This week, we're with three of the judges from this year's World Food Photography Awards which took place earlier this week at The Mall Galleries in London. The competition, first known as the Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year, has pretty much put food photography on the map since 2011. With more than 120,000 entries from nearly 100 countries over that time, this year the judging panel led by legendary food photographer David Loftus, assessed 9000 images from professional and amateur photographers from 50 countries. Gilly caught up with 3 of the judges, food stylist, Sal Henley, Skye Trayler of the London-based agency At Trayler and Angela Nicholson, founder of SheClicks, an award-winning community for female photographers to talk through the runners up and winning images in two of the categories. Pop over to Gilly's Substack to see the images for the runners up and the winners of those two categories on Extra Bites. If you've ever looked at a photographer whose work stops you mid-scroll - where every image feels like it's saying something, where there's a world behind the food rather than just a dish in front of a lens - and wondered how someone actually builds a career like that, this episode is for you.We sat down with Costas Millas, a food photographer, stylist, and art director based in the UK, whose food art stories and work with brands like Fortnum & Mason and Waitrose have made him one of the most distinctive voices in our industry. Costas talks honestly about making the leap to full-time creative work, how he built a broader offering without losing focus, what it really took to land clients at the highest level, and the self-published book that brought his personal work into the world. This is a conversation about creative identity, intentional business building, and what it looks like to let your personal work become your most powerful professional asset.SEE MORE FROM COSTAS:'NO COLOUR' by Costas Millas: https://www.madebymrmillas.com/shop/p/no-colour-printed-limited-editionPortfolio: https://www.madebymrmillas.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/madebymrmillas/Linked In: www.linkedin.com/in/madebymrmillasFocus & Flourish, Photography Business Talk is a podcast for food photographers and creative entrepreneurs who want to build structured, sustainable, and profitable businesses. Stop Rushing Contracts and Start Protecting Your Work A seven second truth most creatives feel You get an exciting client email, then the contract arrives and your chest tightens as legal pages show up. A deeper question we rarely say out loud What would change if contracts felt like clarity instead of confusion in your creative business? Meet the guest who makes legal feel human Mica McCook sits down with Rob Finkelstein, a lawyer, pastry chef, and food blogger who helps creatives understand contracts, licensing, and business protection in a simple way. What this episode gently unpacks This conversation opens the door to the hidden world behind creative work. You learn how contracts define ownership of your images, why licensing matters more than most realize, and how influencer-style agreements often miss the mark for photographers. Rob explains how negotiation is a normal part of business and not a risk to your opportunity. You also hear why forming an LLC protects your personal life from business risk and how even “small” contract details like legal jurisdiction can shape real outcomes. The episode also touches on supplier diversity certifications and how they can open doors for creatives from underrepresented communities. What you can take into your own business You will walk away understanding that asking questions is part of professional work. You will feel more confident reading contracts line by line. You will see that protecting your work and income is not complicated when you understand the basics. You will also feel encouraged to treat your creative path like a real business with structure and intention. A final reminder to carry with you You are allowed to slow down before signing. You are allowed to ask. You are allowed to understand every word before you agree. Your creativity deserves that level of care.

Breaking Barriers in Food Photography What if the opportunity you're waiting for doesn't exist yet? Have you ever wondered what would happen if you stopped waiting and started building anyway? In this episode, we meet Rani and Uduak, the creative duo behind 117 Collective, a food and lifestyle photography team based in Lagos, Nigeria. They have worked with global brands like Coca-Cola, Baileys, and Krispy Kreme while carving out a space for African food to be seen, valued, and celebrated. From unseen to undeniable Rani and Uduak share how they built a business in a market that did not fully understand the value of food photography. They walked into restaurants, created demand, and trusted their vision even when confidence felt shaky. As their work grew, they faced imposter syndrome, pricing challenges, and the pressure of commercial expectations. Over time, they discovered something deeper. African cuisine was not being visually honored. That realization shifted everything. They moved from chasing perfection to creating images that feel real, cultural, and alive. Now, they are expanding into storytelling through documentary work, highlighting voices and stories that deserve to be seen. What you can take with you This conversation invites you to trust your instincts, honor your creativity, and step forward even when the path feels unclear. Keep going If this episode speaks to you, share it with someone building something meaningful. Your work matters. Keep showing up.

Emma Dunham is an award-winning food photographer, author, and founder of The Food Photography Academy. She helps bloggers, photographers, content creators, and food professionals shoot, style, and curate scroll-stopping images that elevate their brand and support their business goals. Through commercial work, creative retreats, and training thousands online, she has built a business around bridging the gap between brilliant storytelling and the visuals to match.  Photography is one of the most powerful tools in a food blogger's business. In this episode, you'll learn why your camera gear matters less than you think and how to create images that spark emotion and stop the scroll. Emma shares pitfalls to avoid, the three essential angles to use, and the must-have items to keep in your kit bag. Key points discussed include: Lead with emotion: Decide the scene and feeling you want your photo to evoke before you pick up the camera. Find your golden thread: Create consistent style cues across seasons so your brand is instantly recognizable. Avoid yellow food tones: Cool down your white balance for fresh, appetizing images. Light simply: A window and foil are often all you need for professional lighting. Know your hero: Make your main dish bigger, brighter, bolder, and clearer than anything else in the frame. Practice relentlessly: Building sets and compositions gets faster and easier with repetition. Build a kit bag: Stock up on paintbrushes, tweezers, cotton swabs, and fake ice for quick fixes. Use color harmony: A simple color wheel can unlock bold pairings that elevate your brand. Connect with Emma Dunham Website | Instagram

Editing more efficiently in Lightroom, using AI thoughtfully in your food photography, and developing a visual aesthetic that's uniquely yours with Roberta Dall'Alba. ----- Welcome to episode 529 of The Food Blogger Pro Podcast! This week on the podcast, Bjork interviews Roberta Dall'Alba. In this podcast interview, Bjork and Roberta discuss the importance of having your own distinct style or photography aesthetic to build your brand and why editing is such an essential part of this process. Roberta is an incredible food and travel photographer (trust me, you need to check out her food photographs!) and was a 2023 Lightroom Ambassador. Needless to say, she has spent a lot of time experimenting with Lightroom. Roberta dives into how she approaches editing food photos with integrity, efficiency, and her own unique style. From navigating AI tools responsibly to building a signature look in Lightroom, she offers practical tips to help creators stay authentic while working smarter. This is an excellent interview to help you take your photography and editing to the next level. Three episode takeaways: How to use AI thoughtfully in food photography and editing — Roberta shares her approach to using generative AI tools in editing. While she's open to retouching photos, she avoids adding anything artificial, always considering if edits will help readers successfully replicate the recipe and/or align with her values. Efficient editing leads to better results — Roberta walks through her streamlined Lightroom workflow, from importing and filtering/organizing, to color grading, taking a step back, and final reviews on mobile, to ensure efficient, high-quality results (and to avoid over-editing). Build a visual style that's truly yours — She emphasizes the importance of creating your own presets over buying someone else's, why you should deepen your understanding of color theory, and how to develop editing efficiencies that reflect your brand's unique style. Your photo will make an impact. It will not only be a work of beauty for other creatives to get inspired by but also catch the attention of brands, who will immediately be able to visualise how you'll work with their products. But when the miss is embedded in composition or the subtleties of lighting, it goes unseen by most creators and leaves them wondering.Making the hero shine doesn't require fancy gear or complicated techniques. Love the episode? Send me a text & tell me.Editing is directly linked to business results. It is the finishing touch to our creativity and to that raw photo. And if that end product does not blow the viewer's minds, it's a red alert - a gap we may not see, but clients most definitely will, which will begin to show up as fewer clients, clients not returning, confusion, and second-guessing ourselves.Editing isn't just about creating a magnificent photo. It's about creating a solid business on the foundation of solid skills because our editing skills position us as experts & increase our value to the client. This week on the podcast, the queen of editing, Roberta Dallalba, continues to share powerful editing tips that not only elevate our photography but also grow our business. Clients can love us. They can love our work ethic, our creativity, our talent, the raw photo out of the camera, the experience of working with us, but at the end of the day, if our editing doesn't match their needs, none of that matters. Read more at https://myfoodlens.com Follow Dyutima on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/dyutima_myfoodlens/ Show notes available at https://www.myfoodlens.com/blog/121-photo-editing-tips-to-elevate-your-photography-grow-your-business-with-roberta-dallalba-part-2Have a question? Breathe Pictures Photography Podcast: Documentaries and Interviews

My guest on the Photowalk show today, Liza Gershman, is a travel and food photographer who's just as interested in the people and places behind the meal as the food itself. Her work has taken her to over 50 countries, always with a focus on storytelling and travel, whether through the steam rising off a street vendor's stall or the quiet moments shared at a family table.  Liza's path into food photography wasn't necessarily planned, however. It started with a yes, and grew from there. In this episode, we talk about the role food plays in identity, how travel shapes the creative eye, and the way photography can slow us down long enough to really notice what's in front of us.  From the mailbag today, you might want to brace yourself before the first letter lands, Charles Mason is to blame, with a tale involving something he calls photographer's knee. Craig Wilson's up a mountain with his camera, Paul Friday's wrapping himself in cotton wool (the reason will become clear), and Bob Shonkoff has a 4am story that might just have you glancing over your shoulder. Plus, we reveal the winner of last month's ‘context' photo assignment, and there's a fresh new challenge to get stuck into. Links to all guests and features will be on the show page, my sincere thanks to Arthelper, who sponsor this show, plus our Extra Milers, without whom we wouldn't be walking each week. Ughhh! The loop of doubt and insecurity continues. The truth is that this loop exists because we are missing an essential part of the business - boundaries.Boundaries and rules for the way we do things. In fancy words, a sales process. As we continue our mindblowing series with Candice Ward, a food photographer with a background in corporate sales, she talks about the absolute necessity of having a sales process in place. She shares the essential steps in a sales process, transitioning from pitching to closing the deals, the best way to handle objections, using a sales process to position yourself as a premium service.. and so much more. Having a sales process in place gives us the highest level of clarity, and when we have clarity, the client has clarity. .. because it comes through in everything we do and say.If you've felt shaky sending out your rates, been unsure about how to proceed with a project, negotiate, or clear objections - having a sales process in place is your answer.Read more at https://myfoodlens.com Follow Dyutima on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/dyutima_myfoodlens/ Show notes available at https://www.myfoodlens.com/blog/118-how-to-use-linkedin-video-pitching-to-book-more-clients-with-less-effort-with-candice-ward-part-3Have a question? Ashley Strickland Freeman is the creator of the blog Little Black Skillet. Just like a "Little Black Dress," she strives to create approachable, everyday recipes her audience can trust and turn to again and again. In addition to developing recipes and food styling for some of her favorite brands, she's currently working on her fourth cookbook. In this episode, you'll discover the essential equipment for capturing mouthwatering food photos, how props can make or break your shots, and the role of color theory in food photography. Key points discussed include: - Invest in a quality camera and lens: Having the right equipment, such as a DSLR camera and a versatile zoom lens, can make a significant difference in your food photography. - Use a sturdy tripod: A geared tripod, like the Manfrotto, allows you to achieve precise angles and compositions for your shots. - Experiment with budget-friendly props: Look for unique items at thrift stores, fabric shops, and even your own home to create visually appealing scenes. - Embrace color theory: Understand how complementary colors can enhance the visual appeal of your food photos. - Prioritize composition: Use odd numbers, multiples, and strategic placement to guide the viewer's eye through your images. - Enhance food appearance: Techniques like brushing cheese with oil or using thickened syrups can help make your food look fresh and irresistible. - Embrace the "mess": Don't be afraid to capture the natural imperfections and realistic details that make your food photos more approachable. - Practice and trust your intuition: Continuous practice, studying other photographers' work, and having confidence in your own style are key to improving your food photography.
