So hart gesellschaftliche Umbrüche für die direkt Betroffenen sind: Kämpfer, Bürger, Mitläufer, Täter, gibt es zusätzlich Kollateralgeschädigte, die wir nicht vergessen wollen: die Connaisseure der im Umbruch unvermeidlich untergehenden Kulturprodukte, der originären Kunst der überwundenen Verhältnisse. Hechelte man als Zoni Prä-89 noch jedem Hauch subversiven Kunstwerks hinterher: das nur im Westen erschienene Buch, der Film, der es gerade so durch die Zensur geschafft hatte und als kompromittiertes und meist ziemlich langweiliges Stück Zelluloid mit den immer gleichen Schauspielern deutlich braver war als erwartet, interessierte all das 1990 niemanden mehr. Dreißig Jahre später bekommt mich selbst ein guter Kundera kaum hinter dem Ofen hervor, sorry, Radim, zu viel Neues, Interessantes ist zu lesen, zu verstehen.Das gleiche Phänomen könnten wir nun, fünfunddreißig Jahre nach dem Mauerfall in den USA beobachten, wo aus einer fehlerhaften Demokratie ein waschechter Polizeistaat gemacht werden soll und keinen Redneck, keine Bluestate-Intellektuelle oder gar oppositionelle Politiker scheint es groß zu interessieren und wenn sie mal den Anschein erwecken, bleiben sie ratlos im Angesicht der Faschisten, als ob es keine Erfahrungen gäbe, wie mit solcherlei Vandalismus umzugehen sei.Das ist furchtbar für alle, die nicht weiß genug sind und von frisch angeheuerten Schergen der Ausländerbehörde ICE auf offener Straße entführt werden, furchtbar für die Angehörigen der Engagierten, die beim Versuch, das zu verhindern, erschossen oder schwer verletzt werden.Wie bekomme ich jetzt bloß die Kurve zur Kunst?Fangen wir noch mal an: War es das mit der liberalen Demokratie in den USA? Kommt jetzt der Polizeistaat von New Hampshire über Minnesota bis San Francisco? Und: war der nicht schon immer? Fing es nicht mit dem Sheriff an, damals, vor zweihundert Jahren, der den Bandenführer eigenhändig aufknüpfte, statt auf den Friedensrichter zu warten, der den Schänder am Ende freispricht? Und ließ zur selben Zeit nicht sein Kollege in den Südstaaten die Rollos runter, weil vor seinem Fenster der Plantagenbesitzer einen Sklaven teeren und federn ließ, weil sich seine Tochter in ihn verknallt hatte und die beiden abhaun wollten? “Was ist neu an Polizeiwillkür?”, kann man fragen.Neu ist die Haltung, vertreten von der amtierenden Regierung, dass das alles genau so in Ordnung war und gerne wieder so sein soll. Selbst im grimmigsten Western der die Geschehnisse verarbeitet, kommt am Ende der Friedensrichter und tadelt den Sheriff, damit der Zuschauer weiß, wo law her- und order hinkommt. Und 1861 wurde vom Norden ein ganzer Bürgerkrieg losgetreten, damit die Lynchjustiz im Süden ein Ende habe. Heute korrumpiert die Regierung die Justiz und erklärt zur Legende, dass es im Amerikanischen Bürgerkrieg um die Abschaffung der Sklaverei ging, erklärt stattdessen in Republikanischen Bundesstaaten eine Mindeheitenmeinung zum Curriculum, die versucht den Bürgerkrieg zum Kampf um die Rechte von Bundesstaaten zu machen.“Ok,” so die Frage, “wir sehen den Umbruch, aber was hat das mit der amerikanischen Kultur zu tun?”Die Antwort: “Rambo I - First Blood.”Der Vietnamrückkehrer Sylvester Stallone wird dort von einer Horde selbstgerechter Dorfbullen mit viel Munition und wenig Skill in Grund und Boden geschossen und es ist von Anfang an klar, auf wessen Seite man steht, wer der Gute ist, wer die Bösen sind. Und das wäre heute anders! Denn da bezeichnen Trump & Co. den auf offener Straße hingerichteten Krankenpfleger im Veteranenkrankenhaus, Alex Pretti, als Aufständigen, als Unruhestifter, als “would-be assassin“ gar. Nichts davon ist wahr. Die dummen Bullen aus Rambo I sind an der Macht. Das versaut den Filmgenuss, zu krass ist das Umkippen der Realität und kein Happy End in Sicht.Nun ist der Spin des ersten Rambo-Films - Hero: gut, Bullen: böse - ja eher ungewöhnlich. Normalerweise sind die FBI-Beamten clever, der Sheriff gutmütig mit Schmerbauch und großem Herz, und der Anwalt gewieft, wie er das Justizopfer raushaut. Aber, leider, auch so herum funktioniert die Kulturverlusttheorie: der ganze s**t ist vor dem Hintergrund von ICE-Konzentrationslagern und dem sinnlosen Erschießen von Bürgern einfach nicht mehr konsumierbar. Zumindest geht mir das so. Denn selbst wenn sich Kunstschaffende nicht dem Diktat der gesellschaftlichen Stimmung beugen (wie sie es im Allgemeinen wenigstens versuchen) und weiterhin die Heldenepen von Law und Order singen, die nötige kognitive Dissonanz, um das vergnügt zu konsumieren, kann ich nicht aufbringen.Ein paar Beispiele:Der letzte Reacher war nicht nur schlecht geschrieben, auch inhaltlich ist er nicht mehr haltbar. Wie kann man dem Buch die Story abnehmen, dass die Korruption im militärisch-industriellen Komplex durch den heldenhaften Einsatz moralisch aufrecht gehender Muskelpakete gestoppt werden kann, im Angesicht von Oracle, einem Privatunternehmen, das über die Jahre fast eine halbe Milliarde Dollar an die aktuelle Regierung spendete und im Gegenzug der US Air Force ihre Cloud verkauft? (Wer denkt, das sei ein Verlustgeschäft, hat das mit dem Technofeudalismus noch nicht verstanden.)Und selbst der letzte Michael Connelly, ein Lincoln Lawyer Thriller, der sich um die Verantwortlichkeit von AI Firmen für ihre Produkte und deren Konsequenzen kümmert und bei dem natürlich der gute Anwalt gewinnt, wirkt unglaubhaft, wenn sich die vorbildgebenden Firmen mit Millionenspenden an ihren Tanzbär passende Gesetze kaufen, die genau das im richtigen Leben verhindern. (Immerhin ist das Buch gut geschrieben und für ein solches Thema exzellent recherchiert).Gefühlt rutschen hier zwei Drittel der amerikanischen Popkultur in die Spalte “unlesbar”. Was bleibt da noch zu konsumieren? Vielleicht sowas:Oberflächlich nicht ganz so Fun wie ein brainless thriller von Lee Child wäre da zum Beispiel dieser Klassiker von Joseph Wambaugh: “Hollywood Station“. Erschienen in 2006, erzählt er als Episodenroman aus dem Alltag im titelgebenden Revier stationierter Streifenpolizisten. Das Ganze spielt Anfang der 2000er und die LAPD steht immer noch unter Beobachtung, nach den Misshandlungen Rodney Kings und den anschließenden Unruhen im Jahr 1992. Wir sagen zunächst “richtig so” und lernen sofort, dass nichts im Leben so eindeutig ist, wie man es auf dem Plenum, respektive am Tresen, postuliert, selbst hier in Germany. Die Lebensrealität so manchen Fußballfans jeglicher Vereinsaffilität ist das zustimmende Hochhalten der A.C.A.B.-Tapete samt obligatorischem Unvergessensgesang, um auf dem Weg vom Auswärtsspiel zum Bahnhof dann doch ganz froh zu sein, dass zwischen ihr und den Hansa-Idioten eine Hundertschaft steht. In dieser Hundertschaft steht dann so mancher gewaltbereite Neonazi, ein einzelnes schwarzes Schaf, keine Frage, absolut, das sagt ja auch die Polizeigewerkschaft, und neben dem faulen Apfel so mancher Idealist, der einfach der Fußballoma den unversehrten Nachhauseweg garantieren will. Dieses Spektrum, in letaler, erlebt die Los Angeleser Streifenpolizistin mit ihrem Partner in den seedy Hinterhöfen des Hollywood Boulevard und wir aufgeklärten Linksversifften müssen ein bisschen hart im Nehmen sein, wenn wir die Meinung der “boots on the ground” so ganz ungefilter zu lesen bekommen: Meinungen, nein: Urteile, man könnte fast sagen: Vorurteile, zu Minderheiten, zu Politikern, zu politischen Aktivistinnen, die wir glattweg als “rassistisch” abtun können, aber wenn die Meinungshabende dann vom schwarzen Pimp ein Auge ausgeschlagen bekommt und wir das alle haben kommen sehen, hinterfragen wir uns dann doch ein bisschen ergebnisoffener und exakt das ist es doch, was Literatur leisten soll. Ich als erklärter Todfeind der Kurzgeschichte bin natürlich gehandicapt ob der Struktur des Buches, aber da sich die Ministories am Ende zusammenfinden, ist das annehmbar. Es war die Zeit von “Smoke” und “Coffee and Cigarettes”, da konnte Joseph Wambaugh gar nicht anders.Deutlich neuer ist das (fast) Erstlingswerk des in den USA lebenden Tschechoslowaken Alexander Boldizar: “The man who saw seconds...”. Es ist noch nicht ins Deutsche übersetzt (er schreibt auf Englisch), aber das wird kommen, das Ding hat Preise gewonnen, es ist prädestiniert dafür, in einen erstklassigen Hollywoodthriller portiert zu werden und es ist frappierend aktuell, beginnt es doch mit einer klassischen Episode von Polizeiwillkür und endet in… man darf nicht spoilern, man darf nie spoilern, aber hier bei diesem Buch ist es noch verbotener als sonst. Nie wurde ein Buch geschrieben, welches von einem unrechtmäßigen Polizeistop in der New Yorker U-Bahn so exponentiell eskaliert. Man fragt sich alle Absätze, wie weit der S**t noch gehen soll, was denkt sich Boldizar als nächste Eskalationsstufe aus und man liegt immer daneben. Es ist ein “blast” in allen Wortsinnen und es ist, wie gesagt, hochaktuell.Hoffen wir, dass diese beiden Beispiele nicht die letzten einer untergegangenen Kultur sein werden. Ja, die, nennen wir sie: “Polizeikultur” in beiden Wortsinnen, als gelebte Handlung und als geschriebene Verarbeitung derselben, war nie frei von Dingen, die man kritisieren konnte, musste und vielleicht haben wir, und, wichtiger, die Amerikaner das nicht getan, was zweifellos zum heutigen Klima in den USA führt. Aber, sie war fun, sie war spannend, sie war interessant und man hatte als Europäer immer den bequemen Platz im Ohrensessel, von dem man aus sagen konnte “Ne... diese Amis, das könnte hier nie passieren!” und vielleicht nehmen wir die Ereignisse im beschriebenen und realen “Dort” zum Anlass, dass das “hier” auch so bleibt. Wenn der Preis dafür ist, dass man mal wieder ein anderes Genre lesen muss, bezahle ich den traurig grummelnd. This is a public episode. Anleihehandel und Metalle wurden bereits wieder aufgenommen, und wie angekündigt startete der Handel mit Aktienfutures um 8:30 Uhr Eastern Time erneut. Danach zogen die Futures sofort wieder an – der Dow zeitweise +100 Punkte, der Nasdaq +0,4 %, der S&P 500 +0,2 %. Die Störung trifft auf einen ohnehin volatilen Handelstag: den Freitag nach Thanksgiving, traditionell mit sehr dünnen Umsätzen und entsprechend größeren Kursausschlägen. Gleichzeitig endet heute der Monat November – ein schwacher Tech-Monat, der aber trotzdem mit einer starken Woche endet: Der Dow über +2 %, der S&P rund +3 % und der Nasdaq etwa +4 %. They are 2-1 against teams currently over .500 with wins over the Bills and Bucs and a loss to the Steelers. We walk through what they actually do well on offense and defense and where the cracks are that a desperate team can hit.Then we move into Giants Keys to Victory. Step 1 is mental: you cannot play scared of a 10-2 record when you've already gone toe to toe with the Lions, Packers, and Bears; Oh, My!. Step 2 is hoping Dart is back and healthy, because he's the spark plug who can extend plays and give Wan'Dale, Hodgins, and Theo chances to keep their recent surge going. Step 3 is all about new defensive coordinator Charlie Bullen. This D has to look energized and aggressive instead of folding in the 4th quarter. The Giants have blown too many double digit leads this year, and a young QB like Maye will make mistakes if the pass rush actually gets home instead of letting him live in clean pockets all night.From there we zoom out for a full Thanksgiving and Black Friday preview. In the early game, Packers at Lions is strength versus strength: a Lions offense around 29.6 points per game against a Packs defense allowing only 18.4 and just 3.9 yards per carry on the ground, which matters with a banged up Detroit offensive line and Gibbs trying to hit big runs. The late afternoon matchup is Chiefs at Cowboys, with a Dallas offense that can lead the league in yardage facing a Chiefs defense giving up about 18.3 points per game and thriving on third and 4th down. Bengals at Ravens at night is all about the run game, with Baltimore's 4.9 yards per carry rushing attack staring at a Bengals defense that gives up 33.3 points, 426 yards, and 156 rushing yards per game. On Black Friday, Bears at Eagles gives us a high scoring Bears profile averaging 52.8 total points per game against an Eagles team that allows 20.5 points per game and turns red zone trips into TDs roughly three out of four times. Bears has won four straight by one score, so we argue whether this is another tight finish or the week the streak dies.Through all of it we keep circling back to the Giants: what Bullen can steal from these defenses, how Dart and the offense can borrow concepts from the best attacks, and whether this game tells us the roster is closer to competing or still miles away. More than 80,000 Kiwi smokers need to quit their habit before the end of the year to meet the Smokefree 2025 goal, but a public health professor says there's no chanceOur world-leading Smokefree Aotearoa 2025 legislation barely survived to see this year, and the reality of addressing tobacco use is "like whack-a-mole"More than 80,000 Kiwis must quit smoking before the end of the year to meet the goal of Smokefree 2025, which was launched 14 years ago.But Professor of Public Health Chris Bullen tells The Detail that it is unlikely to happen - "I don't believe so, sadly"."The evidence suggests we are not heading in the right direction fast enough," says Bullen, who is also the director of the National Institute for Health Innovation."We have got more work to do in 2026 and beyond."The smokefree goal aims to have less than 5 percent of the population smoking by December, but the latest data reveals there are still about 300,000 daily smokers across the country.Bullen says part of the issue is, last year, the Coalition government repealed three areas of the Smokefree law, most importantly the denicotinisation of tobacco products (where the nicotine is basically taken out of cigarettes) and banning the sale of tobacco products to those born after January 1, 2009."I think we could have gotten to the goal under the previous legislation, but that was repealed by the current government."The lack of policies to support and motivate more people to think about quitting means there's an awful lot of effort on the ground that's got to go on to get 84-, 85-thousand people to quit smoking between now and the end of the year and I just don't see it happening fast enough."He says the denicotinisation strategy needs to be revisited, and a smoke-free generation approach needs to be adopted to encourage young people not to start smoking."Other countries picked up the baton when we dropped it, and I think that would lock in the very low levels of smoking in our young people, forever, and this would be a real boost for their future prospects."The Detail also speaks to Bullen about illegal tobacco and vaping, and the role they play in Smokefree Aotearoa.A tobacco industry-funded report has just revealed that 25 percent of cigarettes sold in New Zealand are from the black market, smuggled into the country, largely from China and South Korea, and available on Facebook Marketplace, at construction sites, and in some dairies…Go to this episode on rnz.co.nz for more details

From Healthcare to Embodiment Coaching Like many healers, Jen's journey into her current work wasn't linear. She spent 18 years in healthcare as a first responder and nurse before realizing the toll it was taking on her mental and emotional well-being. Seeking relief, she turned to yoga—not initially as a formal practice, but simply as a space where she could breathe and exist. Over time, yoga became a bridge to deeper embodiment and self-understanding. Jen shares how she first approached yoga as something to “do” rather than to be with, but as she continued her practice, she began to understand its power. Her curiosity led her to study trauma, movement, and somatic healing, eventually integrating these into her work. Embodying Presence: The Path to Authentic Connection One of the most striking things about Jen is the grounded presence she brings into a room. But as she shares, this wasn't always the case. Ten years ago, her energy was scattered, pulled in different directions. Through deep self-work, understanding her own nervous system, and aligning her life with natural cycles, she found her way to greater embodiment. Jen talks about the Ayurvedic principles that guide her work and how she helps clients reconnect with their bodies in personalized ways—whether through movement, breathwork, creative practices, or even gardening. The key, she emphasizes, is allowing space for clients to step into what feels right for them, rather than prescribing a rigid method. Creativity as a Gateway to Healing In our conversation, we explore the idea that creativity is an essential part of healing. Jen reflects on how creativity shows up in her life—not just in art or movement, but in the way she holds space for people. She also shares an insight from a friend who is a professional artist—how scheduling dedicated creative time was a game-changer for her. Reclaiming Community: A New Approach to Motherhood Support One of the most powerful stories Jen shares is about how she and her extended family came together to support her stepson's wife after childbirth. In a culture that often leaves new mothers isolated, they created a circle of care—cooking, holding the baby, and offering emotional support. Jen describes the moment when her husband's ex-wife handed him their grandchild—a silent, yet deeply healing exchange that spoke to the power of community and shared history. This experience reinforced for me something that my parent coach has often said - that the nuclear family is a failed experiment; we are meant to raise children and support each other in community. And then again, in some ways it is much the same.Architecture school was 4 long years of hard work and all-nighters that, at the time, we wore as a badge of honor. It seemed that there was never enough time to do what we were being asked to accomplish. Or maybe I was trying to do more than was necessary to fulfill the learning objectives. I certainly felt I had a lot to prove since it had taken me a couple of years to finally get accepted into the program after not doing particularly well at calculus and linear algebra in junior college. I also took extra math in fifth grade. Yeah… math wasn't my thing.Or at least it wasn't my thing until I had a good tutor in second year who helped me understand that I was visual spatial learner and if I could draw or make models of the problems they would all make sense. Seeing algorithms… my eyes would roll back in my head.Anyway…I stuck with it, took every drawing class I could, loved design studio and managed the engineering. I was proud to graduate from the McGill School of Architecture school, go on to study for my licensing exams - another series of all-nighters – pass and be able to enter the profession of reserved title and call myself an “Architect.”I was proud to wear the traditional pinky-finger white gold ring with 7 notches in it representing the 7 Lamps of Architecture by John Ruskin. Ruskin was an English polymath – a writer, lecturer, art historian, art critic, draughtsman and philanthropist of the Victorian era. The Seven Lamps were seven principles which Ruskin viewed should be reflected in a building: Sacrifice, Truth, Power, Beauty, Life, Memory, and Obedience. The white gold ring was a tradition of McGill 4th year architecture graduates, as symbols of having legitimately put the time in, done the work on the design thesis and survived it. In those days we drew our projects by hand and built models in the workshop. We got our hands dirty. There were 4 years of design studio projects that, in the real world, would take months or more, and we were trying to get them done in weeks. Back in those days, the mid 80's, Computer Aided Design was emerging as a new tool. I remember that we had to take a class in computer programming – I think it was Fortran or something – and we had dinosaur computers that some students were playing around with to create drawings.In the mid-80's email didn't exist, or not to students in any case,Cell phones had just arrived with the Morotrola DynaTec 8000 which was the size of a brick and weighed almost the same, We used this thing called a fax machine that magically sent images across the telephone wires and could print it out on the other end on thermal paper (which you didn't want to leave on the window sill, because it would fade away),The blue print shop was an ammonia fumigated workplace where diazo prints, as they were technically called,  were actually blue hence the term “blue prints.”We used pencils or ink pens on paper or mylar, and if you screwed up you actually used an eraser to rub the error out and you drew it again.I remember one of my first summer jobs in an architecture office, I was quickly assigned renderings due to my love of drawing. I had made some mistakes when plotting out a perspective using the Plan Projection Method, and I was erasing what I had drawn. One of the principals came by my desk, stopped, watched and then remarked “hey… we hired you to draw not erase…” and then walked away.Nice…Our go to reference books were by Francis D.K Ching – ah… the drawings and hand lettering in “Architecture Construction Illustrated”, or “Form Space and Order”And… the social media, google, Ai and computer generated 3D modeling didn't exist.It wasn't until around 2005 or so that Facebook became popular and the iPhone came out in 2007.Then the world seemed to shift on it axis and life as we know it was on the path towards Artificial General Intelligence and all of the miraculous - and scary - things we are now so familiar with shaped our everyday lives. The world sped up and the way I learned in university was both a thing of the past and then again it wasn't.Many of the ways architecture is taught are similar to my experience. Courses are taught as individual, disaggregated subjects, that graduates have to piece together in actual life experience. A wholistic approach to learning the discipline of architecture is not generally the norm. Which when you consider all of the components of a building it is a challenge since everything is connected to everything and the amount of ‘everything' in a building can indeed be overwhelming if you try to consider it all at the same time.The number of professional and skilled labor disciplines is enormous. And most of us simply see buildings as ‘fait a complis' – completed works - with no idea what actually had to be wrangled to go from concept to completed construction.Going back to social media and the internet for a moment, students now have never known a time without ubiquitous access to the world's information through the internet. The tools for designing buildings have changed.One could say it is easier to some degree now. Computer programs manage all of the interrelationships between engineering, architecture, building systems, interior design elements, as well as the cost estimating, construction management and more.It is also easier to rely on tools to think for you and disconnect you from discernment – one of the key features of the architects' role in puting a building together.And this is where my guest on this episode comes into the frame. Trevor Bullen is the Dean of the School of Design at Dunwoody College of Technology. Trevor is an award-winning architect with over 25 years of professional experience. He has significant international experience, working on a wide range of architecture, landscape architecture and planning projects in Europe, the Caribbean, and the United States.In addition to his role as Dean, Trevor has taught architectural design at the Boston Architectural College, the City College of New York as well as the University of Minnesota and is a frequent guest critic at schools of architecture nationwide.He believes in introducing real world problems into the architecture curriculum so that students begin to understand the relationships between theory and practice as well as that good projects are built on good relationships between architects and their clients.He suggests to students that new tools should not supplant their discernment – That key to their success as a professional will be their ability to consider the multitude of factors in building design, determine what matters and to not let the remarkable tools that are afforded us through the development of computer aided design relace their voice.Trevor pushes the idea that great advances in visualization with Ai should not be and end in itself but a means to that end. The tools should be a part of the process not the end point in the evolution of a concept and that their personal voice, point of view, vision should not be lost in the use of the app.And in Trevor's experience, oh what a voice students of today have. Projects are influenced by subjects of racial equity, restorative justice, indigeneity, political orientations, sustainability and climate change and more.And this, it seems to me, is what architecture has always been partly about – the 3-dimensional representation of cultural ideologies. Architecture and ideas are inseparable. Buildings stand as testaments to what we believe, want to influence and aspire to. They are much more than the materials that bring them into being or the space planning at accommodate human interactions. They are epicenters of human relationships imbued with stories and meaning. That said, it brings to mind the famous quote by Marshal McLuhan - "The medium is the message." McLuhan suggested that the way information or an idea is communicated, like in a television broadcast, newspaper, social media post or I dare say architecture, has as much impact on the message itself as the content of the message.I think that this suggests that the form of communication, even if the form of architecture, significantly influences how the message is perceived by the audience.In architecture parlance – I think Mies van der Rohe phrased it as “Form Follows Function.” If beyond utility, architecture is made to convey ideas, then its Form, Space and Order are brought together as a 3-dimension embodiment of them.Thinking back to my architecture education, the tools of today's professional practice have drastically changed and some of my classmates when on to other careers other than being architects, but the education we got then gave us a understating of the interconnectedness of things and the ability to solve multilayered challenges while wielding stone, steel, glass, light all forged into a unified whole by learned discernment. Teaching discernment is not just in the service of good building design and construction, it is a life skill as emerging students navigate the volatile, unpredictable, complex and often ambiguous world that face them beyond their architecture degree.             *                         *                         *ABOUT DAVID KEPRON:LinkedIn Profile: linkedin.com/in/david-kepron-9a1582bWebsites:  https://www.davidkepron.com    (personal website)vmsd.com/taxonomy/term/8645  (Blog)Email: david.kepron@NXTLVLexperiencedesign.comTwitter: DavidKepronPersonal Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/davidkepron/NXTLVL Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nxtlvl_experience_design/Bio:David Kepron is a multifaceted creative professional with a deep curiosity to understand ‘why', ‘what's now' and ‘what's next'.
