prions. Prions are protein molecules folded the wrong way – they can hide in the body until one day they can ravage the brain. An MRI scan of a brain infected with prions resembles a sponge with gaping voids of activity where the proteinic corruption has spread. Inconclusive as prion studies are, each of them assumes three premises to be true: infections are always fatal, there is no cure, and they are contagious. Its spread is a result of civilizational structure, which is controlled by no one, so that no one may intervene in the historic march of the prion, which is equivalent to the equally uncontrollable march of humanity toward annihilation. Tonight on Ground Zero (7-10pm, pacific time), Clyde Lewis talks with Dr. Reg McDaniel and Dr. Kevin McCairn about LET PRIONS BE PRIONS. New clinical trials for treatments of an always fatal brain disease, and what happens with pests when a conventional and organic farm are neighbors First up on this week's show, a new treatment to stave off prion disease goes into clinical trials. Prions are misfolded proteins that clump together and chew holes in the brain. The misfolding can be switched on in a number of ways—including infection with a misfolded prion protein from an animal or person. Staff Writer Meredith Wadman talks with host Sarah Crespi about new potential treatments—from antisense nucleotides to small molecules that interfere with protein production—for these fatal neurodegenerative diseases. Next on the show: Freelance producer Katherine Irving talks with Ashley Larsen, associate professor of agricultural and landscape ecology at the University of California, Santa Barbara, about the effects of organic farms on their neighbors.
