This week's guest is the incomparable Maggie Guterl! No event has captured the imagination of ultrarunners quite like Big's Backyard Ultra "the race with no end." A Last Person Standing event created by "Lazarus Lake" Gary Cantrell, the mind behind the Barkley Marathons, that tests the will, grit, and pure madness of its participants. This past October, Maggie outlasted everyone. For 250 miles over 2 and a half days, her stoic nature, patience, consistency, and determination kept her going and going and GOING. Whether it's Big's, Barkley, or Western States, she is undaunted in the face of epic challenges which is why I was so excited to dig into her mindset and spirit! I brought on Phil Pinti, one of my favorite people in the world to help interview her. Phil and Maggie have raced together a few times and listening to them chat about Pretzel City Sports was fantastic! This Pennsylvanian based race company seems to epitomize what we all love about ultra running- the community, the laughter, and the pure joy found in mutual suffering. (Check out their races here: https://www.pretzelcitysports.com/calendar_events/ ) We also get into Maggie's current move to Durango, Colorado- how it's affected her training and racing, moose encounters, and some of her future plans! Big thanks to Maggie for sharing her time with all of us and to Phil for being an awesome co-host!! Hope you guys enjoy! This week we are bringing Don Reichelt back on the show to talk all about his experience running in this year's edition of Big's Backyard Ultra. Big's has quickly risen to the top of iconic ultra races in the United States. The format is simple- every hour runners must complete a 4.16 mile loop, the next hour they must complete it again....then again....then again....at any point a person can quit....and this will continue until there is only one person left standing. It's an event designed by Gary "Lazarus Lake" Cantrell, the genius behind the Barkley Marathons, to truly explore the limits of human endurance. What pushes a person to tap out? How can one to simply endure? This year was the world championship where 75 high level endurance athletes flew out to Laz's backyard in Tennessee to see who could outlast the others. While Don's race didn't go as planned, a bashed up foot and messed up anterior tib saw to that, he discovered so much about his drive, mindset, and willingness to dive deep into the pain cave. He also discovered a beautiful community full of other highly driven ultrarunners and absorbed lessons from everyone he had the opportunity to run with. In this episode we chat about Don's race prep which included a sports psychologist and hours spent running four miles around his neighborhood. We also dive into what Don observed from the other racers, including Maggie Guterl the ultimate winner after 250 miles over two and a half days. Hope you enjoy show!! I always enjoy chatting with Don and hearing his perspective on this crazy sport of ours! “If at first you don’t succeed, dust yourself off and try again...” is the motto of the week here at CULTRA HQ as we welcome back Regan Fitzgibbons to the podcast, and this one sure doesn’t disappoint. Yeah that’s right, I quoted Aaliyah right there, but I digress. The crew this week discusses the TARC Ghost Train 100 up in New Hampshire, then Art does something insanely stupid and awesome at the same time (which can be said for basically any accomplishment in ultrarunning, especially ones we forgot to mention AHEM Maggie Guterl at Big’s Backyard Ultra HASHTAG WTF CULTRA?) Sorry about that- we got so caught up in our friend’s lives that we forget to mention the elites so sue me. Synopsis: Art ran the Mohawk Mountain Marathon on Saturday then turned around and ran the Bimbler’s Bluff 50k on Sunday. That’s about 60 miles and 10,000 feet of vert over the course of about 33 hours. Hell of a weekend for Mr. Cultra himself. He relives in all of its sickening glory, it’s a VERY SPECIAL CULTRA. Jimmy was at Bimbler’s too and guess what part of his body got rolled again (hint: rhymes with “cankle”). He did not live up to the audacious claim made a few months ago: to land on the Master’s Podium (he was 6th Master, ugh). Clearly he is no one’s master, not even his own right ankle. Then Becky recounts the tale of crewing and pacing and encouraging Reagan and her redemption story from her DNF at VT100 in July. She got back on the horse and this time she tamed the beast named Tesla Hertz 100- hear what she did differently, her mental approach, and what it feels like to listen to creepy piano music at 3 am (damn, Becky that is some shiiiiit). Marcy and her husband John travel the US, living in a camper trailer, and knocking out FKT's everywhere they go. "We've been doing this for 10 years. It's a great way to see the country!" She's also a Hardrock finisher, and done a lap or two of Barkley. But her favorite race? "Big's Backyard Ultra. I'm not real fast, so the 'Last Person Standing' style suits me." This week's guest is ultrarunner, race director and fellow "dude from Iowa who moved to Colorado" Don Reichelt. Over the last few years Don has really pushed his limits in the ultrarunning world. Through his experiences in various 100 mile races, he learned, developed and adapted into the fantastic (and fast!!) runner he is today. All in preparation for his biggest challenge yet- Big's Backyard Ultra- a sadistic race in Tennessee that has redefined the phrase "battle of wills". In this event, runners must complete a 4.1 mile loop every hour until their is only one person left standing (or limping, or stumbling). It's truly a battle of self as every person but one chooses to pull their self out as hours turn into days. It's a race for a person trying to find their limits, which is exactly what Don is trying to do. In this episode we chat about his journey. How and why he took in Leadman as a relatively inexperienced ultrarunner, what led him to his third place finish at last year's brutally hot Badwater, and his training plan for his upcoming Big's Backyard Ultra. Hope you guys enjoy the show! I really loved hanging with Don and am honored he shared his stories with us! We talk to Courtney Dauwalter about Big's Backyard Ultra, her lack of training plan and diet and whether she prefers cold or hot weather running....Grrrr!
Over the last few years Courtney Dauwalter has exploded onto the ultrarunning scene with legendary performance after legendary performance. She won the Moab 240 outright by over 10 hours, she set the second fastest time in women's history while winning Western States 100, she endured a 4 mile loop over and over again for 67 hours chalking up 279.2 miles in the insanity that is Big's Backyard Ultra, she even got first in a 100 mile race after losing her eyesight for the last ten miles. And those are only a few adventures from her life of racing! In this episode, we focus on Courtney's mindset. How does she endure the massive amount of pain and struggle that comes along with ultrarunning? How does she stay positive and silence self doubts? How does her positive outlook and relaxed demeanor bring about her success? (I was also super psyched to chat with her because up until a few years ago Courtney was a middle school science teacher, and, as a middle school science teacher, ....respect!) I really enjoyed this episode and I think you will too! The biggest thing I took away was how her positive go with the flow spirit allows her to fearlessly pursue all the various opportunities that come her way.
