Grade horses are often a walking mystery. Where did they come from? What is their breeding? Have they been shown before? In what disciplines? How old are they? What is their story?? For those equestrians who have had the privilege to love and work with grade horses and ponies, the questions about their equine partners' history may elude them. In this episode, Regina interviews Terrie Kennedy with the Grade Horse Registry. Their website states that the Grade Horse Registry strives “...to provide a reliable and secure platform for horse owners to document their horse's history and create a traceable lineage.”  The Grade Horse Registry, or the GHP, gives an identity to horses that otherwise do not have documentation. The GHP's vision is that all horses are recognized and appreciated for their individuality, that grade horses are afforded the same respect and opportunities as pedigreed horses, and that the contributions of grade horses are widely acknowledged and celebrated.   HIP salutes the GHP and their efforts to give ALL horses an identity!  Listen in to learn more :  (04:01 - 05:05) Understanding the Great Horse Registry (10:28 - 12:00) Promoting Recognition in the Horse Industry (15:34 - 16:59) Equine Registry Integration Simplifies Tracking LINKS https://gradehorseregistry.org/

Have you ever wondered about the hidden truths of the pharmaceutical industry? Well, you're not alone. Today, I had a powerful conversation with Dr. Neda Ashtari, a dedicated resident at Yale New Haven Hospital, who is bravely challenging the Big Pharma. We plunged into the depths of the system and its practices, shedding light on how the drugs are developed, the role of marketing in promoting drug safety, and where all the money actually goes. Neda's personal connection to this fight against Big Pharma and her commitment to the University's Allied for Essential Medicines adds an extra layer of passion and authenticity to our discussion.Delving deeper, we examined the cost implications of the current pharmaceutical system. It's shocking to discover how taxpayer money funds drug development without necessarily ensuring affordability for consumers. The stark reality of how pharmaceutical companies exploit market dynamics to set skyrocketing prices was a topic that we couldn't ignore. As a consequence, we uncover the crisis of unaffordable drugs in the US and the global lack of access to essential medicines. Dr. Ashtari gave an insider's perspective on these pressing issues that will leave you questioning the system as you know it.In the final stretch of our conversation, we zeroed in on the surrogate endpoints, conflicts of interest, and marketing tactics used by the pharmaceutical industry. We also discussed the industry's impact on drug pricing and the public's role in drug development. The most shocking revelation was perhaps the fact that pharmaceutical companies spend more on marketing than on research and development. This episode is a deep dive into the pharmaceutical industry, its practices, and its implications. So, plug in your earphones and join us in this enlightening journey with Dr. Neda Ashtari. Have you ever acted on an impulse, hoping to make a difference, but ended up questioning whether your actions did more harm than good? In this deeply personal episode of the Global Health Pursuit, I unpack my experiences from a service trip to India with International Volunteer Headquarters (IVHQ). As a naive grad student, I was drawn to the allure of immersing myself in the culture of my ancestors and giving back. Yet, years later, I find myself reflecting on my actions, wondering if my short-term volunteering stint brought more disruption than aid to the local community.I'll share with you the harsh reality of my time teaching at a slum school in India, and the bonds I formed with children, only to leave abruptly, causing potential harm to their mental health. With hindsight, I've grown to understand how such volunteering can inadvertently harm local communities by displacing qualified local teachers. Dr. Zirkle shares his experiences as a surgeon in Vietnam, the challenges of designing and manufacturing implants for use in low-resource settings, and the impact that untreated fractures can have on poor families and communities around the world.Check out the shownotes!Episodes related to orthopedic/trauma care:9. Each year, about 2 million people die due to waterborne diseases. And most of these deaths happen to children under the age of 5.  What does it take to serve communities that are desperately in need of clean water? How do we find clean water? What factors do we need to take into consideration? How difficult could it be?In this episode, I speak with Lumbie Mlambo, founder of the nonprofit organization, JB Dondolo. The conversation centers around the importance of clean water equity and the work that Lumbie is doing to provide marginalized communities, particularly women and girls, with access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene. Lumbie discusses the dire situation in Zimbabwe, where millions of people lack access to safe drinking water, and the challenges of providing clean water to communities, particularly for women who are often at risk of sexual assault while fetching water. She also highlights the issue of water scarcity in the US and the impact of human actions on natural resources. Have you ever tried to approach your parents about the prospect of going to therapy? Sometimes, our readiness to break generational cycles can look like a threat to our parents. Today, we're going to dive into an incredibly important topic that is often overlooked in the South Asian community - intergenerational trauma. I'm joined by Anjali Badrinath, a master's student of clinical mental health counseling at the College of New Jersey. Anjali went from being a pharmacy major to pursuing clinical mental health counseling and she's a passionate advocate on a mission to normalize therapy in the South Asian community. Speaking with Anjali, we realized how much we had in common as first generation with South Asian parents. Many of you who are listening may be first generation Americans. This can lead to something called intergenerational conflict, which is compounded with an intercultural struggle. It can get pretty messy when you identify with your family's cultural background but also want to embrace being an American. Oftentimes, South Asians are dissuaded from seeking therapy using something called the collectivist framework. But on the bright side, we are slowly but surely breaking the stigma of mental health conditions within the South Asian community. The Cobb County School District in Georgia has proposed allocating $930,578 for 11 new school resource officers in its fiscal 2024 budget. Superintendent Chris Ragsdale cites recent school shootings as reasons for adding armed officers to the force, stating that they deter potential intruders and provide immediate response times. However, Democratic school board member Becky Sayler expressed concern that an increase in armed officers could result in more student arrests, particularly among students of color. Republican board member Randy Scamihorn assured Sayler that the officers are well-trained to de-escalate situations. The final approval of the budget is expected on May 18th. Marietta City Council's approval of a mixed-use development project that would replace a Kroger grocery store with apartments and retail space was vetoed by Mayor Steve "Thunder" Tumlin. The project would have seen the redevelopment of a 4.8-acre lot by developer William Casaday, who requested a rezoning. Tumlin's veto was backed by Councilman Grif Chalfant, who campaigned for lower housing density. A six-month moratorium on new apartment building applications was approved after the project's rejection. The property's future remains unclear, with concerns raised about the possibility of less desirable commercial ventures worsening traffic in the area. Kennesaw House, now home to the Marietta History Center, was once a hotel where James J. Andrews and his group of volunteer raiders from the Union Army stayed the night before embarking on the Great Locomotive Chase in 1862. The raiders commandeered The General locomotive and three box cars heading for Big Shanty, Kennesaw, cutting telegraph wires and attempting to do as much damage to the railroad as possible. They were eventually captured, and Andrews and seven others were convicted as spies and hanged. Disney turned it into a film in 1956, staring Fess Parker as Andrews and Jeffrey Hunter as Fuller.  The Southern Museum, located across the tracks in Kennesaw, now houses The General locomotive and tells the story of the Great Locomotive Chase. The Southern Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Mount Paran Christian School has announced that student Claire Finch has been named a finalist for the 2023 Georgia Governor's Honors Program (GHP) as a visual arts major. The GHP is a four-week-long college immersive program for Georgia's top students in academics and the arts, and it will be held at Georgia Southern University. As a finalist, Finch represents the top quartile of the top percentile of her student peer group in the state. MPCS also set new school benchmarks with its largest contingency of nominees ever and multiple semifinalists named in one year. The program is fully funded by Georgia's state legislature.  Cobb County School District Superintendent Chris Ragsdale surprised many by recommending a tax cut as part of the district's $1.5 billion budget for 2024. Ragsdale proposed reducing the millage rate from 18.9 to 18.7 mills and offering 7.5% raises to all full-time employees. The budget also includes about $83 million to fund the raises, which range from 7.5% to 12.1%. Ragsdale called the budget "very employee focused." The tax rollback would reduce the district's revenue from property taxes by about $7.6 million annually. Two public hearings are scheduled to allow the public to weigh in on the proposal. The Marietta City Council has voted to freeze new apartment applications for six months, directing city staff to conduct a study examining the city's zoning code as it relates to apartments. The item authorizes them to hire a consultant if needed. Skepticism about apartments has been a concern for some time, as they have been associated with transiency, crime, and a lack of upkeep which leads to blight. The moratorium was approved after the mayor vetoed the council's approval of the 322-unit apartment complex at the corner of Powers Ferry and Delk roads. #CobbCounty #Georgia #LocalNews      -            -            -            -            -            The Marietta Daily Journal Podcast is local news for Marietta, Kennesaw, Smyrna, and all of Cobb County.             Subscribe today, so you don't miss an episode! MDJOnline            Register Here for your essential digital news.            https://www.chattahoocheetech.edu/  https://cuofga.org/ https://www.esogrepair.com/ https://www.drakerealty.com/           Find additional episodes of the MDJ Podcast here.             This Podcast was produced and published for the Marietta Daily Journal and MDJ Online by BG Ad Group   For more information be sure to visit https://www.bgpodcastnetwork.com          See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week we had the pleasure of co-hosting a panel and live town hall style discussion with our good friends from Vinson & Elkins featuring the recent work of the Houston Energy Transition Initiative (or “HETI”). It was exciting to bring the community together and have a live, studio audience to discuss the opportunities and challenges for Houston to serve as the capital of the energy transition. We had the honor of hosting Bobby Tudor, my former partner, CEO of Artemis Energy Partners, and previous Chair of the Greater Houston Partnership (GHP), Jane Stricker, Executive Director of HETI and Sarah Morgan, Co-Head of M&A and Capital Markets at Vinson & Elkins. While it was a Houston-focused discussion, the conversation more broadly focused on the role of classic energy producers and industrial users in the changes to come, and most certainly the things every energy and industrial community can focus on in preparing for the energy future.    The catalyst to our discussion was a report that the Greater Houston Partnership released late last year, “Perspective on The Energy Transition Capital of The World: Houston's Opportunity to Win by Catalyzing Capital Formation” (the report is linked here). Bobby laid the groundwork for our discussion with background on the GHP and the formation of HETI, and from there we touched on Houston's ecosystem around the energy transition, the concentration of energy capital in the city and the financial community's critical involvement going forward, getting solid and interlocking contracts completed and how that will help get more money to work, and working with non-traditional financing structures to facilitate new technologies. We also discussed the role for Houston's traditional oil and gas companies, noting that the biggest investment dollars on energy transition have been coming from the incumbent energy industry, HETI's partnerships with local and state universities and the focus on developing talent and the workforce broadly, the thorny permitting process and how “primacy” will be critical for maintaining a competitive advantage and simply getting things done, and more. Bobby summed it up well by saying “we are the laboratory for the energy transition” given the unique combination of Houston's infrastructure, it's industrial base, it's local energy and related companies, it's engineering talent and overall workforce, its pro-business attitude, physical location, and nearby geology for CCUS.  At some level, this episode was all about what Houston looks like in 10 years. And forgive us for saying so, but what Houston does and how it adapts will be pivotal to how the nation as a whole and certainly the oil and gas industry adapts. We can't thank the team enough for a great discussion!   Thank you again to our friends at Vinson & Elkins for co-hosting and to the great crowd who turned out and asked some excellent questions. We hope you enjoy this Special Edition COBT!

On Wednesday's show: Some recent numbers suggest Greater Houston's GDP grew at a significantly lower rate than the rest of the nation. Some suggest this slow economic growth is due to the region's reliance on the oil and gas industry, which performed poorly in 2021. Does this information fly in the face of the notion that Houston's economy is better diversified than years past? A local economic researcher puts the data in context. Also this hour: We discuss the latest developments in politics in our weekly roundup. Then, we continue our series looking ahead to some of the stories expected to make news in different realms of Houston life – from politics, to the environment, to health care. Today, we continue with a look ahead at the education stories likely to make news with the help of News 88.7 reporter Dominic Anthony Walsh. And artist Eileen Maxson casts items from her parents' flooded home as art in her exhibit, The Word Is Not Lucky, which is on display at the Galveston Arts Center through Feb. 5.

A Thanksgiving tradition continues as we gather around a virtual gratitude table with the folks who make Green House homes work. This year, GHP's Susan Ryan and Rebecca Priest welcome a trio of employees from St. John's Senior Services in Rochester, N.Y. – dining practice partner Linda McCoy, dementia and quality of life specialist Mimi DeVinney, Shahbaz Annette Robles, and nurse Jen Dean. You'll hear how this team built the Penfield Green House Homes, and how they continue to sustain an empowering environment for the elders who call Penfield home. To everyone in long-term care working through the holidays to keep elders engaged, active, and safe, GHP and Pioneer extend our deepest thanks and admiration.  Explore the Penfield homes: https://www.stjohnsliving.org/communities/st-johns-home/green-house/ Learn more about The Green House Project: www.thegreenhouseproject.org
