This week, we dial into North Carolina for a comprehensive conversation with Grammy-nominated songwriter MC Taylor, who for the last decade and a half has created heart-wrenchingly personal and subtly political music fronting the acclaimed roots group Hiss Golden Messenger. With his newest release Quietly Blowing It, Taylor continues to tell stories that are at turns hopeful and devastating – as if deeply examining his own faults and features as a father, husband, citizen and artist can help us understand our own struggles during this deeply strange time. Despite the often delicate delivery of his vocal performances, it isn't a shock to see that Taylor, who grew up in California before heading to the south, did start in the hardcore and punk worlds before he became one of the faces of the Americana resurgence. While a song like “Hardlytown” feels like a jangly lost Basement Tapes take from The Band, Taylor subtly mines his own confusion about how broken our once-ambitious country has become. Why can't we come together to address climate change, gun violence or systemic poverty? Is he doing enough? While Taylor has been open about examining his own depression and doubt over the last few years, it's through these songs that we can see a light at the end of the dark tunnel forming. Maybe it's the personal acceptance of the confusion and helplessness that makes Quietly Blowing It pack such a quiet punch and seem somehow sonically uplifting. During our conversation, Taylor would be the first to tell you that while folky slow-burn songs like “Way Back In The Way Back” seem to exalt the healing power of nature while questioning the broken bureaucracies that govern our unique American way of life (“up with the mountains, down with the system!”) he isn't trying to make a statement. One thing that we all learned to do during our ongoing lockdowns in 2020 and beyond is to think smaller. We don't have to change everything from the moment we wake up. Maybe it's about going within and seeing the world just from the scope of your own neighborhood, your own family, your own green growing hissing backyard. A song doesn't have to solve it all in one go. Gathering confidence from in his previous standout records Heart Like A Levee (2016), Hallelujah Anyhow (2017) and the Grammy-nominated Terms Of Surrender (2019), it's clear that while the last few years haven't been easy for Taylor, he's reaching new heights creatively. Quietly Blowing It may seem like a defeatist message – but actually its more like laying all the cards on the table. Honesty is freeing. Taylor will be embarking on a rare solo tour coming up, which would be an amazing way to see his intimate brand of songwriting up close.

Better known as the guitarist for the Corey Taylor led Stone Sour, Josh Rand suddenly found his musical being left the equivalent of alone and rudderless at the completion of Stone Sour's two-year touring cycle for their last studio album Hydrograd. While Taylor has a little side project by the name of Slipknot to satiate his cravings, Rand found himself unable to sit idly by and wait for Slipknot's album/tour cycle to finish and found himself quickly creating musical content and exploring new sounds. An accomplished and dedicated musician – not just guitarist – Rand immersed himself in his art, assembling a body of work within the hard rock genre that, although fitting within the acceptable parameters of hard rock music, was not something he felt would suit Stone Sour once they resumed duties. In deciding to record and release his music through a different project Rand found himself steering clear of another male singer to handle vocal duties, probably wisely deciding that any attempt to equal or better Stone Sour's frontman would prove futile.Almost by a twist of fate Rand met Casandra Carson and when he heard her pour her heart into her singing he knew he had lucked upon the final ingredient needed to complete The L.I.F.E Project. While musically the songs on the band's debut EP bear striking similarities to that of Stone Sour – which only serves to outline how strong Rand's contributions are – Carson's aggressively raw, yet stunningly beautiful vocal contributions set it significantly apart as an entity of its own and a project to release the growing frustrations Rand felt being away from music. With The L.I.F.E Project having already released two singles from the EP and planning to eventually release each track separately, Rand has the aura of a man finally back at ease. This is a musical project that will stand on its own merit and rightfully so. Although it will undoubtedly be seen by many as a side project for Rand it is much more than that.Earlier this week Rand sat down with HEAVY to introduce us to his new baby, The L.I.F.E Project."For me, it was just about doing something outside of Stone Sour for the first time,” he began. “Musically I knew going into it that I wanted it to have a female vocalist for the project. With a male vocalist, I'm already in one band with somebody that's pretty good (laughs) so trying to find someone as good or better would really be a high, high task. Also, I didn't want that comparison, because I knew the way that I write you are going to hear similarities, it's just who I am. You can't expect me to wake up a day later and play like Joe Bonamassa. It's not gonna happen. So people were like hey, we hear similarities and it's like well, of course you are because I contribute so much music to Stone Sour and have for decades. I'm not gonna wake up and be a different person, you know. It just is what it is so another reason having a female vocalist made sense to me was it makes it a little bit different... actually a lot different... but there was music that I had written over the years that I would never submit to Stone Sour because it wouldn't fit what I contribute to that band. Now with Cassandra, I can branch into these different directions and play piano stuff and stuff like that. I know we have that kind of stuff in Stone Sour but it's Stone Sour's and for me to play would be really hard to compete with Corey who also writes those kinds of songs, its really what his fortay is. So with this, I was able to do that. Really the idea with The L.I.F.E Project is how I approach Stone Sour and still be willing to move forward which is I'm just gonna write whatever the hell I wanna write and actually now between having both of these powerhouse singers, obviously Corey on one side and Cassandra - once people really hear her and hear her diversity, especially with this first EP - it allows me as a writer the opportunity to have the best of both worlds. As far as I'm concerned I have one of the best male vocalists in hard rock and metal and I have a female vocalist who I think can be as equally powerful if given the opportunity and time to develop. It's an exciting time. I'm really lucky and it's pretty exciting to have that outlet."In the full interview, Josh runs us through the songs on the EP and discusses the warmth of again creating new music, talks about his role on many aspects of the EP from recording to playing all of the instruments, introduces us further to Cassandra who has perhaps one of the best-untapped voices currently in rock, extending the band to include touring musicians and more.

Who says women cannot put an end to a war? Who says women are not good at putting to pressure on their governments to deliver? Liberian women have proven to be leaders worthy to talk about in the discourse of leadership and security in Africa. Liberia this uncolonized West-African Country had to through two Civil wars before Peace could Finally Arrive. Post-independence Africa witnessed numerous conflicts, especially in West Africa; in the Casamance region of Senegal, in Sierra Leone and of course Liberia. Today, Liberia continues to experience governance challenges under President George Weah. Such challenges were partly responsible for the outbreak of the second civil war in 1999. But women are in fact in the lead in ensuring government accountability to avoid a slip back to the 1999 ugly scenario. We may not be pessimistic but should be cautious. Liberia’s second civil war ended in 2003. Who was behind the end of this war? In this programme, I shall take you through the role of the Liberian women peace movement under the leadership of a Nobel peace prize winner and a peace advocate, Leymar Gbowee in ending the country’s second civil war. The war erupted when rebel group, Liberians United for Reconciliation and Democracy (LURD) emerged in the north of the country. These were disenfranchised warlords who started confrontation with Taylor’s regime in 1999. The country’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission estimated that over 250, 000 people were killed and about one million more displaced. The war also destroyed the economy and livelihoods in the country. and the entire Liberian nation was traumatised and hopes shattered. Rape was more evident during the war which triggered the rise of the Mass Action for Peace; the women peace movement in responding to the crisis, with the goal of attaining peace. As rebels advanced towards Monrovia, Leymah Gbowee, a woman, got inspired to prepare a response; a desire that brought Christian and Muslim women together to form a peace movement as an effective response mechanism. While Taylor tried to use the church to advance his goal, Leymah provided a counternarrative; the idea to bring women of both the Christian and Muslim faiths to start a peace movement. In the context of situational leadership analysis, Gbowee’s ideas were religiously inspired that motivated the peace movement. The unity found at the heart of the Mass Action for Peace which included the women peace movement was a struggle to attain peace. Their shared experience as mothers, sisters, aunts and daughters united them on a common purpose. Bernard Bass and Ronald Riggio posit that transformational leadership is anchored on the involvement of both men and women-the gender dimension of leadership. Gbowee’s leadership style of persistence, energising the women group towards their common goal paid dividend. A peace deal was signed, and a transitional government set up to oversee a democratic election. This election marked a new beginning of hope, democracy and stability in Liberia. The second Liberian civil war impacted negatively on the people: from loss of lives to rape and pillage. It is worthy to note that women were the key drivers of peace in the country through various forms of engagement. Liberia became better off as the country underwent a post-conflict development and peacebuilding process, including Security Sector Reform (SSR) as part of its transitional justice program. In addition, the election of Allen Johnson Sirleaf marked the country’s true transition to democracy; Liberia stands out as a beacon of democracy and stability in West Africa. It is safe to conclude that Liberia is heading towards democratic consolidation. Without the non-violent, yet effective response from the women peace movement, it is arguable that Liberia would have now been a failed state. Liberian has won!!!

Taylor Clark is a 22-year-old entrepreneur and fashion designer dedicated to changing the world – one shirt at a time. Growing up with her parent’s bridal gown business, Taylor was exposed to the fashion and business industry at a young age. Her infatuation for bridal gowns led her to travel across the country to Los Angeles, CA to attend the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) and pursue her dreams of being a fashion designer. While Taylor’s main goal within FIDM was to be accepted into their 3rd year program, a full debut runway show that attracts 10,000+ industry professionals, she sadly just missed the mark. Little did she know, this would be a turning point on her mission to change the world. Taylor’s endearing vulnerability in sharing her downfalls, as well as her triumphs, makes her not only a pinnacle of humility, but an incredibly relatable human being to anyone who’s ever felt lost at some point in their life. After a year of feeling stuck, Taylor made it on the Gary Vaynerchuk show where she asked how to shake the feeling of dissatisfaction with her current state. His answer sparked a movement inside of her, and Taylor embarked on a 30-day plan to launch her very own clothing line: Digital Nomad Apparel (DNA). As of now, Taylor is ever growing and expanding her clothing line toward her vision of a global massive collaboration. Her end goal is a to be a platform for designers from all across the globe to show and get credit for their creations, essentially changing the way we view fashion today. Brandon ‘Danger' Dillon is based in Columbia city, Indiana and is perhaps best known for his association with the Full Tang Clan. Throwing a diverse range of knives with spin, instinctive and no spin, Brandon epitomises the experiential and innovative approach that defines the best of the backyard throwing movement. In this interview we explore Brandon’s origin story as a thrower, his evolution and his passion for the Art of the Thunk. During the interview Brandon was joined by the quiet man of the Full Tang Clan - Taylor Hull. While Taylor was happy, for the most part, to allow Brandon to speak on his behalf, it was clear from the outset that he is held in high regard by the Clan and that he is blazing a trail in throwing competition despite being a relative newcomer himself. It was an absolute delight to talk to both Brandon and Taylor and I hope you get as much from our conversation as I did.
