In 2019, the “last man standing” at Big's Backyard Ultra was Maggie Guterl .She ran for 60 hours straight. She ran a total of 250 miles. Some so-called experts have asked how women seem able to compete head-to-head with men in ultra distances of 100 miles or more. I suspect most of these conversations are by men. And here I am, a man about to offer an opinion on this topic.I believe that women excel at ultramarathons because of feminine energy.I'm going to talk about a quality of feminine energy I've never heard anyone talk about. I call this the velvet-covered brick.

Joanna Ford is a 37 year old trail ultrarunner from Calgary, AB. On July 15th she finished 6th female at Hardrock 100 Endurance Run. She was second Canadian female behind Stephanie Case, and ran in a women's field that also included Courtenay Dauwalter, Darcy Piceu, Megan Hicks, and Maggie Guterl. We couldn't wait to talk to Joanna about her race, as well as learn more about her personal running story.  In this episode, we discuss how Joanna prepared for Hardrock, including the 9 years it took her to gain entrance in the lottery.  Hardrock is a bucket list race for many runners, and requires that one qualify and enter a lottery for the chance to toe the line each year. Hardrock is a 102.5-mile run with 33,197 feet of ascent and descent for a total elevation change of 66,394 feet with an average elevation of 11,186 feet. The run starts and ends in Silverton, Colorado and travels through the towns of Telluride, Ouray, and the ghost town of Sherman, crossing thirteen major passes in the 12,000' to 13,000' range. Entrants must travel above 12,000 feet (3,700 m) of elevation a total of 13 times, with the highest point on the course being the 14,048' summit of Handies Peak. We talk about all the things that make Hardrock the iconic race that it is - the elevation, the unpredictable weather, the punishing terrain, and the inevitable stomach issues that come with running so high.  We also talk about Joanna's crew, her pacers and her favourite experiences during the race.  Joanna has a love for mountain peaks, big climbs and fast downhill running.  She even managed to secure the Strava crown for the descent down Grant Pass during the race! There were few international competitors due to pandemic-related travel restrictions, and because of this, a smaller field of runners (usually 40 runners line up), almost entirely Americans, took on the beast. Additionally, runners were required to get COVID-19 tests ahead of arrival, among other safety protocols.   A strong contingent of Barkley veterans lined up at the start, including Big’s Backyard champion Maggie Guterl, two-time Barkley Fall Classic winner Liz Canty, the only three-time Barkley finisher Jared Campbell, and multi-time Barkley attempter Jamil Coury. There was also a lot of excitement around Barkley virgins (first-timers) Courtney Dauwalter, Western States and Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc champion; and Luke Nelson, Tor des Geants finisher. Guterl, Canty, and Dauwalter were attempting to become the first woman to finish the Barkley.   The race started midweek, in order to deter spectators. Founder Gary “Lazarus Lake” Cantrell blew the conch at 2:03 a.m. ET on Thursday, March 18, and runners set off on the first loop an hour later, when Cantrell lit his cigarette. Runners dealt with rainy and foggy conditions throughout the entire event.     ‘It’s impossible to say’: Chris Froome unsure of when he’ll be ready to fight for GC in races again Chris Froome has admitted that he doesn’t know when he will be able to compete for victory again.   The Briton is continuing his comeback from serious injuries at this week’s Volta a Catalunya, but despite headlining Israel Start-up Nation’s team, he was dropped on the opening stage and finished 90th on stage two’s time trial, 2-05 down on former Ineos Grenadiers team-mate Rohan Dennis.   The upbeat and confident Froome has made no secret in declaring his intention to win a record-equalling fifth Tour de France, but asked by Cycling Weekly if that was still a realistic goal he could fulfil this season, he said: “I can’t really put any time on it. I am just taking it one week at a time at the moment.   “It’s just about following the process and I am not putting a timeline on it. Naturally, I would love to be ready for the Tour de France but I have to keep following the process and do what I can.”       What's New in the 303:   How Triathlon was Introduced to the World The History and Background of Triathlons A “triathlon” is defined as a three-part sports discipline comprising swimming, cycling, and running. The three sports are contested as a continuous event without a rest. The triathlon can be an individual or team event over varying distances.   Triathlon history dates back to the early 1970s and originated with the San Diego Track Club. The triathlon was designed to be an alternative to hard track training. The first triathlon event was held on September 25, 1974. Don Shanahan and Jack Johnstone are pioneers in the history of the triathlon. The San Diego Track Club sponsored the event. The triathlon then comprised a 10 km run, 8 km cycle, and 500 m swim. In 1989, the sport was awarded Olympic status and featured for the first time at the 2000 Sydney Olympics in Australia. Since then, the sport has grown in popularity. In fact, no other sport achieved Olympic status in such a short time. Over the next decade, the triathlon grew by leaps and bounds and soon gained recognition worldwide.   PRIMAL & 303 Endurance Indoor Cycling Class, led by Bill Plock Date: Every Wednesday till it warms up Time: 12:00 Noon MST Price: FREE Place: ZOOM (Click Here) ZOOM Passcode: H49LJK Join The Ride     Video of the Week: We NEED to talk about this IRONMAN “Update”       Upcoming Interviews: Michael Murphy is a motivational speaker, paralyzed athlete, and writer. Episode 86 is an interview with the amazing athlete Maggie Guterl. Maggie made headlines when she won Big’s Backyard Ultra in 2019, a ‘last man standing’-style event run by Lazarus Lake (organiser of the infamous Barkley Marathons) which sees runners cover a 6.7km loop on repeat. Each lap must be completed within an hour and starts again on the hour and after that, it’s a battle to see which competitor outlasts the rest. Maggie completed 60 laps to cover a mind-boggling 402.5kms and win it outright – the first woman to do so. Maggie has also competed for Team USA at the IAU 24-Hour World Championships, she’s won the Brazos Bend 100-miler outright, come second at the Georgia Death Race and 8th at Western States, amongst other things. IN this interview we discuss her win at Bigs and what it will take to succeed at Barkley in 2021. I used to think that to get running injuries sorted, one needed to see a physio. How wrong was I! I have been seeing Luke Nelson, chiropractor at Health and High Performance in Mont Albert. Luek is a sports chiropractor who specialises in runners. He has been amazing at helping get on top of the niggles I have had since GSER back in 2019. Let Luke help you get on top of any niggles or injuries you may have now, so that you can enjoy running again and get back to preparing for the upcoming race season or just so that you run pain free! Come in and see Luke or any of the other  specialists at Health and High Performance where they utilise the latest in technology, and experience, to help you get back to your running best. So, head to www.healthhp.com.au/run to book an appointment. I assure you, you won’t regret it! We have a special episode for you this week with one of the members from the UK Backyard Team that took part in the Big Dog's Backyard Ultra - World Championship on the 17th Oct 2020. It was an epic event to be part of the UK came team home finished in 13th place out of 21 when Richie Hinson completed his 39th loop, Johnny Breen came in an amazing 2nd place which shows how much he developed as a competitive ultra runner over the last couple of years. Ed McGroarty and Eoin Keith ensured Ireland finished in 10th place with an pretty impressive 42/41 loops, but the big story in my eyes was this weeks guest Nick Lister who less than 6 years ago weighed in at 19 stone and realised it was time to turn a corner. After completing a couple of Ironmen Nick entered the Castleward backyard and failed his way to completing the magical 100 mile mark during the world championships where he and his team completed against the likes of Courtney Dauwalter, Amelia Boone, Maggie Guterl and lets not forget Karel Sabbe who managed to complete 75 loops which is an astonishing 321.5 miles. This is a great story of growth and perseverance, Nick has really recoloured his life through the world of Ultra Running, a real down to earth guy who just likes putting himself through hell. My favourite piece of this episode is where Nick has his break through during his 500 (524) mile run around the North of Scotland, enjoy....

This week's guest is the incomparable Maggie Guterl! No event has captured the imagination of ultrarunners quite like Big's Backyard Ultra "the race with no end." A Last Person Standing event created by "Lazarus Lake" Gary Cantrell, the mind behind the Barkley Marathons, that tests the will, grit, and pure madness of its participants. This past October, Maggie outlasted everyone. For 250 miles over 2 and a half days, her stoic nature, patience, consistency, and determination kept her going and going and GOING. Whether it's Big's, Barkley, or Western States, she is undaunted in the face of epic challenges which is why I was so excited to dig into her mindset and spirit! I brought on Phil Pinti, one of my favorite people in the world to help interview her. Phil and Maggie have raced together a few times and listening to them chat about Pretzel City Sports was fantastic! This Pennsylvanian based race company seems to epitomize what we all love about ultra running- the community, the laughter, and the pure joy found in mutual suffering. (Check out their races here: https://www.pretzelcitysports.com/calendar_events/ ) We also get into Maggie's current move to Durango, Colorado- how it's affected her training and racing, moose encounters, and some of her future plans! This week we are bringing Don Reichelt back on the show to talk all about his experience running in this year's edition of Big's Backyard Ultra. Big's has quickly risen to the top of iconic ultra races in the United States. The format is simple- every hour runners must complete a 4.16 mile loop, the next hour they must complete it again....then again....then again....at any point a person can quit....and this will continue until there is only one person left standing. It's an event designed by Gary "Lazarus Lake" Cantrell, the genius behind the Barkley Marathons, to truly explore the limits of human endurance. What pushes a person to tap out? How can one to simply endure? This year was the world championship where 75 high level endurance athletes flew out to Laz's backyard in Tennessee to see who could outlast the others. While Don's race didn't go as planned, a bashed up foot and messed up anterior tib saw to that, he discovered so much about his drive, mindset, and willingness to dive deep into the pain cave. He also discovered a beautiful community full of other highly driven ultrarunners and absorbed lessons from everyone he had the opportunity to run with. In this episode we chat about Don's race prep which included a sports psychologist and hours spent running four miles around his neighborhood. We also dive into what Don observed from the other racers, including Maggie Guterl the ultimate winner after 250 miles over two and a half days. Hope you enjoy show!! Just to close the loop on the Big Dog’s Backyard we have Will Hayward on the podcast this week, he gained entry through winning Boar’s backyard Ultra with a respectable 25 loops just scraping past the 100 mile mark. His main aim going into the backyard wasn’t to contest winning but to find out how far he could challenge his own limits, well he done just that and more he looked like he was at deaths door half way through the race and miraculously through a deep strength of resilience and determination he kept showing up at the starting line ready to battle against his own inner voices. It wasn’t long until 66+ became four, and Katie Wright dropped followed by the race favourite Dave Proctor, this left Will as the last man standing and the remaining challenger against Maggie Guterl who went on to claim over all victory. Kia Ora Whanau. Run 6.66666667 km within an hour. Then do it again. And again. Every hour. Do it 60 times until you are the last person standing at Big’s Backyard Ultramarathon in Tennessee. Maggie Guterl is that last person standing and the first woman to win at Lazarus Lake’s infamous event. As with our other Big’s conversations, we’ll keep it short here and let the quality of the conversation and what Maggie brings to the table speaks for itself, although some spoilers: We do ask Maggie about the aftermath of Big’s and the media attention, how having understanding colleagues is really important after running for 60 hours and that even though you like Tailwind, like, to the max like Tailwind, after awhile it all just tastes the same. But then wouldn’t everything? Enjoy.

Kia Ora whanau. Strap yourselves in for the biggest episode of Dirt Church Radio yet. We go all in with a double episode, two full conversations with Katie Wright and Will Hayward, two of the final four left standing at Big’s Backyard Ultra, recently held in Tennessee. This race is the brainchild of Lazarus Lake, the man behind the infernal Barkley Marathons, and is a Last Person Standing event, whereby the competitors take on a 6.7km loop every hour until one person is left standing. Everyone else records a DNF. Both Katie and Will qualified for Big’s by winning a golden ticket entry. Will in Hong Kong at Big Boar’s Backyard and Katie here at home in the Riverhead Backyard Relaps. Both arrived at Big’s Backyard wanting to find and test their limits and it appears both certainly did. Spoiler Alert: Katie and Will were two of the four final competitors, Katie being halted by injury on lap 50 and Will spectacularly timing out on loop 59, thus giving the only other person on course (Maggie Guterl) the victory. What these athletes have undertaken is phenomenal, however what is also phenomenal is the honesty, humility, grace, and insight with which they recount their adventures to us. We’ll let them do the talking. Enjoy.

The coaches spend the first part of the podcast discussing the disastrous rain at the Marine Corps Marathon today before touching on the wildfires in California (if you are affected, please let us know!) and remind their clients that personal safety is PARAMOUNT and it does not make you a weenie. Period. This leads to an old post of Coach MK's about DNFing and DNSing, two decisions that are terribly difficult to make and don't get enough credit. It's harder to tap out, even when it's the right choice, because we only celebrate participation when it is AGAINST ALL ODDS as well as common sense.  Finally, Coach MK talks about Tillie the Terrible Swede, the OG ultraracer, who paved the way for Maggie Guterl to be ignored this week. Maggie and Camille Herron (to name a few) are redefining human capacity in ways that are meaningful to MK and her daughters in ways the broken two-hour marathon barrier never could.     Runner, Interrupted #weeklywins - self care! I went to the local coffee shop for an hour before work Friday and bought fancy coffee and wrote in my journal. It felt so good to reward myself this way after a tough week. Making it a priority now a few times a month. #weeklywins Rocking my Halloween socks at work and my Coach MK costume Also VOLUNTEERING AT MCM! You rock, they needed it!   ReBuild I am now running a lot of hills (FUCKING hills). Very steep up and downs that turn shorter runs into hill repeats every time. About 15 years ago I had a coach give suggestions about hills but I only remember the going up advice. (Lock cage, increase cadence) I vaguely remember something about sitting back when going down hills? Can you give some tips on physical technique for hills? Thank you! In a nutshell, pretend you are riding a unicycle! So in a recent checkup, my OB/GYN said that dual-leg strength moves that put extra pressure on the abdomen can make pelvic floor issues worse. I don’t remember if his source was a study or a book. He said old school sit-ups, Russian twists, squats and planks were all problematic. That single-leg staggered stance moves were better. My basic response was, “What the hell? You’ve got to be kidding me?!?!” What say the coaches? -Ann from TX That is correct! Most strength programs tend to be all-over body workouts, and a move like a Russian Twist is fantastic and to do it correctly you need to use a lot of muscles. Our strength is functional first.   Maintain Race Shoutouts: Shara Alpern did the MC 10K, and Laura Zale and Denny Krahe did MCM! And Tamara did her WC-50 Ultra Trail Marathon! Can you talk a little bit about tips/tricks, what to look for when choosing a therapist?  Who’s available and affordable? Do they listen? If they listen, do they validate? What kind of therapy do they do? EMDR (Coach MK on reliving trauma and triggers) Finding someone who is respectful of boundaries  I'm eyeing a 50k at the end of February (I live in the desert Southwest). What do you think about me using the marathon ramp plan to train for that? Should I just increase the distance of a few of the long runs (and train on trails, of course) Possible! We will think about extensions that need to be made! Terrain MATTERS - you need some specific skills. Follow up and tell us what race this is! Antelope Canyon? Also, check this out...famous ultramarathon elevation compared to Boston Marathon elevation. LOL!! I have a tightness in my left glute/upper hamstring (I think this is the location, anyway) and so did a run in the pool instead of my regular Sunday workout. (My Sunday is the plan's Friday). My question is this: what is your opinion on doing a pool run instead of on land/treadmill on a fairly regular basis for the Friday run? Love it! As long as we don’t have a race coming up where we care about performance - if we are here for fitness then SHOOT YEAH. I am going to try my first EAT this week. I've never done it before and am wondering what's the best way to figure out average pace for each of the segments? Should I be hitting my lap button after every lap or after the 5 laps at each heart rate level? Do I need to run in lane 1 of the track for it to be accurate? (I'm not very familiar with how the track markings work). And one more question- can I seriously hit 180 bpm?! What if my heart rate doesn't go that high? Isn't it limited by age? (Total newbie to this stuff) Thanks! Links to our EAT content! Please miss, can we have a reminder of the desk series strength circuits. Because we want MORE ( that we can do at the office) and our butts and legs are feeling it on the trails. Thank you as always Karen Sutton ❤️

There's no set distance, and no set total time, just endless laps around a four-mile course, which participants must complete once an hour. Welcome to Episode 6 of the Eat for Endurance Podcast, featuring elite ultrarunner Maggie Guterl (aka “Maggatron”). Maggie and I connected through Tailwind Nutrition, where she works as the Athletes & Events Manager, including managing the Tailwind Trailblazer group that I joined this year. If you're one of my nutrition clients, that's where all those awesome Endurance Fuel and Rebuild samples have been coming from! As I've said many times, I only support products that I genuinely like, and Tailwind definitely makes that list (FYI - Tailwind is not sponsoring this podcast, and I am not receiving any compensation to talk about their products). Maggie recently moved to Durango, CO (where Tailwind is based) from Pennsylvania, where she grew up. After running her first marathon in 2009, she caught the endurance bug and ran her first ultra (a 24-hour race!) in 2011. She's competed in numerous 24 hour races, Big's Backyard Ultra (which she will be racing again on October 19th), and Barkley Marathons in 2018 (an insane race if you haven't heard of it), among countless other ultras. In 2016, she placed 2nd in the Georgia Death Race and got her golden ticket to Western States 100 (essentially the Boston of ultras), where she placed 8th female. This was one of my first podcast interviews, and I had so much fun talking to Maggie (as you can tell from all my laughter!) and hearing about how she got into the sport, shifted from bartending and partying life to being an ultra runner, and how she has been able to dial in her everyday and sports nutrition. Turns out you CAN run long distance and not puke your guts out! ;) UPDATE: Maggie won Big's! As in, she was the last PERSON (not woman) standing. (See www.SoTHISIsFitness.com/podcast35 for extended show notes/blog) We tend to low-ball ourselves. We generally have a tendency to believe we are less capable than we really are. We routinely underrate our true potential, and assume we can only go so high up on the achievement ladder. We see the accomplishments of others and rank ourselves against them... assuming that if THAT'S where THEY can get... we must be somewhere down just a little bit below them.  We need to believe we can rise above mediocrity. We are capable of so much more than we give ourselves credit for. IF we can just STOP stopping ourselves and reach a little higher... it'd turn everything upside down. THAT... is exactly what happened to Maggie Guterl. One day, she decided to "get serious", talked to a coach... and guess what her coach told her? That she could achieve something amazing. And she pushed Maggie to it. And she did it. We can all take a lesson from what Maggie has to tell us, whether we work with a coach or not.
