The Future. Built Smarter.
WCAP Part III: The structural trail to net zero carbon by 2050

The Future. Built Smarter.

Play Episode Listen Later May 22, 2026 18:26

In the final installment of a three-part series on IMEG's 2026 Whole Carbon Action Plan (WCAP), senior sustainability and energy engineer Laura Hagan discusses how the company is tackling embodied carbon in structural systems. IMEG's carbon reduction journey began four years ago when the firm became a signatory to SE 2050, the structural engineering industry's initiative to eliminate embodied carbon in structures by the year 2050. That original structural-focused plan has evolved into IMEG's broader WCAP, which now also incorporates MEP and infrastructure disciplines. Laura, who also is a structural engineer, says SE 2050 “is a great program to be a part of because it really challenges us to be accountable for how we are designing and how we are trying to reduce embodied carbon.” Critical to this effort is first being able to measure the carbon impacts across IMEG's large national project portfolio. “We are in the process of trying to figure out what our designs mean in terms of carbon emissions,” Laura says. “Unfortunately, with the size of IMEG, it's not possible for us to do a whole building lifecycle assessment on every project the firm designs. So instead, we are using material schedules we created in Revit to calculate the quantities of materials in a structural model. Then we are going to transfer the quantities to an internal IMEG database that will multiply them by global warming potential (GWP) factors. This will give us a preliminary high-level assessment of the amount of embodied carbon a structural project is going to emit.” IMEG also will analyze the data for benchmarking purposes, she adds. “When we are able to make this connection with the internal database, the designers and structural engineers will be able to see, in real time, the projected embodied carbon emissions of the quantities of materials that they are designing with,” Laura says. Engineers can then test different framing layouts, slab thicknesses, or material quantities and immediately see the impact on emissions. “Anyone who's familiar with embodied carbon knows that if you can reduce the quantity of the material that you have, you're going to reduce the amount of embodied carbon that you have.” Laura says even small specification changes can produce meaningful results at scale. She references a case study involving slab-on-grade concrete design in which reducing slab thickness or lowering concrete strength produced a 10 percent to possibly 20 percent reduction in embodied carbon for that building element. “It's a great example of low-hanging fruit,” she says. “If you can reduce your quantity and it still performs perfectly for its structural capacities and serviceability requirements, you are going to save carbon and hopefully you'll save some money too.” Looking ahead, Hagan says innovation in low-carbon materials is crucial for achieving the long-term SE 2050 goal of net zero structural systems. “Innovation has to happen on the material side, then people have to start designing with it, and it has to make it into building codes as an allowable system. That all takes time, and then you have to build the demand for using the material on projects.” Laura's motivation comes from the engineering mindset itself. “We are problem solvers,” she says. “This is basically a giant problem that we don't have all the solutions to, but it's something that if we work together and continue to provide pressure to the industry we can reduce embodied carbon. “People are recognizing that this is important and trying to address it. That's what keeps me excited and what makes me happy to be doing this work and continuing to push for more every day.” To learn more, listen to part one and part two of this series or read IMEG's 2026 Whole Carbon Action Plan.

While Andy is away, Michael and Michael get things started with a discussion on the changing nature of sensitive and private information.  What was once published in a phonebook is now a central identify hub.  While Jenny most certainly had to change her phone number from 867-5309 and have the new one unlisted, she likely posts what would have been very personal photos on Insta, Mastodon or any number of social media services.  Michael R points out that while a phone book was available for a municipality, it was not available at a country level, preserving a degree of anonymity. Continuing on the theme of social implications of technology, Michael and Michael consider the Atlantic's article about the demise of Princeton's honor code process.  Check out the link below for some fantastic quotes from the Daily Princetonian – sadly the newspaper online archives only go back to 2001. Next up is an article from Thinking Machines' full duplex capabilities for natural voice interaction with agents.   LEGO is in focus for this episode (surprise!) with two intriguing sets.  First, a super cool LEGO Ideas Tetris arcade game cabinet with a hidden room.  This reminded Michael M of the set he built that also has a cool hidden room inside.  Then, Michael R shares a bit on the new Minas Tirith set – which has many elements from the movies, and includes the opportunity for a GWP (gift with purchase) of the battering ram Grond if you're one of the first to plunk down your gold pieces for this build. The fact that this is up on the Internets on 18 May is due to the hard work from Andy.  He migrated our hosting over the weekend, and this is the first post on the new service.  Hurrah, Andy!   Do you still have a copy of your city's phonebook?  Have your bots (or agents!)

Although we often focus on carbon dioxide, a group of powerful pollutants is also driving a large share of today's warming… In this episode, James and Daisy talk about super pollutants. Why are they important? Why are they worse for the climate? How can we reduce their use? SOME RECOMMENDATIONS: The Global Methane Pledge (GMP) – Launched at COP26 by the EU and the US, the GMP now has 160 participants who agree to take voluntary actions to reduce global methane emissions by at least 30% from 2020 levels by 2030, potentially eliminating over 0.2ºC warming by 2050. Methane has caused 30% of warming since the Industrial Revolution. The Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) – A voluntary partnership of over 200 governments, intergovernmental organizations, businesses, scientific institutions and civil society organizations committed to protecting the climate and improving air quality by reducing short-lived super pollutants (methane, black carbon, tropospheric ozone and hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs)). The CCAC drives efforts to implement known practices and existing technologies that can achieve global reductions of at least 40% of methane by 2030 (vs 2010); 70% of black carbon by 2030 (vs 2010); and 99.5% of HFCs by 2050 (vs 2010).OTHER ADVOCATES AND RESOURCES:UNEP (2024) – Interactive cartoons explaining the science of super pollutants.  UNEP – Parties to the Montreal Protocol (2016 Kigali Amendment) agreed to phase down HFCs by 80-85% by the late 2040s.CCAC (2024) – Super pollutants are a “flow” problem (controlling how fast the planet warms) whereas carbon dioxide is a “stock” problem (controlling the maximum extent of warming).CCAC – Methane has an atmospheric lifetime of 12 years (much shorter than CO2) but per unit of mass, has a warming effect 86x stronger than CO2 over 20 years and 28x over 100 years.UNEP – The International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) launched the Methane Alert and Response System (MARS) at COP27– the first public global satellite detection system providing actionable methane emissions data.PR Newswire (2026) – A group of companies including Amazon, Autodesk, Figma, Google, JPMorganChase, Salesforce, and Workday announced a $100 million Superpollutant Action Initiative.Carbon Brief (2025) – Super pollutants are responsible for around 45% of global warming to date, as well as millions of premature deaths each year. Human-caused methane emissions come from: (1) Agriculture (~40%), such as from livestock and rice production; (2) Fossil fuels (~35%), as a by-product of fossil fuel extraction, storage and distribution; and (3) Waste (~20%), from food and other organic materials decaying in landfills and wastewater.UK Government (2025) – The UK's Methane Action Plan notes that UK methane emissions have reduced by 62% between 1990 and 2023. IPCC (2023) – “Global Warming Potential (GWP) is an index measuring the radiative forcing following an emission of a unit mass of a given substance, accumulated over a chosen time horizon, relative to that of the reference substance, CO2.”  National Grid (2025) – Sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) has a GWP of 24,300 and an atmospheric lifetime of 3,200 years. 80% of the SF6 used globally is in electricity transmission and distribution.European Commission – The EU Methane Regulation (EU/2024/1787) entered into force on 4 August 2024. It aims to reduce methane emissions into the atmosphere, both in the EU and in global supply chains, and to minimise leaks of methane by fossil energy companies operating in the EU.EMSA – From 1 January 2026, the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) has incorporated methane and nitrous oxide for maritime transport.Thank you for listening! Today's podcast is all about catching up with a business that was last on the show five years ago. And we've got an awful lot of catching up to do. Back then Carbon Underwriting was on the show because it was one of the first crop of Syndicates in a Box at Lloyd's, laying out interesting ideas on how to modernise and optimise the underwriting of delegated authority business. Now it has matured into a carrier with GWP in the hundreds of millions that has built its own proprietary core systems and developed a broad and diverse capital ecosystem to support its underwriting. The last five years have also been transformative for the delegated underwriting sector, with explosive growth combining with strong results. That's why this interview with Carbon CEO Jacqui Ferrier is so interesting. As the market turns and a potential reckoning may lie in wait for the unwary or unprepared, Jacqui is a rare domain expert with her feet firmly on the ground and her eyes fixed on detailed underwriting data. The secrets of outperformance in delegated underwriting are all discussed here in the open for anyone who cares to listen. Fast ingestion of data, swift analysis and feedback, as well as absolute transparency with all stakeholders are key features Jacqui can afford to be so open and candid about what constitutes Carbon's edge, in part I think because what she and her team have managed to build is the sort of thing that is easy to talk about in theory but extremely hard to execute in practice. Jacqui is great company and there is a huge amount of underwriting experience and expertise packed into the next 45 minutes. What's more, the possible future strategic directions for Carbon as it continues to scale are a revelation. For Jaron Anderson of Helper Beer, listening to the beer itself, rather than following prescribed rules, is the only way to improve it. He's well-versed in the theory, but not a slavish adherent to dogma—what matters is the beer itself, and how it tastes, so any technique or ingredient that gets you there is worth considering. In 2025, he won GABF gold in the competitive German-style pils category, yet his pils was produced in a way that some would fine unconventional—single infusion mash, lack of mid- and late-kettle hops, two hour boil, heavy cool-pool hop charge—but for Anderson, it's not good enough to make a good beer using safe techniques. The goal is to make great beer, using every tool at his disposal. In this episode, Anderson discusses: stripping adjuncts out of light lager to reduce perception of acetaldehyde long 2+ hour boils to drive off DMS making characterful helles and pils without decoction using local water with high hardness to give structure to malt building character in lager with domestic and European malt hop use and selection in German-style pils the quirks of brewing with the Andechs strain And more. Sizing Breakers and Conductors (for HVAC) – Have Things Changed?

HVAC School - For Techs, By Techs

In this essential episode, Bryan Orr sits down with Elliot, the residential install supervisor at Kalos Services, to unpack a critical issue that's causing confusion among HVAC technicians, electricians, and inspectors alike: the new standards for breaker and conductor sizing on inverter-driven equipment. The conversation was sparked by Elliot's frustrating experience of having two inspectors in the same county fail the same installation for opposite reasons—one for an oversized breaker and another for an undersized breaker. This contradiction led to a deep dive into recent changes in UL standards and how they affect everyday HVAC installations. The heart of the issue stems from the transition to low-GWP refrigerants and the updated UL 60335-2-40 Edition 3 standard, which replaced the 1995 certification approach. This new standard introduced more conservative calculations for electrical characteristics, particularly affecting equipment using A2L refrigerants. The result? Data tags now show higher Minimum Circuit Ampacity (MCA) ratings than before, even though the equipment itself hasn't changed—only the math used to calculate these values has shifted. This has created a puzzling situation where the MCA can be higher than the recommended breaker size, which seems counterintuitive to anyone familiar with traditional electrical principles. Bryan and Elliot clarify the fundamental rule that still applies: size your wire to the MCA and your breaker to the MOCP (Maximum Overcurrent Protector). The confusion arises because manufacturers like Mitsubishi are now including "recommended breaker" sizes on data tags that are lower than the MCA—a courtesy to contractors, not a code requirement. The higher MCA reflects conservative safety margins that account for extreme operating conditions, but in practice, inverter-driven systems have multiple built-in protections that prevent them from ever actually reaching these calculated amperage levels. The key takeaway is that contractors can safely install breakers at the recommended size without safety concerns, as long as the breaker's lugs are rated to accept the wire size required by the MCA. The episode also explores how inverter-driven equipment fundamentally differs from traditional PSC motors, particularly regarding locked rotor amps (now more accurately termed "inverter input") and voltage drop considerations. Unlike conventional motors that simply run slower with reduced voltage, inverter-driven compressors and ECM motors compensate by drawing more current to maintain performance, creating a potential compounding effect with voltage drop that installers need to understand—even though voltage drop itself isn't an enforceable NEC code requirement. Topics Covered: New UL 60335-2-40 Edition 3 standards and their impact on electrical calculations for HVAC equipment The relationship between MCA (Minimum Circuit Ampacity) and MOCP (Maximum Overcurrent Protector) and why they can now seem contradictory Recommended breaker sizes on modern data tags and why they may be lower than the MCA Handling inspector conflicts and failed inspections related to breaker sizing Differences between inverter-driven equipment and traditional PSC motors in electrical behavior The transition from "locked rotor amps" to "inverter input" terminology for modern equipment Voltage drop considerations with inverter-driven systems (NEC 210.19A and 215.2A) Why inverter-driven equipment draws more current at lower voltages compared to traditional motors Proper wire and breaker sizing for A2L refrigerant equipment (454B systems) NEC Section 440 requirements specific to air conditioning and refrigeration equipment Breaker lug ratings and ensuring they can accept the required wire size Practical advice for communicating with inspectors and resolving code disputes   Read the tech tip on this topic HERE. In this raw and unfiltered episode, Bryan sits down with Elliot, a senior service tech and newly minted install supervisor, to discuss the realities of working with R-454B refrigerant in the field. What starts as a technical discussion about the new A2L refrigerant quickly evolves into a candid conversation about industry frustrations, manufacturer accountability, and the practical challenges technicians face with the latest refrigerant transition. With four years of hands-on experience, Elliot brings fresh perspectives on everything from charging procedures to equipment reliability issues. The conversation takes an honest look at the R-454B rollout, which Bryan describes as a massive industry failure. Unlike typical manufacturer talking points, this episode dives into real problems technicians are experiencing: extended charging times, subcooling drift, and equipment component failures. Bryan and Elliot discuss how R-454B systems can take up to an hour to stabilize compared to the 15-20 minutes they were accustomed to with R-410A. This isn't just an inconvenience—it's affecting how technicians approach charging procedures and follow-up visits. The episode also explores theoretical explanations for R-454B's unusual behavior. Bryan presents two hypotheses about why the refrigerant takes so long to reach equilibrium: either density differences between R-32 and R-1234yf are causing stratification in the condenser, or one component is settling at the top and acting like a non-condensable. While admitting he's "not a mathy details guy," Bryan encourages field technicians to investigate these phenomena using thermal imaging cameras and careful observation. This practical, boots-on-the-ground approach to understanding new technology exemplifies the podcast's commitment to real-world problem-solving. Beyond technical discussions, the conversation touches on broader industry issues, including the politics behind refrigerant selection, manufacturer warranty support (or lack thereof), and the challenges faced by contractors trying to maintain fair pricing while dealing with new equipment failures. Bryan and Elliot also address the reliability concerns with new A2L safety components like dissipation boards and refrigerant sensors, noting that while failure rates aren't dramatically higher than other components, they represent additional potential failure points that weren't previously necessary. Topics Covered R-454B Charging Behavior: Extended stabilization times (up to 1 hour vs. 15-20 minutes for R-410A) and subcooling drift over time Field Charging Strategy: Why technicians are intentionally undercharging slightly and relying more on line length specifications A2L Safety Components: Dissipation boards and refrigerant leak sensors—their function, failure rates, and nuisance alarms Refrigerant Stratification Theory: Potential explanations for delayed equilibrium involving density differences and non-condensable behavior Industry Politics: The R-454B vs. R-32 debate, GWP legislation, and lobbying efforts that shaped current refrigerant standards Manufacturer Accountability: Warranty support issues, untested components, and the financial burden on contractors Recovery and Reuse Concerns: Questions about blend consistency when recovering R-454B and tank contamination issues Future of HVAC: Discussion of heat recovery chillers, secondary fluid systems, and emerging refrigerant-free technologies Pressure Testing Requirements: New legislation requiring extended pressure tests and improved brazing practices Practical Field Advice: Using thermal imaging to diagnose condenser behavior and verify proper refrigerant distribution   Have a question that you want us to answer on the podcast? On this episode of the Scouting For Growth podcast, Sabine VdL talks to Amit Santhirasenan, co-founder and CEO of hyperexponential, an actuary and software engineer who has built the AI native pricing and underwriting platform used by leading specialty carriers. In this episode we cover how to turn messy submissions into structured signals your pricing model can trust – without hiring an army, multi agent architectures, the agentic AI mesh, and the human in the loop controls executives need for auditability and speed, and where agentic underwriting is ready today (and where it isn't), plus the metrics executives should track—cycle time, hit ratio, and loss ratio uplift. KEY TAKEAWAYS Email submissions were a luxury at the start of my career! What's been so exciting for me, as a self-professed nerd, is the pace at which the capabilities of core models have got so good that even 6 months ago was a whole product's capability and feature set is now within the gift of Gemini or GPT5. If you're an underwriter filling out a spreadsheet/renew model, in 2025 you need to be working with hx underwriting , actuary or agent inside a renew model to have your paired partner helping you get to the best result. Why can't you have deep risk research on every single risk? Why can't you say: Tell me the most important characteristics in the world that you can tell me about the top 3 exposures? No human can do this work, the cost/benefit trade off there isn't economic, but you can run an OpenAI deep risk API call to do that on every single risk you underwrite today. We do it for you, it's what we do. All of a sudden it's dramatically easier to bring that level of differentiation and specialism in the way that great underwriting has always been done to every single risk you want to touch. BEST MOMENTS ‘You won't see that many places with a $7 trillion contribution to GDP, with such a small number of companies and people responsible for this.' ‘We demonstrated the first API machine vision algorithm in the market in 2017, now kids coming out of university are doing that as toy projects before they get to our clients.' ‘You can have an army of digital agents helping you now, all for $20 per month!' ‘Generative AI models have unlocked the ability to pull data so quickly out of the information required for underwrite that you can put a very quick red/amber/green status on risks, several orders of magnitude greater than ever before.' ABOUT THE GUESTS Amit Santhirasenan is the Co-founder and CEO of Hyperexponential (hx), the AI native pricing and underwriting platform for P&C insurers. Under his leadership, hx Renew has become known for delivering executive level outcomes: ~50% faster submission to bind, 10× faster model build and deployment, and a platform that supports $45bn+ in GWP for 20+ enterprise customers worldwide. A qualified actuary and computer scientist, Amrit previously spent over a decade in the London Market. He served as Head of Pricing & Analytics at Tokio Marine Kiln, building the managing agent's first technical pricing team to support ~£1.5bn GWP, and earlier held actuarial roles at Catlin (including standing up the Canadian actuarial function). In this essential episode, Bryan sits down with Jeff and Tom from Copeland to dive deep into the world of scroll compressors and the critical topic of refrigerant compatibility. As the HVAC industry navigates new refrigerant standards and regulations, understanding how compressors are specifically designed and optimized for different refrigerants has never been more important. The conversation begins with a comprehensive overview of refrigerant classifications, focusing on the A1, A2L, and A3 categories that technicians are encountering in the field. Jeff and Tom dispel common misconceptions, particularly around A2L refrigerants and their relationship to propane (R-290), clarifying that A2L refrigerants like R-454B and R-32 do not contain propane despite widespread confusion in the industry. They explain how regulatory pressures around Global Warming Potential (GWP) limits are driving the transition to these new refrigerants, with targets under 700 GWP for air conditioning applications. The technical discussion covers the fundamental operating principles of scroll compressors and why they've become the dominant technology in HVAC applications. With over 200 million scroll compressors sold by Copeland, the technology has proven its reliability and efficiency. However, the guests emphasize a crucial point that many in the industry overlook: each compressor is specifically optimized for particular refrigerants. This isn't just about basic compatibility – it's about precision engineering to meet efficiency requirements and ensure long-term reliability. The scroll geometry, oil viscosity, and internal components are all carefully matched to each refrigerant's unique properties. Safety takes center stage throughout the discussion, with both guests stressing that while A2L refrigerants are "mildly flammable," they require heightened safety practices that were previously considered best practices but are now mandatory. This includes nitrogen purging during brazing, proper evacuation procedures, comprehensive leak testing, and thorough documentation. The conversation also touches on the practical challenges contractors have faced, including refrigerant availability issues, while maintaining the importance of following proper procedures regardless of supply chain difficulties. Topics Covered: Refrigerant Classifications: A1 (non-flammable), A2L (slightly flammable), and A3 (flammable) categories and their safety implications Compressor Optimization: How scroll compressors are specifically engineered for each refrigerant, including R-454B and R-32 applications New Compressor Naming Conventions: Introduction of "Y" series compressors for A2L and A3 refrigerants, replacing the traditional "Z" series Oil Viscosity Requirements: Different POE oil specifications (32 vs 46 viscosity) for various refrigerants and temperature conditions Safety Protocols: Enhanced safety requirements for A2L refrigerants, including mandatory nitrogen purging and leak testing procedures Glide Characteristics: Understanding temperature glide in R-454B (2.4 degrees) versus single-component R-32 Refrigeration Applications: Multi-refrigerant capability in commercial refrigeration compressors and natural refrigerant trends Service Compressor Strategy: LX series compressors designed to cover multiple R-410A applications for aftermarket needs Regulatory Timeline: Upcoming January 1, 2026 GWP limits for supermarket refrigeration systems Tools and Resources: Copeland Mobile app for compressor selection, cross-referencing, and technical specifications Training Importance: Critical need for enhanced technician education and OEM-specific training programs   Visit the EPA's website to stay up to date on the latest HFC phasedown rulings and information at https://www.epa.gov/climate-hfcs-reduction.  Keep up with Copeland at https://www.copeland.com/ and on their Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram. This week on Sustainability Now!, your host, Justin Mog, balances his checkbook with Tom Lambert, an applied economist at the University of Louisville's College of Business, and the host of Economic Impact here on Forward Radio (https://www.forwardradio.org/economicimpact). In 2022, after years of robust modeling and analysis, a multi-institutional team led by researchers from Resources for the Future (RFF) and UC Berkeley released an updated social cost of carbon estimate that reflects new methodologies and key scientific advancements. The study, published in the journal Nature, finds that each additional ton of carbon dioxide emitted into the atmosphere costs society $185 per ton—3.6 times the current US federal estimate of $51 per ton. Learn more at https://www.rff.org/news/press-releases/social-cost-of-carbon-more-than-triple-the-current-federal-estimate-new-study-finds/ In his research, Tom uses a tool called IMPLAN, which now helps us calculate damages from greenhouse gases. In preparation for this week's conversation, Tom used IMPLAN to produce a breakdown for different industries in the Louisville MSA (Jefferson County and surrounding counties). As new climate disclosure mandates roll out across the U.S. and internationally, IMPLAN now equips businesses and institutions with the tools to meet them head-on. Their newest feature brings greenhouse gas emissions data to the IMPLAN experience, capturing carbon outputs by industry and region, and mapping them directly to your economic impact results. Whether you're supporting Environment, Social & Governance (ESG) disclosures, informing climate strategy, or benchmarking emissions in your region, IMPLAN helps you do it with confidence. Learn more about environmental impact reporting, on IMPLAN's blog at https://blog.implan.com/emissions. In IMPLAN, GWP20 and GWP100 refer to the Global Warming Potential of greenhouse gases over specific timeframes. See https://www.epa.gov/ghgemissions/understanding-global-warming-potentials. GWP measures how much a particular greenhouse gas contributes to global warming, compared to carbon dioxide (CO2), which has a GWP of 1. IMPLAN utilizes greenhouse gas data, including GWP values, to analyze the environmental impacts associated with economic activities. GWP20 indicates the global warming potential over a 20-year timeframe. This timeframe prioritizes gases with shorter atmospheric lifetimes, like methane (CH4). GWP20 highlights the near-term warming effects of these gases. For example, methane has a much higher GWP20 (84-87) than its GWP100 (27-30) because of its shorter lifetime. GWP100 indicates the global warming potential over a 100-year timeframe. This timeframe is commonly used for benchmarking and comparing the environmental impact of various greenhouse gases. It offers a more balanced perspective of both short-lived and long-lived greenhouse gases. In essence, GWP20 and GWP100 in IMPLAN are important metrics for evaluating the environmental impacts of economic activity by providing insight into the global warming potential of greenhouse gas emissions over different timeframes. As always, our feature is followed by your community action calendar for the week, so get your calendars out and get ready to take action for sustainability NOW! SIGN UP TO OUR FREE STORYTELLING WORKSHOP THIS WEEKEND! Sunday 30th of March, 2025, at 6pm for a taste of our upcoming courses: https://candlelittales.ie/free-webinar-signup Welcome back to the Candlelit Tales Podcast. This episode is a conversation Aron Hegarty had in January 2025, with the Founder of the Gaelic Woodland Project, Eoghan Connoughtan, who we've had on the podcast before and another fascinating character, who uses ritual, storytelling and mythology in a unique way: Shivam O'Brien, the founder of Spirit Horse in Wales. Spirit Horse hosts retreats and ritual gatherings in 200 acres of land that has been allowed to rewild in Wales after being purchased in the mid 90's. Spirit Horse is now a ceremonial village of yurts and Celtic roundhouses set amongst waterfalls and mountains. Under Shivam's direction, ancient values, ritual, meditation, storytelling, tribal living, the performing arts, touching the earth and creative rebellion came to provide the backbone for this ongoing experiment in the rewilding of people, land and culture. The Gaelic Woodland is a social experiment, whose main objective was to create native woodlands and protect the existing woodlands on the Island of Ireland. This conversation was recorded in January 2025 in Galway at Shivam's home. As he wanted to talk to Eoghan and Aron about the shared mindset between Candlelit Tales, Spirit Horse and the Gaelic Woodland Project.. The GWP are now preparing to plant their 11 acres in Mayo with native trees. All donations to the charity go towards ecological respiration in Ireland. The GWP is still raising funds to buy more land, and to plant more trees. Eoghan and Aron are on the board of the GWP, which is hugely collaborative, inclusive and focused on skill sharing.
