Well the dust is still settling from the betrayal that was our System of a Down episode, and it is positively palpable in the air. However, this ravaged warground is the perfect location for the power of Fugazi's "The Argument". Steve, Marc, and Eric spin this 2001 album, discuss DC Hardcore, the Dischord Records scene, the Post-Hardcore genre having a current moment, and the history of Fugazi. Then your hosts dive in to the track-by-track review of this genre-transcending record. And after that experience your hosts are changed. Scream is one of these iconic bands that we all heard about when we were young, apart from our walking encyclopedia Knut, who probably witnessed many of the DC Hardcore bands back in his 20s and 30s, but for the regular people among us the early DC years and the bands that came from that area and which were on Dischord or later on Jade Tree are legendary. Minor Threat, State of Alert, Scream - the latter even released the first full-length ever on Dischord. Now they're back! With a new full-length! With collaborations galore and with great songs! And … with enough time on Pete Stahl's hands to sit down and talk with us about many, many things! Enjoy another interview with a “living legend”! The latter is a term that Pete doesn't like and he explains why in this interview, but we also talk about the variability of songs, moods and genres on DC Special. He also explains why the record is neither only a reflection of our times nor only a trip down nostalgia lane. He explains his love for Dead Kennedys and even why he - a DC guy - now likes the Dodgers and which kind of music he likes to listen to when going on a hike. Enjoy these more than 50 minutes with a man who has played with the Sunn O))) guys, with most of the Desert Sessions folks and even with someone Pete more or less discovered, a guy called Dave Grohl - might have heard about him, guy might make it big one day.
In this episode Andrew Ferris (guitar/vocals)and Jamie Burchell (bass) join me to discuss how Jetplane Landing was formed after their previous band Cuckoo disbanded in the late-90s. Zero For Conduct, the band's debut album, was recorded in Jamie's homestudio in Bognor Regis and released on the band's own Smalltown America label in 2001. Jetplane Landing would release three more albums before calling it a day in 2014. Andrew and Jamie were joined in Jetplane by Jamie's brother Raife on drums and later Cahir O'Doherty joined on second guitar. Maybe soured by their experience on a major label in Cuckoo and definitely taking inspiration from Fugazi and DC Hardcore, Andrew and Jamie went it alone, theirs was a DIY punk/post-hardcore work ethic that was absolutely inspirational – tours of the UK and Ireland were often over 60 dates long. I first saw them 2003 and they were just incredible live. Zero For Conduct is a truly fantastic album and remains one of my favourite albums from the 00s.
Today's interview is with Cody Jones. Cody grew up with a love for two things: DC Hardcore, and toys. And after pursuing a career in education, decided to leave a comfortable career to open his own toy store, the Toy Lair, here in Richmond, VA. Now a year in, Cody and his friends are bringing the worlds of underground art, and toys together in a really awesome way, from curating a selection of new and vintage items, to bringing new ones to life through their own production work.
I get to sit down with the man who is probably the most influential and pivotal to modern punk rock guitar playing as we know it. Listen in as I punish Brian for an hour and consistently remind him of this fact.https://www.jimdunlop.com/
Pete Chramiec is a founding member and guitarist for the pivotal hardcore band Verbal Assault. After a 20 year break, Verbal Assault are playing again, with shows booked on both coasts in 2022 and throughout 2023. In this episode, longtime pals Joe and Pete discuss what is was like for Pete to get back rock n roll shape , what spawned the reunion and why the shows are so special to him. They also talk Joe's 4th favorite subject, "crossover", how VA's lyrics have come home to roost and Pete tells us how Dave Grohl changed the trajectory of his music career with a single phone call. They play a few tunes and Pete makes Joe laugh a lot.https://atomicactionrecords.bandcamp.com/album/trialhttps://verbalassault.com/https://www.bicyclehomebuilding.com/Tour Stories is sponsored by Izotope. Swiz is one of the great, lost DC Hardcore bands of the late 80's/early 90's. While plenty of ink has been spilt about their neighbors, Soul Side, Shudder to Think, Scream and of course, Fugazi. Swiz seems largely forgotten to time save for singer Shawn Brown's notoriety as Dag Nasty's pre Can I Say front man. None of their output is currently available on the music streaming services so wanting to hear the band today takes some effort (thanks to those dedicated fans who have uploaded their records to YouTube). All a shame really as even after all these years and hundreds of bands playing this same style later, the bands's 1988 self-titled LP still packs a wallop. Clocking in at just over twenty minutes, it's a fierce, tight testament to what this music was always supposed to be, urgent, exciting and to the point.
Zach Barocas, celebrated percussionist (of Jawbox, Bells>, The New Freedom Sound)who has been featured in Modern Drummer as well as having a Ludwig sponsorship, sits with us to speak of the finer points of DC Hardcore, Jazz, recording, the freedom within New Freedom Sound, and the interesting methods used to build the songs under his new banner. A true legend. Not to be missed.
Dan sits down with Guitarist, vocalist and graphic artist Jason Farrell to discuss his work with DC Hardcore mainstays Swiz, Blue Tip and Red Hare as well his ongoing involvement with Dischord Records.
Washington, DC is known as the birthplace of hardcore punk. The raw, innovative, new sound coming out of the nation's capital in the late 1970s is examined in Shayna Maskell's Politics as Sound: The Washington, DC, Hardcore Scene, 1978-1983 (U Illinois Press, 2021). Maskell examines the DC hardcore scene between 1978 and 1983, focusing on the bands Bad Brains, Minor Threat, State of Alert (S.OA.), Government Issue (G.I.), and Faith. She explores the culturally, historical, and political impact of DC as the site for the emergence of hardcore punk. A brief history of Washington DC situates the scene in a broader cultural narrative that moves beyond just the music's aesthetics. Focusing on race, class, and gender in the hardcore scene and specifically on the ways in which the scene embodied and embraced white, middle-class masculinity, Maskell presents the complicated and at times contradictory representations of these signifiers that were born out of hardcore. Maskell uses interviews with participants, albums, and ephemera—zines, posters, flyers—to document and analyze this historical moment. Maskell's work is a strong examination of hardcore and its broader impact in the punk subculture, especially when it intersects with race, class, and gender. Rebekah Buchanan is an Associate Professor of English and Director of English Education at Western Illinois University. Her research focuses on feminism, activism, and literacy practices in youth culture, specifically through zines and music. Learn more about your ad choices. Part 2 of our interview with Better Than A Thousand drummer and guitarist Ken Olden. And again - no shortage on great stories. Check this episode and get to know how Ken and his friends kickstarted DC Hardcore again and how it may have conflicted with the old "Dischord Records crowd". Setting up a studio in his bedroom and bathroom, bootlegging his own band's records, and having a member of one of the biggest rock bands of that time - No Doubt - as a roadie, just to name a few anecdotes. Plus, get to know how Better Than A Thousand eventually slowly faded out after being way more proactive than any member of the band ever anticipated.

In this second episode, Donald and Colin hear stories from musician Dino Tarasin, guitarist and vocalist for the Bangkok-based rock band Degaruda. Dino talks about making music inspired by Karen Carpenter and DC Hardcore (a politically-charged kind of American punk) in a country in the grips of social division and military rule. The hosts debate the controversy surrounding the Wikileaks release of the "murdered by the sky" transmission from Mars (supposedly), and Donald explains what the deal is with illegal immigration in Thailand. Written and Produced by Donald and Colin. Edited and Mixed by Colin. Music by Degaruda (http://degaruda.bandcamp.com/), courtesy of Dino Tarasin. Recorded at the Friese-Greene Club in Bangkok Thailand. Special thanks to Izotope (www.izotope.com) for audio editing software. Many grew up in the Georgetown and Northwest areas of DC, where they developed a sense of social justice by witnessing its injustices first hand - they were rich kids living in a privileged world, a social elite. Some of the many legendary DC bands: Minor Threat, Teen Idols, S.O.A., FUGAZI, Bad Brains, Dag Nasty, Swiz, Iron Cross, VOID, The Faith, Youth Brigade, Government Issue, Scream, Marginal Man, Gray matter, EMBRACE, Soul Side, rites Of Spring, Ignition, Worlds Collide, Damnation A.D., Battery, Ashes, Gauge, SEGMENT 3: Essential DC Hardcore Records from Our collections: DAG NASTY - Can I Say Original release 1986 Dischord Records Re-Released in 2002 on CD - CD contains bonus material Dag Nasty was a Washington D.C. melodic hardcore band formed in 1985 by guitarist Brian Baker of Minor Threat. Their style of less aggressive, melodic hardcore was influential to emocore, as well as post-hardcore. Check them out here: http://www.daghouse.com/ BAD BRAINS - Rock For Light Original Release 1983 on PVC Records Reissued 1987 Caroline Records ReMixed and Released 1991 Caroline Records. Bad Brains is an American hardcore punk band formed in Washington DC in 1977. They are widely regarded as among the pioneers of hardcore punk. Bad Brains developed a fast and intense punk rock sound which came to be labeled "hardcore", and was often played faster and more emphatically than the music of many of their peers. The unique factor of the band's music was the fact that they played more complex rhythms than other hardcore punk bands, also adapting non-punk style guitar riffs and solos into their songs. The second full-length album by hardcore punk pioneers Bad Brains, released in 1983. A previous album, Bad Brains, was released in 1982 but only on cassette, therefore making Rock for Light Bad Brains' first proper album. https://www.facebook.com/badbrains http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bad_Brains MINOR THREAT - Out of Step Original Release - 1983 Dischord Records Out of Step is the sole studio album by American hardcore punk band Minor Threat. It was released on 45 RPM vinyl in April 1983 through Dischord Records. After a temporary break-up in 1982, Minor Threat entered Inner Ear Studios in January 1983 to record Out of Step. Recording duties were handled by Don Zientara. While the lyrics on their early EPs were an outlet for MacKaye's message, the lyrics on Out of Step deal mainly with friendships and problems associated with them. http://www.dischord.com/band/minor-threat http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minor_Threat Other Links and Info: Dischord Records - http://www.dischord.com/ NYHC Book - http://www.bazillionpoints.com/shop/nyhc-new-york-hardcore-1980-1990-by-tony-rettman/ Bike Mechanic Tales From The Road And Workshop - http://www.velopress.com/books/bike-mechanic/ Cannondale CAAD10 - http://www.cannondale.com/nam_en/2015/bikes/road/elite-road/caad10 Nigel Tufnel - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nigel_Tufnel Our Blog: Deathwish Racing - http://deathwishracing.blogspot.com/ Become a Mountain Bike Radio Member Email Kyle Email Mountain Bike Radio
