Monday, 15 November 2021, 7 – 8pm Freemen out with the Tribe: Exiles for Christ from Saints Patrick to Kilian Online Lecture by Dr Alexander O'Hara, Department of Celtic Languages & Literatures, Harvard University in association with the Trinity Long Room Hub. The event will be chaired by Dr Ciaran O'Neill, Deputy Director of the Trinity Long Room Hub. This year marks the 15th centenary of the birth of Saint Columcille/ Columba of Iona, born in 521 in Co. Donegal into the royal Uí Néill dynasty. In 563 he left northern Ireland for northern Britain where he established a monastery on the island of Iona in the Hebrides where he died in 597. Columba and his monks from Iona played a key role in the Christianisation of what would become Scotland and northern England. Columba was considered to be a peregrinus pro Christo, 'an exile for Christ' who left his homeland for the uncertainty of life in a foreign country following the biblical precedent of Abraham. This lecture frames Columcille within the development of this concept of exile from the time of Saint Patrick to the eighth century and how this played an important role in the development of Irish ethnic identity in the seventh century. About the speaker Dr Alexander O'Hara is a Research Fellow in the Loyola Institute, Trinity College Dublin. He is a historian of Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages specialising in monastic history and theology, the medieval cult of the saints and medieval Latin literary culture. He is the author of Jonas of Bobbio and the Legacy of Columbanus: Sanctity and Community in the Seventh Century (Oxford University Press, 2018), editor of Columbanus and the Peoples of Post­-Roman Europe (Oxford University Press, 2018), and translator of Jonas of Bobbio: Life of Columbanus, Life of John, and Life of Vedast (Liverpool University Press, 2017). He is co-editor of St Sunniva: Irish Queen, Norwegian Patron Saint (Bergen, 2021), a collected volume on the medieval cult of the Irish saint Sunniva, patron of Bergen and Western Norway. Vestlandet er en landsdelsom består av fylkene Rogaland, helt sør, Vestland og Møre og Romsdal helt i nord. Det er altså tre fylker på Vestlandet. Den største byen på Vestlandet ligger i Vestland fylke og heter Bergen. Bergen er den nest største byen i Norge. Bergen ligger omtrent midt på Vestlandet. Byen ligger rett vedkysten og har mange fjell rundt seg. Det er veldig vakkert i Bergen. Bergen er den største byen på Vestlandet med 270,000 innbyggere. Stavanger er den nest største byen på Vestlandet. Stavanger ligger i Rogaland, litt lenger sør enn Bergen. Det bor 130,000 i Stavanger. Ålesund, med 66,000 innbyggere er den største byen i fylket Møre og Romsdal, den nordligste delen av Vestlandet. Vestlandet er en veldig viktig landsdel i Norge. Mange av de viktigste hendelsene i norsk historie skjedde på Vestlandet. For eksempel kom de fleste vikingene som reiste vestover fra Norge til Storbritannia, Island og Grønland fra Vestlandet. Mange norske konger i middelalderen bodde på ulike steder på Vestlandet. Bergen var lenge den største byen i Norge og hovedstaden i Norge. Oslo blei først større enn Bergen på 1800-tallet. Bergen har altså lenge vært den største og viktigste byen i Norge. På Vestlandet er det veldig mange fjell og fjorder. Den lengste fjorden i Norge ligger på Vestlandet. Den heter Sognefjorden og er 205 km lang. En fjordarm i Sognefjorden heter Nærøyfjorden. En fjordarm er en liten del av en fjord som går i en litt annen retning enn hovedfjorden. Nærøyfjorden er altså en liten del av Sognefjorden. Nærøyfjorden er et vakkert landskap med store og spissefjell og en nydelig fjord. Faktisk er den så fin at den er på UNESCO sin verdensarvliste, ei liste med steder, bygninger og ting som er spesielt viktige å ta vare på. Andre kjente steder på Vestlandet er Geirangerfjorden, en av de mest besøkte stedene i Norge, og som også er en del av UNESCO sin verdensarvliste. I Rogaland ligger den kjente Preikestolen, eller Pulpit Rock som den heter på engelsk. Det er en fjellformasjon som stikker litt ut av fjellet. Denne fjellformasjonen former en plattform med over 500m fritt fall på sidene. Det finnes altså veldig mange fine steder på Vestlandet.

These old farmhouse strains of yeast have been around for generations—and longer—as brewers in Western Norway pass them from one generation to the next. Lately, IPA brewers have repurposed them to make bright, juicy IPAs, but the possibilities extend far beyond hoppy styles. Today we’ll dig into kveik and farmhouse brewing. Earlier this year, I had the pleasure of meeting Lars Marius Garshol for the first time. Before then, like much of the internet, I had followed along with Garshol's adventures via his eponymous website, Larsblog, where he has been documenting his beer travels and curiosities since the early 2000s. Though he works as a software engineer, Garshol is particularly devoted to the subject of farmhouse brewing in Europe—so much so that he has written several books on the topic, including this year's award-winning release, "Historical Brewing Techniques — The Lost Art of Farmhouse Brewing." In his spare time, he also helps organize Norway's primary farmhouse beer festival, the annual Norsk Kornølfestival; collects yeast samples; and even collaborates with researchers on scientific papers. His work is varied, but Garshol is probably best known for spreading the word about kveik, Western Norway's farmhouse yeast family, now celebrated across the world for its extraordinary abilities—and that's how I came to meet him. Lars was a major source for both of my long-form features on kveik and farmhouse brewing for GBH, the first of which came out in the summer of 2019, and the second of which was published last month. That most recent article arose out of a trip I took to Voss, Norway in February, and that's where Lars and I finally crossed paths, when I attended a talk he gave as part of a kveik symposium. Today's conversation kicks off when I ask Garshol about this year's edition of the Kornølfestival, which was held entirely over Zoom. We also discuss his book, chat about why even seasoned beer drinkers might be perplexed by farmhouse beer styles like Vossaøl and Stjørdalsøl, and he sheds light on how vast the world of farmhouse brewing really is. There's a lot to dig into here—and a fair amount of jargon—but this conversation was illuminating to me in at least 10 different ways, and I hope it is for you, too. In this episode we are once again going to return to Western Norway, and explore what may have motivated young Norwegians to go a Viking. In the past we have established the material motivations behind going a Viking. Acquiring Gold and Silver allowed the leaders of expeditions to attract followers and cement political power. For the followers, such easily portable, durable wealth was extremely useful when conducting marriage negotiations.  Today, we look at the less tangible impacts of going a Viking. Namely - the fame, prestige and increased status which came from returning home from a successful journey abroad.  Along the way we will learn about Odin and Mead of Poetry, Explore poems from the Icelandic Sagas and even dip our toes into the depths of the Archeological Record. In this episode we explore the politics of Western Norway at the Dawn of The Viking Age.   Our aim is to discover the nature conflict, cooperation and competition between the chiefdoms and petty kingdoms of the area which would later become Norway. To do this we look at the nature of power as expressed by Western Norwegians themselves, in the form of Skaldic poetry.   Along the way we look at battles, ravens and lavish gifts. We will explore a Viking Age battle field as well as a chieftain's longhouse. By the end of it, we will have a good idea why aristocratic Norwegians decided to go a Viking around 800 CE.

In this episode we explore the history of landscape and peoples of Western Norway at the Dawn of the Viking Age. We will follow the coast of Norway on a  journey with a Norwegian Chieftain, and discuss slaves, tenant farmers and petty Kings. Along the way we will determine whether or not overpopulation and lack of arable land were the determining factors behind the initial Viking Raids in the early 800s CE.
