Congress just put the Smithsonian director on the hot seat over some of the most ridiculous taxpayer-funded exhibits you'll ever see. Regular Americans take their families to the National Museum of American History expecting the story of our country. Instead, they're finding overtly sexual transgender displays, including content involving kids, and a staff toolkit that flat-out labels politeness and objectivity as white supremacy. House Republicans laid out the photos, the diary entries, and the MASS Action materials in black and white. Nearly a billion dollars a year in public money is flowing into this. The director's answers were pure deflection. This isn't preserving history. It's rewriting it to fit an ideology most parents never signed up for. It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She hosts author Corban Addison to discuss his recent book Wastelands: The True Story of Farm Country On Trial. First, Emma dives into updates on the indictment of George Santos, Dianne Feinstein's return, the end of the COVID national emergency, Israel's continuing genocide against Palestine, Rep. Rashida Tlaib and Sen. Bernie Sanders teaming up for a Nakba day, healthcare legislation, and Amazon's tax breaks, before parsing through the absolute sh*t show that was CNN's Town Hall with Donald Trump, and the Media's complete capitulation to his celebrity. Corban Addison then joins as he walks Emma through his story on the real-world legal thriller that was the Mass Action lawsuit against North Carolina's hog farms, beginning with a discussion of the broader legal avenues this case followed, before stepping back to explore the history of North Carolina's hog industry, which arose in the 1960s following the Tobacco industry's collapse as Wendell Murphy, owner of the largest feed mill at the time, took a page out of the book of Tyson's chicken industry, contracting the floundering NC farms to be packed full of his pigs. Moving forward, Addison dives into the slow but sure monopolization of the region's industry, culminating in the purchase of Murphy's Smithfield Foods by the WH Group, the world's biggest pork manufacturer based out of China, who continued to streamline the production in the US, as China did not allow the same industry tactics that North Carolina saw. Parsing through these practices, Corban and Emma tackle the creation of mass cesspools of hog waste by these corporations, and the complete disregard for the environmental impact or the well-being of their neighbors. After looking at the horrors that came out of this regulatory disaster, Addison wraps up by assessing the compensation in the case, and why, ultimately, the only solution is federal regulation. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder, diving into the genuine horror that is Dianne Feinstein's staff (and Democratic leadership) letting her return to the Senate, Kowalski from Nebraska calls in with his assessment of today's interview, and Charlie from New Jersey dives into the Mainstream media's obsession with Donald Trump and their co-dependent relationship with far-right politics. They also tackle the indictment of George Santos, the right-wing response to the Allen, TX shooter citing Tim Pool and LibsofTikTok, and Lucy from Brooklyn dives into the role of NDAs in elite culture, and the despicable and alien behavior of today's ultra-wealthy, plus, your calls and IMs! In an effort to overcome this predicament, a new generation of militants hope to transform the Democratic Party or use its ballot to build forces inside it for an eventual “dirty break.” In his new book, Moody argues this electoral orientation is a trap and that socialists should instead build class and social struggle and galvanize a militant minority as the preconditions for the formation of a working class party. Get the book, Breaking the Impasse: https://www.haymarketbooks.org/books/1873-breaking-the-impasse Speakers: Kim Moody was a founder of Labor Notes in the US and the author of several books on labour and politics including Breaking the Impasse: Electoral Politics, Mass Action & the New Socialist Movement in the United States (2022); Tramps & Trade Union Travelers: Internal Migration and Organized Labor in Gilded Age America (2017); and On New Terrain: How Capital Is Reshaping The Battleground Of Class War; all from Haymarket. The role of women peace movement in ending the Liberian second civil war: A leadership analysis

ALC Pan-African Radio

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 2, 2020 9:11

Who says women cannot put an end to a war? Who says women are not good at putting to pressure on their governments to deliver? Liberian women have proven to be leaders worthy to talk about in the discourse of leadership and security in Africa. Liberia this uncolonized West-African Country had to through two Civil wars before Peace could Finally Arrive. Post-independence Africa witnessed numerous conflicts, especially in West Africa; in the Casamance region of Senegal, in Sierra Leone and of course Liberia. Today, Liberia continues to experience governance challenges under President George Weah. Such challenges were partly responsible for the outbreak of the second civil war in 1999. But women are in fact in the lead in ensuring government accountability to avoid a slip back to the 1999 ugly scenario. We may not be pessimistic but should be cautious. Liberia’s second civil war ended in 2003. Who was behind the end of this war? In this programme, I shall take you through the role of the Liberian women peace movement under the leadership of a Nobel peace prize winner and a peace advocate, Leymar Gbowee in ending the country’s second civil war. The war erupted when rebel group, Liberians United for Reconciliation and Democracy (LURD) emerged in the north of the country. These were disenfranchised warlords who started confrontation with Taylor’s regime in 1999. The country’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission estimated that over 250, 000 people were killed and about one million more displaced. The war also destroyed the economy and livelihoods in the country. and the entire Liberian nation was traumatised and hopes shattered. Rape was more evident during the war which triggered the rise of the Mass Action for Peace; the women peace movement in responding to the crisis, with the goal of attaining peace. As rebels advanced towards Monrovia, Leymah Gbowee, a woman, got inspired to prepare a response; a desire that brought Christian and Muslim women together to form a peace movement as an effective response mechanism. While Taylor tried to use the church to advance his goal, Leymah provided a counternarrative; the idea to bring women of both the Christian and Muslim faiths to start a peace movement. In the context of situational leadership analysis, Gbowee’s ideas were religiously inspired that motivated the peace movement. The unity found at the heart of the Mass Action for Peace which included the women peace movement was a struggle to attain peace. Their shared experience as mothers, sisters, aunts and daughters united them on a common purpose. Bernard Bass and Ronald Riggio posit that transformational leadership is anchored on the involvement of both men and women-the gender dimension of leadership. Gbowee’s leadership style of persistence, energising the women group towards their common goal paid dividend. A peace deal was signed, and a transitional government set up to oversee a democratic election. This election marked a new beginning of hope, democracy and stability in Liberia. The second Liberian civil war impacted negatively on the people: from loss of lives to rape and pillage. It is worthy to note that women were the key drivers of peace in the country through various forms of engagement. Liberia became better off as the country underwent a post-conflict development and peacebuilding process, including Security Sector Reform (SSR) as part of its transitional justice program. In addition, the election of Allen Johnson Sirleaf marked the country’s true transition to democracy; Liberia stands out as a beacon of democracy and stability in West Africa. It is safe to conclude that Liberia is heading towards democratic consolidation. Without the non-violent, yet effective response from the women peace movement, it is arguable that Liberia would have now been a failed state. Liberian has won!!!

"I have never seen anything this scandalous".For lawyers that are gonna get involved with the oil industry, you have to be prepared when there are "no rules." You look no further than Exxon whose own reports 50 years ago said climate change is caused by what we're doing, let's keep it a secret and let's get ready to drill when the ice melts on the North Pole!Further Inspirations:https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1787816/https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1294164/https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9071322/Support the show (http://rexparris.juryanalyst.com)

The second term of schooling has been begun with controversial teacher shortages at some schools in the Eastern Cape. This comes as parents and SGB members at Kuyasa High School in Dimbaza have threatened to embark on a rolling mass action if the government fails to employ more teachers. The Education Department has also been accused of failing to issue placement letters on time to at least one-thousand temporary teachers, as Lubabalo Dada reports

Diffusion-limited reactions are studied in detail on the classical coalescing process. We demonstrate how, with the aid of a recent renormalization group approach, fluctuations can be integrated systematically. We thereby obtain an exact relation between the microscopic physics (lattice structure and particle shape and size) and the macroscopic decay rate in the law of mass action. Moreover, we find a strong violation of the law of mass action. The corresponding term in the kinetic equations originates in longwavelength fluctuations and is a universal function of the macroscopic decay rate.

We define the Gibbs Free Energy, which is the right energy function to use when you can control temperature, pressure, and particle number. This means chemists like it, because chemical reactions in a lab often take place under these conditions. We use this to derive the Law of Mass Action, which shows that the relative concentration of reactants depends only on temperature, and apply this to dissociation of the Hydrogen molecule, water, and hydrochloric acid.We also return to last lecture's discussion of how superconductors repel magnetic fields. Demo: We use liquid nitrogen to cool the high temperature superconductor YBCO below its superconducting transition temperature, so that it is in the superconducting state, and able to levitate magnets. Class discussions: How not to use a refrigerator to cool your apartment; High temperature superconductors and a small part of what's known about them. Lecture Audio
