It's interesting how much the IDF's constant ceasefire violations in Gaza and Lebanon line up with the way people familiar with Israeli culture say Israelis like to test everyone's boundaries to find out exactly how much they can get away with. Reading by Tim Foley.
I was moving the harp the other day and once again, it occurred to me just how much stuff we have to carry around with us. Granted, I move my harp all the time for rehearsals and concerts - it's a big Lyon Healy Salzedo model harp - so you would think I'd be used to it by now. I guess I am, mostly; I don't have to think about what goes in the car, and my harp bag is always ready to go. But when I start counting the number of trips I have to make between my car and the concert hall in the pouring rain, I start wishing for a Star Trek transporter. But recently, while I was moving the harp, my bench, my stand, and my bag, I had a flash of insight; we harpists carry a lot of baggage with us. Not a revelation, I know, but it led my mind to consider the other kind of baggage we harpists carry, the stress that accumulates in our practice and performance. That's a kind of baggage that piles up in a sneaky way until one day, we find it has overwhelmed us. The physical stress that is part of practicing, the mental stress that can come with intense focus and the emotional stress of wanting to do our best when we play can add up to a potentially toxic level. The worrisome part is we rarely acknowledge the stress as it is building little by little. There is simply a moment when we know we can't take any more, often as we are in the final stages of preparing for a performance. That's when we want to be at our most focused, but our mind and body are shutting down, trying to protect us from too much stress. I'm better at managing stress than I used to be, but stress used to be baggage that I always carried with me to some degree. It came and went in cycles, and I'm embarrassed to admit that it never occurred to me that this wasn't or shouldn't have been normal. I don't want to be all doom and gloom here. What I want to talk about today is how to recognize that sneaky cycle of stress and release yourself from it. We'll talk about the hidden symptoms of stress and how to recognize them and how to keep them from coming back. It's time to ditch the excess baggage and feel free to play. The Barr Brothers, the indie-folk-rock band from Montreal, have just released their first album in eight years called Let It Hiss. Brad Barr, the band's singer, guitarist and songwriter is a versatile collaborator and risk-taker who revels in making unusual sounds. The latest songs can be folk-leaning, or may draw from the blues and American songwriting; they represent a reckoning with vulnerability, truth, with helpings of gratitude and humility. And while Andrew couldn't be here for this session, Brad Barr, along with Stuart Bogie on sax and clarinet and Shahzad Ismaily on bass play (and improvise a bit) on some songs from the new album, in-studio. Set list: 1. Naturally 2. Another Tangerine 3. Run Right Into It

The losing streak ends at four games as the Magic desperately win a game in Charlotte. There were some positive signs from that performance, but most of the early part of this season has been full of undisciplined and downright listless stretches that have cost us games. We went 2-4 in October when it should've been 5-1. And Charlotte is not a good team. We gave away the Hawks game because we couldn't defend in crunch time. That was Game #2 of the season. There's an extra microscopic view on Jamahl Mosley, who is still in the 2003 Doc Rivers danger zone. Tonight brings a temporary relief. Jeff Weltman is not firing himself for our roster flaws, so it's Jamahl on the hot seat. Doc got fired eleven games into the 2003-2004 season when we were 1-10. That was also a jersey rebrand season. This is season #5 of Jamahl and he still doesn't know how to call momentum timeouts consistently. Jamahl still refuses to get thrown out of games when refs are royally screwing his roster over. Pace and offense are not the problems right now, our defense is horrendous. Giving up 107 in Charlotte is a step in the correct direction. Way too much bad body language at times. Mosley is 6 games from surpassing Doc Rivers for the 3rd-most Magic games coached in franchise history. It's still not a given Jamahl is going make it to that milestone. Orlando picked up the team contract options for Anthony Black and Tristan da Silva, but declined Jett Howard's. Jett will now be a free agent in the summer. The Magic will see 10 of their games broadcast over the air locally in Orlando and Tampa. That's very exciting as far as potentially breaking away from regional sports networks goes. All of that and more! #LetsGoMagic Warning: Adult Language

5. The Raven: Mythology, Intelligence, and Return AUTHOR: Stephen Moss BOOK TITLE: 10 Birds That Changed the World This excerpt examines the large, highly intelligent Raven (a crow on steroids). Its deep mythology stretches from the earliest civilizations, including Norse legend, where Odin's ravens (Huginn and Muninn) flew around the world as his eyes and ears. The myth states that if the ravens leave the Tower of London, the kingdom will fall. Historically regarded as harbingers of doom and persecuted as scavengers, ravens are currently making a successful, adaptable comeback in Britain. 1849
Logistics is an unorganized industry. Not a lot has changed in a very long time, and this industry is ripe for disruption. One of the big problems in India (and globally), is the transport of empty containers. This is what happens:(1) Once a container lands in India, it goes to the Importer's premises by road and it is unloaded.(2) Once unloaded, the empty container goes back to a depot, where it is inspected and then it is re-used for Export.(3) Once again, post inspection - the empty container travel by road to the Exporter's premises. This delays exports. Stretches working capital for shipping lines. No one wins. And this is precisely the problem that MatchLog is trying to solve. It tracks empty containers and links importers & exporters. They inspect the empty containers so that it doesn't have to travel all the way back to depots.MatchLog works with various stakeholders in the Logistics industry and through their platform have been able to drive efficiencies for all players involved.I had a blast picking Harsh's brain about all things Logistics and how they built MatchLog through several iterations. From the iconic racing track in the Netherlands we see an epic weekend of racing with "surprises" all around!! Marc Marquez, who said himself he wasn't planning on doing well, despite qualifying on the 2nd row managed to once again prove why he deserves to remain in MotoGP!! MotoGP standings for the 2025 championship seem to be almost completely decided as a big wreck from Alex Marquez left him with a DNF and some surgeries to clear up his injuries! From 5th on the grid we saw the rising Aprilia star Marco Bezzecchi pull a 3rd place and 2nd place in the sprint and race, proving that the mighty Aprilia might in-fact still be a contender this season!! Follow that with a surprising top 5 finish from not one but two KTM's and we had quite the brand spread in the top finishing spots!! Sadly the tale was not to tell from our main Yamaha rider Fabio Quartararo, who could not follow up his hot qualifying lap with a healthy race finishing place!! Podcast Show Notes: Scoliosis Treatment with Dr. Tony Nalda Episode Title: Do Spine Stretches Work for Scoliosis? Episode Summary: Stretching can feel like a natural response to tightness and discomfort—but for scoliosis patients, not all stretches are created equal. In this episode of Scoliosis Treatment with Dr. Tony Nalda, we dive into the question: Do spinal stretches actually help scoliosis? You'll learn the difference between improving flexibility and achieving structural correction, why stretching the wrong way can do more harm than good, and how to safely support your spine through scoliosis-specific movement strategies. What You'll Learn: ✅ Stretching and Scoliosis: What's the Real Benefit? Stretching may help reduce pain and improve flexibility But stretching alone won't reduce scoliosis curves, because scoliosis is a structural condition ✅ Understanding Spinal Rigidity in Scoliosis As the spine curves, asymmetrical muscle tension develops Tight muscles often serve a protective role, stabilizing the spine against progression Loosening the wrong muscles may actually accelerate curve progression ✅ Best vs. Worst Stretches for Scoliosis Patients✔️ Best: Stretches customized to your specific curve pattern Prescribed by scoliosis-trained professionals Combined with strengthening exercises to balance asymmetries ❌ Worst: Generalized or symmetrical stretches Compressive movements Stretches that pull on the curve in the wrong direction ✅ Why Generic Stretches Can Be Harmful Many scoliosis curves require asymmetrical treatment Stretching without understanding your curve type can worsen symptoms or deformity True improvement often comes from a multimodal program including: Stretching Therapy Rehab Corrective bracing ✅ What Should You Do Instead? Seek out a scoliosis specialist who can guide you through a safe, effective program Don't aim for “symmetry” at all costs—aim for balance based on your unique curve Use stretches as a supportive tool, not a standalone solution Key Takeaway: Stretching may relieve discomfort, but only scoliosis-specific exercises—prescribed by trained professionals—can truly support spinal health and structural change. Avoid generic programs and focus on personalized care that addresses your spine's three-dimensional complexity. Resources & Links:
Last month, UC Berkeley researchers published a study about how they tricked the eye into seeing a new color. It was a highly saturated teal, a peacock green, the greenest of all greens. The scientists produced this color, which they named “olo,” by shining a laser into the eye and stimulating one type of color-sensitive photoreceptor cells called cones. Austin Roorda, a professor of optometry and vision science at Berkeley's School of Optometry, developed the optical imaging platform they used in this project. It's called Oz, after the story The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. In the 1939 film adaptation, the lead character, Dorothy, goes from her black-and-white farm in Kansas to the color world of Oz.“Ozvision is really directly tied to the book and to the movie where the Emerald City is this unearthly green color,” said Roorda. “The intent and the aspiration was to elicit that same kind of response by going from a natural-colored world to a supernatural-colored world by a direct stimulation of these cones.” It has enormous potential, he said, to transform how we understand and treat eye diseases, and to expand the way we see the world around us.Listen to the episode and read the transcript on UC Berkeley News (news.berkeley.edu/podcasts).Music by Blue Dot Sessions.Photo via Unsplash+This is the last episode of our Berkeley Voices series on transformation. In eight episodes, we have looked at how transformation — of ideas, of research, of perspective — shows up in the work that happens every day at UC Berkeley.
