Don and LaShelle discuss the different styles of parenting they grew up with and how they attempted to combine their parenting styles in raising their children. While Don was raised to be grounded when breaking the rules, LaShelle was raised to discuss the behavior and the possible outcomes of the behavior with the family. We find out that LaShelle still needs to ground Don from time to time. LOL! Continuing the madness, Don and LaShelle delve deeper into ADD including the creativity and impulsivity that comes along for the ride. Don discusses some of the ways his creativity/impulsivity would and still does get him into trouble, including how he does not have a “filter” when it comes to saying things out loud. Including, in true Don fashion, showing off his vast music knowledge by singing some of his responses and comments! LaShelle discusses Don’s projects around the house and why we never have a place for company to sit. While Don and LaShelle have not come up with a cure for ADD, they have come up with systems to help with ADD. After several trial and errors, they have knowledge of several styles of systems. They have found systems that work for Don and there is bound to be some that work for you! Our friend Mike returns to help us wade through some of the more controversial claims made about the new vaccines and try to come to grips about what the next few years will look like. In Episode 084, Don and Derek discuss the elephant in the room and the impact of ageing on their exercise routines. We are all ageing and there is not stopping that process. It’s no surprise that exercising when you are in your twenties looks a lot different than when you are in your forties or fifties. While Don and Derek may still be in great physical shape, and may even be more generally fit than when they were younger, there are still many challenges to staying healthy and fit as you get older. While aerobic and endurance abilities may be improved or maintained, speed and elastic abilities are very difficult to hold onto as you get beyond your thirties and forties. Strength can be improved and maintained, but as testosterone levels begin to decline dramatically, fatigue can be much more prevalent.Don and Derek discuss how they have managed to stay ahead of the curve with their fitness and athletic abilities despite the ageing process. They also point out the realities of getting older and how you have to embrace new limitations with a sense of humor. There are specific reasons why you can no longer do the things you so easily managed as a younger person. One of the big reasons is self-preservation and survival. But, there are still many things you can do to keep your mind and body in optimal working order if you just take the proper time, care and effort. The D&D Fitness Radio podcast is available at the following locations for downloadable audio, including: iTunes – https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/d-d-fitness-radio-podcast/id1331724217iHeart Radio – https://www.iheart.com/podcast/dd-fitness-radio-28797988/Spreaker.com – https://www.spreaker.com/show/d-and-d-fitness-radios-showYou can reach both Don and Derek at the following locations: Don Saladino: http://www.DonSaladino.com Twitter and Instagram - @DonSaladino YouTube - http://www.youtube.com/donsaladino Derek M. On February 22, before the recent bear market and during the very early days of the Coronavirus, I was scheduled to speak at Vestory’s Annual Retiremeet. I went a day early so I could interview two very good friends I'd worked with for more than 10 years, Tom Cock and Don MacDonald. The three of us used to do a weekly radio show together. It was always fun and we had great guests like John Bogle, Knight Kiplinger, Larry Swedroe, Scott Burns, Robert Kiyosaki and Joe Granville, to name a few. In 2009 Tom and Don left the Merriman firm to found Vestory a registered investment advisory firm. In this podcast we discuss the challenges of helping the do-it-yourself investor. While Don mentions the importance of staying in front of the investors on a regular basis, they felt one of the most difficult decisions for DIY investors is determining their risk tolerance. They offer an interesting risk tolerance test that I took. It has some very good questions. I suggest you give it a try as it is more specific than most. Questions I ask: How can you tell if you are working with a fiduciary? What do tell investors about expectations for long term returns? Why are stocks a good investment for the long term? How much should young people be investing? How can mutual funds offer funds without any expense? What do you look for in a good investment advisor? Don MacDonald is also author of Financial Fysics: How Money and Investing Really Work. For those who know Don’s outspoken mistrust of stock brokers, you will be shocked that I tricked him into saying something nice about stockbrokers. Tom and Don do a weekly radio/internet show, "Talking Real Money", as well as a daily podcast of the same name. I hope you enjoy this podcast and check out their daily podcast. In fact, they have a call-in phone line where you can leave a question anytime. Give it a try: Call 855-935-TALK. In Episode 75 of the D&D Fitness Podcast, Don and Derek dive into the subject of maintaining a brick and mortar fitness business during the COVID-19 shut-downs and the slow return to normalcy once businesses re-open and try to recover. While everyone wants things to return to normal, nothing will ever be ‘normal’ again and businesses need to restructure to become more resilient. While Don has been slowly building his online and social media presence, others may not be in the position to pivot as easily during this economic downturn and the distancing public. The discussion revolves around how businesses – particularly in the sport and fitness realms – must evolve quickly to survive this current pandemic, and any similar future predicaments. The D&D Fitness Radio podcast is available at the following locations for downloadable audio, including: iTunes – https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/d-d-fitness-radio-podcast/id1331724217iHeart Radio – https://www.iheart.com/podcast/dd-fitness-radio-28797988/Spreaker.com – https://www.spreaker.com/show/d-and-d-fitness-radios-showYou can reach both Don and Derek at the following locations: Don Saladino: http://www.DonSaladino.com Twitter and Instagram - @DonSaladino YouTube - http://www.youtube.com/donsaladino Derek M. Episode 12: Building Materials Industry | Prep Your Company for Sale with Don Wharton While we typically interview business leaders who operate exclusively in the building materials industry, the latest episode of GWP’s Constructing Brands podcast deviates slightly from the norm. Don Wharton joins us to share his experience with selling companies. He provides a president’s perspective on the entire process and lays out invaluable insights for members of the C-suite in building materials companies. Don has served as the Vice President, Finance of Allsteel, President of Gunlocke, and President of Vycom and Scranton Products. While Don may come from a background in finance, Don has a broad scope of the building materials industry as well. Maximize the Investment When Don started in the building materials industry with Vycom and Scranton Products the company was owned by a private equity firm. Eventually, it was sold to another private equity firm, but for that to happen, Don and his team had to meet a number of objectives. The goal in this scenario is to maximize the investment before reaching a transaction or a change in ownership. While the existing teams usually operate under a thesis with a set blueprint, changes in the market and other unforeseen events call for decisive action and creativity. Become More Effective and More Agile Don’s experience, there are a number of unique factors that must be considered before doing any type of deal in the building materials industry. Aside from meeting the standard metrics and KPIs that serve as a baseline for valuation, Don goes above and beyond to maximize value. He looks for new ways to become more effective to the customer base, and more agile so he can improve the financial results, and those are big picture items. Whether it is marketing, operations, or sales, there are a lot of moving parts to keep an eye on during a merger or acquisition. To learn more about the process, listen to the latest episode of GWP’s Constructing Brands podcast with Don Wharton. About Don Wharton Don Wharton comes from a background in finance, beginning with his career at J.P. Morgan Chase. He then transitioned into the building materials industry after taking a position with Moen. Don has also served as the Vice President, Finance at Allsteel, President of Gunlocke, President of Vycom, and President of Scranton Products. During his tenure with Scranton Products, Don successfully oversaw the sale of the company. What You Will Learn: How to prep your company for sale in the building materials industry How to maximize the valuation of your company leading into a transaction or change in ownership The different functions of marketing, operations, and sales in a merger or acquisition Why you need to maintain your vision, missions, and values throughout the sale process How much of the brand is being sold vs. the books and equipment Don Wharton’s current role as Vice President, Operations for LeafFilter Resources LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/don-wharton-a9786410/
(Recorded For The 01/11/2020 Show) In review from the last segment all that Sugar Mountain offers, Bill shares a fun experience from the South Carolina State Fair…his family’s tradition of sliding down a GIGANTIC slide. Sounds wild! The Outdoor Guys also discuss New Year’s resolutions for the new year AND new decade, as well as tips and tricks on making and keeping them. While Don’s tradition is to map out his year ahead on a calendar, Bill discusses how experts recommend individuals go about accomplishing your goals: start small and be realistic, take small steps, talk about the goals, let others hold you accountable, and if you make a mistake, don’t beat yourself up. Sounds like a path to success!
Don Henley has been a major part of the Eagles, but the singer songwriter drummer has certainly also had a reputable solo career worth noticing. But how did Don get to be such an epic drummer and musician? In 1963, his mother reportedly purchased a drum set for him after he pulled a childhood stunt in which he blew up the family washing machine with a cherry bomb. Yes, that’s right, she rewarded him for blowing up a washing machine. 1982 must have been a popular year for the Eagles band members producing solo albums, as Henley’s solo debut just so happened to debut at the same time as Eagles bandmate Glenn Frey. Danny Kortchmar, who co-wrote songs like “Dirty Laundry” with Henley, said Don would drive around in his car and listen to the music, formulating lyrics for the song in his head. He’d come back to the studio with lots of ideas. His solo hits include "Dirty Laundry", "The Boys of Summer", "All She Wants to Do Is Dance", "The Heart of the Matter", "The Last Worthless Evening", "Sunset Grill", "Not Enough Love in the World", and "The End of the Innocence". While Don’s debut album was a smash success, the length of time before he could produce another set of records was quite long into the 90s. Record company Geffen had a dispute with Henley that prevented him from making any new solo releases for nearly 11 years. In addition to his squabbles with his record company, Mr. Henley has also been no stranger to run-ins with the law. He was arrested in 1980 in LA and charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor when paramedics were called to his home to save a naked 16 year old girl overdosing on cocaine and Quaaludes. He went to drug counseling, paid a fine, and ended up on two years probation. Don is still actively creating solo material, while also continuing to tour in 2020 with the remaining members of the Eagles.
This week we are bringing Don Reichelt back on the show to talk all about his experience running in this year's edition of Big's Backyard Ultra. Big's has quickly risen to the top of iconic ultra races in the United States. The format is simple- every hour runners must complete a 4.16 mile loop, the next hour they must complete it again....then again....then again....at any point a person can quit....and this will continue until there is only one person left standing. It's an event designed by Gary "Lazarus Lake" Cantrell, the genius behind the Barkley Marathons, to truly explore the limits of human endurance. What pushes a person to tap out? How can one to simply endure? This year was the world championship where 75 high level endurance athletes flew out to Laz's backyard in Tennessee to see who could outlast the others. While Don's race didn't go as planned, a bashed up foot and messed up anterior tib saw to that, he discovered so much about his drive, mindset, and willingness to dive deep into the pain cave. He also discovered a beautiful community full of other highly driven ultrarunners and absorbed lessons from everyone he had the opportunity to run with. In this episode we chat about Don's race prep which included a sports psychologist and hours spent running four miles around his neighborhood. We also dive into what Don observed from the other racers, including Maggie Guterl the ultimate winner after 250 miles over two and a half days. Hope you enjoy show!! I always enjoy chatting with Don and hearing his perspective on this crazy sport of ours! Coming at you with a mini episode this week to help fill the void of Don and Colin's standard conversations. While Don was still out of commission, Colin and his brother went out on a hunting trip and he decided to go ahead a record a little something about his weekend adventure. It's a little "off-brand" for a typical Salt of the Streets podcast so were just calling it what it is "Colin Went Hunting". It's a half hour of Colin recounting the trip and all he experienced on it, hope you enjoy!

On this episode of House Flip Masters Holly is joined by guest Don Gilmartin. Don is the VP and CEO of APRIS Restoration Company. Holly and Don talk about how to deal with fire, flood, and even death when you are buying a home as a real estate investment. Don talks to Holly about how to manage a home that has fire damage. Fire is such a devastating and severe trauma to a home that not only does it leave a lasting odor, but can destroy the framework and even the foundation of a home. When fire impacts the foundation, the rebar and the steel and the concrete, it needs to destroyed and built from the ground up. Holly asks Don about how to handle a home that has survived a fire but still smells of smoke. Don advises that smoke damage is something that you typically cannot get rid of and it will require for drywall to be replaced in the entire home. Smoke damage permeates the walls and sometimes the foundation and cannot just be masked. Don’s overall motto is that he doesn’t care what size the damage on the home the compassion level stays the same because even if the damage is small this damage is horrific for the individual person that is going through it. Don and his team treat every project the same because they are dealing with people handling a very difficult time in their life, with often times their biggest investment; their home. Don and his team, by law, have to test for asbestos or lead and cannot come in and restore a home until testing has been done; homes that were built before 1985 require testing and cannot be touched until this has been completed. If testing comes back with a certain level of asbestos or lead a specialist will have to come in and take care of the situation. Another issue that Don deals a lot with is mold. Don tells us that mold is just a natural element of water and it will leech onto any building material but it is not something to panic over. A seller needs to disclose to a buyer if there was mold found in the home and that it was remediated. Sometimes investors have tenants and once the lease is over they take a break from tenants and let the home sit vacant for a while, during this time things can happen, such as a slow leak. Holly asks Don if a slow leak is something that insurance will take care of or if there is another way to go about handling this. Don advises investors that when you are dealing with a slow leak and are asking insurance to cover it you need to make sure you are working with a company that can prepare and present your estimate in a manner that shows that the slow leak isn’t considered long-term damage. Don has rental properties and he personally checks on them 3 times a year, he stresses that investors need to stay on top of their properties and watch for any signs of water damage. He always makes sure to educate his tenants on what to watch for. In educating the tenant as an investor you have a second set of eyes for the times between your own check-ups on the property. Don advises when flipping in an older home make sure to watch for the joints of the pipes when you are replacing fixtures. Holly agrees that this is extremely important, when she and her team take possession of the home the first thing that they do is replace all of the angle stops. Replacing the angle joins costs a few dollars up front but potentially saves you thousands down the road if there is a leak or any other water problems. While Don deals with water, fire, and mold damage he also provides trauma scene restoration and services. Don prides himself in being able to help people smile again and give them their home back after they have dealt with a traumatic incident in their home. Don tells listeners a story about a time when he had a client with limited funds who was dealing with a family member’s suicide in the home. Don and his company were able to go into this trauma scene and help this
Listen in to our conversation about the survival game _Don’t Starve_. While _Don’t Starve_ certainly might come across as a leisure game with its cute style and cynical mini monologues, there is much more to it. The game tests your creativity and forces you to think outside the box about where to find resources. You have to think again about how one person can affect the world and the impact of your actions. The fellows start the podcast by catching up on their travels, and Don talks about Brazil and Ben about Canada. Don also talked about his new podcast workflow using an app that converts webpages to PDF files and sends it directly to Dropbox. Surprisingly, they immediately embark in a food safety conversation and Ben mentioned a recent C. perfringens outbreak in Maryland at a food safety conference where 266 people became ill presumably by eating Chicken Marsala. The actual food served was not sampled, however stool samples were positive for C. perfringens. This outbreak sparks a discussion of the work by food safety expert Frank Brian. In response to an outbreak at a school, Frank performed an observation study, where he had the cafeteria staff redo everything identifying the risk associated with that outbreak. The discussion turns to Denmark where three individuals died of Listeriosis after eating asparagus soup. Dr. Charles Haas tweeted the asparagus soup recipe has a dairy component and the soup may be served hot or cold which might be the risk associated with the outbreak. Once again, they talk about cutting boards in response to Don’s Facebook post. There has been previous discussion about how many cutting boards a kitchen should have. Don who himself owns 10 cutting boards, raises a better question to how risk is managed, or when to throw away a used cutting boards. Dr. Cliver, a former professor at UC Davis, has done published on plastic and wooden cutting boards. Ben recalled that Dr. Cliver compared raw milk and apple cider with bungee jumping and skydiving. While Don does not agree with this metaphor, he thinks that Dr. Cliver would have been a great podcast guest. Speaking of guests, the hosts updated their short list to include retired government scientists Jack Guzewich, and Carl Custer. The show-noter for this episode also gives a shout out to Dr. Freeze who was not just an awesome podcast guest, but also an inspiration and role model for female food safety scientists. Ben turns the talk to tech by mentioning an iTunes application that he uses to scan receipts and important notes, and Don counters with his PDF app of choice, which reminds him of his dislike of university reimbursement logistics. Don calms down to recommends music software that helps him focus. The show wraps, up with discussion of a blog post by Doug Powell: “Who are you? Scientist, Writer, Whatever”, and Don adds that to be a good scientist, one must be a good writer, since one must write to publish, and doing experiments without publishing them is not science. Then they talk about how social media can be useful in helping in food safety, citing a restaurant in Alaska that was closed after a Facebook post led to health department inspection.
The show started with Don and Ben sharing their love for iOS7 and iTunes Radio. Ben's still on his Beach Boys trip, having recently watched Beautiful Dreamer. The discussion then quickly turned to food safety follow up. Ben wasn't happy with his Food Safety News interview on dishwasher cooking and the message that he might have sent. Don felt that a really important aspect was the multitude of variables that can change from one dishwasher to another and hence that it was difficult be safe. The guys then discussed some listener feedback about safety of low sugar jellies, which was related to the work of one of Don's master's student. The listener commended the work on low sugar jellies, which will help provide important information to existing Cottage Food Guidelines. The guys then delved into the effects of water activity, pH, sugar contents for the safety of the preserving process and how some products, such as the Cronut Maple Jam, fall far outside the known safe zone. This got Ben onto the Toronto Public Health investigation update on the Cronut Burger outbreak, which was related to the already risky jam not being refrigerated by the producer or the vendor who purchased it. Don then gave Amy Jane Gruber, from Just The Tip podcast, a plug for her participation in the Fare Walk for Food Allergy. You might even hear her on a future FST episode. In the Food Safety History segment, Don shared the initial editorial from the journal of milk technology, which while written in 1937 still resonates strongly with today's food safety activities. Ben then described personal challenge he has urinating in his office building without getting splash back. This reminded the guys of the aerosolization in the bathroom and potential risk that this can pose. Ben then recalled the UPI story about a Swedish man urinating on supermarket produce. While urine is normally sterile, Ben wondered about the risks. While Don couldn't quantify the risk on the spot, he noted that in HACCP terms hand washing after a bowel movement was a CCP while after peeing it could be considered a GHP. But both agreed that sick workers just shouldn't be at work. The discussion then turned to raw milk cheeses, which was prompted by the Gort's Gouda raw milk cheese related outbreak in Canada. Don noted that the rate of inactivation in a particular product was more important that just a '60-day limit' say. That's because the final risk is integrally related to the starting concentration and the inactivation rate. To finish off the podcast Don wanted to talk about the Food Safety News article on food date labels, which was based on this NRDC work. While Don agreed that date labels were confusing, he was also rather sceptical of the underlying work. In the after dark, the guys talked about the new markdown format for the shownotes and planned their podcasting schedules for the next few episodes.
