There is a fight in the Legislature between the North Dakota Game & Fish Department and a group of hunters and landowners over regulations aimed at curbing the impact of chronic wasting disease on North Dakota's wildlife populations. But is that fight really about CWD? Or is this another front in the culture war spurred by (in some respects not entirely unreasonable) frustration with Game & Fish regulations? Dusty Backer is an activist (I don't use that word pejoratively, though he objected to being described that way) who joined this episode of Plain Talk to discuss the issue. He argues that concerns over CWD are feigned by state officials, federal officials, and academics as an avenue toward "controlling people." "Prions don't exist," he told us (CWD is described by health officials as "a prion disease"). He said that the state's efforts to regulate bait hunting, implemented as one method to control the spread of CWD, are unreasonable and an affront to property rights. Also on this episode, we've heard a lot about Gov. Kelly Armstrong's property tax plan, but Rep. Ben Koppelman, a Republican from West Fargo, has an alternative he says is better, though he admits that he likes broad portions of Armstrong's proposal. "The cap in the governor's plan I agree with," he said, referring to a 3% limit on growth in local budgets which he says the governor took from him. "I'm honored he would take that idea and put it in his plan." "Where I disagree is on the relief portion," Koppelman continued, saying that his plan delivers more tax relief on primary residences more quickly than Armstrong's plan by buying down a percentage as opposed to providing a fixed credit. He says there is political risk in not delivering tax relief swiftly. "I think we're going to set ourselves up for another measure," he said, referring to Measure 4, a proposal to abolish taxes on property values which voters defeated by a wide margin last year. Koppelman argues that, under his plan, a broader crossection of property owners will feel relief on a shorter timeline than under the governor's plan. "The idea is everyone should get to zer [property taxes] together," he said. Meditons ensemble : Dans un monde souvent agité par l'incertitude, les défis et les soucis quotidiens, trouver la paix intérieure peut sembler impossible. Cependant, Jésus nous offre une paix surnaturelle, différente de celle que le monde promet. En nous tournant vers Dieu dans la prière, nous pouvons recevoir cette paix qui garde nos cœurs et nos pensées, même au milieu des tempêtes. Conclusion Dieu désire que vous viviez dans Sa paix parfaite, peu importe les défis auxquels vous faites face. En développant une habitude de prière sincère et constante, vous ouvrirez la porte à cette paix divine qui transformera non seulement vos émotions mais également votre perspective sur la vie. Prions : "Seigneur Tout-Puissant, je viens devant Toi avec mon cœur parfois troublé et inquiet. Merci pour Ta promesse de paix qui dépasse toute compréhension. Il y a vingt ans environ, cette phrase a changé ma vie : "Vous ne possédez pas parce que vous ne demandez pas à Dieu." Ce petit verset m'a permis de découvrir la puissance révolutionnaire de la prière persévérante à cette époque de ma vie, j'étais stressée par beaucoup de choses. J'essayais de faire grandir mon ministère, d'obtenir ceci ou cela de mon mari, d'éduquer mes enfants à se comporter de telle ou telle manière. J'essayais de faire faire aux autres les choses que je voulais qu'ils fassent, en essayant de tout contrôler. Comme vous pouvez l'imaginer, cela ne marchait pas ! J'ai fini par devenir une chrétienne épuisée et frustrée, jusqu'à ce que je réalise un jour que vivre par mes propres forces ne menait à rien. Il fallait que j'apporte mes problèmes à Dieu. En d'autres termes, il fallait que je prie plus ! Lorsque nous comprenons l'amour et le plan de Dieu à notre égard, nous commençons alors à réaliser les portes qu'il souhaite nous ouvrir. Mais la condition pour en arriver là est de discuter régulièrement avec lui, de prendre le temps d'écouter sa voix et de grandir dans une relation plus profonde avec lui. Dans Matthieu 7.7, Jésus nous dit : "Demandez et l'on vous donnera, cherchez et vous trouverez, frappez et l'on vous ouvrira." La prière est souvent notre dernier recours lorsque nous n'avons plus aucun espoir, recours que nous abandonnons rapidement lorsque la réponse n'est pas instantanée. Aujourd'hui, j'aimerais vous encourager non seulement à prier, mais aussi à prier avec persévérance. Arrêtez de stresser en essayant de provoquer les choses par vous-même. Abandonnez tout à Dieu dans la prière. Souvenez-vous qu'il a promis de se laisser trouver par ceux qui le cherchent. Prions et cherchons-le de tout notre cœur.

One of the most mysterious and frightening entities in medicine are prion diseases — rare neurodegenerative disorders that are usually infectious in nature but involve not bacteria or viruses, but proteins. Prions are misfolded proteins that can induce normal proteins to become misfolded as well, resulting in a chain reaction that leads to irreversible brain damage and death. What makes prions alarming is that they are incurable, can incubate for decades in a person's brain without symptoms, and are usually associated with 100% mortality within months to a few years. Sonia Vallabh, PhD was a recently-married lawyer in her early career when she witnessed her mother's baffling sudden health decline and death. Her mother was ferried from hospital to hospital, yet dozens of doctors could not figure out why she was seemingly succumbing to rapidly progressive dementia at the age of 52. It wasn't until after her death that Vallabh discovered the cause was a genetic prion disease. Subsequent testing revealed that Sonia Vallabh herself had inherited the same genetic abnormality. Determined to find a solution, Vallabh and her husband Eric, a transportation engineer, decided to retrain as biomedical scientists in a race to cure her before it grew too late. The couple now leads a prion research lab at the Broad Institute at MIT and Harvard. Birds called prions have an especially creative approach to getting their food. They pass seawater through their mouths and filter it to catch tiny animals such as krill and other small crustaceans. It's similar to how baleen whales feed, leading to the prion's nickname: the whale-bird. The sides of their bills have comb-like structures. Small food items get trapped in the combs as water flows past. There are several news reports about the increase of prions. Prions are protein molecules folded the wrong way – they can hide in the body until one day they can ravage the brain. An MRI scan of a brain infected with prions resembles a sponge with gaping voids of activity where the proteinic corruption has spread. Inconclusive as prion studies are, each of them assumes three premises to be true: infections are always fatal, there is no cure, and they are contagious. Michael has a long history of trying to understand the role that water plays in fundamental biological operations from structural assembly to diseases like Alzheimers and Prion disorders. Presently, he is hard at work on a biological theory of everything where water plays out the role of central actor in biological processes from form to consciousness. Our conversation today begins with Michael's journey into the water rabbit hole, exploring the strange way that water structures itself within cells. We work toward an understanding of water as a photo-electrically, an electro-statically sensitive molecule capable of mechanically altering cellular function in response to conscious and external signals. For a decade, Sonia Vallabh has been living with the knowledge that she has a genetic mutation that will likely cause in her the same disease that claimed her mother's life in 2010. Upon discovering she had the mutation, Sonia and her husband made a massive pivot: They went from careers in law and urban planning to earning their Ph.D.s, and founding a prion research lab at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. On today's episode, Sonia and Eric talk with Short Wave's Gabriel Spitzer about what it's like to run a lab with one's spouse, cope with the ticking clock in Sonia's genes, and find hope in a bleak diagnosis.

Prions are biological anomalies – self-replicating, not-alive little particles that can misfold into an unstoppable juggernaut of fatal disease. Prions don't contain genes, and yet they make more of themselves. That has forced scientists to rethink the "central dogma" of molecular biology: that biological information is always passed on through genes. The journey to discovering, describing, and ultimately understanding how prions work began with a medical mystery in a remote part of New Guinea in the 1950s. The indigenous Fore people were experiencing a horrific epidemic of rapid brain-wasting disease. The illness was claiming otherwise healthy people, often taking their lives within months of diagnosis. Solving the puzzle would help unlock one of the more remarkable discoveries in late-20th-century medicine, and introduce the world to a rare but potent new kind of pathogen.
